    Anearobic sealent is realy something that you need to use...vith silicon you risk to block oil passeges and that could result vith catastrophic engine faliure.

      Amazing stuff. It'll sit out in the open forever without setting, but pinch it against a metal surface with no air around, and it sets up. I assume any that squeezes out into oil or water passageways just gets washed away.

    nice gadgets and everything... i've done head gaskets before using the same gasket and bolts and torquing the head bolts without a torque wrench and have the car run for years just fine....

    I am thinking about buying a 2002 v70 2.4 that has a bad head gasket. Your video series is the best on TH-cam, so much I will check the v70 out and maybe buy it, if it is not in bad condition otherwise.

    Thank you, they work just fine i love the swivel headed ratchet and as you can see i put them through the test as well, like you mentioned as long as they can do the job, expensive, cheap or fabricated at the end of the day if you don't have a busted knuckle its a good one, yea sorry for slacking on that one i didn't forget, fist chance i will do that for you

    Good work but you should use Volvo anaerobic sealant, applied with a small paint roller. The OEM chemical gasket dries when air is not present, eliminating worries about drying time and potentially blocking passages. Applied correctly, it will essentially last forever.

      Not a requirement. Most oil resistant sealants given the required 24hrs curing time will seal perfectly. JB Weld even makes a "black" RTV that cures in an hour. It will be cured before the car is even ready to fire. Cheers. I have 2 head gaskets on these cars. My 850 and S70. Did it a little differently since I applied my knowledge with turbo Mitsus when I did them.

      diambo4life stop spreading what you used on your crappy Mitsubishis, doubt you worked on 4G63 or something among those lines, this is a Volvo engine and they are delicate and very specific, you simply don't use any other kind of sealant but the Volvo or permatex anaerobic sealants, doing with any other kind is cutting corners, the same sealant is used on the oil pan, unlike other brands that they actually use a rubber or paper gasket, this shows how much Volvo trusts the thing

    I'm finishing this job now for a customer. I've done it a little differently than you when it came to reinstalling the valve cover/cam retainer. I removed both camshaft sprockets so I can install both cam seals once the cover is on. Without sprockets lining the cams up could be confusing so I marked the back where the tool goes so I know when they are oriented the right way.
    I sit the cams on the head first, lay the valve cover on top of the head, thread on the tools, and press the cover down slowly and evenly. I install my cam seals, my cam sprockets (initially), then turn the cams to line up my marks to install the second tool before installing the belt. If the cam sprocket marks don't line up, it means I have the sprockets wrong so I loosen and adjust them.
    I believe on this engine the marks on the sprockets are only good if the sprockets have never been removed. The exhaust side sprocket free spins when the bolt is loosened so it takes a keen eye to get the mark back perfect. If you don't it really doesn't matter since the cams are locked in time anyways with the tool. You simply remark the sprocket for the next tech should it be someone other than yourself. Or am I missing something?

    Right on man, Pittsburgh tools! I have everything under the sun as far as tools go, but you prove what I try to tell everyone " a real pro buys not the most expensive tools, but all the tools he needs to do his job correctly. I jumped on my pittsburgh 1/2 ratchet to break a bolt loose on a forklift, I weigh 200 plus and that thing didn't break, best 12 bucks I ever spent. Btw when are you gonna do the tool box vid you promised; I would do one of mine, but I scribed my license on all of them.

    Hello, its a matter of preference, i don't use it on every job to be honest mostly when i see some surface imperfections it gives me a little more confidence, there is a ton of mixed reviews out there. however i cant say it ever gave me a problem if anything im sure it has helped. i used it on all types of head and flange gaskets, not saying its the correct thing to do just my experience

  • @jaymur001

    Just a heads up... having any additional material (ie copper) will NOT make heat transfer better between two surfaces. Increasing surface area however... that's different, and will indeed increase transfer (think thermal paste for heat sinks in computers).

    At 12:30 to 13:00. Why do I have to lock the cams? If they move, a guess it is possible to turn them back in position by checking the straight line at the back of them is aligned to the line given by the cam cover?
    What is it that I don't understand?

    If keeping cams locked and in place is so important, why do you have them sitting on the table? Now realize this is just a question. Is it because volvo is timed by the 3 marks ? Cam cam and shaft? Im getting ready to change head gasket and need all the info i can get. Thank you.

    Timeless have nothing to something. I watched all three videos and I never heard you say where you found the cause for the leak other than the head bolt evolved with milky residue on it? Start of Jared video just shows you putting the head back on. Did you definitively identify the exact source of the leak? Please let me know because I've got white smoke blowing from my exhaust.

    Great videos. I have a 98 V70 about 200k miles. No oil consumption but cup of coolant per week (looks like in exhaust, with white smoke out dipstick, no milk in oil). compression 175 all around, but 12% leak down on cylinder 5 (all others 1%). I think head is warped. Car is in beautiful shape besides. Worth the $1500 to shave head?

    • @johnferguson7235
      @johnferguson7235 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ken Dash I would suspect the radiator leaking along the seams since the leak down test is showing 12% while the compression test is so good it is likely the piston rings which are a little worn. The valves might be leaking a little and they need to be lapped. The PCV system should be removing all the vapor from the crankcase so your PCV system needs cleaning.

    At 17:00 he taps the cam oil seal too far. There is a bevel/champfer edge on the aluminum surrounding the cam seal. Tap just until the seal is even with the champfer, don't pound it all the way in until it stops, that's actually too far and more likely to leak. I have owned 3 of this type engine.

      You can vet the whole cylinder head service kit with all the special tools from AliExpress and probably other Chinese vendors for about $60 shipped. I would recommend being a lot more careful when disassembling. Take your time and go slow. I’ve heard the cam cover can crack easily with uneven pressure although I’ve never had a problem.

      You should really have a cylinder head shop grind all the valve stems after lapping the seats to get the length exact. Most will be a few thousandths too long after the seats are ground, and will not seal the cylinder 100% perfectly. This is also the reason to keep the lifters in order after lapping/valve stem grinding so they are matched with the valve stem they will be moving. Aluminum Cylinder Heads in Portland OR do an awesome job of this.

    • @xjstevie
      @xjstevie 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tcptcp20072007 I know this is a year ago BUT you are partly right but actually wrong... The Volvo has solid lifters which can be set and are not hydraulic which self adjust so when lapping you are changing your valve clearance iow you have to have the valve shafts ground down to correct that "tappet clearance"... And yes the valves will seal

    Always check clearance on the mating serface of heads and block - bingo - head gasket... it's not rocket science.

  • @SL9SH
    @SL9SH 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are not supposed to use any kind of silicone, or any other kind of but anaerobic sealant wether it is the Volvo or the permatex one, using any kind of silicone will result in leaks, probably VVT failure and poor lubrication as those small oil passages get clogged very easily, you should erase that part of your video, that is terribly wrong, it is like using a scotch brite pad on the engine or something of that kind
