Is offense the main and lone priority during the off-season? Which free agents could the Rays actually get? To unpack the continued lack of offensive production, and whether there are some names that will soon be former Rays players, WTSP’s Sports Director Evan Closky joins the show.Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Carson Williams just hit a walk off Grand Slam yesterday! 👍🏽👍🏽☝🏽☝🏽☝🏽
My kind of episode. Great content guys. Sparked a mailbag question…I’ll send it via voicemail later.
The worry is that with how good our pitching will be they will roll out the same lineup!
...that would be a tragic mistake and hopefully one that doesn't happen.
Thanks
Always, the thanks go to you Sam!
Great stuff, guys!
I hate to bring up the elephant in the room, but do we know whether the Rays are going to be on the hook for Wander's contract?
If not, I'd love to see the Rays grab Santander on a 3yr deal for his OF/1B/DH platoon ability and presumably his power.
I would also like to bring up Simpson and Carson.
If Carson has close to Walls defense, I'd rather his potential pop in the lineup every day.
1 C. Simpson LF
2 Y. Diaz 1B
3 J. Caminero 3B
4 R. Santander DH
5 J. Lowe RF
6 B. Lowe/C. Morel 2B
7 C. Williams SS
8 J. Siri/J. DeLuca CF
9 B. Rortvedt C
I could definitely see the rays going after Anthony Santander in a back loaded contract like 4 years but he gets paid the most of it year 3 and 4.
@@johntardis75hope ur kidding, name the last free agent that the Rays win after like that?
I don't think it's a guarantee Carson Williams is up the beginning of next year or maybe any point next year at least not till the end. Look at Junior this year
@rainmangoulet931 it's never too late to start. There's been reports after the fact of making offers to Freeman and Judge. Santander is a rare opportunity to go after a need that has versatility rather than a sign of a new trend moving forward. I don't really expect it, but I would welcome it for the right price.
@rainmangoulet931 it's a long shot at best, but if the defense is up to snuff, I don't see the harm. I guess we'll see what he looks like in the spring.
A shame the way this season turned out because there is no standout team in the AL (or NL for that matter). Especially among the wildcards. Don't see it happening, but to have any prayer for what remains of 2024, the Rays would have to somehow whittle the 5.5 game deficit to no more than 2 games out going into the final week of the season to whoever is ahead of them. But to do that they would have to go on a massive run, which they have shown you no indication that they are capable of doing to this point.
I think it's a safe take to say they're not going to be playing October baseball for the sixth consecutive season :/
With Wanders 8 million due next year the Rays need to know ASAP if they're obligated to pay or not. There is also the problem with tv money? I 0
I think personally it's time to part ways with Chad Mottola because consistency has to be part of his job description and he's shown he can't get back-to-back years of any sort of consistency to this team....I would take play baseball team full of Brandon Lowes that are slightly below average with the glove and well above average with the bat or at the minimum more of those guys theb less of them I mean Evan it's not like this team is defensively making a ton of errors even besides the defensive players you named. Siri also makes some stupid plays because he likes to mustard things up too much and his attitude can suck so u wanna keep him for his defensive glove, 40% stike out rate and maybe 20 homers? His 17 homers are a third of his hits and my problem is between say him Jackson n Walls is he's a starter.
I figure big moves from the Jays after their disappointing season, Soto moves on because NYY won't pay him Judge+ money, and Boston seemingly isn't in a spending mood. Accordingly, all these could be wrong, but I like a Rays playoff return.
But, we're trying to be more specific...not playoff team, but AL East champion.
Understand. It's a worthy goal, even though the expanded playoffs have diluted the value of a divisional win. @@LockedOnRays
@@LockedOnRaysProbably a more realistic timetable is for the Rays to be in the mix for a wild card for next season and then hopefully 2026 division champions. By that time, their prospects should be solidly in place.
Boston not spending is working out pretty good for them, Yankees farm system isn't that bad plus they are still going spend money they're the Yankees, I don't blame Toronto for trying to run it back next season with the core players they have their bullpen has been atrocious this year and they haven't had very good timely hitting and last the Orioles are going to be here for a while competing at the top of this division. Personally I don't see anybody in the AL East dropping off really enough to make a difference. Point being they just need to play better
@@rainmangoulet931 Hear you. Boston in the playoffs next year, you think? They're better than most thought this year, but I doubt if Red Sox fans are satisfied!
