    as someone who read the original fanfiction while anna todd (back then it was imaginator1d) was updating it i feel like it’s my personal duty to bring up that the original bet was for harry to take tessa’s virginity and he proved it to everyone by keeping the bloody sheets they had sex on and showed them to everyone. and then kept them in the trunk of his car. and then tessa still went back to him

The first fanfic I ever read was about Luke Hemmings, a member of five seconds of summer, in a relationship with a 16 year old girl that was the best friend of his daughter. The kicker was that Luke himself was barely 19 when it was written, so the author literally aged him up and made it problematic !

    Are we gonna talk about the drastic change of Tessa's behavior from the first movie to the second movie? In the first movie she seems shy and is afraid to speak up for herself and then the second movie happens and we're supposed to believe she is having these screaming matches and not wearing underwear to parties?? It's just so unrealistic. Also that would mean that Hardin literally brings out the WORST in her.

      This whole series infuriated me. But the part that REALLY made my blood boil was when Tessa said "you can either f*ck me, or you leave." And Hardin/Harry actually had sex with her! Sir, you are literally taking advantage of someone when they are drunk! In the book she was so drunk that if she had another drop of alcohol, she would have passed out. I just really want to know why Anna Todd thought it was a GREAT idea to have that be their first sex scene after the huge betrayal in book 1.

    • @GamingWithGlacier
      @GamingWithGlacier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

    so my friend (she’s 15 i am too) is OBSESSED with the after movies (and books). i never watched them but i thought i’d watch this video just to get some insight on what she’s talking about and now i don’t know what the fuck to do because she continues to ramble on and on about how hardin is the ideal boyfriend and how she’s so jealous of tessa and everything so now i’m genuinely concerned for her because on top of this she’s a very insecure girl (tw. has struggled a lot with an ed to the point where she couldn’t go to school or do any of her passions because of it) and so this is just extremely harmful. i wrote down this comment because i highly doubt that she’s the only person who’s creating weird expectations and ideals for relationships in the future so these type of movies are probably just as harmful as everyone thinks

      It's honestly depressing what movies like this do to young ignorant children. Coming from a 15 year old as well, it's honestly a relief she has a friend like you by her side because if she's actually in a situation where she believes that kind of relationship is healthy then she needs a friend to tell her the truth. You can either educate her on it or just let her grow out of it, because she'll probably grow older and start realizing that it's not something to idolize.
      The books are more concerning than the movies honestly. There are scenes where he abuses her and (keeps the blood-stained sheets they had sex on to prove that he took her virginity to his friends...yeah) and etc, this is only information I pulled from other comments since I am not going to waste my time reading the books, but it's just so disturbing and gross.
      Carrying on, I wish your friend the best and hopefully she doesn't fall into a toxic relationship of her own. This video talks about After in much more depth, but if you want to watch a commentary that reacts to it and shows more of the toxic scenes, I personally recommend 'Dylan is in Trouble' he makes a lot of jokes but hearing the actual scenes makes you hate hardin much more. :)

      Your friend is lucky to have someone like you who is invested in her well-being. I hope your friend gets the love, help, and support she needs from other sources in her life as well because you’re right, it does set a terrible precedent and opens the door for those weird and unhealthy relationship dynamics. I read the After series when i was 14/15 years old and I felt the same way as your friend. I ended up getting into a relationship similar to the one in the series in college, and I definitely think the series influenced me to idealize Hardin and Tessa’s relationship and accept one in my own life so yikes lmao. Definitely don’t think we’re the only ones either, but I’m glad you see it at the very least

    • @jess3452
      @jess3452 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Just know that your support for her well-being is enough, just being a good friend is enough. But if you want to talk to her about it, I would. Maybe she just doesn’t know. I kinda knew it was wrong but getting some attention and validation even the bad kind was better than nothing because I really didn’t think there was any way someone would validate me in a healthy way. She might not listen and I wouldn’t push it too hard, but having someone who cares about her express a different opinion about it and offer an alternative might help if you are looking to bring it up with her. Although keep in mind that she is not your responsibility, even though you certainly care about her and want to show it, you are already doing enough just by being supportive

    I don't know if this was mentioned in the video but did it piss anyone else off that Hardin, a acholic, took Tessa's dad, who btw is also a acholic, to a bar to get drunk and then started a bar fight while I'm pretty sure knowing that Tessa's dad was a acholic? And then after that Tessa just forgives Hardin for literally helping her dad feed into his addiction? Like that whole ordeal was so odd to me and definitely rubbed me the wrong way.

    On of my biggest issues with this film/book/fanfiction (or whatever you want to call it) Is that it's SOOOOOO boring and so long for absolutely NO reason. None of the characters seem to have a life outside of Tessa and Hardin and their toxic disastrous relationship, their all there for them. Which is not what a good writer should do, characters, big or small should have a story background and have a function to be there not only just for the characters to make them look good, for example there was this one character who was a girl (I can't remember her) but she did the dirty with Hardin and he filmed it, it got spread online and she lost her scholarship to a school and then they meet up years later and the girl forgives Hardin. This was so annoying to see,
    1. First of all, every victim of Hardin that shows up in this book just forgives him and it's all about how he feels so bad and if they don't accept his apology bla bla bla, not about how the girls had opportunities taken away from them because of Hardin, not how Hardin traumatized them, not how he ruined their lives and reputation, like why are you trying to make ME feel sympathetic for a literal ABUSER. 2. After this little interaction there was no other trace of her if I remember, it was just like she disappeared, we got no development because her character only exist to make Hardin feel and look good, like every single character in after except Tessa and she is BORING. Not to even start on the romanticization of the toxic relationship between these 2, After had a great potential to be a mystery series where Hardin manipulates Tessa and how she thinks he's so perfect and then finds all the other victims and decides to break up with him and move on, but no it just had to be another BORING movie about abusive relationships.

      You don’t have to accept an apology from anyone. Especially if the person apologizing ruined your life.
      This is something that really bothers me. People who don’t accept apologies are seen as rude and petty. That is a *horrible* thing to tell people, especially people like Hardin and Tessa. For people like Hardin, it tells them that they can do whatever they want no matter how much it hurts another person, and all they have to do is apologize and then they’re able to just move on. And for people like Tessa, it tells them that they should push their feelings to the side and if someone treats them like shit they just need to suck it up. Either way, it fuels the cycle of abuse.

    • @callyszt
      @callyszt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thequeenofcringe1585 Exactly, I am a firm believer in 2nd chances and that people can change but there is always a limit. And someone ruining your life, literally getting you kicked out of your house and making you loose your scholar ship to college and ruining your rep is wayyy past that line. Idc if it's a book it still feeds a harmful narrative, and that girl didn't have to accept ANY apology Hardin made bc he will never be able to repay her with all the opportunities she lost and all the chaos and drama he has caused in her life.

    I have always hated fanfics that include real people. Remember how danisnotonfire and Phil Lester were shipped and written about so much? So disrespectful

    • @Alex-fc8xn
      @Alex-fc8xn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      It even ruined dating each other for them, and was even more heinous because neither of them were out as queer and it put so much pressure on them regarding coming out. Because if they did earlier then it would have made the shipping even worse, but also even though it was all speculation it still basically outed them before they were ready.

      Personally, I don’t really mind if a fanfic includes real people, as long as the real people have expressed that they are comfortable with people writing about them, and as long as the author respects the real people’s boundaries. As always, explicit consent is key.

We haven't ever watched the other two and I don't think we have the intention of doing it but we still talk about how horrible it was sometimes.

    Thank you for constantly bringing up the time line lol it pissed me off so much!
    The 1st movie should have been the entirety of Tessa’s first year.
    The second movie with the internship should have been the summer between her second and third year. It could be some dramatic “it’s been a year since we’ve seen each other” or whatever. Then she could have had a full time internship where she’s working for the company for a few months, not the maybe 2 weeks she was there in the movie!? It would have made more sense that the company is offering her a position at the new branch; she could transfer schools before the new school year starts.
    The 3rd movie should have taken place in Tessa’s third year & Hardin’s fourth. So _that’s why_ everyone is talking about Hardin’s graduation and he and Tessa are arguing about where they’re going to live and what he’s going to do if he moves to Seattle!!!!
