His focus on controlling food is deeply disturbing. One of his sons was diagnosed with malnutrition at a young age: Josh would not let his boys be fed more than one meal a day as they would “ just poop out his food.” But he had plenty of money for power tools.

The more I listen to the early experiences of josh I see a clearly picture of fear of never being loved. He was so desperate to be accepted to find a woman to love him in all his quirkiness. Susan did. But I think as he was faced with real responsibility in supporting a family he just freaked 😳 😜 🤔 😱 all that pressure and I think he was jealous that everyone loved his wife including his own father with a sick obsession to have her. He was failing in his ability to hold down a job and im sure his dad bittled him about that 🤔 he wasn't standing up to being a man meanwhile his wife handles working 2 jobs and being a mom too. This had to crush his fragile ego and he asserted his power over her by spending her money on the stuff he thought of make him happy... none of it did through and of course steven kept meddling in their marriage. Steven's role in susan death cannot be ignored as he constantly was taling and photographing her and putting his own son down. This plus his f##### up abusive childhood took its toll on their marriage and all the violence in his parents own marriage. Thank God Jennifer the only one of the powell children who finally got away was able to have a fulfilling happy life made the right decision to leave. Josh unfortunately wasn't strong enough to stand up to his dad and be his own man. The parallels between Steven and Terry and Josh and susans marriage was the perfect example of how joshs psyche was affected by that destruction of his parents marriage. Had Josh been able to get the therapy he desperately needed this tragedy never would j as very happened. The entire powell family susan Josh and Charlie and Barden are dead, all at the hands of Josh. 😱😭💔

Thank you COLD for providing these videos. I grew up knowing Susan at church and at school. I am still in shock of all the things that happened to her and her boys even years later. I wanted to thank you for providing these episodes
First of all: So that we can see that Susan was an amazing women that was being mistreated over and over and yet she always had hope. What a strong person. It is very unfortunate that her strong will and beautiful personality was wasted on someone so selfish and unemotional. She could have had a great life if she could have been with someone that cared for her.
Second of all. For you to take the time at the end of the episode to acknowledge if someone is living like this that they should get help. That is huge. I hope other women or men in this type of relationship will see it and realize what is happening and get out as soon as they can.
    RIP Susan, Charlie and Braden.

I am so sorry for your loss ... Its unimaginable the things she went through and we hope this never becomes our reality but going to school or church with someone who has lived and died going through this probably hits way harder than the rest of us who never were blessed enoigh to ever know her in this life. I'm so glad to hear you mentioning the power imbalance between Susan and her father-in-law. It's SUCH important context IMO. Sometimes men don't really think of those things because they don't experience it as much; and if you don't think of it then you wouldn't understand why she's completely quiet, not stopping him, etc. It's because she's in shock, and terrified.

Steve: "I'm probably wrong, but I've really fallen in love with you. I mean, you know, for the last year and a half you're the only thing I can really think about. And I dont know where it began, it probably began with you living with me, and you'd come into my office and you know, let me feel your legs smoothly waxed, shaved or whatever; and then it just led from one thing to another I guess. And that experience on the couch, that act of love 6 months ago was just...I mean, I know...it was a massage right, just being with you for 2 hours, and holding you...
      Susan: *total silence*
Steve: "Maybe I'm getting the wrong signals from you, maybe I'm interpreting something that I shouldn't be interpreting um, you know, it just, for example, when we were sitting on the couch, it just felt like...you were, you know I was extremely aroused and I think you were somewhat aroused I'd think, or so I thought.
Susan: " I don't know where you're going with this..."
      Steve: *stammering*
Susan: "I mean, I'm married to your son...I should just be the daughter in law..."
      Steve: "I know."
Susan: "...Which puts me just a step beneath your own children..."
      Steve: "Mhm."
Susan: "And that's where I'm coming from."
      Steve: "Okay."
Susan: "I was kind of meaning to talk to you about this, because I realized that the last time I came over that, my own father, and not to be mean to him about it, because everyone treats their own differently, but, my own father doesn't kiss me. He, as of maybe 6 years ago, just started getting into the habit of saying I love you. And, my mom also. My family is not that vocal and physical with showing their emotions. Mainly you just tease someone to show that you care about them. Which I think is the first level that most people use; you know, your co workers, you know, you tease them because you like hanging out. And, I was just thinking about the last time that my own father doesn't kiss me, and then you kiss me...and I didn't like that.
      Steve: "Okay. That's fine."
Steve: "Susan..." *stammering* when your daughter in law walks into your office and shows you her legs and says...you know...*stammering*"
Susan: "Well I'm sorry that I did that, and I can't undo it. So I'm just trying to forget, I guess..."
      Steve: "Okay. Okay, that's fine."
Steve: "Are you upset at me for talking to you like that?"
Susan: "Uh...no...its nice to...answer your questions..."
Steve: "I appreciate that, I really do because I've been wanting to talk to you...are you going to tall to Josh about it?"
Susan: "Is there anything I don't talk to Josh about?"

I think he was like his father.... obsessed. What he describes here is not love its like possession. He wanted to make her his and only his to serve him exclusively. Later when she wanted her own attention to grow and become independent and to share responsibilities of the house and raising their children etc he got enraged because she didn't want to be his little possession anymore she wanted to be herself and have her own money etc. I think with the powell men they view women as slaves to be want they want them to be, not people with needs of their own. Susan, in the beginning accepted joshas controlling nature but toward the end of her life she learned to stick up for herself and stand up to him. She also really did think she deserved better for herself too. Unfortunately she let her fear keep her in thst relationship believing hed change. He continued to deceive her and in the end when he finally realized she was planning to leave him he killed her. So many signs even early on long before his bankruptcy in 2007. The day they got married josh ignored her. Really I don't think he ever really loved her, he may have thought he did of honestly I don't think josh knew how to love anyone. His father destroyed thst in him with his own abuse.

She isn't- There are a lot of people in the comments discussing his strange manner of speaking, and she is pointing out its a cultural thing. Which it is. I live in Salt Lake City and I agree.

@@melissamoonchild9216 It's not typical and it's not cultural....my husband is a Utah Mormon and and I know many, many more who don't have creepy voices like Josh Powell. Do you know why??? Because Josh Powell was a creepy creepy psychopath with a creepy creepy voice.

Knowing one person isnt the same as growing up in the culture. It is a thing. It's a vocal inflection..no one is saying Josh ISNT a creep or saying that he IS a creep because hes mormon. Calm down

What is with this anti-mormon shit? Josh and his family HATED the religion and did everything to bash it in front of believers. He tried brainwashing his son's into hating Jesus for God's sake. Don't pin this shit on religion.
