  • That's why the length of the cut is longer than the height of the fin.

    I can only imagine how big the forces involved must be.

      It's always crazy to see massive forces being harnessed in an extremely controlled fashion like this. The machine is so sturdy and the blade so massive and hard compared to the copper/aluminum being skived, and the medium material is secured so well, that it just looks like... a knife through butter.

      Besides the solid engineering that went into designing machines like this, we must also appreciate the special properties of these metals that make it all possible in the first place. One cannot do this kind of processing with brittle materials.

    • @darysparta9676
      @darysparta9676 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you can calculate it actually, it's very simple. It's about the shear strength of whatever material is being skived, somehow multiplied by the area of the contact surface (length of blade × the thickness). I say "somehow" because there may be constants involved in the multiplication, search the formula of it for yourself. nice bit of physics :)

    I'm curious what the grain structure looks like after that reorganization.
    How would the operation change if you added a compression roller on the top edge of the cutting tool to flatten that negative curvature?
    Would cryogenic heat treatment increase the thermal conductivity afterwards?

    • @skiving2020
      @skiving2020  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a difficult question to answer, but an important question.
      Basically, when cutting skiving, we try to make the fin as natural as possible. Therefore, it can be expected that another deformation occurs when a pressure roll is added. It is an empirical opinion to make the material as soft as possible, and to make the blade hard when cutting soft.

    • @jonathanshaw8868
      @jonathanshaw8868 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cutting does not effect grain structure, no more than cutting a wooden board changes its grain. Also any heat treatment doesn't change thermal conductivity. Heat treatment is used in altering the grain size and type for mechanical properties such as hardness, toughness ect

    • @zacharybennett3249
      @zacharybennett3249 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jonathanshaw8868 I care to disagree. Cutting with a saw wouldn't alter grain structure (aside from the localized area of the cut), but you can clearly see the deformations occurring under the immense pressure applied during the skiving process.
      Also: Thermal conductivity is certainly effected by grain structure; the effect is most notable between cast and forged metals.

    • @jonathanshaw8868
      @jonathanshaw8868 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zacharybennett3249 you are confused, let me be clear, you can alter the grain type that a metal has by heat or cold, this effects things like hardness. You cannot however change the grain structure without forging process. Also the surface deformation you can see with the naked eye has more to do with the way aluminum does something referred to as work hardening. Finally there is no difference in thermal conductivity relating to cast vs forged vs machined. The difference in the performance of the final product has to do with the surface area that is achieved. Also this may be a misconception due to the alloy materials used in forged, rolled ect materials. Example cast iron thermal efficiency sucks, loose a little carbon add some nickel and chromium and you have stainless steel, the total material composition of the alloying elements are less than 3%, but the thermal efficiency may increase by as much as 30%.

    • @der8auer
      @der8auer 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jonathanshaw8868 zacherybennett3249 is actually right. The skiving process indeed changes the grain scturcture to much smaller grain size which significantly decreases thermal conductivity. Same as it decreases electrical conductivity.

    So when the comments say, “must be compression”. ? Does that mean something like, as the aluminum gets cut and forced up onto the skivblade, there is compression happening?

    What is the purpose of skiving.

    • @skiving2020
      @skiving2020  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is usually used for the purpose of heat dissipation. And the skiving method creates an amazing heatsink by maximizing the surface area without loss of processing such as chips by integrating the structure with the material.
