@@fsd2696 I’m self taught as well and in my(amateur) opinion, guidelines can be for 90% of beginner-intermediate artists, it’s just that majority of them tend to use the wrong guidelines. Guidelines are meant to guide YOU and help YOU with proportion, placement, etc. If using the same guidelines this guy uses doesn’t help you at all and is uncomfortable, then they’re not for you! You have to know exactly what you’re doing and be very skilled to be able to draw perfect proportions without any sort of planning or guidelines, and those types of people wouldn’t be watching a sketching tutorial. There’s probably a 90% chance you do use guidelines of some kind, just not strict ones like you see others use.
But then again, I don’t know you or how you draw, I’m just some random kid online with an opinion lol

A lot of people want to head straight to the details, but the thing they are missing is structure. You can’t have a good proportions if you don’t have a solid sketch of the defining features of the subject you are drawing. Once you have the basics down that’s when you can start adding detail.

Hi Laura. Andrew Loomis has an excellent book called Drawing the Head and Hands that I would recommend as it describes children's heads from infants to teenagers. This would be the starting point for ratios, knowing that one must possibly adjust for a specific individual's uniqueness.
