      to the guy with the gray hair and is taller, stranger things take place in 1983 through 1984. So no cell phones. Also using a camera like that means the kid is an enthusiast in photography. Which means that even if it was taking place today there are though's in the hobby who use that type of camera for the unique quality it presents. The shorter guy is right about it being a dark room and everyone needs to understand that this takes place before the cell phone with cameras if cell phones were even around to begin with.

Started a photoclass the next year learning about f-stops, focal lengths, etc, and won a 2nd place at your Del Mar Fair in San Diego. For all of the 7th grade submitted photos. Continued through high school and some of college before my equipment was stolen when I was 20. I have been cell phone shooting since (I am 38) and know that my experience helps in those photos. I still have a very old flip top medium format camera. (2 1/4 by 2 1/14) but can't find film for it anymore. I would go out and shoot that, though I miss my filters that I used to have. also, you need a real developer, a stop bath ((2% dilution of acetic acid or a 2.5% dilution of sodium metabisulfite ) which will stop the development then you must use a fixer aka as in Hypo (Sodium Thiosulfate - Na2S2O3-5H2O). because if you expose the paper to light it darkens again the paper turns black

    • @allensmithphotography
      @allensmithphotography 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The Dev they used is a crude caffeinol. They just didn't mix or prep it correctly. Caffeinol can develope film and paper quite well. But you're right for the stop and needing a fix. Those are much harder to homebrew

    • @Screamingtut
      @Screamingtut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@allensmithphotography, that's what I thought too but still, if you do not "fix" the print after the stop bath bu washing it or putting it in a fixer solution it will turn the print very dark gray. we did this in my Physic class to show how we can make developer in my HS back in 1970

    • @KeepEvery1Guessing
      @KeepEvery1Guessing 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes. Exposure causes the grains to get a dot or two of metallic silver on their surface. The developer feeds current through those dots and converts the rest of the grain to silver. Stop bath let's you control how long the developer works, since it can also convert unexposed grains, albeit much slower. But the unexposed grains are still light sensitive, causing fogging over time if left as is, through light exposure when you have it out of the dark. Fixer makes the paper no longer light sensitive, "fixing" the image. This is usually followed by a plain water wash, since leaving the fixing chemical on the result isn't the best thing. There are a number of chemistries through the ages. Investigate daguerreo-type and tin-type.

    • @EelcoPeterzen
      @EelcoPeterzen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Not sure what you mean, but during development in the dark room, Brian gets each photo out of the black box by using both hands, at which point the watch could draw a line over the still photosensitive paper.
      The lines are weirdly focused for his glasses to be the cause at that distance. But who knows, maybe he has concave lenses with the focal point near where the paper is. However, in the dark room there's no light to reflect, other than the red light and I doubt an increase intensity of red light will make a big impact on paper that does not react to red light.
      So, that leaves us with daylight reflections during the exposure time, i.e. the taking of the photo. Due to the pinhole lens of the camera obscura however, reflections from his glasses should cause a burn in over his eyes.

    I was fortunate to be able to take a traditional photography course in highschool (mid to late 90s), so there's a special place in my heart for f-stops and aperture settings and physical 35mm film. Even the tangy scent of the developer chemicals gets me nostalgic. However, I also love the easy point and click of my phone camera. It's not ideal, but it's definitely more practical.

  • @rvaughan74

    Having done photography in High School for my Exploring Technology class I can attest proper chemicals and timing is VERY important for getting photopaper properly developed. Also, a pair of light amplification goggles might help too depending on the spectrum of sensitivity. Consequently, I love my DSLR and can't wait to try out my 1300mm focal length lens with 4x adapter sometime (Effectively 5200mm). Supposedly I should be able to view Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn with it.

    For future reference, you can rate photo paper at around 6 iso. From there, you can, depending on how fin your pinhole is, plug that information into a light meter to get a proper exposure time. So if you're using paper at 6 iso, with an aperture of roughly f/64 shooting in bright sunlight might give you a time of between 5-15 seconds depending on weather conditions. You should be able to find the exact iso rating on the website of the manufacturer's website!

    you should make a camera obscura , it like a camera you can stand in the out side world is show upside down and backward on the opposite wall in real time.
    it's also a way to prove and make easier to understand that when people say our eyes work that way its turn.

    I did this in 7th grade too! We had a third solution that the paper went in as well though. Hell if I remember what it was. I do not remember at all how we got it from the film to the paper. It was a lot of fun though! I loved using the dark room. At least, when I was developing paper with red light. Not as much fun when it was pitch black and I was taking film out of the can.

    why did you paint the outside of the box but not the inside? The inside is the important part to be black because it removes the potential for reflections and glare. Also your photos are gonna fade or keep exposing because you didn't use a fixer.

    As someone that grew up taking black and white photos and was going to college for photography in film format, as cell phones were still Nokias and Razors then, I sympathize with this comment. I tell people just learning photography to set cameras to manual and make them change the black and white settings. Thus you will start to grasp how things pop and show up in a photo. It teaches you depth of field, contrast, exposures, f-stop ratings and a whole slew of things. We are such a point and click with no actual photographic framing society now......my own rant over.
    I was little thrown off by the abstract developer and stopper though. A typical bath is developer, stopper, fixer, wash. Developer starts the process, stopper, stops the process, fixer dissolves undeveloped silver halide, and washer washes off all the chemicals.
    Last add in, rubberized tongs work better at not scratching the image too. The easiest way to agitate each solution is by lifting one end of the bath and then setting it down gently, istnead of moving it with tongs. Prevents scratching off of the silver. Don't mean to nitpick at all, but just my years of training kicking in. Hehe. Still a wonderful video!

    I did this for my 6th grade science project 40 years ago. The biggest difference is I went length wise with pin hole to paper vs top to bottom. (and i actually bought developer, stop bath & fixer) I found that a 30 second exposure on my set up was adequate as long as I was careful with my time in the developer.

    There's a kit company in Japan, Gakken, that had a 35 mm film pinhole camera kit for about 3500 yen ($30 USD), which I built about 10 years ago. The camera exposed negative color film, which could then be developed by any 1-hour developer service. Images came out fine, but blurry. Double exposures were fun, but difficult to make really convincing. Digital cameras are easier to use, cheaper to take thousands of shops, and easier to edit the images afterward.

    You would get much better results if use the actual developer and stop chemicals, also a flat bottom dish (like a casserole dish) would be better than a paint tray. For the camera itself, use a thicker aluminium, like from a soda can. you also want to paint the inside black. When developing have a 3rd dish with just plain tap water to wash off the chemicals after the stop. the
    real key is timing, its not a 30 seconds and done, it can take 2-3 minutes depending on your lighting

  • @tHaH4x0r
    @tHaH4x0r 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    You guys should've done a bit more research before attempting, since exposure scales linearly with time. I.e., you should double the time for double the exposure. Having 10s increments doesn't make much sense. Having 20, 40 and 80s would have made far more sense (doubling of exposure every frame). Anyway, good effort non-the-less. Can't complain about the results much.

    The photos getting darker after the stop bath is partially due to no wash bit also you need to then do a fixer bath that strips the remaining silver salts from the paper so that they don't continue to be exposed to light and develop.

    I bet there's a lot of people who didn't realise this camera is the same way your eye captures light, the pinhole is the pupil and the retinas are the photopaper, your eyes lense allows you to focus more on closer or further objects. You might be wondering about the fact that the image created is upside down but that really is what happens in your eye, your brain just knows to flip it the right way round again. This means when you were a baby for a brief few hours or maybe even days after your birth, your sight will be upside down because your brain hasn't learned to flip the image yet, this makes people wonder whether or not this is what makes babies cry when they are born.

    I had to make one of these for a school project. Mine didn't work too well, but it was fun.
    Edit: We had to do a bunch of math to make it work properly, though. It wasn't just put some paper in a shoe box with a hole in it and hope for the best.

    • @andyherle

      Zachary Gagnon-Hartman oh cool what type of math do you do to figure out what’s happening?

    • @zacharygh
      @zacharygh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyherle We only had to do math to get the distance from the camera to the object correct. The distance between your film and your pinhole changes where the image will be in focus. Because we were all using different boxes to make our cameras, we all had different calculations to do. We also had to calculate the exposure time. This was four years ago, so I don't remember any of the equations.
      With all of this said, there is a very precise way to do this. But then again, that would be very Modern Rogue.
