I Think Dan's "chateau" has some US Construction in it. That's the first time I've seen those rebar bars in any of the French destruction channels I watch. & Dan acts like he's not seen them before. Maybe some things were made with concrete then faced with French/historical ways?

Hi,Dan. I agree with everyone else regarding using a funnel or buying a gas can top with the corrugated plastic filling spout. Most fuel containers in Canada and the USA include the fill spout with the jug purchase.
Regarding your lack of safety equipment; a hard hat is a good thing. It will prevent small rocks or sapling trees from giving you a bad concussion/ cut,but it won't help you with anything larger. The hard hat is only plastic after all. The MOST IMPORTANT safety items that you DON'T use are steel toed work boots ( with a rubber sole if you work in the woods) and a good quality pair of Chainsaw Pants !!!! This is super important as it only takes a split second to get a really bad cut ( that requires many, many stitches), the loss of some digits or a limb. Worse case...the loss of your life. Its all too easy to get injured while operating a chainsaw.....one small mistake or a distraction can cost you dearly. Try to keep the area that you are working/ cutting in as clear as possible too ( to prevent a misstep or slip while walking around the brush ). Be very careful working in the woods, please .

As I have found, 1. Don't dig saplings or bushes untill you've had a soaking rain. Digging is easier. Also time of year is important for these rescued plants so they will grow in. I would suggest digging typically in the fall, you won't need to water as much. Oh, if you did have a mechanical digger it would be tons easier.

Where did you learn about trees? First; if you're going to dig up saplings, make sure the soil is moist, then slice a circle around them, and then try to pry them up. Second; do NOT shake the soil off the roots, the plant needs that and it will assure its survival. Third; have the new hole prepared and ready to fill. Do not plant deeper than it was. It does not hurt to sprinkle a few granules of fertilizer in the hole, too. - signed / a retired landscaper who specialized in trees.

Just a thought about the stairs & rail...the wooden rail along the top of the balustrades would have been over the top of a metal rail (like the one you showed) which was fixed in place and the wooden rail with a groove underneath would have been fixed over the top to hide it. The fire probably burnt all the wood away. Metal balustrades can be very elegant and, again, perhaps the fire and then exposure to the weather might have eroded / damaged any shape they may have had. Definitely not an expert but I helped upgrade a Georgian townhouse in Scotland and we had to re-instate missing railings and a hand rail.

Don't blame the hard ground Dan for not getting all of the rootball! 😅
Those saplings are reasonably well established. You need to dig roughly about 30-60cm away from the base of the trunk if you're to have (any) hope in hell of getting the main taproots, otherwise it's a complete and utter waste of time, manual or mechanical digging equipment. And if at all possible, a good soaking of the ground the day before digging, would make the job demonstrably easier, aided by a REALLY good soak following replanting & for AT LEAST 12mths afterwards until re-establishment is obvious. MOST people don't have such a sad and sorry replanting success rate for trees.

My husband and I dug up and replanted over 300 Spruce trees when we bought our acreage 45 years ago. To date, they are 40-50 feet high on average. We dug up a good sized rootball, transported in 2 loads from 150km away, and immediately planted into 24” holes that had been prepped with water, fertilizer, and soil. They were babied with water and fertilizer for a full 2 years. It is not easy to grow healthy trees in cold climates, but that was how we had 100% success rate with ours. Wishing you the best of luck with your chateau grounds as well. Much better climate for growing!👍🏻🌲🌴🌳

You might find loosening the soil around a sapling with a fork as much as you can and then digging around with a spade could increase your success rate with sapling replants. It depends on the type of tree what root structure they'll have - if there's one dominant root and you snap it I think it will be a lower success rate but with some saplings the roots may divide and many young off-shoots could be enough. Put a cost on your time per successful replant and decide if you think it's worth the effort - it might be better to buy or keep some of those that are younger and easier to replant. I don't think many people do this because it ends up being nowhere near as worthwhile as you'd first think.

That's usually the best plan. But. Dan is defining the boundary in this case. Clearing needs to be done in order to do the major work. As he said, the saplings are free. The bonus being they don't even need to be brought onsite. If they can fill the gaps along the boundary, even as a temporary measure, that's a good use of resources. It's not like he's making a rose garden by the lawn.

Given the sheer scale of the eventual renovations of the grounds, I'd have dug up and replanted any saplings I could find too. But I must have better luck than Dan because I'm a terrible triffid Womble. Rough land near housing are my favourite hunting grounds and I combine a lovely walk with a nice Womble for new garden plants. Best haul was roughly worth ~£200 & was so heavy I could (barely) stop-start stagger to the bus stop to pay the £1•85 fare home - & that included a VERY nice terracotta pot in perfect condition.
People who are either, illogical, dumb, or simply have more money than sense, regularly dump their unwanted garden plants in these areas instead of simply sticking them in the Council's canvas provided bag for the purpose, taking a short walk to the front gate - and leaving it there to be collected for composting.
Still, their idiocy is my gain and I'm laughing all the way home. I generally get a 98/99% replanting success rate.

I just wanted to mention those metal rods that were from the balestrade may have actually been the core of a spindle. I've seen old staircases where they put a metal rod inside of a very thin spindle to give it strength in case someone fell and put their entire weight on it.
If the spindles had a metal core/rod the beautiful outside of the spindle would have burnt in the fire with the varnish or wax coating on the wood helping to fuel the fire.

I'd burn all that old growth out, leave everything where it's sitting unless it's old tires or pressurized tanks like old propane tanks. Get a handful of old metal sheeting and toss on the ground flat to give yourself a fire break. Get a heavy landscape rake with solid tines and if it starts to get away from you, just rake like crazy and it'll kill the flame from spreading. Do small enough areas that you can easily keep under control, don't do it on windy days and the ash will fertilize the soil and not kill any deep roots. Wait until things start to come up later in spring and thin out the junk and leave what you want to keep. If you seed it with a really hardy aggressive growing grass, it'll choke out most of the weeds from coming back and it'll help contain the erosion to a minimum. It won't hurt the trees at all unless you let the flames get too intense. But I cleared 50 acres that hadn't been touched ever besides some gravel roadway that was laid down to get to pumping units from a prior oil lease. In nature, fires are an integral part of the normal cycle of sustained regeneration.
