Ian, you are a pioneer, a man of foresight, gut, griut.. besides a revered captain. You opened the gate to all future professional criketers and they owe you immensely. Bless you. You are a man of a generation and century in criket.
@@denaliwarnakula7684 Ian was in the comnentating box and vehemently disagreed with the ball being bowled underarm. It's not too hard to understand for anyone with an IQ above 80
Shocking that I read the groundsman of western Australia earned more than Dennis Lillee in a cricket season. Aussie cricketers were really shafted at the time.
Chappell is absolutely superb to listen to, sounds like the ACB shit on their cricket team back in the day from a great height, even back then with the attendances they were getting & the fact they'd just done a broadcasting deal there must have been profits recorded, surely to god!!-England 🏴 fan
Blown away seeing this. I wish every country had similar films about progression og cricket in every decade. Its too late now most of the players who played in 60's are no more and the bunch of 70's is also getting lesser.
The last few seconds are fascinating when Greg said that he paced out the distance from the stumps to the slips when Thommo was bowling, over 30 metres! Incredible.
The segment at 1:03:15, which was deleted in some edits of this documentary, was probably one of the most compelling parts. The interviews with Tony Greig about Boycott and with John Snow explaining why both didn't go on the 1974/75 tour of Australia under Denness explained many things.
@@nyosito I didn't know that about 1975, but it sure reinforces the point. Just to be clear, I don't believe for a moment that Boycott was scared of getting physically hurt, I am sure that what he was actually scared of was sustaining damage to his reputation as a leading test batsman.
I love you touching upon oh you didn’t play cricket. Actually any of us who played French cricket or Street cricket or park cricket with who ever was about own cricket. Everbody else is a trustee.
What I cannot work out is why didn't ABC (Australia) ask for the Colour footage from 1972 from the BBC (UK), as there would have been arrangements for ABC archive. It also shows that it was not just Australian players who were unhappy with that were paid, it was players from all round the world. There is footage from Sportsmight with Coleman (BBC) in 1968 that England players were unhappy with the pay for what turned out to be the cancelled tour. It also makes me wonder why the ACB in 1971-72 ask India to either tour for Five Tests or rescheule to have both New Zealand and India play three tests each to have dual tours as England had been doing this since 1965.
@@sugarnads I know that, but I am sure that the BBC would have been happy to pass on the colour footage if they could have shown it on BBC2 or BBC4 here in the UK a year so after its orignal broadcast on ABC.
According to Chappell, when asked about his career, Bradman said sometime in the 80s, “I managed to do it all without getting my hair permed or getting divorced.” As Ian puts it, “I thought, ‘Bugger you, mate. It’s personal now.’ And from then on, if I was asked a direct question about Bradman, I would say exactly what I had experienced. “
I think if you've got the highest average, you're just waiting. He's era went with him and Australia hasn't looked back. Except for recognising he still has the highest international average.
That final test in 1972 series was the last time an Oval Ashes test was won by the side batting second - I was in my mother's womb at the time. And yet, Paine, and then Cummins stupidly gave up the chance to bat first when they won the toss in 2019 and 2023 respectively.
Something happened to him on the tour to West Indies in 1973, either an injury or an illness and he was never the same. He basically retired soon after.
Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes opening for Windies. Put on 200. England gets one of them out, we celebrate like never before. Viv Richards walks in...bugger.
At least South Africa thankfully never came to Australia as the Rugby Tour in 1971 could have been a blueprint of the protests. Bradman saved the Police and Services keeping busy.
Bradman was too old skool and stuck in his ways. In hs mind cricketers deserved the same crap pay he got. Jealousy and an inability to let the players move forward.
Well done showing the Indian mentality off complaining about anything they can. Are u sad your country has 1.4 billion more people than Australia and are still shit. 😂😂😂

Gold? This documentary was worth a lot more. Great memories.
The Chappell era was the best time of cricket. Thanks for bringing back the memories.
Greg was a truly great player. Ian was mediocre. Slow batter, boring captain.More myth than fact - Lillee was more a factor in the 70's

He is the pioneer of under-armed balling as well
You do mean Ian Botham of course !!!!

Awesome. This has been unavailable for ages.
Chappelli is in his element here

01:23:33 'Patrons were limited to 24 cans per person' 😂
That was just the beer. 🙂 There were some seriously pissed people at the end of the day in some of those matches.
Maybe the most Aussie thing ever
This is bloody brilliant. Great upload, cheers!
Wonderful documentary. Its sad to see 'though how many of these former players are no longer with us
Very true mate. I loved Gary Sobers.... THE greatest cricket player ever, in my humble opinion.

Pretty much the best 55 players were there.

John Snow. Highly intelligent, very insightful, beautifully coordinated action and very sharp pace. A real sporting hero.

Some of the deliveries that Thommo bowled were well over 100mph. Even behind his arm, the ball was a blur.

WSC was the kick in the bum the game needed.
They just needed Chappell to tell us what he really thought about Bradman.
An arrogant tightarse?
According to Chappell, when asked about his career, Bradman said sometime in the 80s, “I managed to do it all without getting my hair permed or getting divorced.”

Bradman was a master of the bat, but a complete failure as an administrator.
Thats why we were fairly dominant until the end of the 70s
Let’s hope he gets better soon.
1.50.10 Botham was right about Chappell. “If you give it out you’ve got to be prepared to take it back and you’re problem is you can’t”..
You can see Ian Chappell hated Bradman. He never referred to him as "Sir Donald"...just "Bradman"
Bradman was a phenomenal batsman, as an administrator, not so good. Ian is right, Bradman was as responsible for WSC as anyone.
Shouldn’t call people sir anyway. It’s super weird
Chappell hated everyone except himself..and maybe Greg, but I think he hates him too😂😂😂
@@jayannan9897 I love agreeing with him and also hating him
Typical - Ian Chappell lacked tact and class. Neil Harvey summed up WSC best and he knew Bradman personally.
