I for sure thought it was a pub-stunt to get ppl to watch the oscars (at first). But after watching a few times, I'm just not totally sure chris rock and will smith are THAT great of actors, maybe will, but idk if chris is. It was just so natural.
How and why would it be staged? It’s basically decimated Will Smith’s career and he’s got a 10 year ban from the Oscars. Chris can be seen visibly in shock on stage afterwards in the following sections. None of this would have happened for a ‘bit’. Do you think the swearing afterwards was staged too? Just none of that makes any sense.
@@christinaurso-cale7601 "Chris seen visibly shocked"? "The swearing afterwards was staged"? .... Well, they ARE actors. It IS the Oscars. I'm pretty sure that both of them have acted in a couple of movies before where they fake confrontations, getting hit, looking shocked and swearing ... it's called acting. And Will Smith's done comedy. He knows how comedy works. It's not as if in all his decades of movies and TV he hasn't dished jokes at other people ... for they sake of comedy. And let's get real ... an incident like this is worth GOLD for someone who's livelihood is dependent on attention, relevance and a strong social media presence ... ie. every celebrity today. There's Dr Ramani on a video before the Oscar's slap happened, talking with will Smith about his Psyche and problems with females and why he's so angry... After I saw this video, I believe Ricky is right "this slap was something that has built up all his life"
I don't think it was soft because Chris looked genuinely shocked and his hands moved to an aggressive position. But not as hard as it looked. I think Will did as much as he thought he could get away with. Then over did it with the shouting and swearing (Would have gotten away with it publicly otherwise as it would have looked like it was part of the act) He knew Chris was the host and would get into serious trouble if he had knocked Chris to the ground, or his jaw or cheek bone was so sore that he could barely talk.
I lost what little respect I had for Will, and grew an enormous amount of respect for Chris. By the way, stop calling it a slap and call it what it really is... assault

Chris rock handled it perfectly. A good example, not everything needs an equal rise against it. You can be better and rise above it. That is why Chris has gained infinite respect while will lost all of it. Chris did not cry out or get mad, he won by laughing. This is why comedy shouldn’t change, we can be better and stronger, not weak and react to every little thing.
You're right. We're talking about a world of conflict, confusion and personal insecurity on Will's part. Why? Because 1) it's HIS WIFE who puts all their dirty laundry out there in the first place, and 2) he was trying to rescue his own masculinity from his wife's very public trashing of it. the audience had time to think about what will Smith did, and after his lame unapologetic speech for hitting Chris, and how he's a protector of women, they give him a standing ovation! no concern for Chris Rock
That's Liberal Hollywood, nothing surprising there at all. Assault Victims only matter when it fits their whacked out narrative or it's on of their tribe members.

Hopefully next years Oscars have even worse ratings.
Never has a man needed to leave a woman more than Will needs to leave Jada and I know deep down he hates that. He's been stuck between breaking up his family which I believe for many reasons is something he would and has done just about anything to avoid and living a life that's frankly unhealthy and humiliating. Can you imagine living that life in the public eye? There's only so much anyone can stand even if you're so rich and famous you're allowed to be that messed up and above the law of decency. I hope they get to a better place, and I wish Tyler Perry would be frank with both of them. He knows better and is in a position to reach out.
The funniest thing about this is Gervais saying "I didn't say anything REALLY bad about Mel Gibson" and everyone's silent hahaha. Technically, you made some heavy jokes about Mel, Ricky 🤣
Didn't will Smith boycott years ago because something about not black enough? He didn't care the only reason he showed up was because he knew he was getting an award
Very good point. Yes, not enough diversity amongst the Oscar nominees was his beef. Irony is Smith was seen laughing immediately after Rock’s joke, saw his wife’s reaction and felt he had to react to defend her honour. From the guy who played Muhammed Ali, it wasn’t much of slap. Rock stayed on his feet and it was Smith who came out of the whole episode with his reputation tarnished while Rock gained more sympathy.
And this oscars had the first all black production team, which clearly was a diabolical decision as they allowed him to stay in the venue and applauded him
Ricky is the first one I've heard to understand the reaction from the audience. I was so bewildered by the whole thing the rest of the show just seemed to go by in a blur. Thing is…a slap is hardly an ‘angry man’ response! If Smith was genuinely infuriated he’d have balled up his fist and put Chris on the floor…so did Smith realise he was out of order even before unleashing the slap? I think so. He already knew he’d over reacted as he walked to the stage, but then felt committed and that he had to do something aggressive. What he should have done when he knew this, was stop, laugh it off and go back to his seat. The real villain here tho’ was Jada….she sent him to bite like a security hound with a single disapproving glance….just prior to that Smith was laughing too!
I saw it too.. then I kept asking myself, did that just happen? Was it staged?.. I saw it, but couldn't believe it. Then Smith started yelling at Chris..
Jada puts everything about their life on display. If you watch their videos , you’ll quickly understand why he did what he did. Smith knew that he would rather take the disapproval from the world than face Jada’s wrath. I actually feel sorry for him after seeing how he’s been treated. Still does not excuse what he did to Chris Rock. I can’t imagine the humiliation of being assaulted in front of the world. That’s a scar he will carry for the rest of his life.
2 years later and I still can't believe Smith did that. He literally lost the respect of millions and screwed his career in about 10 seconds. He will be remembered now, not for his acting or charisma or motivational and inspirational persona but for that slap.
Will just pulled his punch a bit, still hit him. It makes sense because think of the consequences if he went all in. The 'slap' was meant to be symbolic.
Here's how I think it went down: 1) Will was having personal problems with Jada. The last thing he needed was her getting moody that night over a joke. 2) When Will heard the GI Jane joke, he went into "deer in headlights" mode. We've all been there. You don't know what to do, only that you think you should act. 3) Will walked up to Chris Rock to perhaps do some play fight thingy. But when he got there, he was too pissed off to go through with the joke and so he lashed out with the slap instead. Or perhaps he hit harder than he thought he would and realised this wouldn't be taken as a joke. either way, something went wrong at this moment. 4) Realising he crossed a line, Will went into "double down" mode. I'm very sure he regretted the slap immediately, but an apology at that stage would have been extremely awkward. So his brain decided to shout out, so as to tell everyone he did it because he was hurt. 5) Jada wouldn't have wanted Will to act out in violence. Why would she want that negative attention? I think she thought it was going to be a jokey roughing up at first, like everyone else did. I'm sure everyone involved would have done things differently had they had the time again. Adrenaline makes us do stupid things sometimes and for that, I am a little sympathetic to Will Smith. But I still think he should have been kicked out and not received a standing ovation.
Umm... Will Smith knows how to deal with "good". He's been a huge celebrity since his youth and his career and status has grown by leaps and bounds throughout his life. So it wasn't his inability to handle the pressure of the potential Oscar (although I believe that many of them already know before the winner is revealed, so their surprise is just another act). It looks like it was the explosive combination of his tenuous relationship with Jada and his tremendous ego that were ignited by the alcohol in his system when he realized his wife wasn't laughing along with him and the rest of the crowd. So his base caveman brain flipped into "damage control" mode and Chris Rock was a "safe" target. Will Smith got up and put on a show, which happens to be his area of expertise. Don't forget, this isn't the real world. This is Hollywood...
This isn't the real world; this is Hollywood ... same could be said for the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial, too, couldn't it. Why do we all get so invested in this bullshit?
It was more than a throw away joke, it was layered if people remember the original comments about Demi and what was happening in her marriage at the time Rock knew what he said but expected no comeback.
It's a perfect example of what happens when ego and the constant need for attention affect your judgement. Plus the expectation placed upon comedic actors to entertain (Will, I mean, hence he felt the need to respond). Will intended it to be a joke, his wife and others thought it was a joke hence their lack of reactions, but he over-acted and it was more serious than he actually intended. Not as good an actor as his Oscar then suggested, ironically.
The best of all of this was after Will Smith's slapping, Chris Rock had his vengeance by doing a comedy special on Netflix, which I actually liked because he reminded me a bit of what Dave Chapelle did in his recent comedy special. So, he did what he wanted on stage no matter the backlash.
When I saw the slap, I thought it was a gag. Was this supposed to be funny? Then later WS gets his Oscar and everyone stands up and gives him a standing ovation. I thought WTF!!
Ricky’s the goat! He “would’ve made a joke about his wife’s boyfriend!!!” But I disagree that Will held back. Chris was knocked clean over and should’ve received medical attention.
Nobody I have read has commented that the line “take my wife’s name out of your mouth “ is from a movie Will Smith coproduced and Jana Smiths brother was in. I saw the movie on Netflix. Samuel L Jackson had a lead role.
It's the Jim and Sam show. Unfortunately it's not that good when there isn't a good guest because Sam isn't a funny dude. Chris Rocks' physical reaction as the slap happened seemed fake
Slap looked and was real. Cmon
I’ve really enjoyed Will Smith’s absence the past couple of months.
“That was about everything in his life, ever” yep
Now picture Will Smith going towards Chris Rock, hugging him, and saying something like "I love you, but Jada has been going through a lot, please don't make any jokes about that ok? Focus on me, I take the punches, bro".
Suddenly, world applauds him, Chris apologizes and starts focusing on Will, maybe jokes around that moment, and there we have it. Better result for everyone.
Actually thats very true but very, very hard in the moment especially if Chris keeps constantly taking pot shots at your family as he has done for years and if you saw your mother getting attacked by your father as a child and you stood there and did nothing. It's definitely a better response but I would have reacted similarly to Chris. I can't stand Chris and his treatment of black women.
@@ellie-tk4jy I remember thinking precisely that he could have hugged him, and achieve the same result. Always liked Will, sad to see him fall like that you know?
I had the same thought. Will could just walk up, do a little fake-punching, fake-slapping, or even play-tackle Chris down on the floor and then help him up, just like 2 boys playing-fight. All this would've ended so differently.
@@ellie-tk4jy he jokes on them because they've done a lot of goofy shit in the past. He's a comedian who takes cracks, that will never be a reason for physical violence
You're connecting an alopecia diss to all black women? Seems like a big stretch
Now picture him staying in his seat like a grown up
First time I saw it, I actually thought it was fake and staged. Something didn't look right about it. The reason for it ... the lead up ... the slap ... the reaction ... the aftermath ... it all seemed weird.
And the fact that social media went absolutely mental ... I genuinely thought it was a planned publicity stunt. Still unsure.
Definitely phony. Even the slap sounded more like a "thud".
I for sure thought it was a pub-stunt to get ppl to watch the oscars (at first). But after watching a few times, I'm just not totally sure chris rock and will smith are THAT great of actors, maybe will, but idk if chris is. It was just so natural.
I have to agree mate, I live in the North East of England, if you go for it you go for it, no slaps, he wouldn't have got up mate.
This isn't the reaction of someone who is a veteran and has watched Chris Rock before. He's not an amateur newbie. That doesn't make sense.
Regardless of how pissed off he is, he's going on stage to commit assault ... watched by MILLIONS of people globally??? At an event he's nominated later for an award. Once again, he's not an amateur newbie. He isn't THAT dumb. If he was going to have a go at Chris Rock for that joke ... most guys would have bailed up Chris Rock later some time. You know, no millions of witnesses.
How decimated is his career? Could he do other stuff? Is acting really his main job these days? There's plenty of stuff he does these days and could do. It's not a life ban. Somebody will give him a job later ... Hollywood is like that.
And let's get real ... an incident like this is worth GOLD for someone who's livelihood is dependent on attention, relevance and a strong social media presence ... ie. every celebrity today. Even the negative stuff is worth something because millions are still going to take his side regardless. Celebrities do controversial stuff all the time to get attention. Did the internet, news, social media, etc go crazy about his "slap" for weeks ...... ummm YES!!! Does he still have loyal followers, etc .... HELL YES!!! Has he got MILLIONS of new empathetic followers ... YES!!! Is this material for yet another interview, podcast and Red Table Talk for millions of likes and views ..... YUP.
Oh ... and remember what family we're talking about here. The family that has a history of doing messed up stuff for public attention. Kids getting legally emancipated from their Father, "entanglements", disrespecting each other during Red Table talks, etc. They have no problems doing any stunt for internet content.
Will Smith is not a rookie. For someone who acts fairly well, actually pretends for a living, has done thousands of impromptu interviews, has been in the public eye for decades, is always careful with his words and actions, is a veteran celebrity, always keeps his cool, knows the industry and knows how valuable his image is to his success ...... this incident seems strange. And totally opposite to what an experienced celebrity would do.
Just doesn't make sense. I don't think we're seeing what's REALLY going on.
Love the neaunce in conversation this has turned into. You can see how pressure can get to a man, and bring out the worst, but other than that he’s had a rather clean record.
Like most of the world, I stopped watching the rich Hollywood actors congratulate themselves a long time ago. So I saw the slap on replay the next day! Now not only are the Oscar’s irrelevant; so is will smith!

Imagine being so out of touch with reality thinking that Will Smith is over.
@Todd Um…last year.
Once Will stood up and committed his move he could have changed his mind and simply given Chris Rock a cheeky kiss on his cheek. But as it is the whole of Will Smith's family are psychologically messed up
There's Dr Ramani on a video before the Oscar's slap happened, talking with will Smith about his Psyche and problems with females and why he's so angry...
By the way, stop calling it a slap and call it what it really is... assault
sounds gay
I always enjoyed chris rock and will smith. And now i get a reversal of respect for both. Will smith became a pathetic joke and chris rock i respected for being serious which was ironic cause i enjoyed him because he was funny.
Bit dramatic ! , a slap
Is a much more accurate description than “ assault “
@@Magicalfluidprocess yeah if he really considered it an assault then he would’ve sued. Reminds me of ron when he gets punched by jamm twice and he tells them that it was too weak to consider a punch. A slap isnt much generally but i call it assault just by legal terms.
Will was talking to more then Chris when he said “keep my wife’s name out your mouth”
You're right. We're talking about a world of conflict, confusion and personal insecurity on Will's part. Why? Because 1) it's HIS WIFE who puts all their dirty laundry out there in the first place, and 2) he was trying to rescue his own masculinity from his wife's very public trashing of it. Must be hard to justify staying with a person who disdains and emasculates you as she does him.
@@cliffkast7744 I completely agree. To me it seems obvious that will HAS been fed up with all of the jokes and drama far before that night, unfortunately Chris have will what he thought could be (for whatever reason) the perfect opportunity to show the world he doesn’t like it and wants it to stop (the jokes at least).

Jada puts everything about their life on display. If you watch their videos , you’ll quickly understand why he did what he did. Still does not excuse what he did to Chris Rock. I can’t imagine the humiliation of being assaulted in front of the world. That’s a scar he will carry for the rest of his life.

Prince Harry should study the phenomenon.
Walked away like Mr Jefferson sooo true 😂🤣😅😂🤣😅
Will just pulled his punch a bit, still hit him. It makes sense because think of the consequences if he went all in. The 'slap' was meant to be symbolic.
Here's how I think it went down:
1) Will was having personal problems with Jada.
I was mad that there was no security! I was more pissed at the academy than i was at will smith

EVERY PRO WRESTLING FAN IS SCREAMING "IT'S A WORK!"
It was more than a throw away joke, it was layered if people remember the original comments about Demi and what was happening in her marriage at the time Rock knew what he said but expected no comeback.
He didn’t do it because of the joke. He did it because he is desperate for her to love him.
"Walked back like Mr Jefferson" 😄
It's a perfect example of what happens when ego and the constant need for attention affect your judgement. Plus the expectation placed upon comedic actors to entertain (Will, I mean, hence he felt the need to respond). Will intended it to be a joke, his wife and others thought it was a joke hence their lack of reactions, but he over-acted and it was more serious than he actually intended. Not as good an actor as his Oscar then suggested, ironically.
But he didn’t hold back on shouting the ‘f’ bomb, did he.
Nah, not constant need for attention. Was purely because of jada and her treating him like a pile of trash for years upon years
Also Chris' ego met Will's ego. Let's not pretend Chris did not display ego.

Unfortunately it's not that good when there isn't a good guest because Sam isn't a funny dude. And although Jim is one of the funniest guys ever, he doesnt really get engaged and start firing unless he's with other comedians.
You should absolutely listen to it, but only when there's a good guest, like a comedian on the show.
Oscars said they don't condone violence. But it is fine if you want to make fun of a person with an illness.
Will Smith is definitely on the rocks now
The only point I’ll make is the Oscar’s isn’t a comedy show. It’s an award ceremony.
I'm astounded that anyone thought that that 'slap' was real!
So 2 Hollywood actors on the stage at the Oscars in front of millions, had a moment?
What would have been funny was if Chris Rock had started running away from Will Smith and never let him catch up, like a keystone cops frantic chase.
It’s still insane to me he was given an Oscar immediately after and applauded and cheered
He commuted assault and should’ve been arrested
from where to assualt did he commute
