    These things seem to breed faster than Star Trek's tribbles, and interest in them increases accordingly. If the chancellor really wants to get the UK economy out of the brown stuff, he should invest big-time in guitar drive pedals.

    John Mayer recently made headlines when one of his Dumbles went down during a live performance. The headline was the fact that literally as soon as it went down his tech ran out there and immediately replaced it...with another Dumble. Some guys have all the luck...(except for the fact that one of his Dumbles blew up) LOL!

    Recently came out of the boutique rabbit hole and after a long long time (years) of endless OD pedal purchases I think I finally found ‘my’ sound. Only happened once I took my KOT off and replaced it with a Boss SD-1 and The Dane. I’d been sceptical of a lot of TH-camrs signature gear upto that point, but having tried a early demo model, that Thorpy himself was plugging at a trade show, it always stayed with me until I recently snagged one at a more sensible price. Weird position to be in now, sat watching boutique pedal demos thinking, “ I wouldn’t swap my sound out for that.” I was particularly underwhelmed by pretty much all these pedals. The TS and RAT clones highlighting the strange phenomenon of boutique builders trying to replicate industry standard / sound of ages pedals whilst somehow missing the core ingredients of what makes those pedals tick whilst adding £££ to the price. Anyway I’ve now got a KOT gathering dust on the shelf and a £50 SD1 cutting through the mix, taking all the glory on every solo … Go figure 🤔🎸😏

    The one word i always use to describe the Dumble sound is overtones. They are always harmonically rich and when you hold a note it always goes into this really nice feedback. The Cornerstone Gladio is an excellent example. These pedals sound great.

    There is no singular Dumble sound since each Dumble amp was individually voiced for its owner.

      Bingo! Which is why I went for the Gladio Double instead. They don't claim that their preamp SOUNDS like a Dumble because there's no single "Dumble" sound. Instead, their preamp has a Dumble "feel..." whatever that means. LOL

    • @IamMusicNerd
      @IamMusicNerd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. However, there are a few manufacturers that have gotten access to multiple original Dumbles and have come up with pedals that replicate the sound of those specific ones. (ie, Shin, Vertex, Ethos, etc)

    Most dumble style pedals are attempting to duplicate specifically Robben Fords overdrive special, and from what I hear from these pedals it sounds like a fatter more compressed tubescreamer type tone

  • @jeffmakor7135
    @jeffmakor7135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I've owned two ethos overdrives (one with a 30watt amp), an original Zendrive (pre Lovepedal), Amplified Nation Big Bloom and Alpha drive.
    The Big Bloom was based on the Shin's Dumbloid circuit and sounded b****y awful, as did the Dumbloid in this video.
    It was brittle and the gain sounded cheap and artificial.
    The ethos pedals live were a nightmare with all those controls and options.
    The sound was fine but I still maintain its a studio tool than a live solution where you might want to make corrections on the fly.
    The Alpha drive was simple, a bit dull and uninspiring.
    For me, the straight forward and iconic Dumble tonality was best captured in the Zendrive.
    I have never regretted passing on the other pedals, but selling the Zendrive was a daft move and it's going to be resolved soon enough when I get a secondhand example.
    If you like the Dumble tone, it's best to head for something that doesn't sound fizzy and harsh under gain (the Zendrive can also suck, but has a more pleasing tone and gain stage to these ears thats easily dialled in, making it more usable.
    The Shin version is revealed in this video as overpriced, buzz saw sounding, nasal and harmonically unpleasant.
    I know theres a lot who'll probably disagree but even the reviewers are struggling to say nice things about these boxes.
    Their expressions almost give the game away on several occasions, too.

    • @leandershah1617
      @leandershah1617 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Completely agree with the Shin's Dumbloid. One thing though for anyone purchasing that pedal, If you have a clean amp (Twins/Deluxe/Two-Rock), Dumbloids won't work with those as well as it would with something like a Marshall (better if you could put it in the effects loop but if not also, it'll sound close to an authentic sound than mushy with some shrill/artificial notes in there).
      I experimented a lot with Shin's pedals (signal chain, series/parallel in a wet/dry setup, different amps, etc) but nothing worked as good as a Marshall or Mesa-Boogie (again, best in the fx loop).

      I agree that the Dumbloid sounded like crap ... I have the Ethos and Zen v2 w tube and love them both... Both blow the Dumbloid away.. What was killer is if you stacked the Ethos and Zen drive together or any good drive pedal in front of the Zen..Straight love Homey !

    I've heard many top guitarists play through Dumble amps and NONE of them sound the same, they sound like THAT PLAYER playing through a Dumble. So is there really a "Dumble sound"? Robben Ford sounds the same regardless of what amp he's using. Danish Pete would sound good playing through some crappy solid state amp that fell off the trash truck on the way to the landfill. :-)

    I think it was Mick Taylor who said there's no suc thing as 'a dumble tone' because every amp was handbuilt to what the buyer wanted. Love the sound of the pedal though, interesting that he didn't feel the need for gimmicks like an actual valve in there.

    Before he switched to the all vintage Fender amps when he began the Three Kings tour, Joe Bonamassa was a Dumble guy. He had like 8 of them and sold them all. For me, that was the Holy Grail of guitar tone for years. I went to a guitar show and one of the dealers had a Dumble from Joe's collection and had a price tag of $130,000. I asked if I could finance it at a $1/week for 130,000 weeks. He said he would consider it. Haven't heard back from him yet...

    Played threw a few Dumbles . Played threw just about everything since I started in the middle seventies . The pros who I met that did the same all agreed we liked LOUD STIFF UNFORGIVING ICE PICK SOUNDS . I still love the Dumble sound, surprised anyone under 50 does. Howard himself has changed over the years , these days he hotrods a fail proof more traditional fender tone. (Joe Bonamassa, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Clapton all playing newly Dumblized Fenders ). The JBL 120 was the Best speaker in the 70s. When the kids gonna bring that baby back? ( The one with the metal dust cone that you heard on every classic tune). Always felt Howard was just ripping off Randall Smith's Boogie Like all the others since anyway.

    The original ODS was built for Robben Ford. There is a video on TH-cam where Robben talks about his original Dumble and how it came to be, which I was fortunate to play. I feel that the mystique is far greater than the actual amp. I was seriously thinking of getting one. At that time a Steel String Singer was $5,000.00 which was super expensive for an amp then. When I got a call that I could come and play Robben's I couldn't get there fast enough. Even back then they had the mystique. I was really disappointed as I personally didn't care for it as it didn't get clean enough and I played it for about 4 hours. The edge of breakup tone was great though. That said all Dumbles are custom made to what the person who buys one is looking for. I've only seen two. The one I mentioned and another one that came into a friend of mine's shop to get repaired. He pulled the chassis out and it had all this black goop all over the circuit. Impossible to repair. He called the guy up and told him he'd have to send it back to Dumble to get it fixed. I seriously wonder how many people who 'want' a Dumble have ever actually played one.

    Rubber drawers- capt. may be on to something there. But think of the slapping sounds when you fart- either that or you've got a huge bubble on your bum, a stinky bubble no one around you wants to burst. LOL_ I can just see someone walking really carefully, trying to maintain the bubble until they exit the bedroom. But hey- this would allow you to deposit your farts wherever you chose to. You could save it for the bus or that elevator ride up to the floor you work on. See- we're back to it being a good idea again. Purple, rubber, underwear- with little yellow cow heads on them.
    That's a really specific image Huh- that's because a girl I "knew" once, or twice maybe, one night had on purple panties with little yellow cow heads on them. I will never forget that- why it struck me as hilarious I have no idea but- it did. What an odd choice- and who made them- "Yeah, this is what women want, purple panties with little yellow cow heads on them." She was a strange bird- I left when she got into the whole gothic, vampire thing- wtf? Good looks only go so far ladies- how far? Just a little past purple panties with little yellow cow heads on them- weren't you paying attention?

      Yes! It’s really the transparency of the drive that makes the magic happen. You just can’t get that kind of transparent drive in amplifiers that cost less than $30k. Or pedals under $500. Anyone who can’t hear the difference must surely be a fool.

    Great Video.
    When Dr. Dumble is doing his amps they have to stand on a pentagram in the productionline.
    I d love to watch a video about Pedal Pawn and Jext Telez pedals.

    I've never heard the appeal of a Dumble, it sounds just like a driven Fender amp.

    • @andrewkavanagh6028
      @andrewkavanagh6028 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The appeal is being able to say you have a Dumble, and no one else does, therefore you are now a better guitar player than everyone else.

      Dumble is a marketing genius. He makes amps just like others do. Except he pretends his are made so much more different and special with magic goop. Schematics for amps are not all that different depending on features. That’s why amp tech’s can work on different amps because the tech is not that different from one to the other. IMHO 🤷🏼‍♂️ On the other hand JB and R Ford probably have better ears than I do so maybe there’s something there?

      I’m not dumb Dumbo worship guy but clearly a thing going with them
      Not worth the money but
      What I know is some have a solid state rectifying section which adds to the more immediate response to the note/notes played
      There is less 3D feeling compared to a fender
      You can’t hide playing it as much the soft 3D sound of a blackface fender is enjoyable and helps that
      Ever play a Roland jazz?
      Dumble is a further tweaking of that fender sound to fit particular players styles

    This is great comedy. They can't demo the these pedals with a straight face. Nobody really knows what a Dumbbell sounds like. Robin Ford and Larry Carlton would sound great through any fender style amp
