Also wise to keep backups at different location in case the house burnt down, or some other disaster. My personal method is to initially do my image selection after importing from SD card to SSD before reformatting SD card - I select my best images for editing using Fast Raw Viewer and then import those into Lightroom CC. Those images are then in Adobe Cloud and come through sync to Lightroom Classic and are automatically saved to hard drive and Lightroom catalog. I now have copy of my best images in Cloud, on hard drive and SSD (as part of complete shoot). So they are really secure. If my house burnt down they would still be in cloud, and an added advantage is that I can in addition to editing in Lightroom Classic, alternatively edit on my iPad or iPhone using Lightroom mobile any time I have time to spare while out and about.
Thanks. Some points for my workflow. I already back my catalogue up to an external HD that my photos are on and keep the original on my laptop. Need to find an easier way to back up photos and your way looks easier.
Great information. I have seen several videos on backing up catalogs but not a one on how to restore a catalog onto a new hard drive or new computer. What do ya think about doing one?
Best to transfer to an external hard drive. But if you want still want it on your main drive, just copy the folder that has everything. (Catalog, folder of images everything) and just copy that over.
Great suggestion. I have seen many people keep their back up drive in their laptop case. Best to keep it in a fire proof safe, separate room or at the office,
HI Marc, if you are using something like Super Duper - when you make the latest back up - it will only need to back up the changes. So it goes pretty fast. Most back up softwares do that, but check to be sure.
Thank you Terry but isn’t this double type of backup only necessary if you import pictures directly from your cameras SD card into Lightroom? I appreciate that you as a professional have thousands of pictures and as you said you don’t want to pay for cloud storage but in my case and possibly lots of others my workflow is, load the SD card onto my 2TB Sandisk SSD, import the pictures I want into the Photo App and then some/all into Lightroom and Develop as necessary. The pictures are saved onto the Cloud automatically. So I would have the photos saved onto the cloud, my SSD and also the original SD card (unless I reformat it) but SD cards are so cheap that I tend to buy another one or two. Accepting I am not a professional so I don’t have to buy too many.
HI David, there are many ways to keep your images safe. One of the worst ways to “save” images is holding them on an SD cards. It is a very fragile medium. Sound like you are going about it the right way. If you save your images in two places (hard drive and cloud, two hard drives, raid) then you can comfortably format your SD or camera cards,
Unfortunately, the Lightroom catalog backup does not backup things like presets, and any other variables that you have added to the program. Adobe hides these "all over the place", in the library, etc. if you don't also back those up, you will have lost them if your computer goes down.
Hi. Just read your comment and I am in the process of seeking a backup software for just that reason. What is/are your software solutions/recommendations you have used for this purpose. There are SO MANY to choose from.
Thanks for this excellent video, with options for backups. Just what I needed to know.
Glad it was helpful Sue. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for this clear explanation👍
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Terry, I really appreciate your videos.
Thanks for watching!

Excellent idea a to keep a copied drive off site. Thanks for watching.

Easier is better, but ANY backup is a good idea. Thanks for watching.

I’ll work on that.
Very useful information. I just got a new MacBook. How do I transfer my Lightroom Classic catalog to new laptop? Thanks

Nice Terry. May I suggest to also keep a full copy off location, outside your workplace or home?

Vey important info Terry Vander Heiden
Thank you Sanjay!
A backup is made. Subsequently, images are edited, deleted, etc. Are these changes reflected in the next backup?

How long should you keep the backup copies of Lightroom catalog if you back up the catalog every week or so?
I'd keep them for about 4 weeks. You wouldn't need them longer than that if your backing up every week.

That is one of the reasons I’m partial to backing up the entire catalog and images together. Never had a problem doing it that way.
Back ups that don’t occur automatically are no good. You need a program that will back up every time there’s a change.
I would say that ANY backup is a good thing.
