Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on TH-cam, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on TH-cam. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on TH-cam, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.

OMG! It's really hard to get anyone to react to this stunning album!
By the time this album came out, I was a hopeless Yes fan, and knew "The Yes Album", "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" albums, all 3, front to back. So, when I bought this album, the first time I played it, I was disappointed. I had gotten so DEPENDENT on Yes' absolute studio perfection, that at first, I could not see past the small imperfections in the live versions. But over about a year, with several more listens, I ended up absolutely LOVING "Yessongs", and it took its rightful place in my favorite live albums OAT.
    Thanks for doing this one!

This is my favorite reaction of yours, Shawn. I love your tears and energy and wish for a moment you were as old as I am. Progressive rock bands always delivered live. Yes is my favorite live band and Yessongs is one of the top five live albums ever. You're going to love the rest of the album, especially Perpetual Change, with one of my favorite guitar solos from Steve and some tasty drumming from Bill, whose only other appearance on this album is on Long Distance Runaround into The Fish, which is an absolute must-listen. Enjoy!

I became a fan of Stravinsky from my first 6 Yes concert intros. I was a Yes fan much earlier. So much of Yes music is based on classical music structure. A perfect fit and a perfect intro to Siberian Khatru. The Firebird Suite here is a tape of an orchestra.

I've been lucky and blessed to have attended 1300+ concerts since 1973. Seeing just about every band from ABBA to Zappa and most in between.
Saw Yes a total of 21 times during those years.
    You just experienced why.
Thank you Yes for being such a huge part of my life.
    Long live Yes.

The Firebird Suite was a recording and could tell when the band came on stage in the dark (the big yell). On the last note of the recording, Rick Wakeman played the first chords on the synthesiser and a spot light shone on him to start the set. What a great memory from 1971 or 72.

They used this opening on the Tourmato Tour too. At the point the crowd gets loud that was when the indoor arena lights went out and the band came out on the stage in the dark, got on their instruments and gradually took over from Firebird. Then when they start that awesome jam the lights come on. Just amazing. The perfect opening to their concerts.
By the way, there's a full version of Firebird Suite in the movie FANTASIA 2000 set to beautiful animation inspired by the Mt Saint Helens volcano eruption. Treat yourself to it someday.

The opening excerpt from the Firebird Suite is a recording they "sort-of" got permission to use to open their shows. Stravinsky's Firebird Suite is from the early 20th century and is one of the greatest ballets ever written. The fact that they loved Stravinsky's music impressed me even more than I admired their musicianship, and boy, as a struggling musician they really gave me the highest possible bars to reach. I still have a hard time catching all the nuances of Steve Howe's guitar work and I've been listening to this album for 50 years. I know it so well I could conduct it, but there's no way I could ever play like that. I know of only one guitarist who can play this stuff note for note, and that's Andy Graziano of The Band Geeks. Here's an example of themm on their tour - bear in mind that this was recorded on someone's cell phone - doing the Firebird intro and Your's Is No Disgrace. th-cam.com/video/JdBMOAfu2hw/w-d-xo.html Jon Anderson was 78 last year when they did this tour and sounds wonderful.

I just hope that Jon Anderson can tour healthily a couple more times. It can't be easy to tour at any age, much less his age. He has to pace himself. 🙏💚

...Shawn, once I discovered the Yessongs, I never looked back at their studio versions, but its even getting better from here... not only are all their live versions technically on par with the studio ones, but they have improved some of the song writing since the original versions came out - this recording is just stellar - the only other live (also triple-) album that I would put alongside this one is Emersen, Lake & Palmer's 'Welcome back my friends...', for exactly the same reasons...

With great audience anticipation & great expectation, early 70s YES always opened their show with Stravinsky's recording of the Firebird Suite intro, then into Siberian Khatru. After this tour, starting with the TALES album the stage sets became incredibly elaborate. YES LIVE was a true phenomenon over and above every great artist group I have ever seen. And it was a prerequisite for us as teens to see them while Tripping with Ellis D. CAn YOU IMAGINE ? If it wasn't for the Flashbacks, I wouldn't believe it myself! 😅 We didn't have TH-cam so there was no way to know & experience them other than in person once a year so this unique Live Dbl 1973 album was at the time, cherished by fans.

Yes during this period played so aggressive live. There were three albums which is six sides, this was the opening song. From here they never let up, they outright kill every song. The album is a Non-Stop blistering avalanche of music that leaves your jaw on the floor and exhausted.

An incredible album and song. What an opening!
The Yessongs version of "Close To The Edge" is one of my favorite versions of the song, with the opening section a bit smoother and less frenetic than the studio track. A couple of songs on the album could use some remastering, but the masters were lost and the only resort now is to use AI to separate the vocals and instruments, like The Beatles did with Now and Then, adjust the mix and the entire album will be better, even though it's great as it is.
But yeah, the actual Yessongs album is cleaner sounding than the clips from the film.

Others have probably pointed this out, but I'll do the internet thing and repeat: Heck YEAH! Yes live is an amazing "how did they do that?" beast! The "opening" sequence is in fact a recording of the end of Stravinski's "Rite of Spring" and, along with an excerpt from "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" are default YES concert openers. Give a listen to the opening from "YesShows" (another awesome YES live album) and you'll hear the band begin to play along with the recording. It's amazing. The audio from the concert film "Yessongs" is pretty crappy, but you get to see the band in their prime ripping it up and showing what ridiculously talented musicians they are - the LP recordings are better (not perfect, but hey, it was 1973!) There are a few times in the album where there are timing issues, but that does give the experience the honest "live" feel. Give a listen to "I've Seen All Good People" and "Perpetual Change" from Yessongs, and "Parallels" and "Ritual" or "Gates of Delirium" from YesShows to witness more wizardry. YES live has always been a treat - they aren't flawless, but the experience can be life altering.

I always thought it was a bit pompous of them to open their shows with that extract from The Firebird Suite but I've since read that they were very inspired by Stravinsky and that the section in Siberian Khatru towards the end (the vocal section) is clearly inspired by the flute and oboe sound from 'The Rite of Spring'. In that context It kind of makes sense. Great reaction!

Saw these guys in concert a year after this album was released. Bill Bruford had been replaced by Alan White on drums, otherwise it was the same lineup. They started off playing their newest album Tales of Topograghic Oceans but the crowd didn't want any part of it and started to boo😮. They had planned on playing the whole double album but cut it way short and swung into almost every song on this lp. I'll never forget Rick Wakeman encouraging us to keep booing. He hated ToTO. I heard he once had a pizza delivered to him on stage while they played the album, he was so bored😂
Jon Anderson looked lit up too. But it still was a great show and one of the most fun concerts I ever saw. Chris Squire was incredible as were all them.

Stravinsky's Firebird finale excerpt was Yes's signature concert intro. It just builds up the anticipation really well. Glad you are doing this because not enough people have reacted to it. The definitive version for me (explosive ending - no fade out).

Around this time Yes began to end MOST of their songs on a sharp cut like this for a “LIGHTS OUT” effect. And I always love that.

    Nice reaction, thanks👍
If you don't know Yes, you shouldn't start with this, only when you've had all the classics should you experience this as their best dessert🙏

When you think that this song is for many the weakest track on CttE you realize how fantastically excellent the whole album is.

Just wait until you hear "Starship Trooper"...
The entire album is great, tho "Close to the Edge" ( my favorite YES song!) Is a bit of a letdown.
You can get very good versions of "CTTE" on the "7 Shows From '72" boxed set.
