      @@StoneyRidgeFarmer I like the name Lester for the truck...because it is "less-ter than perfect".
      And about your crossing...our neighbor was having the same problem so he had my brother build a 'ford' (not sure if that's the correct spelling but its pronounced the same) in the creek. It has worked out very well. You could always use the culverts somewhere else on the farm.
      And by the way I love to watch your videos..keep them coming!! Lots of love to you and Mrs Stoney Ridge!

      Concur! One of my co-workers spent 3 or 4 days in the hospital after shock loading a logging chain 'til it broke and the end whip-lashed back around his head, nearly taking his eye out.

    Josh, I really enjoy your channel. Please keep them coming! On March 12th of this year, I got my own dozer stuck in the mud. I was trying to pull it out forwards with an excavator by reaching over the back side of the dozer blade and dragging it out forwards, towards me. I've done this before and never had a problem. As I was pulling the dozer towards me, a wear/cutting edge on the bottom of the dozer blade snapped off, flew through the air, and hit me right between the eyes. The safety glasses I was wearing saved my life, but I still have more than two dozen facial fractures, and I am facing a few surgeries after the virus goes away and the hospitals in my area open back up. Why am I telling you this? I have more than 25,000 hours in the seat of various heavy iron. I know better. I made a mistake that almost killed me and I cringed when I watched that chain go tight in your video. There are much better ways to retrieve things. Take it from somebody who recently almost took his own head off! A couple tips for you and anybody willing to read this far: Pull from the lowest point possible on the stuck unit, even if that means spending time with a shovel first. And.....Pull from actual tow hooks or tie-down spots. You were pulling from grab handles for entry that very easily could have snapped off. Last: (Especially true with a winch cable, but true for chains too) Use a "dampener" when pulling. By this, I mean a blanket, and old coat, even a canvas tarp. Wrap it around your chain or cable and secure it with duct tape or zip ties. I use an old moving blanket that I got at Harbor Freight for $5. If you use this, and the chain or cable snaps......The dampener absorbs a bunch of that shock and may prevent serious injuries. Sometimes we are all guilty of doing what's easy, instead of what's correct. That recent choice recently got me very seriously injured. Avoid making the same mistake I did! Good luck in the future with your awesome channel, and thank you for sharing your life with us, and keep the great videos coming!

      YIKES! That is quite a story. The mental image I have of your injuries is going to make me think a great deal before taking any shortcuts going forward. Thank you for sharing and I hope your surgery goes well.

    Why did you take the tracks off? Anyway when pulling something out of a mudhole it's better to hook low on the stuck unit:hooking high and it pulls down on the front.

    Just a little math about using smaller culverts - A 24 inch culvert has 452.39 square inches so two 24 inch culverts have a total 904.78 square inches - A 48 inch culvert has 1,809.6 square inches - You will need about four 24 inch culverts to move the same about of water as one 48 inch culvert

    Josh......if you want to eliminate opening the hood to hook up that wire.....either run 2 wires or a double wire if you have some one wire butt connected in place of that aligator clamp and to a toggle switch in the cab and other from the toggle switch to the siliniod. Ive run a bunch of old trucks set up like that. Ive always put a switch in the cab as ive been in a few instances were ive needed to shut the motor off quickly.......its alot easyier to just flip a switch off.

    I feel ya bro. I was raised on a farm and one time I got a tractor so stuck you could turn the rear wheels with your hand. I mean the tractor was sitting on the differential so hard that there was hardly any resistance to turning the rear wheels. I had no way to get the tractor out and would have been up a creek if a man had not saw my mess, knew a trick for getting tractors unstuck, and helped me get the tractor out. Sorry, but when I saw your mess I couldn't help but smile.

    Liked the video I have to do some culvert work myself on a area that was washed out by the rains. Just a heads up two 24" pipes do not equal a 48" pipe. The area of a circle is 3.14 R squared so a 24" pipe is 452 Square inches time 2 is 904 square inches. A 48 inch pipe has an area of 1808 square inches so you would need four 24" pipes to equal a 48" pipe.

    Josh as FYI 1 48" culvert by cross sectional area has nearly 2x the flow capacity of 2x24" culverts. If you have the fill, replace the 2 x 24" culverts with 2 x 48" and cure the problem of flood waters crossing the road. also clean up the debris to keep the culverts clear and free flowing .

  • @davesmith8936
    @davesmith8936 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's always hard to see slopes and terrain on video. You know water seeks the low spots. I'd do three things to make that road much more durable.
    1. Make sure the middle of the bridge is THE low spot. make the whole thing a gentle, shallow U shape but make SURE it's not flat. If the water decides to cut a new channel 10' beyond the edge you are going to lose the whole thing and have a new creek bed.
    2. I'd dig down and add a third 24" (or even 36" if there's room) culvert on top of the other two forming a triangular configuration. That will add MUCH more water handling capability. And BTW... Two 24" culverts are not the same as a single 48" as you mentioned. Huge difference in area and therefore flow capacity.
    3. On the down stream edge of the bridge I'd dig a narrow trench and fill with concrete creating a little mini secant wall and then do the rip-rap and concrete. Basically you want to make a concrete spillway that the whole flood stage flow can pour over without erosion. The little secant wall or footing at the top is to prevent the flow from getting under/behind the concrete and rip-rap spillway.
    Love the channel! Woooo!

    b) 3ft drain pipe = 7.07 sq ft More water than (2) - 24in pipes

    The cross sectional area of (2) 24in pipes is only 905 in^2. Just (1) 48in pipe has double that area at 1,810 in^2. It’s not linear, it goes up by the square of the radius. So if you keep having problems one 48in pipe would more than handle it.

    Find you an old flat deck 48' or 53' trailer that's been taken out of commission, cut the running gear off it and bury both ends about 30" inches deep and call it done. Best farm bridge ever.

  • @1guyin10
    @1guyin10 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The bridge looks a lot better. Belts and hoses don't like to sit in the woods for years. It's hard to tell how old the rubber on it is. You will probably have to replace most of it in the next year or so. Still, it has a really solid drivetrain so it should make a good farm truck.

    Water is a powerful beast, if this is an odd occurrence for the water to get up over the road then you just repair the road as you did and call it good till next time. If this occurs on a regular basis then I would dig out your culvert pipes and open the ditch up completely. Then I would use the material you dug out to raise the elevation of the road on either side of the creek and then find a retired flatbed semi trailer to put across for a bridge. I'm sure cousin could hook you up with one.

    You commented that 2 24 inch pipes were equal to 1 48 inch pipe. The formula for circle area is pie(sic) r squared. So radius of 24 in pipe is 12 inch or 1 ft. Same with 48 inch pipe is 24 inch or 2 ft. So take pie out of equation, then 1 squared is 1 square ft. 2 squared is 4 square ft. Therefore 1 48 inch pipe has 2 times volume as 2 24 inch pipes

    The bridge came out nice. Getting good on the skid steer. Next time, bust up the dirt below before you add nee dirt on top. The dirt you added is going to sluff off as it is not bonded to the original dirt. Some people compact in lifts using a sheeps foot roller, creating undulations for the new dirt being added to bond to the existing dirt.

    Next time this happens try putting the chain as low as possible on the skid steer will work a lot better

      Doug Huey if he lift the bucket up there should be a good spot to chain to the frame

    We will always weld chain hooks on the side of our buckets down low. Geometry is a lot better if you pull out stuck equipment by hooking onto it down low. Also gives you a bit of freedom to pull against the tug machine at different angles and still use the bucket like you were doing to lift the front wheels up out of the muck. Keep the videos coming. I watch every one...albeit a bit late sometimes when it’s planting season. 👍🏼

    Josh, just an fyi, as a plumber by trade ,you said at 2:00 , two 24" pipes make a 48" pipe. As far as dia. And water flow goes. It does not . Sorry.

      Yep...the math was explained to me a little better....however it still would have flooded over..the creek filled the 4 foot pipe way way up stream..there was alot of water coming through

    It may have been better to to hook the chain lower down on the front. What it was doing was trying to tilt the skidder forward as you pulled it putting all the weight on the front axle pulling it down into and against the front of the hole and taking it off the rear.

    Figures after you took the tracks off :)
    The same thing happened to me the other day. Got my new Kubota MX5800 buried. Luckily my old Ford 335 was able to pull it out after a little digging.
    Good news is that my dry land has a spring or at least a seep I didn't know about.
    I dug a 3 ft hole and it filled up overnight.
    I need to get a tank and pump to set up irrigation

    You will flood less if you clean the debris out of your stream. Is a pain, but a clean stream means free flow when needed.

    Sometimes you get stuck and sometimes things get broke, that just means you're working tough! While you are fixing the belt you should fix the starter so you don't have to open the hood everytime to start and shut off. Love Mater! Give her a nice pressure washing and she will look brand new. On a totally different subject love the coveralls. My Carharts are super comfortable, but take a lot of grief everytime I wear them from my wife.. Imagine that. She is from WV and I'm originally from Cape Cod. You would think she would be more into rocking the coveralls!? They are the official WV tuxedo for Pete's sake!

    Josh, try to find a Gates FleetRunner belts. They are usually green but not always. I use them on anything I haul or tow with. Little more expensive but I have never had on fail.

    The truck probably would have pulled it out if you hooked the chain lower on the skidsteer

    I wonder why skid steer owners do not weld/ attach a 10-20 thousand pound winch to the front of the skid steer...so you always have the towing cable ready and you can attach it to stationary objects when you get stuck, like big trees, or stumps, etc...or attach it to another vehicle and let the winch help pull you out,

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      theoretically you could just mount a winch to anything I guess

    Agree with the comments about hooking the chain through the hand grip loops being dangerous, puts the pull to high and digs the nose into the mud making more wore work for the tug vehicle, tends to upend the skidsteer, and is a serious risk to the operator if the chain fails, could do more than take out teeth, might whip across chest neck or face, all very dangerous.
    Two 24 in pipes don't have the same cross section as a 48 in pipe, the multiplier for cross section area is root 2 or 1.4 giving a c/s area equivalent to that of a 33 inch pipe. If the water backs up enough at that crossing to to flow over the roadway, you need a much larger pipe capacity, or an actual bridge that is clear in the creek bed. Ultimately the object is for the water to flow with little or no obstruction at the crossing, then the water level will not rise up to erode the crossing.

    Put the tracks back on the skid loader and you dig out a proper pond in that hole to help lower the water table some in that bottom and make it more usable? Then you will have a proper pile of dirt ready to use when you need it...

    I'm going to have to ask what possessed you to hook to the handle for getting in and out of the machine hahahahahahahahah next time Josh hook it to the bucket it makes it a whole lot easier and when you are real stuck you can use the hydraulics to get yourself out even if the truck or tractor can't pull you out

    • @steveperry2314
      @steveperry2314 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I have rolled my bucket with a chain tight around it many times to get unstuck. Hook it to a tree or heavy object...roll bucket, move, tighten chain....repeat.

    Drill some holes on each side, set some poles and build a small retaining wall next to the edges of the driveway. Then you can pour the concrete too.
