As a owner and user of six antique draw knives, I actually prefer my adjustable 10" whitherby. I use mine mostly for peeling logs and depending on the size of the logs I adjust my handle accordingly. For big logs I like the handles out wide and for smaller ones 90°. If you can only afford one draw knife that's the one I would get.

I just bought a 10 inch drawknife and I had no idea about the welded high carbon steel tip, I'm going to check it out in the morning. My handles are loose and one is actually off but that's ok because I have some black Walnut I would like to make new ones out of. I have a strange obsession with making my own handles for everything but I will check that blade to make sure I'm not wasting my time. Thank you for the helpful info. Subscribed

I love antique tools and have both an antique draw knife and an old spoke shave. I’m not sure who made my draw knife there are no markings on it, but it does have a fuller and lamination line. Both work great. Thanks. Not many videos on such great tools. 7:18
DUDE!!! I HAVE A WETHERBY!!! 1838, BUFFALO NEW YORK! The scripting is partially unreadable and ive been trying to identify it since i was 16. I thought for sure it has a walnut handle set. Its real dark brown but o suppose maple from that era could fade. It cuts like brand new. The only problem is two chips on the left side. I cant really decide if i want to sharpen it. I am going to clean it up though. That knife is one of my most prized possesions. An old frind gave it to me when i was 14 before he passed a couple years later. Im 32 now. And have built a great many archery equipment with it. Thats so cool, i always really wanted to know.
I know this is quite late to the game, but if it transfers over from chisels the reason for the hollow ground/fuller is to aide in sharpening, it allows you to sharpen quicker by needing to remove less material. This in turn meant more time being "productive" or making the product. Hope that helps and gives a little insight - this is just what I learned (and experienced) with stock working in gunsmithing.

Hi, so I have a 10" solid all one PC metal(steel?) very old no damage to blade however my neighbor " borrowed" & When it was magically returned well it no longer has any wooden handles & of course everyone claims it's always been like that 🤬 so I'd like to know what or how to fix it really is a beautiful tool someone should give it the attention it deserves I hate to see an old tool rust ya know...any suggestions???

personally, I have an adjustable handled draw knif as it was the only used one I could find that wasn't sharened beyond the hardened steel. I have no problem with the handles at all. I see the adjustable handles as a means of fitting the tool to the user. Second point, and a little question, maybe my drawknife is "too sharp"? If I handled my drawknife like Liam did (picking it up with my thumb on the blade's edge) it would have lacerated my thumb quite deeply. Liam, can a drawknife be too sharp?

Lie-Nielsen and Barr Tools make good draw knives. The L-N is O1 steel in the Witherby design.
95% of my tools are second hand pre ww2 that I got nice and cheap.

Deep blade eg 2 inches or more means more contact with wood surface and more stability control too

How do you sharpen to a convex edge? Are you using a belt grinder?
