    Really glad you touched on synthetic turquoise and opalite. I'm a turquoise junkie and have been having a hard time finding true turquoise ANYTHING, let alone plugs. And I am so tired of seeing people talking about how they love opalite stone, hopefully a professional tellin' people it's glass will make them listen!
    Also- "Vibe on THAT, hippie!" made me laugh so hard, holy moly.

    something funny happens to stone and glass there are really simple and curious ways to know if a stone is really what it claims to be , hold the stone in your hand if the piece stays cold and doesn't heat up with your bod y heat then is a real stone if it heats up and doesn't stay cold its glass or god knows what also another way is to take a lighter and burn the stone if it leaves a mark its a plastic or glass or god knows what if it stays pure without any mark then its a real stone , i learned this from my mother who loves stones and know a lot of things about stones :)

      opalized glass or opalite is a man made gem that has the same chemical properties as opal so its kind of like a mixture between both glass and stone but its all synthetic

    there was a part cut from this vid where I talk about "aventurine glass". Aventurine is a natural stone from Brazil, "goldstone" was the name they gave the glass product once natural aventurine was introduced in Europe- it's the only time in English that the synthetic gave the name to the natural. As far as malachite- honestly, I can't remember what it is exactly, I just knew back in the '90s people were having trouble with malachite beads, especially in anything that gets wet.

  • @pangeapiercing
    @pangeapiercing  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    there are hardness tests and acid tests and other stuff- I've watched some videos on identifying stones but I don't dare preach about that unless I brushed up on the topic. If you called them they could tell you if it was natural or synthetic- but I wouldn't sweat it either way. The synthetic opals also have some kind of polymer binder.

    Idk if I ever posted this story on here but I must share it. I was in Salem, MA for a concert and, of course, we had to go and adventure in the Witch Shops. So I go in and see that they're selling stones. All the basic stuff.. But then I look over and see gold stone. I ask about it and they try BSing me with the hole "It's story is it's made from the dust given off by fallen stars" "But is it a real stone?" "Yeah! We only sell real stones!" Needless to say I laughed, explained it to them, then walked out feel sorry for anyone who is drawn in by their foolishness.

      I wouldn't have said anything if it was just cheap stuff but they were trying to sell it for $7.50 A STONE. Mind you, these 'stones' were no bigger than a 1 1/2in plug. I'm hoping people overheard and walked out, as well! That place was ridiculous. A piece of obsidian was almost $50!! Not even looking at it monetarily, that's just bad business practice.. (I try not to miss a chance to take the piss out of anyone who would cheat people like that>:D)

    I'm all for healing in stones even if it's more of a plecebo ie faith. My daughter needed heart surgery and before her op we put charged rose quartz under her mattress in her basket and also after when she was in recovery, I like to think they soothed her. If not it was good for me to keep sanity during it all. :)

    I love your videos so much and I'm no piercing expert but at the end of the video you said that you aren't telling us to go weigh down our ears but it does work, I would have touched on the fact that weight makes an uneven stretch and stretches out the bottom of your lobe rather than your top (in terms of ear stretching) but its no buggy haha its pretty easy to figure it out without someone stating it. Love your videos! Thank you so much for your time and everything!

  • @pangeapiercing

    YES- everything in this video (except Kenny's labradorite teardrops....and I can get a pair of those too) is for sale in my shop. I usually have at least 100 pairs of natural jewelry in every size, plus a bunch of glass and titanium. You let me know what you would need and I can make it happen :)

    A lot of synthetic turquoise is either plastic, glass, or Howlite dyed blue and black, and that’s why it looks so off. Howlite has a different luster-ie. none, when compared to the real thing- and it’s a different hardness. The reason turquoise is so precious is that it’s rare and beautiful and all, but also that it’s very soft. That’s part of the reason why turquoise is almost always cut as a cabochon- it lacks the clarity of other stones, so it doesn’t exactly require the facets to really reflect the light, and it’s so soft that its cleavage just isn’t suited for those kinds of multi-faceted cuts. Howlite handles those even worse, but it’s much easier to carve because it’s significantly softer and cheaper to make. but ultimately it looks sort of crappy when being passed off as ‘turquoise’. Howlite is a beautiful stone on its own, and I think it would be a lot more effective to just advertise it like it is.

    Actually... Geology is not the study of stone. It's the study of earth's physical structure, substance, history and processes. Petrology is the study of stone. BUT to remain relevant any viewers wanting to find stone plugs will want to look for a Lapidary Artist. BTW, great stone review! For someone not being a rock hound you know your rocks!!

  • @jeanined9060
    @jeanined9060 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thanx for this. You are entertaining! And even tho you're not a "geologist", you do seem well-informed on stones. Good for you! I'm not a geologist either, but am a biologist with some geology knowledge under my belt. Nowadays, I'm a jewelry maker & lampworker. Just FYI, did you know that the "gold" in goldstone is actually copper? So the "hippies" (that comment made me LOL & I love hippies!) could actually be feeling the vibes from the copper. Also, a lot of the fake turquoise now is made from dyed magnasite. Magnasite is a naturally white or off-white veined stone that's pretty all on its own & takes a dye really well so it's easily found in all different colors. It's very common & inexpensive, so if you see something labelled turquoise that's pretty cheap & looks pretty real, it's undoubtedly dyed magnasite. Just thought you'd find those facts interesting. Keep the vids coming! They're great!

  • @pangeapiercing
    @pangeapiercing  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    the funny thing is most "howlite" is an aggregate (google synthetic howlite rough). LOTS of stone is dyed....most black onyx is dyed black. Synthetic turquoise is just the blue-green version- you'll see pink and yellow and black with white veins and all kinds of variations. Some are pretty interesting- the synthetic opal and lab grown quartzes at least.

    Intrepid made a line of solid synthetic opal plugs a few years ago- they were super hot, but very expensive, and not available in sizes over (I think) 10mm. Natural opal would be god awful expensive, and extremely fragile. I mean like NICE new car expensive for matching solid opal plugs. Come out and see us when you're in the D- it sucks in December, but we will be here!

  • @dolo_animate
    @dolo_animate 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Goldstone is also a interesting story to it because it was not made in purpose it is a glass that unintentionally got copper flakes added to it that gives it the starry appearance so it was originally created with alchemy between glass and the precious metal Copper :)

My mental image of myself isn't scruffy- I wish I could be fancy all the time, but it takes a lot of work. I'm trying to come up with some aftercare- what to look for in a studio- sterilization basics videos, but it's actually pretty hard to do something comprehensive, yet interesting, without leaving out hugely important things. I am torn, because without pros making the info public, people aren't getting it, but if I do one and miss something, then I've contributed to misinforming the public. It's a huge responsibility and one I do not want to fuck up!

    I just giggled at the part when you talked about the people feeling vibrations coming off of the gold stone. As someone who is actually really into crystal healing and stones in general.. I can tell you right now, if you actually have the ability to "feel" the energy of a stone, you're not going to feel anything when picking up a piece of glass.
    P.S. You clean up quite nicely.

    Lovely collection of jewelry. Good level of information. I was raised up a "rock hound" so being able to get a variety of stone jewelry is a joy.
    I had a jewelry salesperson try to correct me so hard when I asked to "look at the opalite glass pair."
    That, no it isn't glass it's stone. Haha ok.
    I don't even know if you could make plugs/ hoops out of opal because of it's delicate nature, let alone afford it.
    That being said, I don't mind the fake stones/ glass as long as they are safe. I have a few opalite pieces. I'd like some blue goldstone.
    I would also like some turquoise jewelry but so much of it is other stones dyed and I worry about the safety of such pieces. Like, if the vendor is willing to lie about the composition or is ignorant of it, do I really want to wear this stuff?
    I suppose a plug with a turquoise inlay could be one way to go.

    • @daegwaith4444

      Same here, I don't mind the stones being synthetic as long as they're safe and pretty. I've stayed away from turquoise because it could either be dyed Howlite or some plastic material and I don't want the latter in my body

    Whoa, I don't know if it's just cause I never paid much attention, but I didn't realize the synth opals were actually stone. I just assumed some type of glass or something. That makes some of the colors I've seen come out of Anatometal seem insane lol. Back to the subject of howlite though, is there a way to tell the aggregates from the genuine stone? Because I have a pair of plain old white howlite from Diablo that you've got me curious about now.

    hard to tell whats real or not but this video helps a lot. not only to describe the different types of stone but the way to tell if the product is worth buying or not. keep it up!

    Damn JC! I'd like to applaud you. I really enjoy and appreciate these videos. You present the information in such an intresting and entertaning way, that keeps people engaged all the way through. I must admit, I think I've watched all of your "Body Jewlery Basics" videos at least 3 or 4 times each.
    I've learned a ton, so I would really like to thank you for making me less of an ignorant fuck.
    I only have my ears pierced, but plan on getting more piercings. I will DEFINITELY be doing more research, and use the information you've given me to choose the right jewelry, piercer, etc.
    Also, your personality and cool style, really adds to the show.
    Keep up the awesome work!

    Another awesome video this week. That labradorite was so beautiful. I'm investing in some with a lot of blue flash one of these days. Anyways maybe another video idea. I remember quite some time ago you had a video where Kenny talked about some of the jewelry he makes. I absolutely loved the septum pieces (his in particular made to fit his septril) so perhaps make a video of him producing some jewelry ? Not that I don't love seeing you but I'd still love to see some machining. Oh and uh gimme

    When i watch these videos, i come away entertained and more informed! And for some reason his voice, demeanor and his "antics" are very satisfying (in a non-sexual way) to watch!!!

    Goldstone is made from mostly aventurine glass and copper oxide. What makes that copper content safe if malachite is unsafe?

    What are synthetic stone plugs actually made of? I don't mind not having really nice stone plugs if the synthetic ones are cheaper, but if they're made of acrylic or some shit I'm not going anywhere near them.

    Do you know much about Mystic Metals? I bought some larger Howlite stone plugs and want to know if they're garbage before I stretch to accommodate them. Looking on Howlite plugs on Bodyartforms, I have a feeling the ones in my possession are trash.

    Good video J.C. as always, kind of curious what you think of kings body jewelry. i think i've had a pair of plugs from there before. just curious. thanks for keeping us up to date on all the knowledge you have.

    LOL!!! So epic, awesome episode J.C.
    Any thoughts on doing a Winter Wearable Video? Like what plugs do well during our upcoming cold months?

    Love the suit!
    I have a question about the difference between round and teardrop plugs. Is there any practical difference in wearing them and how your ears have to be stretched to accomodate them, or is it purely an aesthetic choice?

    J.C. I have a concern about my ear lobes. I've been stretching my lobes for what will be six years this October. They have plenty of blood flow and I can sense they are attached to my body by pain or touch. Many people I have known in the past either blew out a lobe or lobes by rushing the process of stretching. I'm concerned that while now at 7/16 of an inch further stretching will cause the lobe to either look too small for average jewelry or stretch to the point of having difficulty bearing a 1/2 inch or 9/16 plug. Is just having small lobes a valid concern. I've bought cheap jewelry and I've never needed special or modified pieces to accommodate me up until now. Beyond what I'm currently at I would like to be certain the skin will change accordingly if properly taken care of like in the past. P.S. Geology is fun with application like this but geologists are the podiatrists of the science world. Great suit! Who is your Tailor? Don't change the videos. If you add some random juggs, a Slurpee on the counter, or did the presentation from a masseuse table everyone in watching TH-cam from the convenience of their bathroom might get distracted.

    alot of it depends on size. i can get a cheap pair of labs in my size 5/8 16mm for around 25 dollars but a nice pair from a reputable maker will cost around 70 dollars or more depending on the quality of the stone.

    wish i knew if what was in my ear at the moment was real stone. im hoping it is. ive been wearing the same pair for about a year now. but anyhow. will you have anything up on an online store anytime soon? id love to pick up some stone or organic plugs. once again great informational video.

    I was wondering about some of my old gauges. I always have to stick to natural items. Glass (which has made up 70% of my "stone"lol), and stone have always been great for me. Surgical steel too. I had some wood hangers a long time ago that irritated my ears - do manufacturers polish them with lacquer? I've worn wood since, but I'm always cautious about finishes.

    How do you clean stone plugs? Can u autoclave them? Can u wear them in a body of water? Or are they like other organic plugs where u can’t submerge them in water and can’t really clean them fully?
