  • In this video we'll watch a live performance of Vivaldi's "Summer", Presto movement. It may be the most metal violin piece ever composed. It's been covered by Alexi Laiho and many other metalheads. I'll be talking about the music theory used in the song as well. Things like the scales, chords and keys. So grab you axe and let's do this!

I've played this myself as both solo violin and continuo and it is a really metal piece. I would say that Paganini caprices 1-24 are even more metal, as it has double, triple and quadruple stops as well as left hand pizzicato as the right hand is bowing.
I've been a violinist for 32 years, and I've NEVER managed to play it correctly!

Like the wig. And whenever you get the chance, you should listen to Mahler's 5th movement of his second symphony. A 30 minute long orchestral masterpiece about the apocalypse and what happens after. The march sections of the movement are what are metal about it.

Seriously though, glad to see homage paid where it's due. I've been playing in metal of some form or another in on my own or in bands for over 35+ years, and I've always drawn my best inspiration from all forms of classical music. It started long ago after gigs when I just wanted to hear something different on the drive home. Since, I listen to it everywhere I go and I practice to various disciplines. Not bad for a guy who is now into writing, recording, and performing progressive doom metal, among other fun things.

I remember playing this piece a long time ago. It’s a piece that every violinist plays when they get to that level. It was really fun for sure. One cool thing about this performance in particular is that they are playing on Baroque period instruments. The violinist is also using a baroque bow hold. In my opinion, there are a ton of metal violin pieces. One would be the first movement of the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole. Another one would be the the first movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Towards the end, there are some extraordinary intense passages of double stops that are metal AF.

Two works that I'd highly, HIGHLY recommend you analyze for their metal-like features:
    1) Prokofiev, Tocatta (op 11) -- amazing high-speed keyboard shredding, lots of interesting chord combinations and motion.
    2) Schubert, Der Erlkoenig (D 328) Perhaps the first gothmetal song ever composed. Interesting use of major and minor sections, also a Maiden-like galloping rhythm driving it all.
