I had a bidet installed on my toilets during the COVID toilet paper shortage. Boy, did that ever come in handy after my surgery. I have a cheap one, around $30 and easy to install. It only uses cold water but the feeling of being clean is so wonderful. There are other models that are much fancier if you want to pay more.
I was a Combat Medic in the U.S. Army...eventually advanced into the operating room. I assisted in all kinds of surgeries including these. But I never knew what happened after the person left the operating room. I fell on a sheet of ice landing on my shoulder blade...Now I am going to have to go through this.
I’m 29 have had arthroplasty bone blocks with repair to rotator, labrum on both shoulders. And now I’m recovering from my first total reverse replacement and my other one is scheduled for the end of 2020. Love watching these videos because they are pretty spot on to everything I’ve been through the last 10 years. Hope everything is back to 100%!!!
"Left Handed Toilet Paper" lol! Well sir, you made me laugh! I am right handed and having rotator cuff surgery May 27th (complete tear with tendons retracted) and been practicing doing things left-handed these last few weeks...Bless your heart for making this video. Very helpful for those of us facing this...A lot of great information. Thank you very much.
First, thanx for sharing and best wishes to be healthy ASAP 🤞 I'm in my eighth day out from surgery for small tears in my bicep and rotator cuff. Showered and light circular exercises three days after, feels stable. Take the arm out a few hours a day for the rehab and showering, seems to really help. Not sure if it's wise to keep the arm in 24/7. IMO. Stitches look great. Not much pain luckily, more uncomfortable than anything, plus the mental aspect of being confined. Pain block made my right hand dead and swollen big-time seven hours after surgery. Went to hospital and assured me it would go away and luckily it did. Best wishes everyone 🙏
Thank you so much for this video. My surgery was January 10, 2022 and it is cold in Eugene , OR. I am a woman with long arms and couldn’t find warm Women’s blouses so I bought several over-sized, long sleeve, warm, men’s button-down shirts from St Vinnie’s which are super easy to get on and off. I appreciated, however, your demonstration of getting in and out of a pull-over top, like a turtleneck, especially for when going outside for a walk and wanting to keep my arm covered. I try to take as few drugs as possible, so instead of a stool softener, I bought unsulphured dried apricots, covered them with water, brought them to a boil and cooked for 10 minutes. Eat 4-6 of them a couple times and you have no bowel issues. I bought a wedge pillow system for my bed a month before surgery and practiced getting it in just the right position so that I can sleep in my bed. It has been great. I use my recliner for naps during the day and when using my DonJoy ice machine for icing my shoulder; icing has kept the swelling down in my shoulder. Thank you again for all the wonderful tips. I really appreciate the video.
Had my right shoulder repaired In October 23. Great Video 👍🏿 I had prunes 🤣 which did help me going toilet day3 couldn’t find prune juice stool softener 🤣😂😁 I had laxido ddnt do much but I kept taking it! Omeprazole to help stomach! It’s an experience! It will get better gradually with physio. Keep your strong meds tends to remind you especially if u live in a wintery country. 🧊 it now and again cold peas not direct wrap in a thing cloth so you can feel the chill on arm. Great video. Speedy recovery ❤️🩹 I’m in wk 6 and going strong 💪🏿
Enjoyed your video informative and funny. I fell dislocated and broke my shoulder I’ve been waiting almost a month to have any kind of surgery done. Set up for surgery this Tuesday, May 14 finally. Thanks for the information
Thank you for your "2 cents." You have been a great blessing to me! I've been watching a lot of TH-cam videos myself. Everybody's experience is somewhat different so I'm gleaning a little from everybody. I'm preparing for my surgery.
Thanks for this, i am on day five as well, best advice is to start taking the pain killers as soon as possible, no easy way of saying this but the pain was quiet severe, first couple of days are rough but the best thing I found was a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and applied to the area, best wishes to anyone waiting for this op
Sidney Motley same here. How are you feeling? Did you get it already? They are going to repair my bicep anchor and I hope my arm can heal and look normal afterwards
Great video, thanks so much for taking the time to make it! And the one handed can opener amd stretchy waist pants - I wouldn't even have thought of these in advance, but makes perfect sense. You really did a service here for us. Thanks so much!
Thank you. Helpful video. Glad you mentioned the water retention since I also experienced that and wasn't prepared for it. Good planning. Definitely start those stool softeners ahead of time!
Update: I've now had my surgery for a massive rotator cuff tear. No pain at all during or after surgery and no pain meds except Advil once in a while. Had the nerve block which allows for lighter general anesthesia. This is definitely the way to go. I actually drove the next day (without surgeons blessing or knowledge) but I wouldn't recommend it. Anesthesia after effects are worse than the surgery but still not that bad. Things like sore throat tickle, woozyiness, peeing a lot, etc. 4 days latter I could drive with no problem except your sling gets in the way. I also got a Wonder Care sling which is MUCH lighter, cooler, cheaper, and less bulky than the traditional abduction sling but does the same thing. I added a pad/spacer between my body and arm. 3 weeks after surgery now and still no pain except during physical therapy when they push the limits trying to get full motion back. It is very important to get as much motion with PT before surgery too. The most important things to do are: get a wide (50 inches or so) powered recliner, shirt with snaps along the sides for easy access, a very experienced physical therapist, Advil, practice using the hand not being operated on well before surgery, get a computer mouse for the good shoulder side and practice, exercise your lower arm and hand but keep your upper arm stationary. Also get a webbed shower sling and stool for the shower. Finally if you use a hair dryer clamp it to a microphone boom stand so it's right above your head. This works so well I will keep it after I'm healed. Good luck
I am six days out of surgery. I really don’t need the pain meds anymore. But I ice a lot. I also do the squeezing of the hand and stretching of the fingers I do that pretty much all day long. I have trouble getting in and out of the sling by myself so I still need some help with that mainly because the release thing is just very stiff and I can’t squeeze it enough to release it. What I do is pull the neck brace over the next thing just over my head. That way I’m pretty much out of the sling. I cannot get the waist chest strap on and off myself. I need help with that. But I feel pretty good overall. I have my daughter has prepared food for me that’s all stored in the refrigerator and in the freezer. I also have groceries delivered right to my door as needed. And I have great friends who help me out. If you live alone, you need help for at least three days preferably more. I have five incisions in my shoulder my pain was really high those first few days. I needed tremendous help with everything. And I was on two Percocets every four hours instead of one Percocet every seven hours. I called the doctor and I got his permission to do that. The third or fourth day post surgery is the hardest for sure. So good luck because each day it does get a little bit better but those first 3 to 4 days are tough. And you need help in the house with you for those First 3 to 4 days. Good luck.
New subscriber here, I'm waiting on my surgery date, I seen my dr on March 18th, was waiting to get scheduled and the nurse came in and told me the dr had just been notified not to schedule any surgeries, becuase of this pandemic. not sure when I am going to get to have it, our governor is slowly opening things back up in phases. I have been watching many videos about this surgery, but I have to say yours has been the best and most informative, Thanks for sharing everything, I appreciate it I've had many questions that hadn't been answered but U answered them in this video. Thanks so much for your help.....Take care, stay safe and God bless U always
Tena, I am 10 days post-op. Was supposed to have the surgery March 17th but was delayed too May 21 St due to the Covid 19 situation. Things I've discovered along the way: Sleep in a recliner if you've got one, if not, get a full body "boppy" with lots of extra pillows to supplement. Order a mesh sling for showering. Use microfiber type cloths to line the inside of your sling and use next to your sling along your neck. They get warm. Have the staff show you how to apply the sling properly before surgery. (They put mine on in recovery over a large bandage and an ice pack, had to figure it out at home) This guy actually gives a lot of good tips as well. Esp taking a stool softener and hydrating, getting some outdoor air and some exercise, taking pain meds as your skaline block wears off. Write down when need taken last so you don't lose track. I added multi vitamin, extra D and C and melatonin 3 mg before bedtime. I watched some utube videos after the fact I wish I would've seen prior to my surgery. Icing is key!!!! Good luck. Chris
I had a massive tear that fell off the bone of the supraspinatus distal clavicle Subcromial decompression Went through nine months of physical therapy and it didn’t work so now I’m having my second surgery two years and three months after the first one the first surgeon didn’t cut my clavicle right left a hole in my bicep and my suprapinatus didn’t heal right I had four physical therapist my surgeon kept firing them so finally I got four opinions and now I got the best surgeon in the world he’s guaranteeing me he will fix my shoulder so I have another week to prepare but I think you did a good job making this video now I’m not sure if I have to have shoulder replacement The surgeon will know more when he gets inside I will come back and let you know how it goes
Hope this guy made a full successful recovery. I need surgery and have been avoiding it for 2 years now but after gaining 60 pounds due to not working out I need ro lose weight. The pain has returned now that I am active again so the surgery is needed as I don't want to hurt myself again. I just hope I can do this. 39 male🤙
I'll be going for surgery tomorrow and am getting a lot of info and encouragement from this video. Of all the videos I've watched, this one offers the most useful and practical information of all so I am looking forward to a comfortable recovery experience. Thank you so much for this practical and encouraging video.
@@TheTruthHurtsYou I'm on day 9 post op - 3 of the 4 larger tendons that make up the 'cuff' plus biceps tenodesis (repair). I think you had the biceps repair too and wondered if you had some pain in the bicep muscle itself anytime postop ? i'm having that and it worries me that the biceps muscle is not attached etc... hopefully i'm misinterpreting the sensation. A note on these surgeries more broadly - they are extremely painful postop and IMO the care teams should do a much better job of setting expectation of pain once they send us home. Also - the lack of sleep - which is pretty widespread postop - and its implications. These surgeries are not for the faint of heart and folks need to know that. Lastly - thanks for a very helpful video - you made things easier for a lot of us. cheers!
you did all most all the same things I did. I'm on second shoulder surgery day 3. couple of ideas for anyone watching. carry your cell phone in the top crack of your sling. you'll have it if the doctor calls. press n seal food wrap to keep incision dry. the surgery is not that bad (arthroscopic), I've had both shoulders done. the first 6 years ago (total success). everything this guy has said is spot on tried and true. lots of walking and hydration. stool softener is important, pain meds shut down the digestive process. only take pain meds to sleep at night if needed. I take a lot of supplements, vitamin C, collagen protein, whey. bromelain is good for swelling and bruising (tell your doc). eat a super quality diet!!! any supps that are good for circulation. don't stretch to much to soon!!
So happy I found these videos. Getting my second mri soon. Tore supraspinatus 50%. Will definitely follow your advice. Very scared. Thanks for posting the truthhurtsyou
I cant believe how easy the recovery has been. Day 3 and its nothing compared to bilateral knee replacements. 3 basic arm exercises for 6 weeks then the physio starts.
Good luck. I just had my left shoulder done 4 days ago. So far so good. I am still getting the meds out of my system and still have a cauch. But going well
BeeFriendlyApiary I just had the surgery a week ago. Lots of good advice here. One thing I would add is get a cooling therapy machine. It’s not usually covered by insurance but it’s well worth it for swelling and pain control. You can do a search to see the different kinds. Mine is a Breg Glacier. I can’t imagine doing this without it. Day 2 was the roughest for me. Breathing exercises helped me get through. Other than that it hasn’t been too bad. Yesterday was my first PT and I was very encouraged how well I’m doing already. I hope your surgery goes well!
Had my left done 7 years ago. Woke up to bad pain. I thought it would become much less paiful after a few days. I was so wrong. The pain was searing and when I ran out the only pain script and asked for another, the doctor wouldn’t. My wife would leave for work and I’m propped up in a recliner with tears of pain. Now I’m going to have to do the right side, my dominant arm. I’m just scared about how it’s going to go.
@@canislupis3129 - right there with ya’. I’ve had to use my right are as the dominant arm and I can tell through rehab it’s much weaker and painful than my left. ( surgery shoulder).
Great video on my 5th day today recommend flushable wet wipes I’m right handed as well. I would nick name the experience of wiping “the stranger” so use reg toilet paper and wet wipes you’ll be good to go. Everything you said was spot on
If it is of any consolation, my surgery was a complete success. My healing time was expected to be about 1 year to get back to around 80 to 90% strength but it took me only 6 months.
Patrice Alexander Hi Patrice! Have you had the surgery yet? I see you comment on a lot of the same videos I’m watching for info. Good luck! (I’ll have surgery in 2 months) I’m so ready to be out of pain. *thanks for posting this video @TheTruthHurtsYou - this helps a ton!
Jeanne Bullock , hi there, yes I am 11 days out from surgery. The pain has been a lot tougher than I expected, and my young ortho doc has been very, very conservative with my pain meds, for better or worse. 😢😠. But yesterday was a turning point for the better, and tonight I've slept on my side finally, in my bed, so that has been like heaven. All the videos have helped so much, I am so thankful for everyone with all their positivity and wisdom. It is heartwarming. Good luck with your surgery, I am sad you have to suffer for two months. I will be happy to answer any questions you might have in the meantime. Good luck! ❤️
@@patricealexander5133It sounds like you are on the right track. It was around the 1 week mark or so when I could finally sleep on my side (with the aid of multiple pillows). By now you should be weening yourself off the pain meds and maybe only take one before going to bed to take the edge off. Some pain is a good thing as the body naturally tells you what you can and cannot do. Here is the best advice that I can give you at this time. Around the two week mark, you should be ready for some physio (with an expert). I attended physio once a week and got the therapist to make me a program that I could practice 3 times every single day until the next appointment. This is very important. Many patients only do therapy once a week for an hour at the doctor's office and figure that is enough. Even on some days when I wasn't feeling great, I would at least try some therapy. I guarantee that this will speed up the healing time and doing some walking and cardio once a day made me feel great. After 3 or 4 weeks of passive exercise, I gradually introduced active therapy (with doctor's permission). Just don't get overconfident and be patient.
Legend! Great comments for those of us dwelling/ worrying/ sweating/ petrified in scarey potential, pre-operation territory. I say dwelling in pertrified, scared territory as my doctor says I have a full torn suraspinatus and I need surgery. I still haven't said 'yes'. I'm 50 years old. At the moment I have no pain and good movement. This morning I did 3 sets of 20 push ups and 3 sets of 6 chin-ups. This is less than what I can do normally but I feel like I am recovering. I cannot believe or accept that I need surgery! It's true, I am absolutely weaker in the right arm. My training regime is at 50 to 60% of the norm. Please help! What do people think? I don't know what to do. I am stared stiff of the consequences of surgery. Thanks in advance for your help.
I'm a few years older than you, and had surgery on my non-dominant shoulder just over 2 years ago (injured playing hockey). Not a complete tear like yours, also had some bicep repair, and it's 100 % healed - range of motion, everything, no limitations. I injured my dominant shoulder in my game 3 weeks ago and it's not improving much, and I'm having an MRI next week. Not excited, know the inconvenience that is likely coming, and that first day after the injury was depressing and I had some tears. Picked myself up, got my home ready for a physically limited stretch of a few months, made lists of stuff I needed to do, to buy, and watched some of these videos to remind myself of the experience, and I'm readying myself to take it head on if surgery is again required, knowing that I'll properly rest it, and put in the PT time, and followups at home in between PT sessions, and I'll be good as new. I've also lost 48 pounds in 2019, I'm walking daily, so I'd be heading into the process in a better condition. I can't believe the pushups and chinups you're able to do, wow. But, these things, especially a complete tear, don't heal on their own, or over time, they need to be repaired. Good luck to you, surround yourself with support, know you'll have some rough patches, some rough days, but more so - know you'll get through it, and you're gonna be alright, know that. Best to you Wayne.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I am having surgery in 2 weeks. Thanks for the advice, it will help me to prepare and hopefully reduce my discomfort. I'll be taking care of myself, so preparation is key.
Great video thanks and hope u are feeling better. I will need to have this done and concerned with doctor saying i will not be able to sleep on right side once it gets better. Do u know if this is so?
You are one smart dude. I am having surgery in a week and I am having anxiety over it. It is a partial tear and bone spur. While the doc is in there he will check my bicep. I get sick from anesthesia and pain meds so don’t know what to do about that. The doc is prescribing Zofran to help with the nausea.
How could you possibly get in and out of a bathtub by yourself with an immobilized right arm? I can see myself falling and hurting my arm even more. I would like to see a demonstration of that. I like the idea of renting a recliner with a left side control.
I went to Walmart to buy “left handed “ toilet paper. The guy there said there’s no such thing, I told him there was and we got into an argument. He finally threw a pack at me and said “here , shove this, it should work”.
I didn't realize that I would get this many responses and had some viewers request that I post a follow up video with a few more tips that helped me heal 100% (or better than before). Stay tuned.
TheTruthHurtsYou - thanks for this video - I’m going in next month & im trying to prepare - so I really appreciate you taking the time to do this - super helpful!
I had the surgery 9 days ago. When they put me in recovery, I was unable to breathe on my own. They put me on a ventilator overnight. I am doing better now. I have lupus & Fibromylagia and 2 types of arthritis. The doctor said it may have been the Lupus and other factors working against me. I have asthma also. I was the first with this surgery to stay overnight. The nurses didn't know how to dress me. My daughter inlaw figured out how to put on my shirt. 😞❤ 😊
Hi there. Thanks for the tips. I am having my surgery this coming Thurs 15th Oct, 2020. I was wondering how I was going to dress and undress so your video was very helpful.
I've watched a few different videos of post shoulder surgery, and yours is the first that doesn't make me feel upset. Everyone else talks about having your helper do this and that, but I won't have a helper. I was starting to think it would be impossible. I can't tell you how reassuring it is to see someone get through this independently. All of your tips are great, and I was taking notes as I watched! I have to say that I'm very worried about the left-handed bathroom thing. I have some time, so I'm practicing 😅 I can't move my arm very much at all right now, so I have to put on Shirts like you already. I was prepared to buy some special shirts rubbing it would be harder after the surgery, but now I think I'll just buy some oversized ones instead. Did you drive yourself around? I'll have to, even though they say not to. I'm guessing everyone except for me has a dishwasher because I haven't seen that mentioned yet. As much as I hate to, I think I'll have to use disposable plates and utensils for a while. Thanks so much for posting this video. I'm off to see if you did post any follow-ups.
How are you holding up? I am getting surgery in 2 weeks and I also won't have any help post-op. I bought some oversize clothes from the thrift store and stocked up on extra pillows. Also somebody suggested baby wipes instead of TP, so I got some of that. Anything else you can recommend?
@@tjsogmcMy surgery was four months ago and I'm doing pretty good now. I ended up wearing stretchy tank tops that were easy to step into and pull up. That was by far the easiest way to get a shirt on. I discovered that it was extremely painful for me to bend over to pick something up off the floor, so my sister sent me an extended Grabber which was very helpful. I was very clumsy for a while, dropping anything from pills to papers. Flushable wipes definitely made things easier. I used a cheap mesh sling that I bought at Walmart for about $6 to use in the shower because I was terrified of damaging things. I bought a lot of frozen meals and other packaged foods that would be easy for me to handle with one hand. I ended up not being able to drive for 6 weeks, so I had groceries delivered which I was very thankful for having that option. Be sure you get your prescriptions for pain medication filled before your surgery, along with laxative / stool softener, and keep them where you'll be spending most of your time. I put mine in a small plastic tool box that had latches on it because I have pets and I didn't want them to get into it. Lozenges and hard candy we're good for the first few days because the pain medication and anti-nausea medication made my mouth very dry. Keep track of when you take your medication either by writing down on paper or typing it into your phone, because you will get confused. Especially when you're taking different medications with different time intervals. I also bought a lot of bottled water to have on hand because I wouldn't be able to use my water filter and I'm picky about how my water tastes. I opened those water bottles by sitting on the couch, putting the bottle between my feet to hold it while using my good hand to twist off the lid. Any kind of Jar or bottle that had a lid that was too tight I opened that way. I'm not going to lie, the first several days were pretty rough, but I made it through. It would have been nice to have someone here, but I also feel like I would have just wanted to be left alone. I did have a couple people that I could have called if there was anything major that I needed. After the first couple of weeks I felt okay enough to go out to dinner with a friend who came and picked me up. If you have a friend nearby that can visit or pick you up occasionally, it does wonders for you mentally. Any other questions, just ask.
@@DMB088 thanks for the tips. I bought a second hand recliner today because almost everyone says its the best thing. I also got 2 dozen food containers with the partitions and I'm cooking extra meals to put in the deep freezer so all I have to do is microwave. A pill organizer sounds like a good idea, I'll get one tomorrow. I don't like the grocery delivery, but I have a friend who drives a cab and he said he would take me to the store if I need to. I should have about 3 or 4 weeks of food stocked, so I think I'll be ok. I better stock up on pet food as well, thanks for reminding me. Ain't gonna lie, I've had surgery on my knee in the past and it didn't worry me as much as this one does. Hella long recovery time on the shoulder... I really appreciate your help. Thanks
@@tjsogmc A recliner was a MUST for me too. Slept in it for 6 weeks! Is the handle on your good side? If it's not, you can still use it, just leave the foot rest out and carefully straddle it to get in and out. Sounds like you are well-prepared. Good luck, and follow Dr's orders no matter what other people tell you. Staying in the sling and not using those muscles are key to healing. Doesn't matter how great your might feel, it still takes the same amount of time for the healing process of those tendons to attach to the bone. You don't want to disturb that healing because it's like trying to glue something and moving out partway through. It's not going to stick as well after that. Good luck!
@@tjsogmc oh yeah, a good thing to do is to go about your day one day with your arm in a sling not using it for anything. You'll quickly find out what will be an issue that you can alter before your surgery
I just had surgery 5 days ago and oh boy it's been rough. Hard to get comfortable to sleep even in recliner. My dr ordered an ice machine for my shoulder and that's helped so much. I didn't have good use of my shoulder for month before so I had time to practice using my leg hand for things. A tip I have for meds is to put them in a bowl so you don't have to try and open the kid proof cap with one hand but that only is suggested if no kids in the house. As I woman, I'm wearing sun dresses that just slip on and no bra. I walk around my backyard and house because this virus has us locked down so I can't go to the gym. Feeling swollen and need to work it out. Dr's should tell you to take a stool softener in the beginning because I had the same problem.
Great info. Thank You. I'm scheduled to have rotator cuff surgery 2 weeks from today. I'm very glad I found your channel. Great prep ideas. Also very helpful in what to expect during and following the surgery. There are 2 things I dread the most. One is that I'm allergic to most of the good pain killers. So I obtained a Cold Therapy System. It circulates ice cold water around the injured area. The other thing i dread is as you mentioned is doing the paperwork after a movement. I guess the only good tip is "whatever works" I guess by now all is good with you recovery. Thanks again.
This guy sure has a good attitude. He looks very fit too. I bet that helps a lot ahead of time. I’m in terrible shape. 62 and way over weight. I’m all ready taking Tylenol with codene for other injuries and old operation sites that are going arthritic and trying to pull screws and metal apart. I’m very worried now about getting my 2nd shoulder done after the first one went so poorly. My new doctor wants to mri my left shoulder operation of 7 years ago because it is not working well at all. The more of these I read the more I realize what a chicken I am.
Hello sir....I havent decided to go ahead with rotator cuff surgery yet. I must say I prefer the sling you have than those big monstrosities TH-cam shows. Hope by now you're back to normal.
Long road.. week 6 it's Feb 10, 2021 had surgery on 12/18/2020... Still very painful, sore, limited no pain meds but sometimes the pain is unbearable.. learning to be left handed.
It’s been 6 months since Zi had my right shoulder done. The first 2 months were rough. The 3rd month was still painful, but I noticed improvement. By month 4, it was much better. Phy Th went on 4 months. I still can’t reach behind my back and raise my hand up. My Phy Th told me to do all my exercises every single day for a year, or it would most likely tear again.
I'm having my surgery in 8hrs... cant sleep I've been watching all these videos. I appreciate the advice in advance. My surgery's in Toronto also. Not looking forward to the pain.
Please contact me if you need help to get through this. It is tough and it is painful but it's bearable with good pain management. I had a torn, labrum & supraspinatus, bone spur, reshape acromin and removal of the bursa.
Hey. Adrian from Halifax, NS. I have the same problem with my two shoulders. Waiting for surgery. Thank you so much for your advices. I hope some day you can make another video and tell what happened after your recovery day 5, and I hope to have some kind of contact with you by email, and learn more about your recovery.
I can imagine the pain. Getting to sleep....I did a 3.5 hour workout 18 days ago. I am 66. Guess what happened? F... Up my neck, and both shoulders. A pain nightmare for 8 days. It was a nightmare getting on and off my bed. A nightmare finding a position so I could sleep. Woke up every 2 hours. I did Midol every 6 hours. Ice massage on my neck, and on each shoulder. It was painful getting to my kitchen cabinet. Putting on a shirt. Live by myself with 3 rescued Filipino dogs. I was really scared, helpless feeling. Thank God, on the 8th day I could move around. 12th day I could move around. Sleep. The ice and Midol were life savers. 18th day today, I do my workout. This time, slow, easy, moves. Slow easy on the speedbag. Slow kicks, punches. Easy, smooth on the stationary bike. Slow, smooth stretches. 1.5 to 2 hours max. And, every other day. Need that day of recovery, cannot do everyday, anymore. Paz...
I'm having this surgery in September. I've got a full thickness tear from playing basketball with my grandson! My husband will be my extra hand thankfully. I'm really nervous about the surgery but appreciate the tips.
When I had my inguinal hernia surgery the anesthesiologist, at my request, added some "anti-nausea" medicine to the general anesthesia that I was given intravenously and when I came out of it instead of feeling nauseated I was so hungry that I asked for something to eat and they gave me graham crackers and apple sauce. Of course, hernia surgery doesn't take as long as shoulder surgery. But still, can't the recovery room nausea be prevented with medication? I hope my rotator cuff tear doesn't need surgery. I'm 76 and in pretty good shape but the thought of shoulder surgery at my age is a bit frightening. Not being able to sleep worries me the most.
But It was painful on the 3rd day seem to get much easier after the 7the day with no pain meds at all other then tylenol and ibuprofen hope your surgery was as effective as mine
Surgery was on 4/20 left shoulder ..the pain is awful!! I’m on the schedule with my meds ..the sling is also brutal...right shoulder was done 10/19 I knew it was going to suck !! It sucks much worse than I remember ... best of luck to everyone dealing with this 🥴
I had surgery about five days ago I wouldn't do this unless I'm in pain and I can't get along with my daily routine and had no other choice and that is the only reason I had the surgery. It was unbearable couldn't sleep ,put on a shirt or drive without pain everyday, so after months of therapy that didn't work I had the surgery. Yes its painful but I can tell you that it's not the same pain and I believe it was worth it. I only take the pain killer when I go to bed all day I just use the muscle relaxer and anti inflammatory medication no ice yet but I will in a day or so I hope this helps someone who is unsure about this I just want to get back to a normal life without this pain because I have herniated disc problems also so something had to be done one way or another.
Great video, thanks, I'll have my left shoulder done I guess in about 2 months, you doing pretty good , keep doing and you be back almost back to normal, good luck
I see a lot that do ice. I've never been an icer, so 7 weeks post op I've never iced my shoulder. I'm over 4 weeks into PT and the therapist states I'm doing great. I also lifted weights my whole adult life and therapist states that it helps immensely in recovery. Did your therapy go pretty smooth?
I realize it's been 4.5 years since your surgery but your video really taught me a couple of things I did not know. You explain everything so clearly and to the point, which is very useful. I will be having left shoulder surgery in 18 days and am trying to prepare as best I can. Would like to know how long did it take you to get completely recovered? Thanks for sharing.
Had two cuff tears 180 degrees from each other and bicep was completely detached and I had painful bone Spurs. Doctor fixed it all 5 days ago and I’m feeling pretty shitty.
Take it easy I'm in Week 6 still hurting still cannot lift my arm.. pain attacks are the worse but it will be ok. It's tolerable. One tip... Baby wipes I buy them by the huge packs and use them for everything... Everywhere. I have my own packed bag of my necessities when I leave from home. Have a speedy recovery
@@GwenGoodall40 when I was hurt it took a year before I could raise my arm above my head, that was twenty years ago, I’ve been living with the pain that’s been getting worse the past couple years. I know what to expect I’m just hoping to be able to do push ups again and be able to do the things I did before my accident. My muscles are already able to lift my arm up so I’m a unique patient. I think I’ll have a faster recovery than most because the surrounding muscles took up the slack. Having my bicep back is going to be a bonus.
You didn't mention if you use a computer as a part of your daily activities. If you do, how long did it take before you could type on a keyboard? Thanks.
Hi. Really good info in this.I am two days out of surgery and like you experienced the shooting pain so gone straight onto the pain killers - hospital prescribed 30 mg codeine which takes the edge of the pain. Wholly agree with the clothing tip. I bought extra large t shirts, track suit bottoms and slip on shoes. Incidentally, i have had previous knee surgery and the first time was very nauseas and physically sick within 3hours of coming round. Basically this is your body trying to reject the morphine. Had 3 subsequent surgeries and mentioned the nausea prior to each surgery and have been given an anti sickness medication along with the morphine and have been fine with no ill effects. I am in the UK so don’t know if this is available to you in the US but worth asking. I am a side sleeper and find it very difficult to sleep on my back so bought a v shaped pillow to prop up my arm and help me sleep on my back and so far this seems to be working. Only issue i have had is trying to lift the shoulder to get off the bed to go the bathroom as difficult to support the shoulder as you rise up. If anybody has any tips on this? In the meantime merry xmas to all and good luck with the surgery.
Hi Martin, the anti-sickness meds are a good idea for those affected by the pain meds. I'm from Canada but I'm sure that it would have been available if needed. I weaned myself off the pain meds by the end of the first week and took one every so often before bedtime for another couple of weeks. As far as the stiffness getting out of bed, there is no magic cure. The good news is that after about a week or so, the stiffness subsides very gradually. I found that taking my arm out of the brace once in a while during the day and doing some very controlled stretching (gently bending and straightening the elbow, squeezing a tennis ball, and leaning forwards to dangle my arm with momentum activated circular motions) helped reduce the stiffness over time. In my case, I was instructed by my surgeon to start attending light physiotherapy after about two weeks or so. I find that the biggest mistake that anyone can make is to assume that performing physio only once a week will be sufficient enough to expediate the healing process. It won't. I attended my appointments once a week for 6 weeks (since my benefits ran out) and then religiously performed the same exercises at least three or four times a day until the next appointment when the exercise levels were increased. That accelerated the healing process significantly. Hope this helps and good luck!
I had the same surgery you did, just wondering how you are faring now? I'm 12 days post-op. Really enjoyed your video even if I watched it after my surgery...lol and I'm totally with you on the "three days of no movement..." that was painful. Kind of think there should be post-op videos like this through the hospitals...it would make life so much easier after surgery, especially taking a shower, or bathing.
I go next week. Complete tear. I have an ice machine cuff but it goes on under my sling . I don't want to be all padded up. I may just use ice bags instead?? Any tips would be appreciated.
Not sure about this surgery with this gentleman. Most of the shoulder support is much more complicated than this 'sling.' I will be getting surgery in about 11 days and I am going to be 'strapped' into a device with foam support pads on the waist and near the back of the elbow. If this is a Canadian patient, I'm sure the healthcare up North is a bit dicey. Thanks for the info. Might do my own video diary.
Michael Sargent , looks exactly like the lightweight sling the hospital system sent me home with on the day of my surgery. I’m 18 days post op and he’s spot on. Great video, good information and he’s covered just about everything I’ve gone through so far. And he has a fairly good sense of humor. Wish I’d seen this video before my surgery. Only difference is..seems it’s cold where he is and it’s hot as hades here. And I ended up buying several slings until I found a brand that I was comfortable with. He pretty well covered it all. Well done.
I have a bone spur and a lot of inflammation in my right shoulder and getting an MRI next week to see if there is tendon damage or anything else. Been getting cortisone shots a couple times a year and last one didn’t do much. Good info in your video firsthand. Did you get open surgery or orthoscopic?
I don't recall exactly how many days I kept it on but if you have been instructed to remove it after 5 to 7 days, then do so and keep the area sterilized. I followed my doctor's instructions to the letter, and all turned out fine for me. Good luck!
Hi Jane, I used my other arm but it wasn't easy at first. I also suggest using a rubber tub mat attached to the bottom of the tub for extra traction and then just taking lots of time getting in and out.
Hello, my name is Ivan. Great video on your post op recovery. I was supposed to get surgery done on my left shoulder this past Tuesday September 8th 2020, but it was postponed because my blood pressure spiked high as my surgery was about to begin. I guess I was way too nervous. Now I have to get cleared by my cardiologist. I did get pretty much everything I needed ready before my surgery. I just need a second hand reclining chair or as you mentioned on the video that renting a reclining chair is an option. Now; on the video you didn't mention about the use of ice packs on the shoulder to help with the swelling. Did you ever apply ice packs to your shoulder? So the pain was gone by the 5th day? And the hospital provide you with a sling or did you have to purchase one?
Yeah the first time you try to use the other hand to wipe your ass. Why is this SO hard!?
He's the best
Definitely good info, had right shoulder done today, watched your video couple times, as he sits here typing with left hand…lol
You are super smart about preppin for being independent!!! I just had my surgery 3 weeks ago and I'm feeling much better.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I'm facing rotator cuff and bicep surgery on May 10th. Honestly I'm scared to death.
Y stool softener?
@@tylinwilson2632 pain meds (and anesthesia) will give you constipation in the worst way.
Great video, thank you. I’ll be having rotator cuff surgery after the holidays. Thank you for all of the great tips.
Very informative and nice to see what you will actually go through and that it's not that terrible
Good luck.
Awesome info thanks. My surgery in 9 days😢
I have been watching many videos about this surgery, but I have to say yours has been the best and most informative, Thanks for sharing everything, I appreciate it
I've had many questions that hadn't been answered but U answered them in this video. Thanks so much for your help.....Take care, stay safe and God bless U always
Tena, I am 10 days post-op. Was supposed to have the surgery March 17th but was delayed too May 21 St due to the Covid 19 situation.
Things I've discovered along the way:
Sleep in a recliner if you've got one, if not, get a full body "boppy" with lots of extra pillows to supplement.
Good luck. Chris
Great video, thanks for all the helpful tips. I’m seeing my surgeon soon to arrange a date.
Most helpful video I have watched. 😊
It truly was
Very informative, thank you so much for your time to make the video. Im having my surgery tomorrow morning 😖
I wish you luck. Be diligent with the rehab advice from physio but don't rush the healing.
All great info. I’m on day 4 and doing fine. Only thing is -35 C here in Alberta. So I do get help with my big coat. So still getting outside.
Lastly - thanks for a very helpful video - you made things easier for a lot of us. cheers!
Very helpful and informative, thank you (typing with one hand and it's my day 5 too)
Me too!!
you did all most all the same things I did.
Hey man have you an email i can contact you on about the surgery?
This video is essential for getting thru Post- Op
So happy I found these videos. Getting my second mri soon. Tore supraspinatus 50%. Will definitely follow your advice. Very scared. Thanks for posting the truthhurtsyou
Hi there, i have the exact same injury. Did you have surgery? How was it? How are you now?
Turns out I had a labrum tear and not rotator cuff. Good luck to you!
Great advice, thank you. 🙏🏻
But going well
I just had surgery last week...man woke up to a world of hurt, 1st 2nd days were rough...slowly getting better though..have a good recovery bro😎
How are you now? I have a pending surgery
I highly suggest getting a nerve block if it’s possible!! I had one and can’t imagine the pain without it! I’m on day 2 from surgery.
Great info waiting on my shoulder surgery in two weeks
How was it?
wonderful vidio, my surgery is april 8 and i'm a nervous wreck. You made things easier
Good luck to you!!! Mine is 5/13!! Yikes!!!
Sounds like you all set, my surgery day set for January 27,2022 enjoy your video
@Brenda Mller I have surgery in 3 days, January 13, 2022😵💫 I hope your surgery goes well.
I’ve never seen anyone so prepared ‼️cheers to u‼️
Thank you for sharing your story! I enjoyed it very much.
Great video on my 5th day today recommend flushable wet wipes I’m right handed as well. I would nick name the experience of wiping “the stranger” so use reg toilet paper and wet wipes you’ll be good to go. Everything you said was spot on
Thanks for the great suggestions. I'm very scared to have this surgery, and these videos help tremendously!
Its not bad at all, but physical therapy is hell smh. Good Luck
Thank you! I greatly appreciate your help!!!👍👍👍 Hope you're doing well!
Thank you so much, this information was very helpful and encouraging
You are one smart dude. I am having surgery in a week and I am having anxiety over it. It is a partial tear and bone spur. While the doc is in there he will check my bicep. I get sick from anesthesia and pain meds so don’t know what to do about that. The doc is prescribing Zofran to help with the nausea.
Zofran is worth its weight in gold!
Thank you for the simple and straightforward advice. I will follow you.
I have surgery in a week. Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you so much sir for that video. I am on day 8 after my op. Fortunately my left arm is the one immobilized 😁.
I learn from your video awesome, I will be like you next month have same problems shoulder surgery.how long recovery will take? Thanks 🙏
The other thing i dread is as you mentioned is doing
the paperwork after a movement. I guess the only good tip is "whatever works"
I guess by now all is good with you recovery.
The more of these I read the more I realize what a chicken I am.
ive had knee replacements and this. this anint nothin. Dont overdo the pain meds....... stay clear and be careful. lay about.
Thanks mate. Im 50 & waiting on a date to get mine done here in Aus. Shit'n mself actually lol.
How ya goin with it now?
Take it easy.
Rod...
Use ice religiously, keep on top of your pain and take your meds.
Hey. Adrian from Halifax, NS. I have the same problem with my two shoulders. Waiting for surgery. Thank you so much for your advices. I hope some day you can make another video and tell what happened after your recovery day 5, and I hope to have some kind of contact with you by email, and learn more about your recovery.
Yes please do part 2 when u feel better
Paz...
I'd love to hear an update on how you're doing now.
I'm having this surgery in September. I've got a full thickness tear from playing basketball with my grandson! My husband will be my extra hand thankfully. I'm really nervous about the surgery but appreciate the tips.
Linda Blanchard this is day 3 for me. Def prep meals and practice using other hand if it’s your dominant. I had my right dominant done. Good luck
Thanks for the tips! I’m having my surgery in 2 weeks.
How did it go ?
this was great, im about to go in fr my 3rd shoulder surgery and you figured out stuff that i still hadn't thought of! thanks a bunch!
Interesting. Why 3 surgeries?
Reminds me of the one uncle that we all have that's a great storyteller 😂
Great video, thanks, I'll have my left shoulder done I guess in about 2 months, you doing pretty good , keep doing and you be back almost back to normal, good luck
thank you very much for these tips and time
Thanks for the video,, I am going for rotator cuff surgery in 4 weeks.
me too! Im August 13th -when is yours?
JADE STEVENS Friday August 9th
Have you had surgery on the left shoulder with the 70% tear, or are you just going to live with it?
I’ve just had op and am using ice packs at least twice a day x
I had an ice machine. It was fantastic!
Since that sling is useless how did it work out
Could you post from day 2 onwards with exercises
You didn't mention if you use a computer as a part of your daily activities. If you do, how long did it take before you could type on a keyboard? Thanks.
It took a couple of weeks before I could even attempt typing and even then, it was ugly as I couldn't extend my arm for quite a while.
Hope this helps and good luck!
boy my sling was awful went around my waist and had metal in it it was unbearable
Larry Wheeler how did you operation go?
Thx for all the great tips!!!!! 😁
Michael Sargent yeah, that sling is wimpy compared to the contraption I have on.
Well done.
On day 4 and I feel like the pain is starting to let up. Unless I move to fast of course
How are you feeling. Also, how did you injure both shoulders- body building?
Did you do a video of further into recovery ie 5 to 10 weeks.?
I’m fixing to have rotator cuff surgery how bad does it hurt and how long do you have to wear the sling for?
I have a bone spur and a lot of inflammation in my right shoulder and getting an MRI next week to see if there is tendon damage or anything else.
Been getting cortisone shots a couple times a year and last one didn’t do much. Good info in your video firsthand. Did you get open surgery or orthoscopic?
How are you doing? I myself have pain on my right shoulder waiting on mri. Orthopedic dr gave me my first cortisone shot
Are you sure you're supposed to keep that big thick Band-Aid on your shoulder for 2 weeks and not one week? The nurse told me one week, 5 days
I don't recall exactly how many days I kept it on but if you have been instructed to remove it after 5 to 7 days, then do so and keep the area sterilized. I followed my doctor's instructions to the letter, and all turned out fine for me. Good luck!
@@TheTruthHurtsYou thank you
Curious to know how you took a bath so early on? How did you get out of the bathtub without putting weight on your arm?
Hi Jane, I used my other arm but it wasn't easy at first. I also suggest using a rubber tub mat attached to the bottom of the tub for extra traction and then just taking lots of time getting in and out.
It's hard I felt like a seal I was rolling around trying to get on my knees... Thank God for spouses
Also at what week after surgery were you able to drive?
What were your symptoms before surgery?
I'm so scared. What if i have no help after surgery?
Can i still manage? Thanks in advance
