Beautifull gracefull Edwardian Design. Another elegant 4-4-0 and this wheel configuration says every thing about the Era, when people took time to respect, dress and promenade.
hey Sam, I had a T9 and luckily it was one of the ones that didn't have difficulties with the motor mount. be wary of the tender wheels though, and indeed the underframe; the central two sets of wheels don't always turn, and the tender chassis detail is easily broken. also be careful with the wire, it's very easy to snap. enjoy the model though- t9s are lovely when they run and I regret getting rid of mine as it turns out, after a bit of research, it would have run around Hastings area where my layout is to be set! you live and learn, Alex
Hi Alex, yeah I can't say I've had a problem with the motor either! Yeah sometimes the tenders do have trouble - but it's nicely fixed with some extra weight, but yeah the detail and wire is very fragile! Yeah - I do enjoy this model, I've had it for well over a year, but only just got around to reviewing it! All the best, Sam :)
And time for some trainspotting, i saw your: Triang Drummond M7 0-4-4, Your wrenn R1 0-6-0, your Hornby bullied pacific, your Bachmann U boat 2-6-0 I think, Bullman of course, your Bachmann lord nelson class 4-6-0, Your br/lms fairburn tank 2-6-4. I find 4-4-0s such cool-looking steam locomotives, especially coated in my favorite color 💚 Man, sometimes I would think that if only _Thomas & Friends_ hadn't got canceled, there would've been time for yet another steam engine character with the same chassis just like the T9 and be named after me to make an appearance in the show and work his arc purpose of how useful he could be. Hi mate, thanks so much for the kind comments! Yeah it has changed a lot - I just slowly add extra buildings and trees as time goes on! It's trash compared to most serious layouts - but I really like it myself! :D All the best mate, Sam :)
Hi Sam, great video of a super model I am loving the green livery on your T9 special edition. It goes so well with those southern coaches, the colour matching is great. I've had issues with that fiddly packaging myself, got an A3 in that style of box and it's a faff getting her in and out. I think someone got this already but odd one out is presumably the 4MT, a BR built class but having a southern paintjob. Not prototypical but it looked good. Cheers, Luke
Hi Luke, thanks a lot for the comment mate, glad you liked her with those coaches! Yeah those boxes are a faf - especially when you've got to plug/unplug the tender with every use! Yeah that's right too, very well spotted, that was a tricky one! Cheers, Sam :)
Could i give you a bit of info on this engine Sam,it was built in 1899 at nine elms works, has part of 66 built by Dubs or the LSWR,known has Greyhounds by their crews,on account of their free running abilities,119 was often rostered for royal or v.i.p.duties.So in 1935 it was selected has the southerns royal engine and was repainted with extra lining and burnished fittings,it remained in green through the war while the other 65 were painted black,at nationalisation it was renumbered 30119 but retained its southern green, with Bulleid sunshine lettering, has hornby has done it.The star on the smokebox is a throwback to scotland where selected locos got the adornment, has Dugald Drummond designed 4-4-0s for the NBR and Caledoninan before he came south, maybe someone suggested it! The engine was withdrawn from Dorchester Shed on 12-1952,and amazingly got an obituary in the Times, hope this is of interest Best Wishs keep up the reviews.
Number 30119 was the Southerns royal engine which was why she was the only T9 painted in malachite which she carried until withdrawal in December 1952, oh and the reason the tenders were called watercarts was that they leaked abominably!
Hi Ian, that's very interesting indeed - I wasn't aware of that, so thanks very much! Oh dear - that doesn't sound too good either! Thanks a lot for watching, Sam :)
Well detailed engine. With the main instructions, they should advise how to pick it up / put it down without pulling off a pipe. I do like the malachite, you had a schools class one and a dark khaki one recently (funnily enough the dark khaki won me over at the end). Packaging - seems a great idea, wonder if it was only used for that limited edition? Good demonstration why tyres were not a good idea, yet they had front pickups. Maybe one day, they will have front pickups and not need a tyre. Alan.
Thanks Alan - yeah how to pick it up would have been sensible to include, haha! And yeah - the front pick-ups are a nice touch - and she seems to benefit from them certainly! Glad you liked her anyway, Cheers, Sam :)
Wow 1899? That was almost nearing towards the 20th century when this loco was built. But beautiful old fashioned 0-6-0 locomotive with an unusual tender.
Hi Sam have you notice how with ex big four engines each section has different numbers what I mean is that the southern region has numbers like 3.... the midland region would be 4.... and the Eastern region has 6.... and the Western region has only the 4 numbers as the metal number plates are too expensive to just get rid of. And once again a great video👍
Hi Aaron - yeah that's my dream, though sadly I can't build anything truly permanent up there at the moment! If I'm ever lucky enough to buy a place of my own, then absolutely - that'd be one of the first things on the to-do list! ;D Cheers, Sam :)
#30119 was built by Nine Elms on August 31st, 1899 as London & South Western #119, later it became SR #119 in 1923 and it went under BR ownership in 1948, receiving the number 30119. It was withdrawn from service December 31st, 1952 and it was cut up at Ashford Works Scrapyard on February 28th, 1953 at the age of 53. Hey Sam, if Hornby re-did their thomas & friends range, do you think this locomotive would be the perfect basis for Edward instead of the D49 with the cylinders removed?
Hi Vincent, thanks very much for the comment! Oh really - is that what Edward is, a D49?! But yeah! I think this would be better definitely! All the best, Sam :)
Nice Model! It does look like Edward! Edward is one of my two favorite Thomas characters (along with James) Thankfully only one T9 is preserved (now operational). The T9 isn't the only preserved 4-4-0 that looked like Edward in UK, North British Railway "Glen Douglas" (LNER D34) 256 preserved in Riverside Museum in Glasgow, and Great Northern of Scott "Gordon Highlander" (LNER D40) 49 preserved in Scottish Railway Museum in Bo'ness have survived the scrapper's torch!
@@SamsTrains Yeah, why would I need a Furness Railway K2 or the NER R1 class when we got LSWR T9 (now running), NBR Glen Douglas, and and GNSR Gordon Highlander in existence in UK! 😊
What an elegant model. That said even if green is my favourite colour I do like the black one more just because of the lining, it looks astonishing. The engines are: H class, R1, Merchant Navy, King Arthur (S15), and the odd one out I think is the Standard 4MT? Anyway nice video Sam. Cheers Avi
Hi Avi, thanks for the comment mate - yeah I know what you mean about the black, that one is gorgeous too! And yep that's right - the standard 4 mt was the odd one out! Thanks again, Sam :)
It's a beautiful model! It's a good thing one is preserved! It used to live on the Bluebell Railway, but now it belongs to the National Railway Museum! I think the Bluebell Railway is a better place, especially since it's the only member of the class preserved.
Haven't heard of this one, though she looks great, another great review Sam! I would like to the that really fast Stephenson's Rocket you own pulling bullman ahaha
Hi Charles, thanks a lot for the comment mate - yeah these are lovely! Glad you enjoyed the review! haha yeah - that would be really funny! Cheers, Sam :)
Hey Sam. I’m unsure whether to buy a Hornby T9 or the Bachmann City Class. Since you have both, which do you recommend? Which one is more structurally sound, which pulls more, which one’s faster, and which one is quieter?
I think overall the Bachmann City Class is much better quality for the price - and certainly more structurally sound. The T9 pulls more, but because of the nasty rubber tyres - the City does it without one! They're both similar in terms of speed and silence, though the city is a little faster! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A beauty Sam. Saw Bullman twice, (13.02 "Moo..ves much better" LOL.) Not sure on the odd man out. Was the 0-6-0 tank No. 1127 a Western? Cheers, David.
Hi David! Thanks a lot for the comment - and well done spotting Bullman! No that one was a southern one - the odd one was the Standard Class 4 - it was in a SR livery, but was a BR locomotive - so a very tricky one! :D Cheers, Sam :)
This might be your most delicate locomotive ever in the Hornby Railways range. I'm not sure about other delicate locomotives in the Modern Bachmann range though.
Hi Simon, thanks a lot mate - yeah they certainly know how to make a beautiful model - even if it's more fragile than it needs to be! All the best, Sam :)
Hi Sam! I happened to notice that when the cow came into shot after the loco and the carriages around 13:00 mins, you said "that one's a superb runner, it's smoother, more powerful, much much better, Moo-ves much much better" Was that class joke intentional? ;-) Many thanks for your videos, I'm new to all of this and loving the whole thing, keep making the videos! all the best, Jamie.
Hi Jamie! haha yeah that was intentional haha... sorry for my terribly humour, lol! No problem at all mate - thanks so much for your lovely support! Cheers mate, Sam :)
Nice video as always. I've always liked southern locos, not my favourite big 4 company, but I've always like there design, especially the bullied pacific and the schools
done your polls nothing wrong with 9t the packaging I love I have a few like it it the best one yet I have the nrm t9 cost me £65 new your black one looks I'll hope you can fix it odd one I say navy but that is sr too
Thanks Adi! Yeah the packaging isn't bad - it doesn't really protect the loco very well, considering the work you have to do to get it off! That's very good - my other one was less than that new I think! :D All the best mate, Sam :)
Thats a fine model there Sam, I dunno about those T9 Greyhounds over all though (the original locos) To my eye they always looked awkward, a bit squashed, the buffer beam at the front looked a bit short, never liked the look of stove pipe chimneys and the short boiler didn't help either, neither did all the latches around the smoke box door. But hey beauty is in the eye of the beholder and one mans meat in the next mans poison etc etc etc. (And remember I am bias, as a fan of the products of Swindon, those from Eastliegh are the loco's of 'the enemy' ;) GWR / LSWR was a bit like Spurs / Arsenal lol) Anyway good review of a beautiful model that really does capture the spirit of the original. Jon PS - Odd one out - the 4MT in the fictitious Southern Green?)
Hi Jon, thanks a lot for the comment mate - yeah I fully understand what you mean mate, their proportions are definitely quite unusual - I find her quite attractive personally, but as you say, we all have our different tastes - and that's one of the best things about all of this! Glad you enjoyed the video - and yes, that was the odd one out, well done! :D All the best, Sam :)
Nice loco and review there mate. excellent detail, especially in the cab. I'm with you on the packaging, think it's a bit of a faff. ironically theres a chance of knocking detail off inadvertently getting it out of the box, not ideal on such a loco! super review
It looks like you and me are on the same wave length Sam. SNAP 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟It looks like i have acquired a cracker. I hope my IRON HORSE runs like that. Great video Sam. Merry Christmas. 🚄🚅
I've just spent the day putting five drawers worth of Hornby locos back into exactly that packaging, in anticipation of a move. I'm ready to eat my own fingers.
haha - sorry Peter! I couldn't give it 10 - because I thought there are others that have better detail; the B12 for example! Also I thought the design of the detail was pretty poor in places - especially with the pipework! All the best mate, Sam :)
I have just received one of these limited edition engines from my wife for my birthday and I am over the moon with it not sure if I will run it or put it up in the cupboard with my other special engines What year did Hornby released these engines and should they have a limited edition certificate with them And what makes this model a limited edition compared to the regular version
Hi Corey, that's fab news - enjoy it mate, whatever you decide to do with it! I'm not absolutely certain of the date, but yes they normally do have certificates with them... though maybe that's just train packs? The limited edition literally means that they only made a select number of them... normally 1500 units, or something like that! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi mate - thanks so much for the kind comment! Yes, I've actually made a video with Bullied locos before - I'll leave the link! th-cam.com/video/CA4138MQl_I/w-d-xo.html Cheers, Sam :)
I think this would have made more sense as the Edward Model, seems more like the show since (at least what I have head) Edward was maintained but also extensively modified over the years. Just change the tender to a fowler type and I think you'd have more of a winner....
Yes you are right - though they didn't have this model at the time, and the level of detail would make it far too fragile for a Thomas toy! Visually though, you're right! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
yay its good to be back on your channel and nice video!:) dominik and i have a suggestion can you do a video where your two T9 Would pull a passanger train togeather please!
Hi, thanks for commenting! No that one's not the odd one out - but you could have that - I don't know if there were any others in BR green! :D The odd one out was the 4MT - because it was a BR loco, not an SR one - it was in the wrong livery! All the best, Sam :)
I'm not absolutely sure when Hornby first brought this out - I'd estimate approximately 10 years ago, plus or minus a few years! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi! Yeah the detail was okay - but it was mostly plastic, and the pipework is very poorly attached, meaning that it breaks easily! I only give a 10 on detail, when it's all (most) cast metal, and extremely sturdily applied! All the best, Sam :)
Yeah that's true - well spotted! Again - that's an issue with having tenders that are so light weight - I might try to add some weight to it, to see if that helps! Cheers, Sam :)
Sam'sTrains yeah #119 pulled the train of a certain royal family hence why it is painted in malachite green and a star on the smokebix. Funny that the royal coat of arms didnt come with the loco when you got it
Well, you did have the 57xx in your first Thomas video since that's what Duck is based on, so that should be easy. The others might be more of a challenge, but if you do get your hands on an 812 class, I don't know whether you'll have Donald or Douglas, but there's another Thomas character for you. Here is a link to the 944: www.djhmodelloco.co.uk/prodpage.asp?productid=3252

I got me a T9 as a direct result of having seen Sam's Review, of it. Absolutely fabulous. Thank you, Sam.
1:27 I love that kind of packaging!
Yeah it's not bad actually - I think I prefer the block of ice though! :D
great video mate :) she's definitely a stunner , just a shame about that traction tire! - all the best :)
Thanks very much! Yeah it is a shame about that - but still a good loco overall!
Cheers,
Sam :)
I'm not used to tender engines having their tender wheels showing. But that livery has to be one of my top favorites.
Yeah absolutely - it's a very unusual look isn't it?! :D

The T9s are such a cute design!
Yeah they really are!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great southern video! Your railway has really come on, I watched a vid from 2 years ago and it has massively improved! :)

Thanks Muneem, yeah I love it too - it truly is a classic livery! :D

the star is interesting. I've seen it on many steam engines but not on a model.
I know! I've not seen it either... except on the Caledonian Single, which was also a Drummond Design!

I pick my locos up grabbing it on the sides on the Runningplate
Hi Rob, yes - so do I, but you can't with this, since there's delicate pipe-work that runs along both sides of the running board!

That's some box Sam! And I love that tender. It looks great without axel boxes, very striking.

Which train is that, is it Edward by any chance?? Lots of people say that! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
But Edward has two medium weels and two small weels not to complain that is
Is it Edward
done your polls
nothing wrong with 9t
the packaging I love I have a few like it it the best one yet
I have the nrm t9 cost me £65 new
your black one looks I'll
hope you can fix it
odd one I say navy but that is sr too
Thanks Adi! Yeah the packaging isn't bad - it doesn't really protect the loco very well, considering the work you have to do to get it off!
That's very good - my other one was less than that new I think! :D
All the best mate,
Sam :)
(And remember I am bias, as a fan of the products of Swindon, those from Eastliegh are the loco's of 'the enemy' ;) GWR / LSWR was a bit like Spurs / Arsenal lol)
Anyway good review of a beautiful model that really does capture the spirit of the original.
Jon
PS - Odd one out - the 4MT in the fictitious Southern Green?)
All the best,
Sam :)
Thank you for your reply I have emailed Hornby to try and find out what year they were made and did yours have a certificate with it
No problem mate! I can't remember if I'm honest - I don't think so though!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Love it uploading later if anyone wants to watch
Thanks! And okay - I'll keep an eye out!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Yay this came out on my birthday thanks Sam 😊, I went to Didcot railway centre today to c the engines, oskar
also for my birthday I got the same br 08 shunter as u,
Awesome! Have a really happy Birthday - hope you have a great day!
And cool - hope you enjoy the shunter! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Nice loco and review there mate. excellent detail, especially in the cab. I'm with you on the packaging, think it's a bit of a faff. ironically theres a chance of knocking detail off inadvertently getting it out of the box, not ideal on such a loco! super review
Thanks very much for the kind words - yeah this really does have awesome detail! haha - a faff is definitely the right word ;)
All the best,
Sam :)
nice! where are these models produced? in GB?
Thanks Rex - nah the Hornby stuff is all done in China now unfortunately :/
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
It looks like you and me are on the same wave length Sam. SNAP 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟It looks like i have acquired a cracker. I hope my IRON HORSE runs like that. Great video Sam. Merry Christmas. 🚄🚅
haha glad to hear that Mark - hope yours runs well too! :D
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
7:05 Wow what a fantastic cab! :0
I know! Truly impressive that one! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
I've just spent the day putting five drawers worth of Hornby locos back into exactly that packaging, in anticipation of a move. I'm ready to eat my own fingers.
Oh blimey! Yeah that's not a nice job - especially if you've got to disconnect the wires too! That's job very well done anyway! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Your'e a hard man with the ratings Sam , 9/10 for detail Tut Tut . lol
Great review of a lovely loco .......Peter
haha - sorry Peter! I couldn't give it 10 - because I thought there are others that have better detail; the B12 for example! Also I thought the design of the detail was pretty poor in places - especially with the pipework!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
neat video on this exclusive!
Thanks very much! Yeah I was really happy with it!!
All the best,
Sam :)
The t9s are nice aren't they and yes I do think they are very fragile:)
Thanks for the comment! Yes definitely very fragile sadly :(
Cheers,
Sam :)
It was standard 4mt class
Thanks again for playing Will! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Great video Sam!!!!!
Thanks Roy, glad you enjoyed it!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great review Sam I love all southern locos! Just wondering but can we have a day with bulied locos?
Hi mate - thanks so much for the kind comment! Yes, I've actually made a video with Bullied locos before - I'll leave the link!
th-cam.com/video/CA4138MQl_I/w-d-xo.html
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
yay its good to be back on your channel and nice video!:)
dominik and i have a suggestion can you do a video where your two T9 Would pull a passanger train togeather please!
Thanks for coming back Dominik - and yeah okay - I'll see if I can do that one day! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
thanks sam your the best youtuber! :)
Yay, another lovley southern!
haha, thanks Alex - yeah I love these Southern locos too! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
the flying scotsman has a big family I think I am gonna call him Carl 😁
hahaha! The perfect name for the flying Scotsman ;D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam you should run this with your city class and another 4-4-0 like that
Thanks for the comment! Yeah that's a great idea - I'll give that a go! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Is the BR Green loco at 14:25 the odd one out?
Hi, thanks for commenting! No that one's not the odd one out - but you could have that - I don't know if there were any others in BR green! :D
The odd one out was the 4MT - because it was a BR loco, not an SR one - it was in the wrong livery!
All the best,
Sam :)
I'm looking at buying a t9 second hand if you don't mind me asking what year is this hornby model from
I'm not absolutely sure when Hornby first brought this out - I'd estimate approximately 10 years ago, plus or minus a few years!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I wonder do you like steam locomotives or diesel locomotives
haha, I wonder ;)
Definitely steam for me!! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
6:55 dont you mean on the Black one Sam? ;)
haha! Yeah I did mean that - my bad! ;D
Drummonds finest. Superheating put the icing on the cake.
haha I agree!! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This model could be made into Edward the Blue Engine with a bit of modifications to the cab and six-wheeled tender.
Yeah I agree it could - it does look very similar to him! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks, it sort of does and it will. I know because I'm working on a project of him.
Sorry Sam but I must ask, why not rate the details of the T9 a 10. I was surprised buy the amount of details.
Hi! Yeah the detail was okay - but it was mostly plastic, and the pipework is very poorly attached, meaning that it breaks easily!
I only give a 10 on detail, when it's all (most) cast metal, and extremely sturdily applied!
All the best,
Sam :)
what a lovely train paint job suits it well : ) also is it a 4 - 4 - 0 or a 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 ?
Thank you! I agree - the paintwork looks awesome! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
"It moves great" XD the cow
haha I know - sorry for my terrible humour ;D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for the reply
At slow speeds the middle two tender wheel stick and don't run ?
Yeah that's true - well spotted! Again - that's an issue with having tenders that are so light weight - I might try to add some weight to it, to see if that helps!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Have you tried deluxe materials liquid gravity
Is the 4mt the odd one out
Yes it is - well done! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
what is the running board made out of?
Plastic unfortunately!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
i just wanted to ask you to do this one
Oh cool! Great minds think alike! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
You realize the T9 you got is the Royal Engine right
I didn't know that! I thought those had white cab roofs?! D:
Thanks for watching,Sam :)
Sam'sTrains yeah #119 pulled the train of a certain royal family hence why it is painted in malachite green and a star on the smokebix. Funny that the royal coat of arms didnt come with the loco when you got it
Hey sam,s trains that looks like a K2
Thank you!! Yeah it does look very similar! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Not even close...
This engine is beautiful, reminds me of Edward but she is really a stunner!!!!!
Dennis (my real name!)
Thanks Dennis - really glad you liked it mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam, sorry I'm late mate. Cool video, it looks like Edward, just a bit more realistic.
-Toby
No problem mate- thanks for coming to watch! Yeah it does look a lot like him I think! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam Gorgeous as a box of Ferrero Rocher!
haha absolutely! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Review the following:
Caledonian Railway 812 and 944 classes
LSWR 0298 Class
GWR 57xx Class
Hi Alan, thanks for the recommendations - If I ever get my hands on these, I'll certainly review them for you!
All the best,
Sam :)
Will you a saddle tank engine that looks like Wilber's from Thomas and friends?
Review
That depends - I may have one - I'll have to google Wilber to find out! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains I ment wilbert
Does this train look like Molly?
No offense. Are you from England or Australia
I'm from England! :D
Instead of all these reviews, lets have a total best loco's for the last 3 years, just a list, no talk or just little.
I spotted 4 counting the bullman
Oh you spotted 4 other locos?! I can't remember how many there were!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Correct me if I'm wrong but they built 66 engines in 3 years
Hi Trey - yeah I think that's right - did I say something different in the video!?
All the best,
Sam :)
Is it tender driven
All the T9s are loco driven fortunately! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
How do you get on your wall of fame
Hi Rowan - you just need to email me your picture/art - the instructions are at the end of most videos mate!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains cheers
6:55 *Black one?
Oh yes - oops! ;D
the T9 is Drummond's most famous designe
Yeah that's probably true - either that or the M7!
All the best,
Sam :)
Every locomotive is the U.S.A. is left hand driven. The engineer's side of the cab is on the right.
That's very cool! Just like cars then - the opposite!
Cheers,
Sam :)
The bullied pacific is not southern it is LMS
Nope - sorry about that, but it's definitely SR ;)
There were some rather cute looking locos made in Britain.
Thanks William - yeah I think so too! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
