Gordon is NOTORIOUS known for being tough and brutally honest. He's gone on record using "Special Snowflakes" unironically. He's gone on record saying he feels that hardship brings out the best in people. Gordon is Old School.
You have to expect Gordon to be a hardass. To be BRUTALLY honest. Even to do something unepected like this as a test. This is a man who understands, ESPECIALLY from Kitchen Nightmares, that looks alone are MEANINGLESS.
This isn't Bobby Flay or Guy or any other Softie or "Cool" guys. This is Old School Hardass Brutally Honest Trial By Fire Gordon Ramsey. By working for/with him, you consent to that treatment. It might suck. I don't fully agree with how harsh he was, but he was right in having that as a test. Sycophants have NO business being Professional Chefs, or training to be ones. People who can't or won't think for themselves, have no business training under Gordon.

Even when Gordon went abroad to study new recipes and study with even chefs and cooks you won’t even know about since they’re not famous (Gordon Ramsay’s channel uploaded several of these videos), they told him which area he is lacking and they told him that very bluntly. The man is humble enough to accept correction when needed. And the contestants need to have enough bravery to tell the truth, since in their line of work, it could determine whether a restaurant will stay afloat or not.

You see Gordon get angry about shitty food in this and in things like Kitchen Nightmares, but it's not because it's just shit food, it's because it doesn't meet the expectations.
For Hell's Kitchen, he's got a job opening for the "best of the best" of world class chefs, anything less than perfect isn't good in this case.
For Kitchen Nightmares (and hotel hell) it's not so much about the food (sometimes it is, with serving moldy food or keeping raw and cooked food together, obviously bad things) as it is about the expectations. If you go to a Greek restaurant that claims to be authentic (and charges "authentic" prices), Gordon's not going to be happy if he finds out it's cheap frozen crap. There's a time and a place for everything.

I’d like to think Gordon couldn’t be fooled with a prank like this, who knows. I know he can identify 4 different ingredients in a blind taste test, whereas chefs on the show struggle to identify one.
This just proves that you can take just about any set if ingredients and make wonderful dishes.

I remember in my music psychology class in the summer my teacher puts an example and put 2 different versions of the same piece and the class said song A and song B they tried to be all technical and being a smart ass and then I said it’s the exact same song you’re just playing a trick on us and people hated that and my teacher said I was right and the look on their faces were priceless 😂👏🏻best day ever. It was the 1st day of summer class I laughed my ass off I'm like how trained music failed and me as a self taught Learner knew the teacher was bullshitting us. Well, it’s a lot more than that. Sure, these cooks didn’t notice the ingredients and their pallets have some work to do, but that’s exactly what Ramsay’s trying to convey. Also, if you have one of the most esteemed chefs in the world present to you food he said he made, how in the world are you going to say there’s something wrong or criticize. I feel your statement was reckless in that you fell into hindsight bias, but I somewhat agree. Most of the cooks in this season weren’t good to say the least. But we should all try to stray from generalizations. :)
Yeah expanding on what Dubba said; do you seriously think Heather's reaction was genuine? Every time it cut to her, she looked uncomfortable and was smelling the food and shit as if almost saying "is this for real? am I missing something" which clearly she was. Virginia and Garret for sure got punked but I wouldn't exactly call them "regular people" and that none of them deserve to win.
Adding on to the others it's not like they were going to say that the food was shit when they thought that Gordon had made it and he was sitting right next to them, you could definitely tell that Heather new something was off but wasn't going to say that one of the best cooks in the world's food tasted like a t.v. dinner. And this is why I laugh at pompous chefs who ramble on about “top tier ingredients”. A good meal can be prepared with any ingredients of almost any tier (I draw the line at rotten/spoiled for health reason). It is how you prepare them and recognizing how the flavors blend together.

I love that Gordon assumes they can't taste and thats why they didn't insult his cooking. I believe the guy who loves hotdogs because who doesn't, the rest were being polite and in typical Ramsay tradition rather than see that they were being incredibly polite to him, he turns around and is incredibly rude to them. Personally I'd rather eat my shitty cooking for the rest of my life than put up with his attitude for a single evening. I have never had any of his food but I imagine after talking to him for a minute or two it taste like asshole.
