I don't even understand why people are remotely worried about Russia anymore. They are a paper tiger in most aspects of warfare. I think the Russians could adequately defend their homeland and put up one hell of a fight, but they can't project power like the U.S. They can't sustain the operational tempo that we can. They don't even have the funding to develop, test, and build the same things we do,, at least not on the scale we do it.
China is the new dog in the race. We should team up with Russia in case we have to spank their asses.

@Procyon Lotor logistically the us dominates all other countries. No other country at this time can launch a long distance campaign and keep up with logistics like the us. That's why Russia has invested in the development of super long range weaponry. But you are very correct to never underestimate any advisory. For example, is all we have to do is look back to the Vietnam conflict and the ideological wars on Iraq and Afghanistan.

It’s kinda strange wanting an artillery shell to go 1000 miles which the only way I see to get it to go that far is if it has some sort of rocket propellant flying it to its target. And at that point you might as well just use some sort of missile or even CAS.

Excalibur has actually been around for a while now (been used in Iraq). The artillery piece itself is the new element. Also, just for some more information, there are a few ways of extending the range of an artillery piece without altering the cannon itself. One way is called base-bleed. Base bleed is where a gas generating component is on the back of the projectile (but it is not a rocket, it generates no significant thrust), which mitigates the vacuum that is generated by the projectile by it traveling through the air at high speed, allowing the projectile to reach and maintain a higher speed for a longer duration (the vacuum acts like a form of drag). Another way is obviously putting a rocket on the projectile (called a Rocket Assisted Projectile). One other way is to use a more powerful propellant in the tube (as long as the artillery tube can withstand the higher pressure).

I believe the copperhead was the first laser guided/ GPS guided artillery round. They had an issue with hitting the designator instead of the target. Their fins were spring-loaded and didn't always work making them even more useless. Now we just shoot them for shits and giggles and most likely to free up room in the ammo storage. Semper fi

The first artillery test was on May 25, 1953 at the Nevada Test Site. Fired as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole and codenamed Shot GRABLE, a 280 mm (11 inch) shell with a gun-type fission warhead was fired 10,000 m (6.2 miles) and detonated 160 m (525 ft) above the ground with an estimated yield of 15 kilotons.[1] This was the only nuclear artillery shell ever actually fired in the U.S. nuclear weapons test program. The shell was 1384 mm (4.5 ft) long and weighed 365 kg (805 lb). It was fired from a special, very large artillery piece, nicknamed "Atomic Annie",
Actually today the US Military doesn't have any nuclear weapons, none, zip, nada. Really, the US Military has **no** nuclear weapons.

They didn't. IF this was released 20 years ago, you might have a point. Do note, they are still firing these rounds out at VERY low velocity when talking artillery. Reason? At that range, hitting what you want to hit(anything over 15 miles) is more important than range. If range were the end all be all, we could send those rounds down range at 2.5X their current velocity using current gun barrel technology. BTW: So can anyone else. There is no magic in a gun barrels exit velocity. That ship sailed 80 years ago + slightly better metallurgy for better reliability. All the tech is in the guidance of the shell.
