As an architect and historic preservationist, this is sad to see. All is not lost, potentially. I have friends in the south of france who acquired a very large (90+ room) chateau in words condition than this one. It is becoming one of the most beautiful buildings/homes in southwest France. It is now listed as a Class 1 monument with Monument Historique. Thanks for showing this. Cheers-

I’ve seen some amazing restorations on shows like Restoration Home and similar when they seem lost to time and rot. The amount of funding required is significant though!

@@user-vb6gl6nf7c Are you referring to Chateau de Chaumont? His channel is "Escape to Rural France" here on TH-cam. He's about a year into renovations, and still has a long, long way to go. That one was destroyed by fire in the 80's...
To the original post, this one's smaller size may actually work against it, as although it may be more suitable as a residence, the bigger chateau have more commercial potential for sustainability. Just ongoing maintenance has to be extremely expensive, and time consuming, and you need to find a way to pay for that or, like the previous owner, the property gets abandoned.

So good to see you both, it's sad to see this Chateau in a state of ruin, it would cost so much to bring it back to life. The problem with these old buildings is you can't tear them down and rebuild so at least the land can be revitalized, so the whole entire estate sits in ruin. From a lay perspective, it is astonishing to see how quickly (little over a generation) a centuries old stone building can deteriorate if the roof and windows are no longer airtight. No wonder architects are so conscientious about water. What a shame.

A restored 18th century building I lived in and loved for seven years during the 90s was sold by the owners and then inexplicably left to decay once again. I now after the past few years of watching these chateau channels understand their attraction for me. Perhaps it was the music or the shared sense of loss (the mystery of the former inhabitants over the centuries)but I found this a bittersweet film beautifully “Ed”ited and constructed. Well done.

Ed and Ana I work in TV/film production in Ca. you should absolutely do programing on viewing these types of properties, what they would require to rehab is it a buy or pass depending on the level of construction needed. Tell us why it would be a pass or buy depending on $ time and or experience, what is the history of the architecture you are viewing etc. The fact you have in your wheelhouse of knowledge construction and what goes where and why you can explain that to people who are laymen who might be thinking of taking on a project like this one. I like that you did this video and you should do more of this! 🤗

    Pleasing Memories of Bygone Times
Some may find this video boring and irrelevant but a few like I was excited enough to carry on to the end and eagerly subscribe. My interest in it comes from my experience as a young teen living in a French chateau near Orleans in the late ’50’s and early '60’s. It is such a shame seeing a beautiful building left like that, but it's even sadder that people will come to vandalize and destroy what was left. I guess it wasn't for sale years ago, with all the people that were looking for chateau's to buy and fix up, but as you said Edd it is in an expensive area and it would take a lot of money. Have a wonderful weekend. Thank you for sharing, take really good care of yourselves, stay well! Lots of love Kathy x 💖

When I moved to Dordogne two years ago I used to shout 'chateau chateau' at every bend on the road until I got a crick in my neck. There are over 1000 chateaux in this region. These days I'm more like ' ok a chateaux so what's new' ? I am slowly visiting some of them but the heat has put a stop to that. On visiting the incredible Chateau Biron we almost died from the heat, pity we couldn't manage the gardens.

My wife was restless, so I put other Saturday chores on hold and got working. Well, after a lot of private investigation, searching the web, we finally managed to zoom in. Wow. I agree with the architect who commented earlier, that someone who knows his business should be able to bring back this chateau to the glory it deserves. We will keep the secret, it was not easy to find. Now back to my chores.

It would be a miracle if someone actually bought the chateau since it’s in such disrepair. The views and location are absolutely amazing! Wonder if an architecture salvage company will try to save some of the beautiful structural elements such as the stone fireplaces, any salvageable carved woodwork and so on. However, it may be too dangerous to remove them since roof is so damaged. Wonder if it is zoned as a residential or commercial/residential property.

Two serious issues with buying such. First, the local historical society will say its a historical site and will demand you restore the building according to their requirements, and maybe even require it be open to the public. Second It may well cost as much or more than a new replica building. You will possibly have to replace the entire roof because of centuries of rot and you will have to bring the building up to code in every way. You can also have toxic mold issues, etc etc. may be required to replace the dry wall of the entire building.
So lots of possible or likely headaches in doing this.

I imagine the cost of the land the chateau sits on, and the huge cost of restoration, put even the deep pockets off.

The main thing I like about the castle is the land and how it sits in the land. Nice to be in the countryside. Very potentially pretty castle or chateau though.

Oh wow Ed and Anna what a beautiful chateau. So sad to it’s it in such a neglected state. I know you both would make this place so beautiful but I appreciate how busy you are with the business. This has Billy Preterick written all over it, as like you his restoration of these beautiful buildings is beautifully sympathetic. Perhaps when he’s finished the convent? 😆Much love to all the family. Xxxx

The chateau as it stands now is absolutely gorgeous! It would make a wonderful home for someone who appreciates the finer things in life. I would check out that large tree, however, sometimes these look solid but are not really safe and having something this size come crashing down would be dangerous. The owner of the chateau de Lalande has a very experienced tree expert who would know what to do.

I found a few images from five years ago. Ed’s right, it was already too far gone. What a shame! Breaks my heart! Thank you for the visit.

It would be wonderful if you, or someone else who cares as much as you two do, would rescue this beautiful chateau. Sadly, it is too far gone to be rescued without spending far too much money.

Yeah maybe 10 years ago it could have been saved, but it's beyond any reasonable cost/benefit analysis at this point.

What a fun tour! Sad that this chateau wasn’t sold when it was in better condition, as it seems it was just a few years ago. It’s the classic fairytale and you can see how beautiful it once was.
