    Keep the photoshop for Lightroom users coming! These are great

    The Neural Filter for Depth Blur is very good at this. I recognize that sometimes it is not good enough and then this and masking is a good complement..

    WOW Mr Morganti, this is going to be so useful to me. My daughter got married inn September and the photographer gave her 462 photos afterwards. He took them on a Sony A9 or maybe the A7 and they're super sharp throughout and I can now blur the backgrounds on selected ones thanks to your timely post. Thankyou

    Excellent tutorial,I find it very helpful

    It's a good concept but I think it still needs work as the blur mask is overlapping the golfers shirt etc. in places so it doesn't quite look realistic.

    You can get really close to this in LR now. Get a good mask (take your time) of the subject, copy & invert the subject mask (cleanup the inverted mask!). Then intersect the inverted mask with a linear graduated filter, followed by reducing clarity etc. Because it's in LR, you can change any part of it at any time or turn the mask off.
    I shoot a lot of surfing photos, using the Canon 300mm f2.8 II, always wide open. This technique let's me blur out distracting background riders etc. Any water spray you can remove from the inverted mask using Subtract Color or Luminocity mask.

      I have been doing this in LR for a while. I prefer reducing sharpness. I read somewhere once (can’t remember the source) that algorithmically LR defaults to a lens blur when sharpness is reduced. In any case the result is pleasing.

      @@SteveSSBB yep, I have used reduced sharpness and it's good. Because I'm shooting 300mm @ f2.8 I already have good separation. I found reduced clarity looked more natural. Still the technique works well in LR these days.

    An interesting experiment would be to take two photos of a subject like the golfer. One small with a small aperture and the other with a large aperture. Then see if you can create the same depth of field blur with Photo AI or other blurring software.

    Still don't understand why Adobe hides useful stuff like this away in something like tutorials, maybe in the next update there will be a hot key to find all the tools and actions that you rarely use, thanks for the tutorial Anthony, they should build a shortcut into Photoshop /Lightroom, to your TH-cam channel! 👏👏👍

    Interesting timing as Nicole S. Young also released a video on this today, although her method is a bit different and didn't use that quick action.

    Now you just need to deal with the notorious blurred edges, here around the golfer's head - Gaussian blur does this where a blurred surface surrounds sharp edges. I think surface blur is a better choice - without being perfect. Or is it lens blur - I don't remember, but gaussian is the worst.

    Excuse me, but it is actually not realistic because the golfer's cap is partly blured. Can the mask be corrected ?

  • @paularnold51

    I've been hoping for something like this for a while. I have one question though. I can't tell if my eyesight is off or not, but to me it looks like this procedure leaves a small glow on the golfers hat that works it way down his back until it reaches a point that is in line with where the Gradient starts/ends on the fairway. I'm curious as to how that would look on a print, or if it would even matter. Thank you.

    Why wouldn’t you use the Neural Filter Depth Blur? Faster, easier, more accurate imho.

    Thanks for the tutorial, the masking at the subject's cap seems a bit blurry, something like Halo, how to fix that?

    • @TheCobra65427
      @TheCobra65427 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be corrected. It involves painting the mask area (cap) you want to be sharper with the same value of gray from the sharp area (his belt). You can get that value using the eye dropper tool.

    Have you ever tried this using Tilt-Shift Blur? I do this using the top layer masked to the subject only. Layer below, I've removed the subject so it's only the background. Convert background layer to a smart object and apply the Filter->Blur Gallery->Tilt Shift

    I think using Field Blur would be a much better way.

  • @lcador9

    Very unauthentic results. The hallo around the golfer, especially the pink shirt, ruins the image for me. I have never found any of these artificial blurs to be satisfactory. Much better to buy and learn to use wide aperture lenses as well as tilt shift lenses.

    this is Not how to blur background. I am watching your videos and this surprise me a lot .......... i dont think for one minute that you blur background this way to a client

    Why is there a halo around his cap?

    • @tpmarkham
      @tpmarkham ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I noticed that too. Personally I would have cut the Gaussian blur down some more like around 12 to reduce the halo.
