The comment section can't seem to understand that "overrated" and "bad" don't mean the same
Exactly, an overrated movie still has merits.
+Brayden Fitzsimmons Not every bad movie is overrated, not every overrated movie is bad as well, BUT, the overrated movie CAN be bad. For example Titanic. Personally for me, it is the WORST movie ever made (among the ones that got huge success of course, I'm not counting Asylum movies here, though I can always have more fun with Asylum movies)... And yet, Titanic won 11 Oscars. So, it's overrated AND bad

As much as I love it, I still think The Hunger Games is kinda overrated
I think this list is based on films that are considered some of the greatest films of all time based off fan fare, critical reception at the time of it release and the amount of Oscar nominations/wins with the commercial success of the films being dashed in. Hunger games never been considered a groundbreaking Oscar worthy based film nor it gotten nominations at the Oscars and other prestigious Hollywood film awards like avatar, the English patient, crash, and Shakespeare in love. Hunger games is seen and it just a fun, good but not great Hollywood blockbuster with great performances by Jennifer Lawrence and other cast members.

I think The Dark Knight deserves a nomination... sure, it's a great movie, but #4 on IMDb? Think about it, just because Heath Leadger was a great Joker and now he's dead doesn't mean the movie is so good...

Actually, it's number 4 because it is a good movie. Had his role not been a cause of death, the movie would have been still as popular. Plot's good, characters are memorable. Sound track was amazing. Maybe a little too long. But it was a damn sight more enjoyable then most other comic book movies out now.

thingwithfeathers I think Let It Go was pretty catchy and I liked the singer's voice too. It's probably the most popular song in the movie because the animation was spactacular in that scene where the song played, and Elsa's character development just made people like Let It Go more.

Most of these films on the list are actually quite good but overwhelmingly bashed. Thus they are underrated, not overrated.
Overrated films would be ones like MCU, Empire Strikes Back, and Wrath of Khan which are highly rated just because it's a tradition to believe they are good, but aren't really that great if you're going on how much fun or how satisfying it is to actually watch them; mostly Wrath of Khan and Empire Strikes Back are fun for the endings and a couple of other scenes - otherwise flat plot and not really exciting. MCU films make Avatar look like one of the most original blockbusters ever created.
Linden Stromberg it’s actually the other way around. The movies on the list are good but are not great but are considered so by prestigious film critics and by the amount of awards it wins at the academy awards, golden globes and other upper elite Hollywood awards. Everyone knows MCU, and wrath of khan are not groundbreaking or innovative or prestigious films meant to impress critics, and win a ton of Oscars, they are meant to make a ton of money at the box office and just to entertain audiences. That’s why they aren’t on the list bc a large amount of people and critics don’t put them on a prestigious pedestal with the expectation of their crazy fan bases (in terms of MCU)

The most overrated movie of all time is the dark knight. I mean seriously, it is compared with masterpieces when it is very far from one. It is ranked #4 on IMDB beating schindlers list, pulp fiction, the return of the king, citizen kane, the good, the bad and the ugly, the empire strikes back, psycho... If thats not overrated then I don't know what is.
+joe foley To right, putting it in that company is batshit crazy. I think dark knight has some excellent moments but it's a disjointed narrative. The plot contrivances are pretty vulgar and the character motivations swing so violently any suspension of disbelief is ruined by the end. I've always preferred Batman begins which deals with more relatable themes and has some wonderful lines.

I really don't get the whole thing with Frozen. People wouldn't shut the fuck up about how good it was when it was coming out, and now they won't shut the fuck up about how much it sucks. I saw it, and it was fine. It wasn't anywhere close to Lion King or How to Train Your Dragon (which isn't really fair), but it also wasn't a fucking holocaust of cinema that people are trying to make it now. It was a Disney movie, that's about it.

Esha Karim I think Olaf is supposed to look like a doofus. It fits with how he's blissfully unaware of what happens to snowmen in summer. I actually think he's one of the better comic relief characters in movie history.
Overall, I thought Frozen was rather mediocre for a Disney movie. Do You Wanna Build a Snowman and Let It Go were the only songs I liked in that film, and Elsa and Olaf were the only characters I found interesting. Anna was too gullible for her own good, and Hans was quite weak as a villain. I did identify with a lot of Elsa's side of the story, though. Still, there are at least ten Disney films I would rank higher than Frozen.

Nova Ruk Iron Man 3 was hugely hyped up prior to its release. Once it hit theaters though, the hype quickly died. The trailer did a fantastic job of getting people hyped up for the movie. Unfortunately the movie wasn't as good as the trailer led people to believe. The major thing that killed all the hype, was the fact they turned the Mandarin, one of Iron Man's biggest villains into a joke. Even if the movie had played out like the trailer portrayed, the movie wouldn't have received much hype due to how they ruined the Mandarin.
How do you spot someone who doesn't know shit about comics? They are okay with the way the Mandarin was portrayed in Iron Man 3.

Draggon Reaper I don't know about that. I don't read comics, I just enjoy the movies and shows but I was disappointed with how they handled Mandarin whereas my friend who reads comic a hell of a lot didn't mind the change because she thought it was original. Granted I still think the scenes with Slattery are entertaining and pretty funny but I do understand why people hate it.
MoonriseKingdom23 I don't read comics all that much. From what I have been told by friends that are very hardcore into comic books. The Mandarin is to Iron Man what the Joker is to batman. From the little I have read about the Mandarin, the only portrayal that was close to the original is what he does prior to you finding out he is just an actor. What they turned him into by the end of the movie is a huge joke, and in no way shape or form like the original Mandarin. The comic book Mandarin uses magic as well by the use of 10 rings. There is a very large back story behind the character, which seems to have just been thrown out the window for Iron Man 3.

Thank you for this. I remember either disliking or being ambivalent about many of these movies (especially Avatar, which IMO is really just Dances With Wolves on another planet) when I watched them, and not understanding why all the accolades. Glad to hear someone agrees with me.

Spider-Man Raimi trilogy too; These movies are extremely cheesy and have poor dialogue and scenes like the one atheist guy going to church just to pray to Jesus to KILL Peter Parker in the 3rd movie and Kirsten Dunst is terrible in these movies all she does is scream and shout and is just being saved all the time.

uhm, spirited away wasnt the only successful one, naussica was the one that started ghibli, then there was castle in the sky and grave of fireflies. Infact they did produce one sequel, but it was stand alone. You know the film Whisper of the Heart? The sequel was The Cat Returns

I liked gravity because of how close it came to realistic.. There were definitely some bad physics (as mentioned by neil degrasse tyson) but most of it was spot on.

Return of the Jedi, maybe? The movie gets so much love from fans just because it's one of the originals. It's actually pretty flawed.

boostbomb500 Games Agreed. As someone who grew up during the second golden age of disney(89-97), comparing this to most of those and it falls way flat. It was also one of the first disney animated movies that did not feature a song i like or could at least recognize as being good.

I think this is the case for alot of these films. Maybe at the time of running the were seemed great and people liked them, but after a while people just didnt care about them anymore. So when you mention one of these films and cite all their awards and such, a person today might say, yeah it was good but it didnt transcend or hold up well today even if it has all those wards telling me I should praise it. I think thats the case for some of them.

I've never seen Gravity, avatar has to be one the most overrated fucking in the last 5yrs. I saw it on Christmas in theaera and fucking fell asleep. The movie was the Ferngully film from 1993, which was childhood favorite of mind. Which to me is bad, if a film can remind of something that long ago.

The technology behind it was amazing for the time.
If you were to try to release Avatar *now* however, where the technology is pretty commonplace and all, I'm more than certain it would be nowhere near as popular as it was back in 09. That's why I doubt the sequels will be nearly as successful as the first one was now that we've already had our taste of it unless the actual plot is good. The plot of Avatar was just a typical preachy environmental message covered in a "military vs. indigenous population" story that we've seen for decades.
Nothing original or groundbreaking otherwise *except* the technology that was used to create it.

To be honest, in recent years, if you see there, almost all Oscar nominated feature films which directed by or given major role to afro-american man/woman should be either about racism or slavery or LGBTQ. I think that happens bc the Oscars choose to nominate those films. The Oscars have standards to African American filmmakers and filmmakers of color to give films that are centered on race and mostly feature a white savior narrative that make Oscar voters feel good. They rarely nominate films by black and Asian filmmakers that don’t feature white savior narratives, are artistically exceptional and some cases groundbreaking and truly challenge the status quo of race relations to the point that it has the largely white older Oscar voters question their privileges. Overall for both black filmmakers and filmmakers of color overall for the past decade based on best picture nominations, life of pai, parasite, moonlight, fences, get out and black panther are the only expectation which compared to the other films of the decade that focused on race and featured white savior narratives is sadly a rarity

The first few months of Frozen's release, I was told by just about everyone that it was the best Disney film of all time. I of course didn't believe them, (mainly because I had only seen that first trailer which didn't represent the movie in any way). So in February of 2014 I finally manned up and watched it, expecting to hate it. And the rest...well you know the rest.

Gravity can't even get things right. An astronaut will only commit suicide as a LAST RESORT! Neil Degrasse Tyson actually debunked the movie, and said that both astronauts could have gotten into the space station if the pulled back and forth. Besides that they make it horribly depressing to try to make me feel sorry for Ryan. With stuff like, My child got killed, my parents were idiots and gave me a boy's name, and someone I had a crush on just committed suicide to save me. And why do they keep putting her in these life risking situations? What are the chances all of these events would take place in ORDER? And besides that most of the movie is just Ryan flying through space screaming. And even though it wasn't a horror movie they needed to add a cheap ass jump scare. "Good movie" I think not.
