That video you have probably seen at least once. Mountain Biker Falls Off Cliff - Remastered 4K

- Odds are you have seen this crash before. It happened New Years Day of 2004 when a group of us were riding the San Diego Arizona Railway in Carrizo Gorge some 70 miles east of San Diego. When I first published this on my own website, it went viral and blew my site up. FYI, TH-cam was not founded until 2005. Since then it has been a quite a few TV and cable shows and reposted numerous places. Here is that video tweaked a bit for modern viewing.

With friends like that, who needs enemies?
Huh? What were they meant to do?
@@justinwatson6932 Someone should climb down while another calls for ambulance...
Your choice: Stand there and smile while askin Did you film it?
@@666Flake it is extremely risky to climb down there, resulting in another person falling down that same cliff, so only the ambulance part. Not sure how the medics would get there quickly though. It would probably need some sort of specialized help, like search and rescue maybe. And plus, look at how far Miles fell, it would take forever to safely get down to him without proper climbing gear. The title says cliff for a reason, its not just a really steep hill, its a wall of jagged rock. There is nothing a person could do except call for help in a situation like that. Also, if you'd read the article that was put in the description of the video, they actually did try to climb down, but they kept on dislodging rocks and made it even more dangerous for Miles, who was already climbing back up.

Dude is apprehensive..."you aren't gonna try it?" Coaxed into it by bill who reaps the reward by posting the dramatic footage. Hope Miles learned more than one lesson after that fall.
Exactly.
"did you film it?" is a perfectly reasonable question, given the circumstances.
That has been my defense all along.
The comment before Miles made his attempt was a classic." Look at the penalty for failure dude''.
I am happy to say that phrase made it way into some of the US Army's training (At least for some period of time) on Operational Risk Management.
Weirdly I've been a mountain biker since the 90's and never seen this vid. The geo and suspension on XC bikes of that era SUUUUCKED for tech. Very happy to see Miles made it out with surprisingly minor injuries for a fall like that!
Also the classic MTB "You ok?" No bro, I just fell off a cliff! :D
That totally would'nt of happened if the bike had an auto e-hydro dropper post, extreme modern geo, at least 250mm of travel, ABS dual 300mm rotors bi-quad monoblock calipers, 80mm cranks for clearance, 36er wheels with tripleinserts, gps, an electric no pedal assist boost motor and handlebars with steering assist!
@@kzoomin Hyperbole aside, he'd have rolled through that with any modern trail bike, lol!
@@bigslacker666 Um, no. It’s nice to think that, but good riders on current “progressive” geo bikes still walk that section. My problem wasn’t old-school bike tech. No, my problem was that I checked up when I first saw the fresh trail damage. If I’d just plowed ahead at speed my momentum would have carried me through.
@@stolenc7 Yah, commit or eat shit is true on any bike. But it's way easier to commit with your butt sitting on the seat collar, a 64 degree HTA and 50" wheelbase than on an old school OTB machine. As a DHer that rides black/double black all season I can't see anything other than capability=confidence, but maybe my view is skewed. Still super happy you came out of that relatively well, could have been so much worse!
I've been riding since the 90's as well. Sure, compared to now the tech was crap, but people made due because that's what they knew( I still think V-brakes were really good, and old Marzocchi forks were bomb proof) . I destroyed every frame for years....cranks, wheels, etc., then stuff got stronger, but people were riding crazy stuff then as they are now. Think of Hans Rey, as one example. I was on a super sketchy trail on my 160 travel "super" bike in New Zealand....(big rocks, super narrow with a huge drop like the one in this video, but much steeper), then up comes a dude on a cyclocross bike making it all look a sidewalk. It's the rider not the bike. And not saying that guy couldn't ride a bike.....I would've been freaked on that section(I hate heights with trails like that!). He slowed too much, got hung up and ate it. Could happen to anyone on any current bike
"Did you film it" - Yesssss 😂😂😂😂
Both Eric and I have gotten a bit of shit for that bit of commentary over the years.
@@mountainbikebill Rightly so.
@@mountainbikebill i mean you should have asked if his bike was ok...
Priorities
Evidence that you didn’t push him
😁
Sounds cold for sure
But it’s in the moment
You didn’t push him
Falling is a common risk of mountain biking
And it’s not like you were going to catch him🤷♂️
the dialog here is priceless. i hope mile bought a lotto ticket that day because he was stacked with good luck
Yeah, pretty sure he cashed in some good points that day.
This never gets old.
those bikes are old though!!
What a friend he is after a huge fall ~ are you alright? Did you film that ?
These were ancient times.
Then friendship manifested itself in this way
Miles fell for miles...
After watching their buddy fall down the cliff they say "are you allright?" Yeah, let me try that again.
I was riding some Las Vegas desert trails come around a corner and to my eye looks like a rattlesnake on the trail got fixated and went off trail luckily just about 6 feet drop and some scraped up legs but if I would of rolled down I would of hit a few prickly cactus plants just waiting to tag me all up. The rattlesnake was a scraggly twisted up branch.
I reminded you of this video recently. Maybe now you will get that Viral response you deserve as the original author!
I think it would be really hard to replicate the 2004 viral performance. My website got something like 1.4 million hits in about a day.
"Are you alright" ?? TF do you think ????
It's an antique but I used the "penalty for failure" phrase only a week or 2 ago 😃 Legendary....
Just heard it. Like it.
Are u alright? He just fell down a cliff! What do u think?
You gotta have film or cops might not believe you didn’t “push” him down
The cameraman understood the assignment
His "friends" talked him into that
You alright?
at :44 poor Miles declares (as he's heading downhill) "fuck me".
When I was remastering the footage I tried to clean up the audio to make that a bit clearer.
It seemed appropriate at the time.
"Stay there until you know everything is connected " 😂
LOL, for a second I thought you were referring to quantum entanglement. Other than these guys, yes, everything in the universe actually is connected.
Honestly, these guys are completely incompetent and don’t belong on such trails….
yes, but how's the bike?
You can't ride "scared" in a setting like that. You are giving yourself zero chance.
How old are those bikes!
Thank god they were wearing skin tight cycling apparel .. could have been much worse otherwise
Probably earned a wildcard to compete at Red Bull Rampage after that one!
no matter how good or how poor you are in mtn biking. elbow/forearm protector, knee/shin protector will save the skin, bones, joints. unfortunately, most bikers don't use it because it affects the cool looking image of the biker.
Bounces all the way down a cliff and you say are you alright? You got to be a stunt man to survive that without injuries.
That question is just to see if your gonna get a response :-)
Relax miles we’re not in a hurry so you might as well relax too.
If only Miles had offered to be the camera man. Those guys are invincible & sometimes just know better.
Did you filmm it good shit good shit
Some MT Saint Helens sheer cliffs is death, It's been over a decade and my butt still puckers after thinking about them.
did you film it? guy in video says nonchalant. lol!!!
Uh-oh, that’s gonna leave a mark!
I seem to remember Miles was okay thanks to all the jagged rocks breaking his fall. He managed to get back on his bike after the fall and cycle back home to internet fame, albeit with a wonky handlebar.
“You alright?”
-Every Bro (you know it’s true)
"There's no penalty for failure" ... lol omg
Damn that was gnarly!
This was on New Years Day? You didn’t even shout Happy New Year to him 😮
So you’re the guy, who fell? Or was that your friend?
Either way, glad y’all are okay.
Please just…. Be careful man.
I was camera man, with an old skool helmet cam.
Did you film it?
We can tempt fate only so many times...
He said "you alright" hahahahaha
Famous last words....look at the penalty for failure.
Stay there till you know everything’s connected! Ouch!!!
Walk today, ride tomorrow.
'Hold my beer".
Burp!
Peer pressure at its finest. Make sure your buddy shares his TH-cam profit off your shortcoming.
They are not your friends Miles
Darwin-award potential winners here !
Guy rolling down the hill "Ohh... Oh.. Fuck me!" HAAAAAAA!!!!
They showed this video at my first aid training lol 😂 Hope the dude okay tho
He was rolling for miles.
Is the bike ok?
Always a solid question
Hell, Ive seen worse.
"did ya film it?" "yeah" ... I guess his friends have too ! 😂
Can't believe he's doing that kind of riding on THAT BIKE lol. Hope he's ok
Are you alright😂 yeah like hes ok after that fall
You film it??? Gold
I wonder how much shit Eric has taken over the years for that comment.
Fuck around, find out level 8
lol
he's asking " are you alright " ? what a fucking question to ask..
What should he ask in that situation?
So wtf should he have asked him according to you? Do you have the time? Would you like some coffee and cake? Is your sister still a virgin? smh tell us
My first thought when I crashed into a tree with my bike was to review the video.
I don’t record anything 🤦🏻
I’ve watched way too many videos.
Wow , what has happened to people ? they are more concerned about getting a dramatic video to upload on social media than the health of their friend . Pathetic
main character syndrome gone wrong
He's blessed tho if it was a cliff ledge nowhere to roll that drop would of been the end
ROTF LMFAO. Sorry. It's too funny.
Thank goodness the bike was ok 🤭
Are you all right? You mean where does it hurt? 🤕
Thatbisba question where any answer is a good one under the circumstances.
Did you film it? At least it made good TH-cam content.
This was pre-TH-cam days. It still managed to go viral the old fashioned way. Email and forum websites.
I've got a mountain bike. I wondered why they call them mountain bikes. You really supposed to go fall off the side of a mountain?
That was not on the itenary:-)
IS BRO OK💀
Yes.
'Where's my bike?'
I have to say, I was super grateful my bike stayed up on the trail. The last thing I needed was metal object beating on me on the way dawn. Also, it was a ten mile ride back to the cars, and hauling a bike back up that cliff would have been very tough. On a related note, I still ride that bike regularly.
Yeah, that would have been more suckier.
@@stolenc7 O.M.G.
That's not a cliff
Hello! I seem to have fallen down a cliff and still alive. But, I'm very badly injured. I think my legs might be broken but I'll try to stand up (crack). Yes they broken. Perhaps you could toss me a bandage or some antibacterial cream ...
Tis but a flesh wound!
It smells like almonds...and that is not good.
shake it off!
Tis but a scratch!
I did- I climbed back up and rode ten miles back to the vehicles. A month and a half later Bill, Eric (the guy who asked if Bill was filming) and I, along with another friend, raced the 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo and did pretty well.

or if they had any skill whatsoever. yes, dropper posts help a lot.
No offense, but what a bunch of more ons.
Totally extreme!!!😂
Real life x loony tunes, sorry but I just have to laugh at this ridiculous fail. Hope he was alright, he has scars and a great story to tell for the rest of his life . " I'm the dude that fell off the cliff mountain biking, do you want to see the clip?"
God gave him a chance to escape but he choose to do it again. Morale of the story is sometime its better to quite rather than pushing yourself.
Get new friends!!
Those bikes are not built for that terrain
This was in 2004 when it was all they had
