Damn "states rights", there needs to be an absolute federal ban on child marriage with zero exceptions for religion or anything else, and it needs a damn life in prison sentence for those who arrange and are involved in making a young person go through with one.
Many nations around the world have passed strict laws against these child marriages I’m originally from Kenya and the law passed years ago will get you 20yrs in prison they equate child marriages to child sex slavery. In the US only 6 states have passed no exception child marriage laws. Virginia passed a ban on the exception of minors who are emancipated provided they are both minors. Even if you live in these six states that have zero tolerance like New York one can marry in another state that allows it like Missouri and there is nothing that NY can do about it coz all states have to respect each other’s laws. I find it ironic that the US goes around the world preaching about women’s rights yet they have one of the poorest women outcomes among developed countries with over 250,000 child marriages and that’s only in the past 30 yrs and 87% of child marriages involved girls marrying men who are at least on average 10+yrs older. This is due to not only to state rights but also the two party system that monopolizes the political system only addressing women’s issues when it’s convenient for them because politics matter more than the general welfare of a child. The federal government will only address child marriages if people add immense pressure upon it to act in the best interest of children and their communities.

I posted this in a different comment but it’s important to reiterate Not all states have marital rape Pedophilia and Statutory rape isn’t covered if your married Most states don’t have a set age for marriage, even though a lot have a minimum set for age of consent (and since parents gave consent for her it doesn’t matter) This means mom and dad gave the go ahead, the marriage is legal, and the wedding night isn’t considered rape Her husband is now her legal custodian, so CPS aren’t going to be able to really do anything She can’t ran away to a women’s shelter until she’s 18 (they legally cannot accept her before then) She can’t file for divorce or annualment because she’s still a minor and needs permission from her legal custodian She cannot open a bank account or a credit card until she’s 18 without an adult She cannot hold a job until she’s 14 or 15 She can’t file for legal emancipation because she doesn’t meet the requirements to qualify The only thing she can do is hide, bide her time, and get birth control no questions asked from planned parenthood, and hope she doesn’t get pregnant until she’s old enough to make a run for it
The only states that have no minimum age for marriage are California, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Most states for have a minimum.
Most states have a minimum age of marriage at 16, to have 14, two have 15, and two have no it undefined. This is illegal everywhere in the country but two states.
I must say the make up crew made a wonderful job. After she was admitted and her wedding make up was removed she looks just like a scared kid But with her wedding make up on she is extremely creepy. Because that is not how you would make up a child - they tried to make her look like a miniature adult. extremely jarring
I was also thinking this! With the makeup she looks… unsettling. Like she has the height and dressed as a flower girl but she looks as if you had photoshopped a woman’s face into a child’s head
The entire situation is disturbing and horrifically happens each day. It’s terrifying to see, in this situation, how many “wedding” guests were. That that many people were ok with it

@@gregjenkinson7512 The fact that underage marriage is legal in most of the states in America says alot. In fact the conservative Republicans actually voted against making it illegal. There have been 5 reports of 10 years old marriages, 78 cases of 13 years old and more than 1200 of 14 years old marriages. Love this show. Young girl is a fabulous actress. Her expressions, her body movements or lack thereof, was impressive. As far as age, it should be illegal worldwide.

Yeah but the brain's also more developed at 25, should we move it to there? 18 is already fairly developed, the fact Americans make 21 the legal drinking age but 18 to join the army is absurd
I just thought of something. The description said the explosion happened during the vows. If the vows weren’t complete or the minister didn’t “pronounce” them husband and wife, would that mean they aren’t technically married?

Usually doctors make vague promises that don't give a patient false hope. So interested of, 'i promise we will make u better' its usually, 'i promise we will try our best/do what we can'. And politicians say that they are all for "protecting the children" but wont make child marriages illegal, create better gun laws, and help the children in foster care.
Majority of foster "parents" are grotesquely abusive and are just in it for the money. Plus kids get shipped from home to home to home, only allowed to take one bag with them, and once they turn 18 are kicked out since the checks stop. There ARE amazingly loving, selfless foster parents also, believe me, mine were and then adopted me. But the sad facts are that the majority are vicious and do some severe harm to the innocent kids. The problem with this episode is that New Amsterdam is in New York and child marriage is illegal in New York. In 2021, the legal age was raised to 18 w/no exceptions, before that in 2017 it was 17 with parental consent, but even before that it was 16 with parental consent and 14 with a court order. Lily's marriage would have been illegal no matter when they wrote the episode.
It depends where the marriage certificate is signed. The ceremony itself doesn't change anything. Either way, this can and does happen in the US and that is horrific.
Saudi Arabia has a minimum legal age of 17 to marry, the US has however a very much lower number... since the states choose. Honestly though, the US decentralization is worrying Poor girl
When I watched this I thought that the poor girl had been r*ped by the groom and she was so traumatized and confused by everything that she thought that she was the bride, because I would have never thought that marrying off a 12 year old girl was legal in a "civilized" country. Of course, both situations are pretty horrible, I hope you get my meaning.
The fact that she told all that in the end sends me chills. I have a few relatives who were forced into child marriages and they're all divorced. One was 13 years old and was given to a grown man in marriage for $2000. The groom's father wanted to my more acreage for his farm. The bride and groom met during the ceremony and they did not like each other at all.
I keep hearing conservatives talking about how wonderful and fulfilling it is to be a very young mother. I grew up knowing many girls who were raised this way and have done much the same-- at least 20 between 1979-1990. 40 years later, none of those marriages succeeded. Only 1 girl got through college, and that was beauty school, easily a third of them lost custody, over half had been or were were being treated for cervical cancer by age 30, a few died of drug &/or alcohol ODs, 2 were murdered, several ended up infertile well before the age of 25 due to untreated PID including a just-divorced 19 year old with 4 kids under age 5 all with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome who required a hysterectomy, an ileostomy, and spent a week in a medically induced coma in the ICU, bcz by the time her medicaid-approved OB/GYN appointment finally arrived her entire uterus had gone septic and rotted into her intestines. Her husband was 26, and illiterate. He sold drugs and collected scrap and liked to bring home all his buddies from the bar to have sex with her; that was how he "earned" his drinking money. After a few days her liver failed due to all the NSAIDs/alcohol she'd consumed to deal with all the pain she was in while she waited that 6 months for that appointment. 10 days after that delayed appointment she was dead and her kids placed with their 36 year old waitress grandmother and 45 year old chronically unemployed grandfather. Her daughter later gave birth at 13. She had the mental age of an 8 year old. She had 2 more in 2 years before she died of congestive heart failure. Rural US Heath Care at its 20th century best. The boys didn't turn out any better. Most were trapped in low-wage, dead-end jobs, or were worked like mules for their fathers in law until their bodies gave out. These days, the ones that didn't drink themselves to death, or wrap themselves around a tree at highway speeds, are in jail, or trapped in low-wage industries and still being hounded by the families of the girls they were never permitted to be able to acquire the means to provide for. Nobody wins when children birth children. I also had a school-friend who was [her word "seduced" my word "raped" ] by a local DJ, who was over the age of 26. She became pregnant, and gave birth in 10th grade the weekend after she turned 14 after being taken to the hospital for her appendix. She hadn't known she was pregnant, and I honestly believe her. Her mother was so religious that she hadn't allowed her to receive any formal sex education whatsoever, including what the parts of her own body were called, and their purposes. The only thing her mom taught her was "God makes women bleed for their sins", so when her periods stopped, she thought she was "right with God." She didn't even know that a penis could impregnate her until her son's 4 month checkup, because her own mother had told her that her infant son's erections meant she was a "seductive" mother and had made her stop cuddling him. City, county, state and federal money for social services and social service workers were needed to care for all of those child-headed families, their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren , whether they were "religious" or not, whether the parents "helped" or not; all those young families and their children struggled through needless hardships and suffered needless emotional trauma that permanently stunted their potential, and trapped them in generational patterns of poverty and exploitation they might otherwise have escaped. It sickens me that 30 years later, this is still the type of existence that conservative leadership believes is "best" for our children. Stunting them so they stay close and dependent.
Yeah... It's the religious people and the "conservative" voters that totally believe in raping young girls. Just tell us you are a warped person Edward.
@@JaefarSABNWThe bible acknowledges addiction and overindulgence are common in mankind. It also states that there is a way back to sobriety 1 Corinthians 10:13. The thing about context is that its everything. Galatians provides guidance on what an ideal Christian should aim for, forbearance, humility and kindness among them. Galatians talks about a life of drunkeness, which I think is entirely different from suffering from an illness, which is what alcoholism is. I'm not saying that it's not possible to be an alcoholic and be a bad person, some of the people OP's post prove that, but to say the two are inherently the same is too far. The bible is often used to justify all kinds of behaviour and arguments. That doesn't make them right. God gave man hearts and minds that we may feel and discern right from wrong. Poor girl. Sad that there is such a thing as “child brides.” Also makes me wonder about “child husbands.” Doubt there are many and it seems apparent that low minimum ages are just a way to prey on little girls. EDIT: per a 2019 UNICEF estimate, 115 million men and boys around the world we’re married as children, compared to 650 million women and girls.
Girls are more common because of the obsession with purity / virginity. I am not curious about the reason for boys .... hmm.... time for some research.
The MCI reminds me of when I worked at a hospital and once a year we would have the local area high school drama departments bus their kids in in full make up and little plackets of their character's injuries and the whole Response Team would be called in and have to go through the whole triage and admissions process without notice like a fire drill. I was absurdly proud of the fact that I was given one of the response phones to be on the response team even though I was just patient transport. The whole system broke down if transport wasn't on the ball.
Child marriage is legal in most states in the US. From time to time the states try to make it illegal but the Republicans think child marriage is OK, and fight to keep it legal. A month ago West Virginian Republicans blocked a ban on child marriage, and at the same time in Missouri a Republican senator's argument for the validity of child marriage was that child brides, in his opinion, stay married.
As a republican I can say child marriage is tragic and should be illegal everywhere. Children are not adults, they need to be protected and there are absolutely no circumstances in which an adult should be allowed to pursue a romantic/sexual relationship with a child, especially not one that legally binds that child to them possibly for life. I have never met a republican who feels any different
Didn’t Mitch McConnell say that younger brides are easier to control? I believe this was meant to be an argument for child marriage. Absolutely disgusting.

Between 2000 and 2018 there were 300,000 child marriages in the USA. It absolutely does happen.
Mom said she needs to protect her child
And called her son a maniac for objecting her 12 y/o daughters wedding
Bless her brother for trying to stop it. While he went about it the wrong way, he made a decision to step in when no one else would!
Correction; she's no "mom", at best she's a fairy tale step-mother, and "her son" is most accurately referred to as "the child-trafficking victim's brother; the hero."
I haven't been watching this show for long, but Iggy is already my favorite character. His technique with Lily is perfect. This world definitely needs more doctors like him.
All of his other acting roles have been silly, goofy, comedic roles. So to see him in something serious… it’s different.
I posted this in a different comment but it’s important to reiterate
Not all states have marital rape
Pedophilia and Statutory rape isn’t covered if your married
Most states don’t have a set age for marriage, even though a lot have a minimum set for age of consent (and since parents gave consent for her it doesn’t matter)
This means mom and dad gave the go ahead, the marriage is legal, and the wedding night isn’t considered rape
Her husband is now her legal custodian, so CPS aren’t going to be able to really do anything
She can’t ran away to a women’s shelter until she’s 18 (they legally cannot accept her before then)
She can’t file for divorce or annualment because she’s still a minor and needs permission from her legal custodian
She cannot open a bank account or a credit card until she’s 18 without an adult
She cannot hold a job until she’s 14 or 15
She can’t file for legal emancipation because she doesn’t meet the requirements to qualify
The only thing she can do is hide, bide her time, and get birth control no questions asked from planned parenthood, and hope she doesn’t get pregnant until she’s old enough to make a run for it
The only states that have no minimum age for marriage are California, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Most states for have a minimum.
@@patrickd5274 That's still way too many.

I must say the make up crew made a wonderful job.
After she was admitted and her wedding make up was removed she looks just like a scared kid
But with her wedding make up on she is extremely creepy.
Because that is not how you would make up a child - they tried to make her look like a miniature adult. extremely jarring
I was also thinking this! With the makeup she looks… unsettling. Like she has the height and dressed as a flower girl but she looks as if you had photoshopped a woman’s face into a child’s head
The child actors on this show are always so good! I really felt the fear.
That girl in an incredible actor, so few words but conveyed the trauma so well.
The entire situation is disturbing and horrifically happens each day. It’s terrifying to see, in this situation, how many “wedding” guests were. That that many people were ok with it
Well it's going to be your new normal which is why they are softening you up on television for it.
In what actual way is this going to be the new normal? Show me the statistics that show underage marriage in America is on the rise and being fully accepted
@@augustcanyon3438How? The doctors want to remove her from her family for this reason but legally can’t. In fact, more people are against this
@@gregjenkinson7512 The fact that underage marriage is legal in most of the states in America says alot. In fact the conservative Republicans actually voted against making it illegal.
Ohio actually randomly deleted underage marriage data of children less than 15 years old and Tennessee don't count underage marriages if there is less than 10 underage marriage that year.
There have been 5 reports of 10 years old marriages, 78 cases of 13 years old and more than 1200 of 14 years old marriages.

For a minute I was like "Oh man, she must be in so much psychological shock that she thinks she was the bride" before realizing actually, just another normal day in the land of the free.
This episode really shows how important psychologists and social workers are inside the public helath system.
For sure, they usually get dismissed because when you think of psychologists in healthcare you think immediately of the "so tell me how you feel" therapists that really don't do much, I think this show in general highlights how useful psychologists are

I love that this show has so many kinds of doctors, a little person doctor, a deaf doctor, someone with a hijab, etc.
When I watched the show with my dad we made fun of the dwarf doctor, it was funny but yeah the guy's solid. The deaf doctor was a bit annoying with her high pitched noises but was otherwise brilliant, hijab doctor idk didn't get much screen time in comparison
He played that scene so well, you can see him connecting the dots but at the same time fighting to find a more common possibility then the horror he just heard. Marriage really shouldn’t start before 18 , heck I’d say we need to move smoking , and marriage and being an adult in general to 21 since the brain is more developed then.

What matters legally would be whether or not they signed the marriage license, which is typically done after the vows.

why the hell is child marriage still legal
A better question, why are some people trying to pass laws to make it more legal?
Pedophile males and the legislators who support them.
The scarier thing is…it’s reality..
Same reason they want to ban abortion. Christianity
Republicans block every attempt
Oh man! This is messed up in so many ways! 😣 If I found out my daughter was getting married to an older man I would do everything in my power to stop the wedding (FYI I don’t have a kid, but that’s what I would do if I had one).
My oldest is 15. She's smart, driven, charismatic. She loves school.
And her marrying before she's an adult would be over my dead body.
If your said daughter was getting married at a young age, it was only because you have given consent.
My dear friend was FLDS from the St. George, Utah area. She was married against her will at 15 to an adult. He committed suicide when she was 16. Thank goodness she wasn't pregnant yet.
Some see it as a "factory" with conveyor belts bringing the kids in. I mean bringing the paycheck in and that's all that matters.

One night when I was panicking, my paramedic put his hand on my knee and left it there the whole ride to the hospital. I felt so comforted.

I grew up knowing many girls who were raised this way and have done much the same--
at least 20 between 1979-1990. 40 years later, none of those marriages succeeded.
SO, the biblical idea works according to you?
Alcoholism is only for those destined for Hell in Galatians 5.

Galatians talks about a life of drunkeness, which I think is entirely different from suffering from an illness, which is what alcoholism is. A month ago West Virginian Republicans blocked a ban on child marriage, and at the same time in Missouri a Republican senator's argument for the validity of child marriage was that child brides, in his opinion, stay married.
Well yeah they do, because they're married to their jailers.
As a republican I can say child marriage is tragic and should be illegal everywhere. Coz he was protecting his sister. At least one person was sane in that wedding.
I didn’t realize this was actually something that could be chosen legally! It should not have to be placed in law but most definitely should. Where’s CPS when needed? I’d hate to be a Dr in this case. I love New Amsterdam!!!
CPS aren't able to do anything because it's legally allowed to get married at that young age. I was arranged to be married at 10 and it was all completely legal. I ended up getting away and my neighbor who was 11 married him instead
