I have only seen one railroad loco this detailed. The fowler 4P is in the railroad range yet has a painted cab, metal reverser rod and even working air intakes on top of the cab! Also, love that T9! The tender wheels look so odd!
I've still got The Lakelander set, plus Hornby Thomas, and one from down south. Dark blue paint - and quite a bit of rolling stock, including some Sodor stuff.
Oh very nice! Yeah I know of that set - it's the Red 0-4-0 one isn't it?! That sounds pretty awesome too - have you uploaded any videos of them?? Cheers, Sam :)
Yeah, that's the one! The last loco is the SDJR 0-6-0 tank engine. I got it for around £35.99 in my local model shop - I don't upload stuff anymore actually.
I think the colour is Maunsell Southern Olive Green? I have 2 x schools in my N gauge collection; both by Dapol. One of my favourite locos of all time.
Got myself a hornby railroad schools class myself this week from the hornby website R3586 "Sevenoaks" with the early BR emblem and I agree it is a great model and the cab interior is painted and detailed on my model too . Superb value for money and a faultless runner on the layout too
Oh really?? That's very cool! I can highly recommend the 'The Model Centre' - you can send them your locos, or buy one of theirs - and they'll rename and re-number for you! I used the service recently, and they did a superb job! If they don't do a Schools class with your specific School, I'm sure they could help you out! Cheers, Sam :)
#925 was built on July 31st, 1934 at Eastleigh Works. It became BR #30925 in 1948 and it was withdrawn on December 31st, 1962 at the age of 28. It's now preserved at the National Railway Museum in York.
Nice video. FYI the darker livery was olive green and was used from the beginning of Southern in 1923 until around 1936. From 1937 until Nationalisation the lighter green, called malachite was used. Locos serviced during the war were black.
Beautiful Schools Class Locomotive! This is probably one of the modern 4-4-0 locomotives since the other ones were old fashioned. I also liked how this locomotive is classified as a 5P which is a good start for a 4-4-0 locomotive and I'd imagine its the one of the strongest 4-4-0 locomotives in the 1930s. It also reminds me of the Q1 being a 5F of it being the strongest and more modern 0-6-0 locomotives every built in the 1940s. :P
The lighter one is Malachite Green which I think was introduced after the Olive Green livery, maybe late 30s . Certainly Merchant Navies, West Countries etc had Malachite Green when they were built in the 40s
@@SamsTrains I believe that they started changing to Malachite Green about 1938. There would still be some in the olive (Maunsell) green around until nationalisation, as new locos, and completely repainted locos would get the new livery; this would have happened about every 10 years. Edit: During the Second World War they would be painting locos black because of shortage of labour and paint.
nice to see Cheltenham again but it's nice to see that olive livery I didn't know they had that, they are both brilliant models and worth getting, I'd probably have the lighter green for the school class, great video Sam
Thanks a lot mate- yeah it was nice to review that one again! That's fair enough too mate - the lighter one is lovely too! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I got to say Hornby is doing pretty well for the Railroad line. I live the U.S but Hornby does sell British locomotives here so I might by one soon. All in all great review Sam :)
Nice models Sam. No I wouldn't buy one myself, as they are not GWR ;) But Airfix did make a plastic kit of the schools which I did make and sat on my shelf for many years. I prefer the darker livery myself. The darker livery with number on the tender is the Southern 1930's livery. The lighter green is the later 40's livery. Oh yeah the 'E' on Dovers tender stands for Eastliegh, which means it was alocated to the Southerns western division and was under the care of the Eastlegh works for heavy maintenance and repairs. The other two letters you find on Southern locomotives are 'A' for Ashchurch (Eastern Division) and 'B' for Brighton (central division). Keep em coming Jon
Hi Jon, thanks very much for the comment, and the very valuable information! So it was really Bullied and Maunsell's different liveries then, I guess? Thanks for the info on the lettering too - that one was bugging me! :D Cheers mate, Sam :)
Now for some Trainspotting. I saw: your BR black schools class with a white roof, your Drummond t9 in light southern green, your Gcr d11 in BR black, and railroad midland compound, your wrenn lms black 8f, your SDJR 4p 4-4-0. The odd one out was the wrenn 8f because it was among a bunch of 4-4-0,s and Is a wrenn loco among the hornby loco's.
Well done mate - spot on as always! And yes, correct on the 8F too - and good point about the manufacturers too - I'd forgotten that! All the best, Sam :)
I have the exact same model as you have off Cheltenham. It has been struggling going onto a point so aka using the point to get to a bypass lane. The front bogie just derails and then the rest of the loco came off. Did that happen to yours?
Great video Sam and have just ordered "Sevenoaks" along with Claud Hamilton br, I do find your reviews very helpful. Hope these will be good for me as these replace firstly a bachmann patriot which was awful and then a hornby patriot which ceased up! Thanks again!

Hey Sam I was wondering, could you make a video on the Lionel Polar Express model train set because the film is my absolute FAVOURITE I used to watch it all the time when I was little. Thanks

Not familiar with the American term" railroad model" for British railways locos , can you explain. ? I run old toy pre-war o gauge and larger tinplate stuff, German ,French, British, and American. not fussy about detail !
Thanks very much for the kind words - yeah I am very proud of it, but it really is a lot of work to maintain! That's cool - which loco is that then? :D Cheers, Sam :)
I love the schools class, would love to see one in the metal some day but I have great fun driving the Maunsell Steam Era schools class on Train sim, even if the textures are somewhat lacking by modern standards. I'll have to get one of these railroad models & repaint it in BR colours as that's my favourite era
Thanks for the comment mate! Yeah I've never seen a real one in the flesh either! I think they may do a BR railroad one too - if not soon! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Actually that is true! The president of the Southern Railroad Fairfax Harrison made a trip to the UK in 1925 and quite admired the Southern Railway's use of green painted locomotives. The second order of Ps-4 class pacifics was delivered in 1926 in green (a more LNER green though) gold trim and a silver painted smokebox. After that green and gold later with white for the diesels became the standard Southern passenger scheme until Amtrak took over the Crescent in 1979. Sadly only one Ps-4 has been preserved 1401 at the Smithsonian which has pretty much ensured that it'll never see the light of day or the tracks again.
Hmm.. I don't really think much of SR locos, that aren't tank engines, Pacific's or the Q1's, but this model looks pretty good, bit jerky with its slow speed but still impressive. Cheers Avi
If no one else has chimed in (cant be bothered to read all the comments) The shade of green is called 'Malachite' Its also the name of Copper ore. It was very popular with the Southern Railway. Also was said to be a 'Synthetic' colour (as in not based on natural pigments) Cheers.
Thanks a lot Mark! I'm not sure about this being Malachite - isn't that normally a lighter green? Thanks a lot for the info though! :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains This from Wiki: For most of its existence the Southern Railway painted its 2,390 locomotives in a rich yellow/brown Olive green, with plain black frames and wheels, and fittings were lined in black with thin white edges. From 1937, the basic livery was changed by Bulleid to a matt blue/green Malachite green that was similar in appearance to copper carbonate. This was complemented with black wheels and frames with bright yellow lettering and lining-out of the various locomotive fixtures. Some of Bulleid's locomotives had their wheels painted in Malachite green with yellow rims, though this combination was scarcely used. Pre-grouping and Maunsell locomotives were given yellow and black lining to complement the Malachite green livery. During the Second World War, engines that went for overhaul were painted in an overall matt black due to the scarcity of paint and labour. The yellow lettering remained, highlighted with Malachite green. The period leading up to nationalisation in 1948 saw a reversion to Malachite green, albeit in gloss form.
Sorry Im late Sam! Awesome review mate! I rather love the Schools class. you really should visit the MHR to see 925 Cheltenham but atm she is under winter maintenance. Cheers ATB mate, Mark
Thanks Sam. No favourite there, I like both of them equally. With your current rating system you will almost certainly end up with more than one at the top. That will have to be resolved with a run off by you or a viewer poll. David
Great review, bummer my layout isn't based in the southern region cause I like this loco and some other southern trains. Just a question, have u ordered the peckett saddle tank cause people are saying that there one of the most impressive trains in 2016
haha thanks! Yeah that's very true - I assume there were plenty of American 4-4-0s better than these - these were just the most powerful in Europe I think, maybe even just the UK! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video Sam,Lovey Trains but I prefer to Dover a few questions on it.Did it have pick ups in the tender?? Also can the traction wheel be taken off??That's all I have to ask again great video and I also like the painting in the cab I hope Hornby keep doing it!!👍
Hi mate, thanks very much for the comment! Yes it has tender pick-ups, and yes they can be removed - but the loco will be virtually useless without them, since it's so light, and there's not much space for more weight to be added! Cheers, Sam :)
Colours are matter of taste but maybe the text on "Dover"'s tender gives it the edge stylewise. You must have been suspicious getting such a good engine for £30 - you'll need to start having a "Buy of the Month"! Getting more difficult to compare engines, even without low prices, so your calculator is going to be busy! Another good review. Alan.
Hi Alan, yeah you're absolutely right actually! Yeah a little, but it was on bids, and you win some you lose some - I'm normally quite lucky in that most stuff normally works okay, or is easily fixed if not! All the best mate, and thanks for watching, Sam :)
haha! Thanks mate - yeah, two years ago since I made that one! I always leave at least two years before reviewing things again - and there's only a few left that need re-doing before I'm happy! Thanks so much for the kind words, Cheers, Sam :)
911 is the phone number for emergency services in the US. If you still have that one I might have to request it pulling the ambulance train at some point...
Thanks very much mate! Wow - he built one for you!? :D And okay - leave me a new comment tomorrow when its up - I'll check it out! :D All the best, Sam :)
I spotted four other 4-4-0s (is that right?). The odd one out is the 4-6-0 Black 5, Jack of all Trades. I don't have a favourite Southern livery. But I do have a favourite GWR livery: lined Brunswick Green. Broome Manor's coat of paint wins in my favour, if you don't mind my saying so. Hey, I think I've got a name for your Black 5. Why don't you create a video story about Bobby the Black 5? I'm sure everyone of your viewers would love to see it.
Very well spotted Kelly - yeah I think that's right! haha - she certainly is a Jack of all trades! haha bobby the black 5 - good idea!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You know, in the USA there was also a Southern Railroad #925. It was one of 10 class F-8 4-6-0s built by Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, PA in December 1907. They were used for fast express trains. But by the 1920s and 1930s, their duties were later given to the stronger and more modern Ps-4 pacifics and Ts-1 mountains. The first of the F-8s was retired in 1933 and by 1939, #925 was the only one of her class left on the roster. She thundered through WW2 and was retired and sadly scrapped in December 1946, it was last working as a switcher in Richmond, VA. To be honest, I wish the Southern preserved this engine. Ether had it placed on display or sold it to a shortline where it would eventually be preserved. southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/steam/460/sou925richmond835.html
lovely locos really like the design of them my personal fave out of the two is DOVER 911 i prefer the shade of green on it great vid sam

That's awesome, yeah I love the schools too, never seen an N gauge one before though!
All the best,

It is made by a company called Del Prado. They make N-Scale models but they are not for electric tracks.
Got myself a hornby railroad schools class myself this week from the hornby website R3586 "Sevenoaks" with the early BR emblem and I agree it is a great model and the cab interior is painted and detailed on my model too . Superb value for money and a faultless runner on the layout too
Ooh that's good to hear - yes they really are superb value for money - glad you're pleased with yours again! :3

I believe that the odd one is the one with the trucks at the station. I think that it had a 1-3-0 wheel config
Yep, that's right it was the one at the station - though it was an 8F, which is a 2-8-0! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Corks(old quaint school expression)! I found there is one of these schools class named for my old school. I will have to look out for that one.

I think the watercress line recently re painted Cheltenham from sr green to br green
Ooh really? That sounds lovely! :D
Cheltenham has a Malachite Green livery and the other Schools.Class locomotive is in a Maunsell Green
Hi William, thanks very much for that information - that's exactly what I wanted!

A great workhorse of the railways , nice review .......Peter
Thanks Peter - yeah I think so - it sounds like they were very popular with their crews!
Cheers,
Sam :)
i don't know what green the Schools class look better in! Both of them look amazing in green
Thanks mate! They do both look very nice though, you're right! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
The old tender-drive locos, eh? That takes back in the old days of Hornby when the old-tooling model was around.
Yeah that's right - and this model is made with that old tooling, I'm 99% sure!
Thanks a lot for watching,
Sam :)
I've seen a couple of models in real-life at my local model railway dealer.
Oh right cool - yeah, they're very nice! Though I've never had one of the original tender-driven versions!
No. 925 Cheltenham is preserved at the NRM in York.
Now I am going to buy this School class locomotive 👌👌
#911 was built at Eashleigh Works on August 31st, 1932. She became BR #30911 in 1948 and was withdrawn on December 31st, 1962. She was scrapped at Eastleigh works on September 30th, 1963 at the age of 31.
Another sad story - still, 31's not that great of an age!
Thanks again,
Sam :)
Is your favourite schools class second hand. The one with number 911
I think it might have been actually - but I bought it in 'as new' mint condition (I think!)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
I you now have twins like Bill and Ben but then larger the thing I like most about this 1 is the pump thingy on the front idk what they are called
Hmm, the pump?? You mean that separately fitted black piece on the boiler??
Thanks so much for watching too! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains I mean were the rods on the wheels end up on the front those parts that make the wheels move in realle life
Oh! The cylinder chest/valve chest - yeah they do make it look fantastic! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains yep that's the 1 but some models have none I wonder why
Yeah some engines didn't have them - because their cylinders were on the inside, hidden from view!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hey Sam I was wondering, could you make a video on the Lionel Polar Express model train set because the film is my absolute FAVOURITE I used to watch it all the time when I was little.
Thanks
Hi mate, yes I can make a polar express video - though it's not the Lionel one sadly, I do have a Bachmann Berkshire though!
All the best,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Thanks dude! 😀
The railroad models are a lot better than they used to be a couple of years ago sam.
Ahh really?? I've never really had a bad one to be honest - apart from maybe the Black 5 and the 9F, which had dodgy tenders!
All the best,
Sam :)
Sam can you please do a video on the scrap 0-4-0 and maybe a Story
Hi! I've done a few videos with it in - but I doubt I could justify doing a whole video just about it! But yeah - maybe a story would work?!
All the best,
Sam :)
I think I got the locos in the background, only 1 LMS the rest were BR- I hope haha
Not really a fan of SR in general but glad you like it and good review
Hi Mark - almost! That one wasn't the odd one out though! ;)
And thanks for the support anyways mate, and for watching!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hey Sam could you unbox the new Duchess model? I saw it in my Hornby magazine and it looks awesome. I love its colour too.
Hi mate - yeah potentially, I'll have to see if I can get a good price! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains OK glad you saw my comment 😁 I'll be looking out for it!
Not really a fan of southern locos but this one's changed my mind
Ooh that's good to hear - yeah these are absolutely brilliant!! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Is it tender or loco driven?
Just wondering because of traction tires
All the Hornby Railroad ones are loco driven, but they do still use traction tyres!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains ahh right thank you I didn’t know just thinking of buying one they seem pretty good : )
You should test a locos strength and speed
Yeah that could be fun to try - good diea! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm tempted sam ...I really tempted!! great video all the same -all the best :)
haha - go for it! :D
Glad you liked it mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Beautiful looking machine, white accents make an engine look so much smarter
haha do they!? Well thanks for that! lol!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
So beautiful!
Q: If you could only have one of the two, which would you choose?
A: Yes.
haha!! My answer too! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That greyscale photo of loco is very nice! Wanna hang it up on my room :)
School class? how
Eih?!
Did those 2 fall apart upon you handling them?
Luckily these two were fine - it's the Hornby Railways one that did that!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Hello Sam,
You done it again, fantastic review of your Hornby Schools Class Dover.
The light green livery on Cheltenham is called Malachite Green.
I love both the Olive Green and Malachite Green.
Another request, how about having Cheltenham and Dover double heading while hauling a train with Southern Railway Green coaches?
Again as always, fantastic review!

The Cheltenham colour is SR Malachite Green and the Dover is SR Green. Knew you'd like that! lol
haha thanks for that mate - I'm terrible with liveries!
All the best,
Sam :)
Sam I wish I could have trains like yours all I have is diesel locomotive made by bachmann
Thanks very much for the kind words - yeah I am very proud of it, but it really is a lot of work to maintain! That's cool - which loco is that then? :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
its a railroad model but there are painted bits in the cab!!!!!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!!!
I know! And they actually came from Hornby like that too! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
splendid model
Thanks a lot - glad you enjoyed it!
All the best,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
great for a railroads model
Yeah I think it is too!
Thanks for coming,
Sam :)
A southern railway in America and England both with the colors green and yellow. What a coincidence
haha! Yeah it is very odd - it's possible that one was inspired by the other!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Certainly an entertaining video! Well done. :)
Thanks very much mate, glad you enjoyed it!
All the best,
Sam :)
Hmm.. I don't really think much of SR locos, that aren't tank engines, Pacific's or the Q1's, but this model looks pretty good, bit jerky with its slow speed but still impressive.
Cheers
Avi
Hi mate, thanks for the comment - that's fair enough! Yeah, it's definitely not bad for a railroad loco though! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cheers ATB mate,
Mark
Hi mate, please don't worry about that! Yeah I'd love to do that too - maybe in the summer! :D
Thanks a lot for watching,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains Hopefully when 35005 CanPac returns to steam I will be going to see her 😄
Thanks Sam. No favourite there, I like both of them equally. With your current rating system you will almost certainly end up with more than one at the top. That will have to be resolved with a run off by you or a viewer poll. David
Thanks mate - and not a problem, yes they're both so lovely!
haha yeah! Good idea, haha! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Great review, bummer my layout isn't based in the southern region cause I like this loco and some other southern trains. Just a question, have u ordered the peckett saddle tank cause people are saying that there one of the most impressive trains in 2016
Thanks a lot - really glad you liked it! No, sadly I was too late for one of those - haha!
All the best,
Sam :)
Very nice. Good to see you Brits improving a wheel arrangement that is known as the "American".
haha thanks! Yeah that's very true - I assume there were plenty of American 4-4-0s better than these - these were just the most powerful in Europe I think, maybe even just the UK!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
thank you mate
No problem! :)
Thanks mate really big fan
No - thank you! Much appreciated! :)
am a big fan of the railroad range but a mo price is silly at mo
stunning locos sam
arp
Yeah agreed mate - I think they sometimes forget who the railroad models are for!
Thanks a lot for the kind words, and for watching!
Sam :)
Cool, you say every train is your favourite. But its hard to have one, with how many there are :)
haha! Yeah I know I do - I need to stop! Yeah I struggle - I change my mind an awful lot too! :D
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
Cheers,
Sam :)
All the best mate, and thanks for watching,
Sam :)
nice video I remember your original Cheltenham review to be honest this review is better by a small amount wich shows how good your videos are.
haha! Thanks mate - yeah, two years ago since I made that one! I always leave at least two years before reviewing things again - and there's only a few left that need re-doing before I'm happy! Thanks so much for the kind words,
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains your very welcome
I like the olive green engine.
Me too mate- lovely that one!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
911 is the phone number for emergency services in the US. If you still have that one I might have to request it pulling the ambulance train at some point...
haha that's true - very good idea actually! xD
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
Sam, he is on TH-cam!
Okay mate, thanks! I'll look at that! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hey Sam's trains could you do a review of a mail wagon please
Yep! Check out my video of the Percy train set! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
That is a cool locomotive Sam! And my father have made my locomotive! :D
I'm going to make Tomorrow a video with my locomotive!
Thanks very much mate! Wow - he built one for you!? :D
And okay - leave me a new comment tomorrow when its up - I'll check it out! :D
All the best,
Sam :)
Hi Sam,
He have made my loc, because it was broken. :D
It is Tomorrow on TH-cam, I send you a commend when the video is on TH-cam! ;)
Roy
I love the schools class, have u got a n class? I do recommend it , oskar
Hi Oskar, glad you like the locos! Yeah I do have an N class - I like them very much!
All the best mate,
Sam :)
hi sam. great video as usual. where do you buy your locos from so cheap?
Thanks mate! Glad you liked it - all over the place really, but I spotted this on Ebay, so snapped it up!
All the best,
Sam :)
This is my dream loco in my dream livery
Ooh fantastic - I can definitely recommend these! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Its supposed to be Malachite Green.
I see! Yeah I guess it's reasonably close anyway!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
The highest speed ever recorded for the School's were 95.7 mph!
Blimey - well that's very impressive for locomotives that size!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hi Sam, I prefer the Olive Green loco as it stands out more and looks like Plymouth Argyle FC, Great video as always,
Chris :)
Thanks Chris - yeah me too, I think it looks more realistic and less toy-like too!
Thanks so much for watching,
Cheers,
Sam :)
The liveries are SR olive green and sage green
Ahh duly noted - thanks for the info Daniel! :D
The only southern loco that I like
Oh right! You don't like Bullied's pacifics then?! Or the N Class?! ;)
Thanks a lot for watching!
Cheers,
Sam :)

Oh right! That sounds very interesting - I'll definitely do some reading on those! Thanks again for the information,
Cheers,
Sam :)

Thanks very much - yeah I think so too! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)

Ahh perfect - thanks for letting me know! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
