  • Can we tame the feral cat that has been gradually getting closer over the past few years? Plus, we try a new experiment to sow wildflowers, dismantle a bridge and our neighbour, Peter, brings his tractor over to mow the field.
Mother & Daughter, Gail & Alex, Renovating a 300-year-old country house in Scotland. This is a record of our life renovating an historic house and using our land as a homestead to enable us to live as sustainably as we can - almost off grid!

I think I actually love this channel more than the mudlarking. I love seeing your home, garden and the critters. New little boy looks like Bryan or maybe just Mack for Makerel, which is the pattern of tabby he is. I am sure you will find a good and unique name for him.

I have a feral cat inside. Weeellll, he's not the most feral cat I've had. Before he came inside, he was letting me pet him while I fed him and the other cats. Elizabeth was about the most feral cat I had but I only briefly, from the time Mandy died and I got some other feral cat, I've pretty much had a feral cat inside since 1982.

What a sweet little cat. I wonder if his small size and odd gait were caused by malnutrition. His stance is referred to as a plantigrade stance and may have to do with his calcaneal tendon. George, a rescued lion living at Kevin Richardson's wild animal sanctuary has this issue, because of malnutrition a cub. Kevin has talked about it on his channel The Lion Whisperer TV, if you're interested. I love your wildflower plan!

I'm so curious if the descaling worked. We had a similar problem with well water and used an acid mix as well. It worked but we had to do it twice. After flushing the hot water tank, and emptying it, we poured in the solution. The first time, we didn't create enough of the solution to fill the heater and all the pipes so it didn't descale enough to make a big difference. The second time around, we made enough to fill 2 large outdoor garbage pails, poured it through, let it sit overnight and then emptied it in the morning. It worked but was a ton of work and messy. (our sink was half full of scale remnants by the time it was over) Good news?... That was 4 years ago and we haven't had any problems since.

When you speed things up I feel exhausted…. Mind you I feel exhausted after watching just one of your videos! When Gail was stacking the pen pieces on the trolley, I wanted to pop into the garage and get the bungee cords to tie the load down. Very useful bungee cords, just 2-3 make a big difference. I’m not sure I would call a feral Tomcat who was so brazen in his marking “cute”, but you are doing really well with him. He was listening.. contrary beast. Will probably listen harder as the weather gets colder!
You are definitely going for the Dark Academia look, I’m SO jealous of that curtain pole. I paid $150 for a white painted teak one then $45 more for wooden rings. You got a beautiful bargain. Perfect.❤❤❤

Had an abandoned mother cat and her full grown son and daughter show up at my house. Mom was tame but leary, son and daughter were feral, especially D. Won them over with regular feedings but not the D. One day I remembered and old hairbrush left from a long ago pet cat. Waited for all three to start eating then slowly reached out to brush down the D's back. She jumped away but came back to eat. Repeated the brush down the back - she jumped again but by the third brushing she was hooked! After that she settled down quite nicely over time.

Love the pictures of your garden flowers: what a lovely array you have nurtured there. I'm titillated by the secret project with the big wood beams from the footbridge. I remember the video when you obtained them: at the beginning of the video you narrated the completion of the road bridge and the dismantling of the temporary foot bridge and I was calling out to you on my computer monitor--"ask for that bridge! don't let it just be thrown away! How the pipe cleaning worked Gail, nothing like a bit of citric acid to clean up. Good luck with the cat Alex, with your determination and doggedness you will succeed!! Lovely video, thank you ladies. Your feral puss is beautiful, he will come round with time and patience, but I'm sure you're aware of that. Goodness knows what he has gone through in the past so he has to build his trust in you. I took in a feral girl, she was the same, but eventually I was able to get her spayed and treated for parasites. I had allocated a room for her so she could recuperate from her op and get used to the sounds in the house etc., and be away from my other cats. From that day she never went out again, she didn't 'ask' to go out and didn't try to escape. She was such a gentle and loving little cat.

I am blessed with a large house lot, an acre, and tolerant neighbors. Every spring I mow a 'pattern' in my yard which allows rows of wild growth to flower and flourish. I get beautiful strips of wild flowers and the wild creatures have cover to live. Usually in February, I take on the task of mowing it all down - I wait for then because I love the way it looks with snow. We don't get snow every year, but when we do it is beautiful. When I first moved here I tried to let it 'stay wild', but it is just too difficult to manage and in our climate - Texas - it becomes a bit of a fire hazard. Because wild creatures include snakes - which I don't love - I encourage the feral cats and the neighbor's pecking birds.

Normally at the point of cutting a meadow, if the seeds have dropped, your plan is what happens. Often folks do rake off the cuttings first to reduce the nutrients as some wildflower seeds do better in low nutrient conditions. Where as others which are quiet robust, can take advantage of the nutrients left (if cuttings aren't removed).
Best of luck with your plans for a wild flower meadow.
Just in case you don't get the coverage you want, if you scrap of some of the existing grasses next time during the cut, and then spread the seeds in that patch as well as the other areas, you'll be able to see if you're seed mix does better in the areas which have been scarified or cut and raked or cut and left.

My kittie is feral . I saw her looking at the barn from a large rock . She was stalking a mouse so I knew she was hungry . I left food near were she was and next day the food was gone . Little by little leaving the food closer to the house . Finally she was coming to the back door then inside the porch . She is small and is black and white and looks like Your black and white . She was once caught spade and given shots . You can tell this because two tiny clip marks were put in one ear . She stays out and once came in but was terrified and ran out. I pet her brush her but remains outdoors.

The flowers are just beautiful I wish I had some like the yellow one. I don't know what they are but I love them. The video is wonderful too. Best of luck with the wild flowers next year. Look forward to seeing them.

I don't think "cute" is the word I'd use, if one of my cats peed on my bed. We call "cherries" pompoms 😊

I really hope you are able to get the stray cat to trust you.
He shouldn't be outside when the winter starts and it's cold outside. 😢
But it took me almost a year to retain trust from a stray/feral cat.
I started with getting him fed at the same time as my other cats with the kitchen door open so he could see my cats while they were eating. After a few months, he came inside to eat together with them, the door still open, so he could run away when he got scared.
I was able to get his trust in the long time, and he became very affectionate.
The poor thing just had met the wrong people in his early life. But he lived here, indoors, many happy years.
Hopefully, this cute cat will also learn to trust people again. ❤

What a great buy!! I can’t wait to see your draperies hanging from that beautiful mahogany rod and rings. What kind of metal are the brackets made of?

Another great birthday present. I remember the chest of coins. You are a lucky girl. My mom was like yours and got me antiques for my birthday. I miss her

There was a very wild feral cat in our area. He could be 25m away but run at the sight of a human...it took months but he comes to my back door three times a day for a pet and food. He will come if I call his name...kitty😂. He would move inside but the two inside cats do not want him in their space.

Hi ladies, see if you have any local cat rescues nearby that would lend you a trap for kitty. I’ve had success with this before. He’s beautiful 🤩

I build a huge dog kennel and put bedding inside so the stray cats that came around had some where safe and warm to sleep in. When my Rambo had been hurt he would not come into the house so Dad and I cut new lock holes for the roller door to the workshop so that it stays open just high enough for the cats, but not next doors dog, so now the cats come and go as they please, best part was they managed to rid the workshop of the rat that had tried to make the workshop its home. We also have a Blue-tongued skink(lizard) living in the workshop lol it use to live under the wood pile but a few winter back it got flooded out and so she moved into the workshop as well.
For the wild native field spreading the seeds before cutting the grass and the old growth is the best way to do it, it will bed in the seeds that the birds are not able to hunt them out, best part was it rained right afterwards which had the benefit of knitting the cut steams into a natural felted blanket in preparation for winter. Next spring is going to be amazing.

There's a misconception on what a true feral cat is. You have about 8 weeks to domesticate a cat after that there isn't anything you can do. Most feral cats do not come out during the day and do not allow humans to get anywhere near them. They will run before you can get close. If you manage to corner them they will do great bodily harm to you and themselves to get a way. You would never get close and they cannot be tamed. A wild cat is different they are cats that were handled at a young age and for the most part domesticated but for some reason they were dumped or separated from their owners and have lived on their own long enough to be mistrustful of humans. They are skittish but can with time and patience be re domesticated and trusting. So your visitor would be considered wild or a stray but not feral. 🥰

Have you considered an "Intern" who could stay in your home and help you with projects for a month or two? I think there would be some young folks who would love to do that.
