  • Audi has finalised its deal to buy into Sauber and make the Swiss team its works Formula 1 entry in 2026.
Less than two months after we learned Audi was definitely going to build an engine for the new rules, we now know for sure which team will be running that engine.
There’s plenty to ponder as the first-ever Audi F1 project takes shape, and we’re here to explain how it will work, what key questions still need to be answered - and what the latest is with Volkswagen Group sister brand Porsche as the Audi programme gathers pace.

Don't know about everyone else, but I know I'm not the only one who calls the team Sauber unless I really think about it. I've heard commentators switch between the Alfa Romeo and Sauber names since the hook up. That team will always be Sauber first and foremost, and even if it's not everyone's "first choice" team, any time they do well, I'm pretty sure we're all really happy! Almost as emotional as when Minardi got a point lol.
Not kidding, I could end up in tears 😂. When Vettel won in the Toro Rosso car, not long (in F1 terms) after it had been bought out from Minardi, and still had mostly Minardi mechanics working there, I was sobbing my heart out with joy!

Their valuation is due to the fact that there are essentially 10 grid slots that teams and the FIA all have to agree to increasing it. That makes it incredibly difficult to expand due to it being in the teams interest to prevent new entries meaning to only way onto the grid is to by an existing team. That would be a good one, but with all the F1 hype stateside, Andretti should strike while the iron is hot and get Ford to make them an F1 PU, the FIA would have to let them in for sure considering the history Ford has in the sport as providing the top garagista engine for decades and all the world champions it sat behind. The advertising exposure for Ford would be great also.

If I remember hearing correctly Mateschitz always said AlphaTauri was always for sale for the right price. I would see Porsche buying them more likely than Andretti being on the grid. With the cost cap and new pay deals the 10 other teams don't want to dilute that prize pool further. Bring 2026 would be good to see a closing up the grid just need Williams and Aston Martin to improve a bit more, this deal should sort out Sauber and then any team has the potential of a podium if not a race win.

here's a tip for the editor: NEVER scroll text this fast in a video made at 25fps. it's jarring and unreadable for as long as it is moving. so either scroll a lot slower, or do a more aggressive sinusoidal easy in/out so it's faster in the transition but eases in faster to a readable speed in less time.

The Audi deal with Sauber was in the making for a long time, no surprises there. Porsche's future without the Red Bull deal doesn't seem so clear, though. Running with Audi engines would be as polemic as running Ferrari or Mercedes engines, but the VW board could make Audi rebrand their engine as VW for neutrality. Another option would be to buy a stake in Alpha Tauri and run with RBPT engines, but how competitive would that be?

It will be interesting to see who Audi takes on as a customer team, to help with 1) development testing and 2) a substantial financial contribution. F1 seems to want either five manufacturers and ten teams, or six manufacturers and twelve teams. Andretti still has no partner unless it's as 2nd fiddle to Audi or Porsche.

Not to mention the sound of crickets by Sky F1 at such incidents, because of their heavy British & Mercedes bias. Honestly, I hope Audi or Porsche use a team as a springboard to start their own F1 team. We need more cars/drivers on the grid, and this would be a great way to do that. If Audi or Porsche aren't willing to start a team from scratch, it's clearly too difficult to be worth it for anybody else, so a sister team startup with as many shares parts as possible is the best option.

Porsche - Andretti partnership would be the option that I'm certain most of us would want to see. The sport is growing and expanding to an 11th team would actually generate buzz. Porsche buying an ownership state in Haas or Williams and slapping their logo on the side of the car would excite absolutely no one.
