  • Caga Tió is a particular Catalan Christmas tradition. It's about a log that poops presents on December 24th. I've been asked a lot of times how does Caga Tió work, so I decided to make a video.
I hope you like it and it helps to understand a little bit more our weird, but great traditions.

Beating a log under a blanket with a stick while singing is not a thing I would do every day but its pretty cool to see how different their tradition is different than ours.

Porque desconoces la historia que hay detrás de esta costumbre. Es muy bella.

Good video and good explanation Alba!! I only want to let the visitors of this page know that the name of this magic christmas log is "tió", not "caga tió". In catalan language, "tió" means "log". We make appear the "tió" at home by surprise days before christmas, children feed the log during advent, and finally, on december 24, we hit it while we sing a song, in order to make it poop us presents, traditionally sweets. Kids love it!! We call that christmas ceremony "Fer cagar el tió", that is to help the tió "to poop". "Cagar" means, in catalan language, to poop. That is why some people us the word "Caga tió" to define that ceremony.... and finally the log. But the correct name of this log is "tió".

@@LuisSanchez-xc9ih that's the thing, It fools kids that are young enough.
Patents can figure a way to sell this bit to children, until they grow too old.
In our home we were taken out of the room to practice the song (since each time we would change It Up a little bit).
Meanwhile, our parents and uncles would hide the presents under the blanket.
I remember feeling the whole thing was sketchy for a couple years, until one day I sneaked in the room and saw my uncle hiding a present. It was confirmation for something I already guessed, but hey, It was still fun and I got presents so I didn't complain.

Leave the room and turn on a faucet so kids can't hear or see the adults placing gifts under log😂

It is a catalan tradition, normally kids hit the stick while adults take them to sing songs and pray while others hid presents under the blanket. The kids lift it up to be surprises with presents. It is a really nice tradition, nothing to be ashamed of and full of tenderness.i never had ut as a kid and whish i did, although my parents are catalan. So now i make sure my kids enjoy it. Even adults do!

This is a pre- christian tradition, when Nature ruled. So for the purposes of this tradition, no there is only a log.
