I was in instructor for over 15 years, and I still have a few interns in the shop every once in a while. Thanks for the kind words, and Happy New Years down under.

Crazy. Every time I have a question there's a costa mesa R&D vid with the answer. That's really awesome John. SUBSCRIIIBED!!

John your machine shop practices are always well explained and shown , did you ever think about being a teacher? and thanks for another great clip.

@benthekahn - I have mounted flywheels on my lathe and used a tool post grinder to machine them.

@fiatnutz that explains your fluent explanations. you should do tips and how to's more often, altough everybody loves your machining videos. just gives you feeling like you are talking to your machines not just using them ;) cheers!

Please educate me on something, is flywheel and disc the same thin and if not do they need to be resurfaced????

Don't know, I've nver been put inside an envelope before. ;-) But, if you are asking if we get things shipped to us for repair, yes all the time.

Could a fixture be made to do this with a grinding stone and lathe, essentially rotating your machines setup 90 degrees?

Does grinding the flywheel to resurface lighten it in any noticeable way that would increase performance?

    Hi Sir,
When I see grinding process I notice one side of the cup wheel is in contact with surface. Is there angle at rotary head? How you dress cup wheel ? All surface of cup touches to surface or only tip of the cup touches. Thank you

I had a pothole flywheel and I grinded to make it a flat one (like the one on the vid),so I can attach a different preassure plate and clutch.Anyways, after I did so,should I balance it again? Right now,the flywheel is just a solid disc... (like the one you just did in the video),so I'm wondering if I should... some people say yes, other say no... I don't know what's right

Hi John, When buying a used flywheel, would i need to resurface and balance? Also, can you break down the approx costs for each svc?
Thanks alot for any info and superb vids.

I'd imagine that very large flywheels have been ground on VTLs using a special ram attachment.

In the absence of a grinder like yours is it not feasible to do this in a vertical milling machine with a rotary table and a suitable she'll mill with either carbide or boron nitride inserts? I understand the reasons for using a mill over a lathe but I do not have a dedicated flywheel grinder like you have. As an un preferred option could a cup wheel be mounted on a suitable arbor and used at a fast speed in the mill? Not keen as don't want the abrasive dust getting on my ways but extra masking procedures could be carried out. Thanks for such interesting videos John. Your lovely little Fiat would be perfect for racing up my local hill climb track, Gurston Down. We have a great web site and photo archive if you get a minute.

@ribak1983 I would rather have a reground flywheel simply because even from the factory they can be out a thousandth or two. Some people have brand new flywheels that are out quite a bit from the box.

that was pretty interesting to see. This is the first of its kind for me, I didn't even consider this kind of machine, but it is cool. A bit niche.. Is there a big market for this kind of grinding job?

for a machine shop maybe nothing less/// maybe a busy parts store. i would turn maybe 4 a month in the winter.. 2-3 a day in summer in denver and charged 50$ a flywheel and no one else offered to do it anywhere near me. it really is filthy worth you have to clean these machines often and you need a mask to run it or else you'll get that dust in your lungs ( and clutch material still uses asbestos )
i would use a diamond cut wheel ive had too many of those stone ones blow up
