There's something iconic about it. Feel I have a personal bias that the first game I fell in love with was an F1 game on the N64, the first track of the season being the Australian Grand Prix. I took so much time learning every corner and every breaking point. Has a lovely flow to it. It absolutely deserves to be the opening race of the calendar. I feel a bit of shine is taken off the opening weekend these days with it not being hosted in a "fan friendly" location tbh. Just feels like the sport sold out
Same with me. I had the demo version of F1 2002 and it only had the Albert Park circuit. I did loads of laps on it to improve my driving on that circuit. I have thus grown to love that circuit and it brings back nostalgic feeling of my childhood.
When I was young, I was able to hear the screaming V10 engines from my house. The V8s were a bit harder to hear if it was a busy day. When they changed to turbo hybrids, it ruined some of the experience for me. The insane noises when F1 came to town were part of the city's character.
But if they were still running v10’s people would protest in the street “tHErEs nO pLaNeT B “ or invade the track like Silverstone last year etc. etc. 🤷♂️ guarantee it
Love Albert Park. Wish it was still the first race where I could wake up early, super excited for it. Interesting comparison with Montreal, which I also love and I think you've nailed it with them not really feeling like street tracks. They are both a perfect middle ground in my opinion.
I don't really consider CGV to be a street track. It's really more of a racetrack that just happens to be open to the public when there's no racing going on (the roads in question were designed specifically to be used for racing, rather than just existing roads that get adapted to a race). It's quite possible the same could be said for Albert Park, but I don't know the background on AB as well as I do for CGV.
It will be the first race again in 2025. They had it in their contract that between 2023-37 they would host the opener at least 4 times. Saudi Arabia will host the opener in 2024, nd then it will be Alber Park's turn in 2025.
The fact that Canada and Australia make you feel in a true circuit and not in a street circuit is the best brother. You can get to feel a true circuit without leaving the city
It has huge nostalgic appeal to me. I remember getting up in 6:30 in the morning to watch the season start. But ever since Bahrain became first race, it lost it's biggest appeal. I still don't hate it, though.
I don't necessarily think the Albert Park circuit is a bad track, we've seen some amazing overtakes on that track over the years! Although I have noticed when watching live that the field does seem to spread out very quickly over the space of a first few laps.
Albert Park and Sakhir both are among my favourites on the calendar genuinely, and in games, happy with either starting the season but Aus just edges it. Much love to the Melbourne circuit and to all

If I'm being brutally honest the track is mid af for racing like one proper overtake for the lead in the history of the track level of mid. Also it got carried a lot for being the first race of the season but I feel like the atmosphere is always great and it's definietly on my bucket list of F1 races
Wait, someone actually dislikes Albert Park? It has hosted so many iconic races throughout the years, 1999 AusGP is probably one of my favourite races ever
Well. When was the last great race at Melbourne? 2010 imo. While it was the season opener, it always got a certain bonus as excitement rises for the season. But if you only think of the races themselves, they were not that great tbh
I watched a poll here in youtube with almost 200k votes that said that more than 50% of the fans have watched less than 5 years of F1 and almost 75% have watched less than 10. Not to disrespect them but most of the people commenting have no idea what Albert Park is all about
I've gone to Melbourne and Singapore for the f1 last year. Albert park perfect to get signatures and photos and if get the right spot to watch amazing spectacle, bad stop not that enjoyable, wayyy to crowded aswell. However with Singapore heaps of places where you can walk around the track and see the car fly past you less then a meter away and isn't busy whatsoever. on top of this there are massive concerts with Marshmellow, The Kid Laroi etc between sessions. That is why Singapore in my opinion is the best experience in f1 wthout spending big money and I'd suggest spending your money going to Singapore then Australia.
I’ve been to Interlagos so I know what a good track and race looks like. Yes, Albert Park doesn’t come near São Paulo in race quality but it certainly does so in event quality, vibe quality AND track quality too. It’s an interesting unique track in an interesting environment, on an awesome exciting weekend. Even though the racing is not the best, the overall quality of the Melbourne GP weekend is top tier for me. It’s one of the races I’d love to come to see live.
To be fair the only tracks that offer great racing consistently nowadays are Interlagos and Silverstone. So when that is the case the things you describe are much more relevant
@@96wtfomg yes, good racing makes a huge difference, but what I meant is even though Melbourne doesn’t deliver on that specific area, it delivers so thoroughly on everything else I fell it deserves a pass. Still not a match for actual good races indeed though
I don’t like it. I usually skip this race and watch the highlights because I know later in the season I’ll just forget about it. It’s way too forgettable. Hard to remember the last good race that happened here. They should remove it from the calendar.
I am Dutch, and I want to visit Australia one day. I hope I can combine it with the F1 race because it looks very cool. also everything around the track is very good. you have plenty of spaces and like you said you can see the drivers close. also the fact that not that many people visit it (compared to silverstone, Spa etc etc) there are still a lot of people but not as extremely crowded like some other races can be (I have been to spa, nurnbergring and spain and all those were crowded.)
I like the Aus GP. It's not easy to overtake but not impossible. Every pass is well earned. And it's one of the tracks with actual grass and gravel which is a plus. If there's any issue it's that the F1 cars are too large these days
Nah mate, we both know that during Jan/Feb, the tennis is a big thing down in Melb too. It's such a big thing that they have specialised public transport services to get you to the events.
Cool video. The cars are the problem these days. They’re sadly just too big. One of the other reasons Albert Park doesn’t look like a street circuit is the proximity of house and buildings to the track and the absence of 90 degree turns.
You know it's weird, historically for most of its existence, Albert Park has been the opener of the season. Its not the 'main course', its more like a 'starter' dish at a restaurant. Its not the best thing in the world but its not meant to be. Its competitive enough to where the winner isn't etched in and there can be some unpredictability. But it's simple enough to where it doesn't overshadow most of the races yet to come. Albert Park will never be the best circuit on the calendar, but it will also never be the worst. It is solidly good.
If the racing gets worse the only thing Albert Park needs is a hairpin chicane type bunch of turns at what would be turn 4 like they have at the Foro Do Sol Stadium section at the Mexican 🇲🇽 GP. That would really break up the momentum of the tracks pace and add some excitement if a driver goes for a lunge or 2 drivers have a scuff and then another comes up to overtake them both etc. etc. (Also probably a great VIP ticket 🎫 opportunity to capitalise on too. - more people can see them if they slow down at that turn. Idk )
Would it be feasible for them to alternate between Adelaide and Albert park? I enjoyed it when Germany would alternate between Hockenheim and Nurburgring.
There's really no reason to ever drive around Albert Park unless you're going to MSAC or you want a scenic drive. Similar for Gilles Villeneuve. For me, they're race tracks that you can drive around when there's no race going on.
Google Maps directs me to duck through there every now and then as a way to get into the city centre. It might not happen often, but I'm always glad when it does, as I like thinking about where I am on the circuit, even if I am going around it backwards.
I never understood the distaste some have for Albert Park. It's not Spa or Suzuka, but still a pretty good track in my view. I've always enjoyed the races there.
I don't like to judge a track based on how exciting the races are. Spa is possibly the best circuit and the races are Boring, Barcelona produces great Racing but still people hates the track... So i think that it's difficult to know if the fans like only the track or the venue in general
Terrible time for me on the US east coast, boring track/race, lost a lot of respect during Covid. It’s one of the first races I’d remove from the calendar.
My perception is that it’s a mid 6.5/10 grand prix. The surroundings are beautiful, but it doesn’t have iconic sections like other long-time-featured circuits do. Iconic moments aren’t wedged in the memory of long-time fans like some those at other similar circuits. However, the spectators are great and the whole atmosphere gives off good vibes, so the fact that it’s being kept on until 2035 is a win for Australia.
Unless Checo embraces the dark side and we get a Nico vs Lewis like season at Red Bull, every race will be boring this year. Those Red Bulls are wayyyyyy out in front, and Alonso getting 3rd can only be entertaining for so long.
honestly, it is a mid track with cars that keep getting bigger. People hold it in high regard because it used to an opener. Far from the worst track and still great to watch onboards, but it falls in the tracks i wouldn't mind being replaced.
Easily one of the best tracks on the calendar, but it really needs to go back to being the first race of the year. Similarly, either Interlagos or Suzuka need to go back to being the finale. Unfortunately these Middle Eastern countries and their mountains of money seem intent on ruining all that was once good (even if I like the Bahrain circuit)...
It would be much better racing if they chose Mount Panorama as the Australian GP, but as an event, Albert Park is far better. It's really close to the CBD and easy for any travellers to get to. There's lots to do after the race and outside of the circuit.
kamikaze kangaroos are just to unsafe in an open cockpit race cars. Even with the halo. That being said it would be the greatest Formula 1 race of all time.
Hell No, The Australian Grand Prix is one of my favorite races on the Calendar and Albert Park is one of my Favorite tracks. Australia needs to be the season opening race again
The cars seem to have outgrown the circuit somewhat. If we look at the late 90's thru the early 2010's we had some proper exciting Grand Prix here because there was more than one functional overtaking spot. Cars of today as amazing as they are barely small enough to fit on this circuit anymore. Not sure what the solution is.
Here what I would suggest. Start the Season in Australia and End it again in Australia. What do I mean by this, Start the Season in Albert Park and end the Season in Adelaide
Street circuits and today's F1 cars just don't mix well as far as good races go. The cars are too big and the tracks dont have long enough straights for good passing opportunities. The only exceptions are Baku and Montreal.
Calling Canada a street race is silly tbh (and I think Australia for similar reasons) Canada is a purpose built race track. The race track wasn’t some after thought that was built and had to fit into an existing environment, the man made island was built with the understanding a race track was going to go on it after the 1988 Olympics. Cars don’t daily drive on it. It’s mainly a pedal bike path when not a race track. Just when you have winters like Canada, you can’t really keep the thing open all year round. It has much more in common with permanent tracks than street circuits. It’s not even in the city lol On the topic of Albert Park. I enjoy it. Does it have some issues that may need to be addressed? Absolutely, but so do most tracks on the calendar. And I absolutely wouldn’t want to get rid of it off the calendar. Especially if that meant leaving Australia altogether, something would need to replace it in Australia. The people deserve a race.
Should have stayed the first race. It’s easy to drive and good start for the rookies the fans are great and it’s kinda lame to have a night race to start and night race in the Middle East to end it takes away from the feeling they go everywhere
Hello i know this track i like the new layout its more fun than the old one i will be going to Monaco i will have a photo with grand hotel hairpin in the background vacation photo as a tourist.
There is much to say for Melborne but Adelaide gave better races. And it gave a better opportunity to give the international gesture in the braking zone 😁
Personally I think Albert park is an amazing track it might even be the best street circuit but overall the racing is okay but not amazing it generally a good race.
It’s kind of annoying that the Victorian Government put in a little thing into their new contract that no other Aussie city could hold a 2nd race. I personally believe the OzGP belongs at Albert Park and quite frankly is the most profitable circuit in this country alone for ticket sales let’s say. But the fact that Adelaide could have bidded to have a 2nd last minute race there instead of the cancelled ChineseGP is really salty tbh. Good Deal for Melbourne but classic Victorians 🙄
Come on dude, I literally NEVER heard anyone say they dislike Australia race. Neither back then, not now after the changes; if anything I only see more and more people who push for Australia to be the season opener again. F1 in general is boring nowadays, it's not an Australia issue. A hated race is maybe Catalunya, Valencia, Abu Dhabi or Paul Ricard. Those are shit tracks
I disagree with the notion of The Melbourne GP being Australia’s greatest sporting event of the year. Don’t get me wrong I love it and it’s always exciting but I believe the Bathurst 1000 is far more exciting in every way. The build up and vibe of the whole weekend tops any year and dare I say any F1 race I’ve watched so far.
Last years gp with the exception of lap 1 was the most boring race I’ve seen since I started watching in 2018. Edit: guess spa 2021 was worse, but whatever
I f ing hate this race more than Monaco. My least favorite race of the year and its not even close. Sooooooo boring. Seriously, just look at the 2023 calendar and I dare you to find 3 race tracks that are worse than this (Monaco being the only other potentially imo).

There is much to say for Melborne but Adelaide gave better races. And it gave a better opportunity to give the international gesture in the braking zone 😁
Personally I think Albert park is an amazing track it might even be the best street circuit but overall the racing is okay but not amazing it generally a good race.
Still sad they dropped Adelaide but the organizers are only human after all.
If they didnt turn that turn into a straight it would have been better
It’s kind of annoying that the Victorian Government put in a little thing into their new contract that no other Aussie city could hold a 2nd race. I personally believe the OzGP belongs at Albert Park and quite frankly is the most profitable circuit in this country alone for ticket sales let’s say.
But the fact that Adelaide could have bidded to have a 2nd last minute race there instead of the cancelled ChineseGP is really salty tbh. Good Deal for Melbourne but classic Victorians 🙄
To keep it simple, great venue, below average circuit (in terms of racing)
It's hard to overtake here but beatiful around lake too many turns Adelaide were better
Well I think we need to redefine what street circuit is.
Baku is a street circuit albert park is not.
Monaco is a street circuit Jeddah isn't...
The track is great but the cars are too wide and long. 2010 was great when the cars were smaller
Australia deserves a better circuit. Beautiful city. Boring track, regardless of the sentimental attachment that many Aussies feel for it.
While I dont like the track very much, it should be kept for the Australian fans.
I feel like it being the season opener for a while gave it more credit than it probably deserved. It’s been a very mediocre race for years.
Sector 3 kills my lap time in the game, other than that it's a cool track
I disagree with the notion of The Melbourne GP being Australia’s greatest sporting event of the year. Don’t get me wrong I love it and it’s always exciting but I believe the Bathurst 1000 is far more exciting in every way. The build up and vibe of the whole weekend tops any year and dare I say any F1 race I’ve watched so far.
Will never understand how people hate the Australian GP but like Baku 💀
Just rewatch the races... Should explain itself
@@DoorTechnicianRick baku is more entertaining to watch
what? i never thought it was boring
Try Singapore or Japan this year
Last years gp with the exception of lap 1 was the most boring race I’ve seen since I started watching in 2018.
Edit: guess spa 2021 was worse, but whatever
I wonder where these fans are from who want to travel to the Australian GP. It’s simply too far.
I can't overtake anyone even on f1 22 it is so Hard to overtake
it should be the first race
I love Albert Park
I used to try to like it but I can’t kid myself anymore.. just so boring every year
F1 media like f1.
Alongside Barcelona Melbourne must to be made to work harder.
Australia and Spain should be axed.
Some one hates this track? Weird.
tbh it feels more boring than it is because us people in Europe are still half asleep
I f ing hate this race more than Monaco. My least favorite race of the year and its not even close. Sooooooo boring. Seriously, just look at the 2023 calendar and I dare you to find 3 race tracks that are worse than this (Monaco being the only other potentially imo).
It's a slightly better Monaco. Boring ahh race, but cool track and atmosphere.
What ever people say Albert Park is miles better than Monaco
Worst race on the calendar
Bring back Adelade, and make it the last race of the season.
Cars too big. That’s it.
