    The singer Steve Winwood was also part of a group called Traffic in the late '60s and early '70s. Traffic was one of those unique groups that sound like no one else--a blend of rock, blues, jazz, soul, folk, and probably more genres. I recommend their long song "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys."

    This is such an incredible band. I think their album is surely among the 10 greatest rock albums of all time. Eric Clapton on guitar, Steve Winwood on vocals, organg and guitar, Ginger Baker on the drums and Rick Grech on bass. Doesn't get much better than this 😍

    Steve Winwood is an absolute one in a lifetime artist. He can play any instrument, and play it well, and he has one of the most soulful voices ever. He started at age 17 in England, where he was born. Eric Clapton is in this Band as well. Talk about 2 of the most famous Rock/Blues artists of all time, they fit the bill.

  • @b00jen81
    @b00jen81 2 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    "Home" in this song is a state of mind. He's lost in life and doesn't have anywhere that feels like home. It's not literal, it's metaphorical and an emotional expression of where he is existentially. "Wasted" is the same in this context as well. Feel the mood and the atmosphere of the song, the emotional resonance. Does it sound like it's just some random night where he may have taken a wrong turn after one too many pints at the pub - but other than that, his life is fine? Naw, not at all. That would be a far more lighthearted tune. The music, the vocals and the lyrical choices all have a more soulful (you even said so yourselves) sound and a deeper, almost mystical vibe. It all feels very heartfelt, grave and even mournful. I was kinda surprised though that y'all took the lyrics so literally, when you're usually really good at finding the more poetic, symbolic meanings in songs, as well as identifying the emotions they are speaking from. Hmm, maybe this one just didn't hit as hard for y'all as it does for me. I wasn't alive yet when it came out, but ever since I heard it for the first time, this beautiful song has always been one of the most meaningful to me.

    • @steveullrich7737
      @steveullrich7737 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Excellent comment! I agree and I think you've articulated the truer meaning of the lyrics as conveyed by Steve's haunting voice and the wonderful music. I never felt it was about drinking as you mentioned the vibe of the song doesn't at all convey someone lamenting about drinking too much (or taking to many drugs) but symbolizes a deeper emotional cry about the state of his life perhaps an existential crisis. You prove that you didn't have to be alive, like I was, when this song came out to recognize that this is such a moving, powerful and special song.

    • @b00jen81
      @b00jen81 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@steveullrich7737 Thanks, I appreciate that! I appreciate your thoughtful and insightful comment as well. Funny thing is, I've seen a few other reactors and people in the comments who focus on those particular lyrics in a literal way as well, while also missing the emotional tone of the song. It seems like this is one of those songs that people will either have a deep connection to immediately and get it or they won't. And that's okay, of course! Part of the beauty of music is the individual relationship with it. And yeah, really cool how that can transcend generations, eras and time itself :)

    • @ronhale9868
      @ronhale9868 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, excellent comment. The late '60s culture was such an experimental and creative era, which at times could be overwhelming. You had extremes like the hippie movement, the anti-war movement vs. the establishment, the man. It is like the country lost it's mooring and had to reinvent itself. And there was also a lot of stress and confusion, which led to many casualties. This song so epitomizes those lost along the way.

  • @biff9999

    I was a teenager when I first heard this (I'm old, like Methuselah), and I thought, "Well' he's high/drunk and he just wants to go home and get some sleep". Now that I'm old (see previous statement), it resonates much differently. What the writer meant hasn't changed, of course, but the way I feel when I hear it has now changed. It evokes very different emotions now that I am in my late sixties. "I'm wasted" now means my body is wasted and I'm slowly breaking down physically, and so many things that I put off doing are no longer possible, and "I can't find my way home" means I waited too long to find my spiritual home, my calm and contented place, the emotional place I was meant to be. Now, it's a beautiful but melancholy song to me.
    Age may not always bring wisdom, but it does change your perception of things.

      @elaine8013 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Wise words on perception.. Very wise. I feel the same way about the song. I was out of the country for almost 10 years and while I was away all I wanted was to come back home. Now that I'm back everything is different. People passed away, the environment isn't as green... My parents are getting older, my friends have moved on and yeah. I also can't quite find my way home again because home isn't the same. It never will be.

    • @jollyrodgers7272
      @jollyrodgers7272 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ditto on all that, also this came out not long after I had my first concussion - and this song still hits my soul deeply, reminding me of that time I couldn't recognize anything familiar and didn't know what happened - searching for 'the key' to unlock a waking nightmare, literally looking for my way home, not knowing what home looked like ... Pray we don't get full blown Alzheimer's, as I imagine it's rather like that, too.

    • @biff9999
      @biff9999 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you - all good additions to my (probably clumsy) explanation of how this song affects me now.
      Jeez, it seems like a couple of lifetimes ago these days, but I was once young and strong and a genuine world-beater. And now? Now, if I grab the wrong pillow when I go to sleep, when I wake up, I feel like I've been in a bad car accident for the next three days. Everything hurts. It's pitiful, but that's how it is. My physical being is wasting away and breaking down, and no matter how much I try to slow that process down, every year sees a little more destruction. And there is so much more I wanted to do. So much more. And I still have not found my home, the literal or figurative place where my soul is content. Still looking.
      All any of us can do is live as gracefully and as happily as possible.

    Many have speculated about the true meaning behind the lyrics of the song. Some say this Steve is singing about break-up or the meaning of life while others claim that it’s about war and death. The most well-known interpretation of the “Can’t Find My Way Home” is that it’s merely a song about drugs. I am inclined to agree. If you look carefully, “Come down off your throne and leave your body alone” might be saying “get down from that grand illusion and just stop taking drugs and doing this to your body!”. The following lines, “You are the reason I’ve been waiting all these years, somebody holds the key” can be interpreted as “drugs were the reason why I can’t move on and I need someone to help me!” The again, who really knows? It might as well be a track about self-rediscovery and trying to change your life after you made a series of bad choices. Drugs might be just one small part of it. We all make mistakes, take wrong turns and as a result, can’t find our way back home; the important thing is to be sane, realize what is wrong and try to seek help.

    • @heathermcginn1547
      @heathermcginn1547 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with the many interpretations! I always took it as the meaning of life. It’s a metaphor for stumbling home drunk. We all navigate thru life with no clue where we’re really headed. And somebody holding the key to enlightenment , the key to love, or peace or all of the above! The key to LIFE. I’ve been on drugs while seeing covers of this song by widespread panic and always interpreted “come down off your throne, leave your body alone “ as let go of the ego, and leave your body thru the third eye! Enjoy the trip, if you will…. Enjoy life. Similar to Panics own lyric “come down, if you want to , you can unhook your safety line “

    The supergroup Blind Faith (Eric Clapton, formerly from Cream, as guitarist: Steve Winwood, formerly from Traffic, as organist and singer; Ginger Baker, formerly from Cream, as drummer; and an excellent bassist/violinist) had a short U.S. tour (14 concerts or so) in July and August of 1969, and my then-17-year-old brother and my then-almost-14-year-old self were fortunate to win tickets to see Blind Faith from a radio contest held by the FM-100 rock radio station in our hometown of Memphis - the tickets were to the tour stop which was geographically "closest" to Memphis, which was the Sunday August 3, 1969 concert at Kiel Auditorium, in St. Louis. My brother and I flew up from Memphis on Delta Airlines, saw a (then-brand-new, premiering) film "2001: A Space Odyssey" in the afternoon, saw the wonderful Blind Faith concert at Kiel, that evening; however, it had some unexpectedly lengthy encores; this caused us to miss our late-night ticketed Delta return flight to Memphis. We tried to hitch-hike (as was mostly quite safe and quite customary, in those years) on the nearby I-55 expressway for a ride to the airport in St. Louis, to call our parents and ask them to wire funds for a new return-flight airline ticket; however, co-incidentally, a trucker who gave us a ride was going not to or near that airport, but was going straight through (in the wee hours of the morning of Monday the 4th) a truck stop in West Memphis, Arkansas, before heading on I-40 south to Little Rock in Arkansas; of course, from our perspectives, it was a thousand times better and cheaper to do this, than to have gone to the St. Louis airport. We could then call our parents in Memphis from the truck stop in West Memphis, and explain the situation (there were no cellphones back then which would have allowed for an earlier call), and they were so delighted that we were both still alive and well that my father (a self-employed artist) left his office and picked us both us from the truck stop in West Memphis -- with NO questions asked !!!!! GREAT Memories -- except for the worries of my parents !!!!!

    It's a song that will take you back to the 60's. The 1660's.

    One of my favorite songs. There is a killer electric version of this song on the Live from Hyde Park DVD and also on the deluxe version of the only Blind Faith studio album. This is such a great song, even live versions by Clapton without Stevie Winwood on vocals are outstanding. There is even a more current cover by former American Idol finalist Haley Reinhart with her dad on guitar on TH-cam. She also recorded it for her album "What's That Sound". Haley has rock roots since she performed with her parents rock band at a young age and now they accompany her. This is one of her favorite songs too.

    Talk about talent! Steve Winwood on vocals, Eric Clapton on guitar, Ric Grech playing the bass and the great Ginger Baker on drums...two thirds of the band Cream were in this band

    Steve Winwood is talking about Eric Clapton's worsening heroin addiction. One of the reasons Blind Faith only recorded one album is because Clapton's drug problems made him almost house-bound for 3 years. He rarely played live and went from one-off project to another.

      Layla and a solo album was recorded after this- the full-blown heroin addiction was still nearly 2 years away.

      Clapton was not doing heroin with any regularity until '70 or '71.

    Blind Faith was formed as a super group with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker of Cream, Steve Winwood of Traffic, and Rich Gretch from various groups. They were short lived, made one album, and had an abbreviated tour.

    The Title is "Blind Faith". The songs are "Presence of the Lord", "Sea of Joy", "Had to Cry Today". If there's 1 theme it's getting back to faith, though they were smart enough not to be specific. Beyond that, just another great superband risen from the ashes of Cream.
