      No , if you fall toward the chipper , you will be pushing on the bar to push yourself back away from the chipper. This is the normal setup , if you bump into it , the feeder will stop or reverse direction.

      If you are being pulled in..your arms reach up and hit the safety bar, pushing it forward...reversing the feed.

    Josh, I have the PTO version of this chipper and I love it. Mine has a slip clutch in the PTO and everything is belt driven, including the flywheel/fan. I use it on my 25 HP compact tractor and it works great.

    These chippers are great. Have the PTO driven one for my 30hp tractor. The design uses the PTO to power a hydraulic motor is way better than a direct drive. Won’t break shear pins and way less strain on the tractor. We have pushed the 8” limit and it works perfectly.

    I’m in GA at a similar latitude to you and I’ve had great success using somewhat aged woodchips on bare areas. The southern grasses - Bermuda and centipede are very encouraged and fill in quickly. The mulch holds moisture and adds soil activity as it breaks down further.
    It’s best to use chips made while leaves and needles are still on - the greenery adds nitrogen to the mix so the mulch isn’t robbing from the plants you want to grow.

    I have to imagine this will be a huge bonus for you in your soil building. With the apparent large amount of woods on your property, it would appear you have plenty of material for the picking to chip up and spread out on the pastures.....its only a question of time and effort. 1 truckload at a time......Nice looking piece of gear.

Can you maybe do a follow up on it in a few months after some more use? With the beetle kill spruce all over our property this would make quick work of the pucker pole clean up that needs to be done!

    Like the chipper steer wood chipper but I personally would cut most of the tree even 2in diameter limbs as fire wood realize you not have that much need for fire wood but the think wood would make campfire wood for evening fires also the ashes from small wood potentially has more potash that be good in garden for select vegetables

    What is the hydraulic gpm required to operate the chipper. Have a standard flow skid steer. Not the high flow. Therefore this is important not to over heat the hydraulic cooling system on skid steer.
    For instance bush hog attachments will do this if not matched to gpm of machine.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      16-30gpm required for this machine...you can order the optional oil cooler with it if using in hot temps. My flow is 21.8gpm

  • @williamgaines9784

    Your decision on using the hydraulic version was certainly sound. Hooking up PTO takes way more time than hydraulic hoses, even if you could do the 3 point connection as fast as the SSQA. It is nice to have a variety of tools.
    My only advice on using the chipper for smoker wood is to make sure you start with a clean machine. You would not like getting some poison ivy, or the like, in the chips for your food.🤢
    If you have any pecan that needs cutting, it makes an excellent smoke for meats as well.

    • @andyjones6361
      @andyjones6361 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always have a bear of a time hooking up the flat face connections. That is on my grapple anyway. If it settles at all and the cylinders get compressed either direction the force needed to connect is brutal. I’m not half the man I used to be but I’m no sissy man either. I end up breaking out wrenches and releasing the pressure that way. And I always shut down the skid steer and release the pressure before detaching.
      So my point is the PTO doesn’t sound like a bad option at all!!! Quick attach pto and the quick attach 3-point. Don’t see a problem!!

    • @williamgaines9784
      @williamgaines9784 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyjones6361 My tractor has I-match, but one still must reach between that arbor to hook up the PTO and it is a "headache" literally sometimes. Also, going forward to pick up an implement is better/faster than backing. Those motors should not hold pressure when they aren't running, so hookup and disconnect should not be as difficult as a grapple might be. Only having a tractor, as I do, would mean PTO, or self powered.

    • @andyjones6361
      @andyjones6361 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@williamgaines9784 I really thought about getting a self powered chipper. I have looked at the equipment auction sites and they still pretty pricy and you never know what problems you might be buying! maybe the thing for me would be to line up my work at the property with a big pile and then rent one and run it fast and hard. Run it like a borrowed mule as they say!!

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't prescribe antibiotics...my cows are not in the intensive care unit with super infections...if I have a sick animal I treat it...I do not believe we should give humans or animals antibiotics when they are well. If you have to give an animal, raised for consumption, antibiotics in it's food because it's living conditions would be unsuitable for survival...what does that say about your food? That's my defense...I'm not a physician...therefore I don't make the decisions for antibiotic administration....I follow orders....I don't treat the WELL....I treat the sick..seems like a good way to run a farm doesn't it....not running a feed lot that depends on prophylactic antibiotics for survival in overcrowded and manure filled lots my friend. That's the rub...common sense isn't it?
