I realize this is a 10 Year old video but I'm so glad that you made it and that I found your channel. I've got the exact same motor in my work car with 70 psi compression on one cylinder (I'm assuming burnt exhaust valve). It still runs fine but was going to scrap the car when it finally died. However after watching this step by step process I'm thinking I might try to repair it myself. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to make it..
Nice video. For lapping I like to use a short length of stiff tubing (e.g. fuel line) clamped on a drill bit and slide it over the valve stems, then gently lap them on a low RPM whilst keeping my (greased up) finger on the valve head to keep it seated (alternatively you could use an old inline skate roller bearing to press the valve down into the seat, even better). Works like a charm and makes it really nice and uniform.
Your welcome, just posted most of the re-install. however i hate to say on this setup there is no adjustment, the 2 peace head is machined in a way that once compressed on the hydraulic lifters no adjustment is needed. in the re-install video this may make more sense. thanks again
Great demo, Will! I've always wanted to do this kind of work but, so far, have never had the opportunity. You should use a headlamp so you don't have to hold the penlight in your mouth -- REI have a cheap little hiking LED headlamp that is useful.
Enjoyed your video and I subscribed. I have one problem, I'm working on a 2002 S60 non-turbo, but the heads look identical. You mentioned in your video that you had to wait for the lifters to pump up with oil, but mine doesn't have lifters have lifters. I was hoping to get some info on how to adjust the clearance with the head off. I guess I'll have to install the cover and remove the Torx plugs.
Well done, have you thought of teaching classes on how to do this? I don't think I speak for myself, as a hobbyist, that I'd be willing to pay you for your time to show me (if you were within the Bay Area) on how to do so.
Thank you so much for the great video. I never knew the that the piece under the spring was a shim. I am rebuilding a 2000 v70xc with solid lifters and wondering how to check if valves are in spec. Do you happen to know the specs. I understand there are inspection ports in the cam cover but do not know the procedure and cant seem to find it. Any help would be much appreciated.thanks kat
did you ever find an answer??? I took off both gears and the moved both cams all over the place and removed from the head. S70 turbo.... I am trying to find out the correct lining for the gear on the cam itself. The intake gear has a mark on the inside, but nothing is on the other one. MAYBE IT DOES NOT MATTER??? MAYBE?
I would like share my experience 40 years working on cars. easier it is lap valves with electric low speed drill . between drill and valve connect small flexible rubber hose. and between valve and cyl. head put small soft spring so you don't needs tap valve. I used old drill with right and rivers left turning speed. after grinding around 10 minutes I clean valve from grounding paste and clean valve seat. next I take normal pencil and make lines around on valve seat, and put it in valve and turn valve by hand one direction two or three turns. remove valve and check if the lines it is erase if not so needs more grind or lap the valve. other simple check valve if needs lap. if you have cyl. head from recycling yard .put cyl. head on bench up side down and put little gasoline above valves. wait around 10 min. and see if gasoline leaking from intake or exhaust whole .good lock .
I used this technique on my 302 Cleveland about 20 years ago! Worked so well that when we fiinished the assembly, the vehicle started on the first kick of the starter and scared the crap out of me! I honestly didn't expect it to work first time...
Hey I realized this is a 10yr old video but I’m replacing the same head Volvo s40 2.4 I got it resurfaced but machine shop said I have a couple valves leaking but cost $600 some people said to just put new seals in and lap new valves. Is this ok?
Thank you Sir. If you lived closer you would be more than welcome to do one for me... another head job scheduled next week, not sure the extent yet however there's enough to go around here lol seems like most shops turn these jobs away nowadays or give outrages estimates. then they somehow find there way to me... mostly the time consumers cant complain though its work. i will look into that light thank you
