What it was like to euthanize my greyhound

  • This video is going to show the full euthanasia process. You will see my dog die in this video. I am sharing this for education purposes. A big fear of mine when adopting a dog was what the end would look like. And when that moment sadly came for my Mac, it was so different than I thought.
A big thank you to my wonderful vet and vet tech. They spent an hour with my mom, me and Mac making sure we were comfortable with every step of the process.
RIP my sweet greyhound Mac 💜

So sorry for your loss. Mac seemed like a lovely dog and was a great greyhound ambassador. Thanks for sharing this video. I can only imagine how tough it was to make and edit. It is an important subject to cover, as it is rarely talked about. The video was also very respectful, so thank you once again for sharing.

Found this video by chance and decided to watch it for the sake of processing my own dog’s passing. His was very peaceful too, but I wish I had the time to mourn him a moment longer afterwards. See, I had to drive him myself to a crematorium, and needed to arrive before the facility closed. Aside from that, everything was perfect. He was basking in the sun out on the yard when the vet came over. It was like any other day for him. I know it’s not an option for everybody, but if you can, I can’t recommend enough to have the euthanasia done at home, especially if the dog gets anxious at the vet. He was just happy a guest came over who gave a lot of pats while he was being lazy on his bed out.

My little girl missy (a grey) hated the vet and yes just a couple of weeks ago had to be put down, we went for him just to avoid the stress of the vet. I am so glad we did because on that last day her legs gave up working all together anyway and there was no way the headspace i was in was i going to be able to get her stressing into a vet which would have caused her more stress

We have just said goodbye two days ago to our beautiful Grey boy Will. It was time for him; we cuddled and told him we loved him, over and over until the end of the process.
Hoping you are feeling better; it's rough. We have cried buckets of tears.
    Take care🌻🌻🌻

Thank you so much for sharing. I had to go through this twice once with my 16yr old blue nosed Pittie and second with my almost 12yr old Harlequin Great Dane. It’s the hardest yet most responsible part of being an animal owner. When I read about owners dropping off their elder dogs at a shelter because they just “can’t deal/face” putting them down I get so upset. Your animals give you all of themselves and I’ll never understand letting them die around strangers in such scary and unfamiliar surroundings.

We had to say goodbye to our 3rd greyhound a few weeks ago, it’s very hard. They ask so little of us (except food, treats, hugs, toys, attention, kisses, playtime, time to sniff every single post/tree, staring time, kiddie pool, a yard to run, scratches, belly rubs and cheese) yet they give so much. One way we deal with grief is we make a hard cover photo book from snap fish. Sorry for your loss.

I just put down my dog of 15 years. My heart, is broken right now, and it's my birthday. It seems like life will never be the same, but it will get better once your fur companion is up in the sky and feeling free of pain. My dog was named Kingsley, he was a red nose pit. He filled my heart with so much joy and laughter. He was around when my life was tough, and I was being bullied in high school. After a long day of school I would come home, and he would be waiting at the window barking on the couch. That dog, just wanted to be loved and cuddled that was it. He was a rescue and suffered from Parvo twice.

Your calm bravery is inspiring, you kept Mac feeling safe until she passed and I only hope, when that day comes, I can keep it together half as well. You are so strong in the room. I recently just lost my beloved bichon toy poodle on Tuesday and it was very hard. She had a mass cell tumor that the doctor couldnt remove all and came back. I took her to the vet and the doctor said she would have about 4 months but I didnt want to believe it and at the same time I knew I had to prepare myself just in case. And youre right I can see it in her eye which she was blind on the left but I can tell the happiness and joy of my precious little baby was not feeling well. Being the tough and fighter she was she held on. She went on those walks still granted they werent as long as when she was healthy but she still went and enjoyed every bit of it going potty and pooing every time we went out. I fed her well. Let her eat whatever she wanted like human food which she loves and at times I would give her a little just because I couldnt turn down her cute little face. The mass tumor came back after it was removed right around 4 months and it hit her. It hit her hard and fast. Within 4 days the tumor grew and swelled to the point my baby girl had a stroke on the very last day and I held her and took her in the next morning and let her free. Im glad I made the decision to let her just live and spent as much time with her as possible before she went. Its been 4 days now and its gotten a little better but I still break down and cry each day. Going through my day and our regular routine and her not being there in the morning to take her out. Not being there when it was time for breakfast and her hanging around the kitchen waiting for mommy to feed her and the occasionally stepping of tripping over her because she was so excited to eat that she would follow you like shes your shadow. LOL. As the time past we look at pictures and videos of her and we talk about the good times she shared with us and laugh it helps us a little bit to move forward. I talk to her still everyday because we brought her home and burried her in our backyard. I still say good morning and hi to her when I wake up for work and when I drive by her in my car to work. It might sound like Im a crazy person but its helping me heal know I can still talk with her. Boy I am going on and on saying so much here. Now our baby Gidget can go and find your Mac. Take care and bless your little heart.

You were brave to make that video and I think it is going to help many people. So sorry that Mac had to leave you. We often think it will be impossible to know when it is their time, but in my experience when we love our dogs we just know. Regardless of co-dependency issues a loving owner will naturally find the strength to put the dog's needs first. It helps to make a list of all the things your dog loved doing when they were young and healthy; then you can see how much of a struggle the dog must be facing in the now. Better a week too soon than a day too late.

In my 55 years of life I’ve had to make the decision too many times . It never gets easier. It’s difficult for some to understand what your pets mean to you they’re family members and an important part of your everyday existence. Going on without them leaves a big hole where they used to be.

So sorry to hear about Mac. I went through the same process with my previous dog. It was so hard, but Sascha’s cancer progressed where she couldn’t even get up, so I knew it was the right thing for her. Afterwards, it was so quick and seemingly painless that I felt some comfort. Hi Steph
    Thanks for making the video.
I currently have a 13 year old dog who has been suffering from canine cognitive dysfunction since last October when we got him diagnosed. He can no longer walk but is still eating and drinking (needs assisted feeding and help with urination of course). He also has daily episodes of crying/panting which we try to use medication to help but thats about it and at the end of the day his quality of life has diminished. Funny thing is that he always recognizes my voice and lifts his head when we call for him. I'm trying to come to terms with the decision but 70% is leaning towards euthanasia when I came across your video.
It was very heart breaking to see and I just can't imagine what it would be like if it was my dogs turn.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I euthanized one Ibizan Hound last year for cancer, and another this year for several complications of old age. The second dog had become panicky at the vets, so I had an in-home service come. The vets in both cases did wonderful jobs, and both dogs passed without pain or fear. I appreciate you posting this to share with people. The process can be very peaceful. At the same time, losing them has been much more painful than I even expected. I think part of that is that we lose some aspects of them before they're gone. And then when they're gone, our lives are forever split into "before" and "after."

Thank you for sharing such an intimate video with us. My toy poodle that grew up with me suffered so much during the last 2 years of his life: Dimensia, muscle wasting, periodontitis, loss of sight and hearing, bladder and bowel dysfunction. Time spent with him turned from happiness to agony. I cannot remember how many times I had an breakdown, feeling so sorry and tired. But euthanasia never came up to my mind. I couldn’t let go. Now looking back, maybe euthanasia is the better way. He lost interest in everything and wasn’t happy at all…
Recently my boyfriend and I adopted a 4 -year-old greyhound. The fear of not having his company long enough is still behind my mind. But I now have more courage to face the brutal fact and hopefully in the future able to make the best decision for our pup.

Dear Steph, I am so sorry about MAC-she was beautiful!! It is so difficult, I am 78 years old and have lost several pets, but would do it all over again. They give us so much. I wish you peace in your future. I have a 13-year old greyhound, and my Striker has the same coloring as MAC. ❤❤❤ much love to you and Tosh, from Jean.

Can I ask why you put her down.. Did she have a health issue that was terminal?
Yes I cried as my dog is 10 years old now and I am not sure if I can handle this part when it comes time. My dog Jesse lets me know when I’m having a panic attack and i don’t feel whole without her. Dogs can be the most incredible sentient beings.
Living with CPTSD is really hard so thank you for sharing this video. It was hard to watch but deep down inside myself it will help me when the time comes.

What made you decide it was time? A certain diagnosis, short term or long term? I always struggle with am I waiting to long or maybe not long enough because you naturally don’t want your beloved fur baby to suffer.

I can’t watch this though I’m afraid as over the years I’ve had to say goodbye to five beautiful greyhounds I’ve been privileged to share their lives with. It’s incredibly hard to do but any animal that is suffering needs to be cared for even if that means ending their life humanely.

I lost my beautiful brindle boy greyhound 7 months ago, bone cancer. The worst feeling ever. I never left his side. I have a other that looks just like yours. He has to have surgery because of a suspicious growth. I don't want to lose him too😢😢😢

Really struggled with this. We just had an Alpaca give us a surpise Cria. Little Meela survived 4 days. He had chellenges from birth and he fell in our dam - which he survived but inhaled water. He was euthanized a day later.
