I saw that episode and was in complete amazement at the sheer generosity, emotion, fear, and love for humanity these wonderful, fabulous, caring gentleman had for this woman. They had such respect and understanding for her. This doesn't happen much in the World that we live in today. I've been in the same situation, I lost my father and had to move after nearly fourty year's. I'm not a hoarder but we had accumulated so much over the years and believe me, no one cares. They would have put my belongings on the street. These guys give me hope in humanity. I would love to have the opportunity to tell them that they did all they could and then some. They even cried for her. I would like to say thank you to everyone that went out of their way for her. It gives me hope.

Margaret Wardlow if you know her and watched the episode then you would see that she at least knew that her diagnosis was extremely severe and that she felt bad for her because of how bad it had gotten. She knew that as a doctor she would have had to spend a lot longer time with her as a patient that she just couldn’t provide in that short time frame. She cried towards the end because she did feel so bad for her. Mental Illness is real whether you like it or not.

I'm watching this episode now and I'm getting so frustrated watching it because she has no legal right to even be on the property. So many people enabled her and were intimidated by her. She needs mental health help seriously. She's going to have a breakdown whether you're nice or mean and someone needs to step up to the plate and take control. They were waaay too nice to her. Tough love is needed.
When dealing with my dad who is a hoarder, I put most of his tools online to sell, ordered a dumpster and removed a lot of stuff all by myself. Also, I called the junk people to come get the rest all while my dad cursed me out. Two years later he thanked me and realized what a hole he was in.

This was, of all the shows I've over the years watched, one of the most evocative episodes of the series. Her illness was so pervasive! The situation one of the saddest. And unique, with new owners of the home (and hoard) being involved in the process. Michael and Eric were such sweethearts! What generosity of spirit. The people who helped Sandra that final morning, they too were kind and selfless. Well, there was that one man who stormed off but I get that he was not going to tolerate Sandra's treatment. Understandably.

I think the hardest part to watch is that somewhere in there, Sandra is still working her legal angles to keep the property. On one hand, she's accepting the new owners' kindness and on the other hand, she's still trying to put legal roadblocks in front of them to keep their house away from them. On one hand, she's accepting help from Hoarders for on-the-spot therapy and to clean out the house but on the other hand, she has no real intention of leaving. There's a sense of entitlement in there...and it seems like it's been there her whole life since her brothers (all THREE grown men) can't even figure out how to stand up to her and get power of attorney if necessary. It wouldn't have been that hard to prove that was mentally incapable of handling business dealings with a few inspections and pictures of what she did to a formerly beautiful property, the conditions she was living in, and the dangers inside the house.

Eric and Michael were such genuinely compassionate people. And boy did Sandra test that compassion.
I get that some of it's mental illness, but I guarantee you some of it definitely isn't. I've met people like her in my life, people who are just sweet as pie... Until you say something they don't want to hear, or refuse to do something they want you to do, and then they become absolutely venomous. They've learned that if they can't get what they want from you with honey, they will bully you into submission.

The tail is wagging the dog here. How could that many adults be pushed around by one very old lady ? All that bending over backwards to ease her pain, it made it scary. I thought they all were trying to give her a stroke. The outcome was preset. I can't imagine working in a nursing home, where they have to deal with mental illness daily.

    • @JaneDoe-zr4px
      @JaneDoe-zr4px 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I agree. I know everyone's heart was in the right place but the truly humane thing would've been to minimize her suffering asap. Legally remove her from the property, and dispose of everything as the owners see fit - no involvement by the old lady whatsoever. If they still want to give her the money from auction proceeds, fine. Remember, they not only bought the house, but all the contents. Everyone involved knew she had no way to store anything, so allowing her to pick thru and create that mess on the street, was asinine. It made a great tv show but honestly, this way was much more cruel. I also agree that her running all those people around was disturbing.

She may be sick in the hoarding capacity, but beyond that, she knew EXACTLY what she was doing anyway. It’s kinda hard to have compassion for someone who goes out of their way to mistreat those around her trying to help her out anyway 🤷‍♀️. If you've watched the full episode, that is the perfect example of how dealing with an unreasonable individual goes.
Reason, logic and empathy DON'T WORK, period!
The only thing that works when dealing with such an individual is wielding unbending authority and not going into discussion with them.
Discussing doesn't work, dialogue doesn't work.
If one party refuses to accept reality, conversation can't happen.
The only thing you can hope for is that when the time comes for you to have to deal with an unreasonable individual, that you too have the power and authority to forcibly take action.
If you don't; you better wash your hands of it and don't even engage with them.
Her ex-husband was a very very smart man; apart form letting it get that far in the first place. He didn't have the authority and power and when he realised that, he removed himself from the toxic situation.
Conclusion: the outcome will always be the same when dealing with unreasonable people:
    A) You keep trying dialogue and reason ... and they keep dragging it all out until they've worn you down and gotten what they want.
    B) You want to go past dialogue but don't have the power nor the authority. Only one thing remains ... ignore and abandon the situation completely.
    C) You have the authority and power to take action on your terms and after basic curtsies fail, you use that superior position to solve the issue forcefully.
    D) You have the authority and power and yet don't use it. You're now part of the problem and are actively contributing to prolonging the toxic situation which does no good to anyone.
    That's it.
There is no fantasy ending where a "good talk" solves it all.
Shaking hands and make up; a pipedream.
The only reason why this situation with Sandra got dragged out, harming everyone including Sandra herself in the process, is that they never put their foot down and executed their threats.
They just kept and kept on treating her as a sane person who's opinion still holds value in the matter at hand.

Anyone cringe when she yelled for her crew members names like she was calling pigs "suey!"
And then again I cringed when she yelled at this older black gentleman and said "YOU NEED TO LISTEN!' And he was so disturbed he quit and walked off. Respectfully so. I hope that all the people that tried to help her got paid by her in some way but I highly doubt it. I felt for everyone. Even Matt the hoarder expert lost his cool in the episode and freaked out on her that Dr zazio started crying she had to remind him she has an illness. This episode was so mind boggling

At the end of the episode it said she earned $14,000 at auction for the good things she had. Problem is a lot of stuff was collected by the city unsorted and then trashed. The same thing seemed to happen after she drove away from the property for the last time, i.e. more stuff from the house was just trashed because the artificial deadline was up. She probably could have made another $30,000 if the a few more days were given to this operation. But to be clear, I do not support hoarding.

COURTNEYS AUNT SARA well in all fairness she spent alot of time fighting for her rights to keep the property. Everyones mad because they say she "took advantage" of the system. In reality the new owners bought the property knowing full well she was a squatter and hoarding BEFORE they bought the house. She still had a court date REGARDLESS what the lawyer said and in reality even if she was going to lose the house; she could have been selling her stuff until that date. As much as we see that she is a hoarder it is still her stuff since she still has a court date due. In another perspective the new owners are responsible for her property as in the agreement they signed. Blaming her for having her stuff on the curb is wrong. They should have just kept selling her stuff until the court date. Dont blame her. Blame the new owners who knew full well what they were buying. If it was me, I'd help her sell her stuff and let her live in the mansion.

    • @tibodog10
      @tibodog10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@willshine3963 you are incorrect on bunch of things here. Michael and Eric (the new owners) became legal owners of the house and hoard the moment they filed their deed, therefore Sandra's court date (if there was an actual court date) would be a moot point because she no longer had a legal interest in the property since in no longer belonged to her. Sanda fibbed/flat out lied about having warehouses on hold or being in negotiations for warehouses so I seriously doubt she had an actual court date. Plus according to her brother, her basis for fighting the foreclosure was completely incorrect to begin with. The federal government's bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac didn't pay off her mortgages making her balance zero, which is what she believed. Because she was able to claim pauper status she received a ton of postponements/extensions resulting in the 3 yr fight before she was foreclosured on, including her belongings she left in/on the property. So, the new owners did everything right and showed Sandra more patience and kindness then she would have received from anyone else so your criticism of them is quite unfair.

This was sad. It was one of the first episodes that really made me look at hoarding as a mental illness. For this woman to lose her home and not face the reality of what she caused is very sad. In the end she lost everything, her home that she loved so much and all of her belongings. So sad 😢

I've seen many people lose their homes for non payment. In my state it can take up to a year to get them out. Some people are not in the position to sell their homes. They just owe more than what they are worth. Others should have sold it and taken the little money they could get out of it.

This episode left me quite depressed. What a horrible situation for all the people involved. I understand perfectly well that hoarding is a mental condition... however, in this particular case, I wonder if the woman couldn't have been taken to another place after the agreement of auctioning the salvageable stuff and giving her the money. Since she wasn't the owner any longer, this could have relaxed and eased all the job. It was obvious things were to get do hard if she was in the middle. She showed her temper right from the start.

I think in reality in the same situation, except no show taping, the new owners would have had her removed when she sat her chair in the path of the workers insisting she see everything. They put up with her narcissistic shenanigans because they needed all the drama for the hoarders show. The good thing is this episode did show that hoarders who cannot, will not change and refuse help have a dire consequence and outcome. I know the show is about the psychology behind hoarding and steps to improve with help but there should be at least a few more shows of the consequences when you've taken every opportunity and snubbed your nose at it. I watch this episode over and over. Another favorite was Laura season 7 episode 10 because the abused mate finally stood up for themselves and kicked the abusing hoarder out EXCEPT apparently the dude was on Dr Phil 2 years later in the same predicament! Grow a pair buddy!!

This episode hit different to other episodes. She strikes me as a narcissist which probably overlaps with the hoarding. This is the end result. 40 years of possessions loaded up in dumpsters and living in van, rumor is she died in 2020. Really made me think about capitalism and consumerism and the system as a whole, mental illness and Healthcare. She had it all -a business, a mansion and ended up where? For what?
