Yanagisawa AWO1 vs AWO10 Alto Sax Review

  • We discuss and demonstrate the differences in these two popular Yanagisawa Alto Sax models. The AWO1 is the first in the range and the AWO10 is the next step up so is sometimes regarded as the 'better' one. We discuss this and perhaps throw a little curveball in to the thought process on that theory.

    Because they’re Yanagisawa horns, part of what you’re paying for has nothing to do with sound or playability, but the sturdiness of how they’re manufactured that help the horns maintain themselves longer and are easier on maintenance.

    Thanks Dawkes for uploading this video. It's really helpful to have comparisons like these when considering a new horn. Please make more videos like this! Thumbs up.

    I bought an AW01 yesterday at Dawkes (opening day 4th July 2020), but didn't try the AW010. I compared it with the AW02 (the equivalent bronze) and Yamaha 62 and for me it felt the easiest to play. It should be noted I'm what I'd describe as an advanced beginner. Only playing Sax seriously for 4 months, but already had a lot of musical theory knowledge as a decent keyboard player. If you're within driving distance I highly recommend a visit to Dawkes, great staff, and very helpful and friendly.

      I'm thinking about the Aw02, I'm a true beginner though. It just sounds better to me... what did you think?

    Can you please review the sterling silver models new and older? So many combinations it would be great to hear a side by side of the the various silver horns.

    Very good. I would take the AW01 and ... change the ceiling of that room :))) Thanks for the good videos!

      Yep, we agree on the ceiling. Maybe if you buy the Sax we can afford to change it :))) Thanks for checking out the video :)

    Perhaps part of the confusion regarding “numbers” you refer to is because you are not differentiating between letters and numbers. The first “o” in the model number is indeed a letter. Hence AWO1 (oh one) and the model up is the AWO10 (oh ten or - oh one zero). Hope that clears things up for everyone. It took me a while to work out Yanagisawa’s logic, lol.

    I used to have an A991 and loved it. Going by the sound here I now want an AW010. I like the mellow. Is it much different in weight to the A991? I can't seem to find the weights online

    Please, wich one gives the most resistence( in a good way( and wich one is the most free-blowing?? Even tought the awo10 have the under slung neck, is the awo10 still the one that gives more resistence?

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we would say the AWO10 gives more resistance because (a) it's heavier and (b) it has the attached brass straps all down the body that the pillars are attached to, instead of just pillar to body.

    i tried yanagisawa w01 and w010 in a store but i don't feel any difference. what should i buy the 1 or the 10. Is it worth it to buy the 10 for more durability or not?

      Have you been paying attention to the velocity the instruments produce the sound, and their overall reactiveness? Here in the video, AW010 intonates with a bit of delay (instrument has more mass). That is preferred in the classical genre because slower intonation often means better stability of the fully developed note - especially good for novice players and the genres of music that prefer uniformity of the tone.
      But, it also means less flexibility in moulding the sound when it is forming, which seasoned players like to utilise in other genres. So it is quite paradoxical - a more expensive saxophone is better suited for the beginners, to boost their confidence, and yet it costs more. I personally liked the flexibility and immediacy of the AW01, the cheaper one, which resonates more and sings with a sweeter voice.

    Does the aw020 have metal or nylon resonators?

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi..Yes, the AWO20 has the Pisoni PRO-112 pads which have the metal resonator. The AWO10 has the PRO-110 which has the plastic resonator. The metal resonators on the O20 offer a bit more vibrancy back which suits when the body is bronze as that tends to be 'softer' sounding, i.e. they are combo'd that way for a nice mix.

      @@dawkesmusic great video BTW- I own a TW02 UL for about 2 weeks now and I love it- first time playing Yanis- would it be worth to change the pads to the PRO-112? I played Mark VIs, TM Custom, Cannonball, etc in the past but I find the Yanis have the closest sound to a good vintage VI or SBA and again wonder if there is a noticeable difference with the metal resonators.

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some players report a noticeable difference, others feel it's more subtle. It's quite extreme to get a new horn re-padded so in our opinion we'd suggest sticking as you are. If you want to introduce a little extra punch or brightness there are more cost effective ways to do it with reed choice/lig/mouthpiece etc.

    which alto is easiest for hitting pure high notes?

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No such thing I'm afraid, just plenty of practice and the best reed/mouthpiece combo for you. Be wary of anyone who promises you otherwise :)

    I know it’s out of topic but speaking personally (I want y’alls opinion). I’m upgrading sax and I’m thinking between a custom EX and AW010 and I want some advice. Or can y’all make a video comparing them please!?
    Thanks!

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bit of a personal choice so the best advice is to go and try them at a store (if possible), or try them via mail order. Both are perfectly capable of the highest standards of playing, arguably the 875EX Custom is our favourite as we think it's great in all musical situations, extremely well put together, plus you have the option of changing to any of the Yamaha Custom Necks (V1, E1, C1) in the future to further customise the sound.

      dawkesmusic last question... I’ve tried out the Custom EXII but not the W010, and as u said the EX is very versatile but for a more “classical music approach” which would you recommend/prefer? Thanks again for the last answer

    • @dawkesmusic
      @dawkesmusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 875EX was designed in part with Dr Eugene Rousseau - probably the godfather of Classical Sax in the 20th Century so I think that answers the question :)
