I heard people say this episode was scripted or something, but I genuinely feel like the whole thing was genuine and it could have really gone either way. The entire battle felt intense and crazy, this was a super great episode. I absolutely loved it. Best episode yet. What a treat, thanks so much for sharing this game with us!
Hot Damn, what an epic fight. So much blood spilled in that sacred chamber and so much otherworldy power brought to bear. If the metaphor of books in a series still applies to the Chain, this would definitely be the final fight of book 1. Can't wait for the roleplay fallout from this battle, because there is no way that a fight like that went unnoticed, or that enemies of that caliber had no influence in the guilds. Easily the best part is when the Lady of Fire spoke to King. That bit gets even more echoey if you have the tactical stream open at the same time. So freaking good.
Slim's been getting such cool alternative nicknames recently, with Chainsaw two weeks ago and fkin TIMERAIDER this week. You gotta wonder when his fellow officers will start referring to him by a new name.
A lot of cool stuff happened this fight, but I wanna draw attention to one thing. Boots basically gave his life, and maybe his soul, to make sure Slim lived to take his next turn. And I think it was the right choice
Feel like Judge missed an opportunity to claim Boots' departing soul, chasing off whatever extraplanar being is escorting Boots' soul to his rightful afterlife with a "This soul is rightfully mine, you have no claim to it!" before cramming it back into his broken body. Maybe Judge just isn't that kind of devil though.
I feel Phil's pain in an ability being forgotten the entire time being remembered on him. I also feel Matt's desire to do his cool thing with his bad guys, especially when the fight is beginning to swing further and further into the party's favor.
To those for whom it matters (and it's, of course, perfectly fine if it doesn't at all), PHB p.189 says this about ties during initiative. "If a tie occurs, the DM decides the order among tied DM-controlled creatures, and the players decide the order among their tied characters. The DM can decide the order if the tie is between a monster and a player character. Optionally, the DM can have the tied characters andmonsters each roll a d20 to determine the order, highest roll going first."

The enemy party was so much better than the level 20 heroes, but because I was so overwhelmed I missed so much to keep the pace up that it was a fair match. Would definitely have done it again!
I think having too many powerful NPCs in a fight, particularly fighting each other takes too much agency away from the players. In a high school campaign where this happened, I once said "Let's let 's NPCs fight 's NPCs while we go off and do our own thing."
It’d be different if it was something Matt was always doing, but this is the very first time some of the patron based characters got to use the new (at the time) concordance rules
Does anyone know if there's a new version of the Illrigger class? I know some time ago Matt posted on Reddit that he was working on some updates. I'm making an Illrigger NPC for my campaign, and I was hoping to download the latest version. The PDF I have is still v1.0.

So thoroughly disappointed no one in chat caught the wizard using Shield and Counterspell (2 reactions!!!) on the first turn of combat. Leech should've gotten that Blight off 😣
Maybe he could use two reactions. NPC's have abilities that players don't after all. Plus trying to follow a battle with twelve combatants is really hectic
The wizard used shield before it's first turn, then counterspell after its turn. You can't take another reaction till the start of your first turn. I thought the same way, but then realized leech goes last and the wizard casting shield was one of the first things that happened.
Many rules infractions here, unfortunately almost all of them against the players. 1.) Goblin player (Copper) uses Nimble Escape during his first turn to get out of melee range. Nimble escape allows him to do this without taking an attack of opportunity. NPC takes opportunity attack against him and knocks Copper prone. 2.) Stinking Cloud is centered on enemy priest NPC. The area is supposed to be "heavily obscured". Enemy priest casts a spell out of the cloud that he could not have aimed and damages several players. 3.) Counterspell is used against Leech during the first round of combat by the same Wizard NPC who had already used his reaction to cast Shield. His reaction was spent for this turn and he couldn't have done that. Leech's Blight attack should have succeeded. Edit: I was wrong about #4 and 5 due to not understanding the sentinel feat vs regular attacks of opportunity. They have been removed. These were all in the first 2 rounds of combat and they made an already extremely difficult encounter significantly harder. I'm not going to be too hard on Matt for this one because he was having to run 6 NPC's but the players should've been calling him on this stuff too. Edit: After watching the 2nd half after the break there were thankfully no rules issues on that side of it. I imagine the start of the combat was just overwhelming with the amount of things that needed to be looked up.
@mattcoleville Missed some stuff about Raise Dead: Casting Time 1 HOUR And the last paragraph: Coming back from the dead is an ordeal. The target takes a -4 penalty to all Attack rolls, Saving Throws, and Ability Checks. Every time the target finishes a Long Rest, the penalty is reduced by 1 until it disappears. Resurrection (too high for the PCs) has the same casting time and the same need for rest by the person raised plus a need for the caster to rest.
How about Revivify? "You touch a creature that has died within the last minute. That creature returns to life with 1 hit point. This spell can't return to life a creature that has died of old age, nor can it restore any missing body parts." I mean, King has used it twice in previous sessions, it seems he always prepares it.
@@johncreekpaum4998 That " nor can it restore any missing body parts" clause makes it complicated with the over the top "head exploding" and such descriptions. /that/ part I do chalk up to MC hand waving so that a random flourish of description doesn't screw over the players unintentionally.
Man I was SO anxious watching this entire episode! Totally on the edge of my seat. So fricking AWESOME! Fair play to Matt, looked like a total mind fuck running so many OP NPCs. But The Chain won!!! 😁 yessssss
Find it weird how Ajax, probably the most lawful character in the world, summons the lord of the court of all flesh, the ever changers who, basically worship chaos.
Ajax the Iron Saint is a being of Chaos. He's taking over the world, which Colville says is in an Age of Chaos, this his consorting with demons and the Court of All Flesh
He also stated albeit via RP from the Orc that Ajax is going insane. So chaotic behaviour on the trip to madness is plausible even IF that isn't Matt's angle.
in the first round, the wizard would not have been able to cast Counter Spell, as he had already cast Shield as a bonus action. Only 1 reaction per round.
iirc Matt accidentally rolled for some of them when the cloud was formed, which was a mistake since they only take damage on the end (or maybe the start, I forget) of their turn. To accommodate this, since many people get antsy about these things if you re-roll for them, he kept that roll for the first of their checks.
As a player the best thing you can do in combat is to be ready for your turn. At 1:50 they still haven't completed two rounds of combat, it gets to Phil's turn (who has previously complained about how long the turns are taking) and he doesn't know what he's going to do as a fighter. It's a tough situation, but since each round is taking about a whole hour you should immediately be ready to act.

"The Time for Fucking Around is over" -Matt Colville
in the first round, the wizard would not have been able to cast Counter Spell, as he had already cast Shield as a bonus action. Only 1 reaction per round.
Reaction, but yes Counterspell took Blight off the table and basically killed Leech.
Tim Bennett I mean... you’d be right if the wizard got a turn between the shield and the counter spell. But he didn’t so it’s irrelevant.
Why did the enemies not have to make their saving throws for the stinking cloud?
iirc Matt accidentally rolled for some of them when the cloud was formed, which was a mistake since they only take damage on the end (or maybe the start, I forget) of their turn. To accommodate this, since many people get antsy about these things if you re-roll for them, he kept that roll for the first of their checks.
There is no power which desires to grow out of sight, no force which thrives only in unseen places, which can be good.
Fantastic episode!!!
The SWORD.🤘 Love the shirt.
Poor leech, you got rekt.
I wasn't sold on the monk class until I saw one exploding ribcages and heads
