Omg i love this it's so funny. As a catalan, i never realized this tradition was so weird until i started telling it to people from other countries. We also put the caganer, a shepherd pooping in our pessebre (christmas display). Catalans love poop-related things! Visca Catalunya!

Well, as Catalan I see this explanation and... yes... it's a little bit weird. I suppose this was the point. But cagatio has magic for toddlers and kids, this is the true!
It comes every year at your door, from the forest, weeks before Christmas, and you need to feed it everyday (an as an adult is so wonderful the emotion of a kid when they check that the dish is empty!). The night of Christmas all the people sings meanwhile the young ones hit it with a stick (yes, weird) and then... under the blanket... gifts!!! It's pure joy :)
and for you is normal to hit him with "sticks"? To teach that to kids? No thanks...

My mom is from Catalonia and i'm living in Catalonia, and i used to do this when i was a child with my mom, and now i realise that every christmas i've benn asking to a piece of wood to poop sweet stuff for me...hahahahaha Anyways i'm proud of my roots! Love ya Kate!

You don’t open him up, you simply put leftovers in a bol and the next morning they are suppose to be gone since Tió ate them overnight. And it’s called the Christmas log (tió de nadal), most kids go to the forest to find them (I just buy it from the store lol) and some years ago the tradition was to burn it after Christmas and spread it’s magical ashes around the house for good luck.

The song for the "Caga tió" she refers to is this one. Just to be clear, for those who don't know, the song is in Catalan, the language of the Catalunya region (Barcelona is the capital), which is one of the many languages of Spain.

@@NoHeLy1111 they are not mocking it, the Christmas tió tradition is funny and strange, and that's what makes people laugh and comment it in a humorous setting. Heck, i know people that have never been in a catalan speaking country and they have adopted the tradition after knowing someone, i also have heard from a member of a US laboratory that in the past had 2 catalans working there and thanks to them they adopted the tradition, now they are no longer working there but the workers are keeping the tradition, feeding it and make the tió poop in christmas.
Catalonia could be the Portland of the world.
As a catalan I can confirm we do in fact hit a log until it poops candy and presents xd, although its name is just Tió, not CagaTió, but doesn't really matter that much :)

hahahaha!! as a Catalan... can only laugh. It DOES sound funny when I explain about this to my friends abroad :-DBut it was fun, and it was nice to take care of the log, feed it, try to spy on it to see when it eats (the thing does not open neither you put food INSIDE, just in front of it on a plate, and it eats ;-)), and be amazed when all those presents and chocolate were pooped :-D We tried to do it when we were older with my parents and my sister and we could only laugh. It did feel ridiculous. But well, other's go around dressed up like zombies or monsters on a certain night, for what it's worth :P
We've done this at home for years. Of course you do this when you are a child. Now we just give presents without the ceremony.

This tradition is addressed, normally,to children. They have one even at school. But not everybody has a cagatió for Christmas. But if we have add Halloween to our celebrations.....they can also celebrate cagatió, why not

Well, David Lynch already tried to introduce this "peculiar" Catalan tradition in his series Twin Peaks. Remember the Log Lady? The thing is, the producers never saw the time to let the lady enlighten Agent Cooper and Sheriff Truman about this delightful custom. They said that the North American public was not prepared for this filth, no matter how traditional it was in other latitudes.
Its name is "Tió" (timber, in Catalan), not "Cagatió".

"Caga tió" (poop log) and "caganers" (poop man figure) are catalan 100% . In a philosophical way, it's such a representation of returning to the Earth what it gave us :)
