  • In this video we'll watch Mozart's Most METAL Piece....which is "Lacrimosa"....part of his lager Requiem. The chords in this work of art are perfect examples of the classical style. Diminished 7th chords, secondary dominants, neapolitan and more. Who's going to make a metal version? So grab your axe and let's do this muhahaha

      It was a commission for Count Franz von Walsegg, meant to be played at a requiem mass on the anniversary of the Count's wife's death. It's speculated that Walsegg was planning to pass the Requiem off as his own composition because he is known to have done that in the past, this was frustrated by Constanze Mozart, who probably invented the story of the mysterious messenger and Mozart's belief that he was composing the requiem for his own funeral as a way to keep Walsegg from doing exactly that- as Mozart had not left her much money behind at his death, reflected with his modest funeral (though it was far from the 'pauper's burial' that's been enshrined in pop culture).
      Maria Constanze deserves some props for sticking it to the man who wanted to profit from her husband's death- truly a metal lady.

    1:06 - Look at the use of major 2nd and _especially_ minor 2nd dissonances right there in the first measure. First you have a C# appoggiatura against a D, then you have a Bb escape tone against an A, then a D appoggiatura against an E, and then a C natural appoggiatura against a C# (!!!) It is purposefully dissonant, and yet completely subtle.

    Beethoven's late string quartets is about as metal as you are going to get. Try the first movement of the 12th with the Emerson String Quartet and then, go to the Grosse Fugue. It doesn't get any more metal than his Opus 133. Then, try Shostakovich's String Quartet #8 (2nd movement) and then his symphony #10 (2nd movement with Petrenko). Then give Bruckner's 3rd chance. I could go on.

    Fuck yeah! I knew it was going to be from the Requiem mass. And... while Lacrimosa is beautiful, dramatic, and one of my all time favorite pieces of classical music, I would say the most "metal" movement is the one before the Lacrimosa, which is "Movement VII. Confutatis". The Confutatis movement is BADASS and starts with that sick chorus rhythm I bet any student of James Hetfield could arrange for rhythm guitar... It would fit perfectly in the middle of any Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, or Amon Amarth solo bridge. Its just one of the most badass pieces of classical music ever composed. Im actually surprised Yngwie never incorporated it into a song, as he did so much with Beethoven's works.
    However... minor disagreement aside, Cheers to you man! Great content and fantastic analysis and breakdown... Bringing attention to this amazing music and the sick ass chord changes is important as hell. Kids should study the work of the masters because it WILL make them better writers and players. Knowing how to modulate chords like the masters of music (let's be honest, no one this side of 1950 is worthy to carry Mozarts jock strap...with a few scant exceptions) will help you write and compose and I thank my early teachers for dragging me (often kicking and screaming) to symphony performances and for introducing me to these works. Mozart, Bach, CPE Bach, Beethoven, Handel, etc... This shit is so important to understand if you intend on writing melodic death, neoclassical, even power and folk metal.

    have you done Mozart's 41st symphony 4th movement? if not, i believe 1-2 minutes before the end, he reached an apex by having 5 diffrent counterpoints/melodies or whatever all come together for a few bars and making it work. it is something amazing.
    also, for something dark, the commandatore scene from don Giovani
    the first movement of his 20th piano concerto , which by the way, was written in honor of his father coming to visit him in vienna.

    This is nitpicky but I figured I would mention it. The umlaut in Süssmayr is pronounced "soos" or like Suess. Umlaut vowels, in order of a-o-u are pronounced "ah," "oh," "oo." That's my $0.02 on the topic. Love your work friend.

    Great analysis. I’d like to hear your thoughts on the 40th Symphony in G minor. You could also tie it back to his Symphony 25 aka the little g minor symphony written in his late teens. I guess the classical period (not classical music) was mostly in major keys. But he always had minor keys in his back pocket

Mozart, Liszt, Wagner, Chopin, Carl Orff, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Strauss. to keep things honest in life...with a bit of bluegrass in the mix.

    true, this was pretty much the last notes he ever wrote. on his own. have you ever seen amadeus, this was the last song they played in the movie, well techinally there was a part of a piano conceto at the end, but at the end of his life anyway. mozart was amazing. makes me wonder what the entire mass would sond lke instead of about half of it if he had done it all himself.
    although he did lay the outline for sussymayr and/or whoever else tried to finish it. as i bleieve there are 2 or 3 diffrent versions.
    it is like he wrote the requiem for himself

    I would say metal is about idiom not heaviness. Lot of alt rock is pretty heavy. In terms of “style”, Symphony in G minor is pretty metal. It has fast string runs, arpeggios, etc.

    Hey I just wanna suggest something, because I talked about this with my buddy the song ''ONLY'' from Nicki Minaj has very evil sounding melody / riff on the keyboard.. To me it sounds more evil than the tritone, or more haunting I'd love to see your view on this particular riff only, Only from Nicki Minaj.. Thanks man.

    • @lopolik
      @lopolik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bossman-jk9tl yeah that goes on for most of the song, so it is really evil sounding. Yeah you described it well. It is really a great haunting evil melody, I love it. This whole album from her is very dark as opposed to her first 2 have more of a happy vibe. this whole album was dark, and very personal and like Anaconda was the only song that was like fun and silly, all the other songs were DARK and really like sad, etc. So it's odd that Anaconda was on that album. lol

      She has a lot of dark production that I tried transposing on guitar and it's so metal LMAO.....my favorite beat from her is "Come On A Cone", however "Did It On 'Em", "LLC", have extremely, atonal and super tritone production. Minaj has great taste in diminished tonalities, which is unique as Rap is strictly minor based most of the time.

    • @murk4552
      @murk4552 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lopolik well it was a personal album and ai enjoyed it for that reason. "Anaconda" was just self depreciating humor. I hate "Buy A Heart" though, so out of place. Pink Friday doesn't have a lot of positive vibes either save the opening track, "Check It Out", "Fly" and "Last Chance" closer.

      @@murk4552 Wow, I am glad I found someone who also knows Nicki Minaj songs! She is actually awesome, my favorite is the first two albums Pink Friday, and Roman Reloaded (Re-Up.) yeah Did it on em, Come in a Cone is awesome.. oh LLC is very dark as well, also the rapping on LLC is one of her fastest (if not the fastest, at some parts.)

    When Don Giovani is taken down to the underworld by Il Comendatore... is to me the heavymetaliest piece of Mozart's repertoire. Don't know if it's because of the dramatic ambience, or if the music itself makes that sense. Or even the part in Amadeus film.
