I bought the YAS-62 III for my son as his second saxophone from his YAS-26 beginning sax when he started high school for staying in band. Mainly because I couldn’t afford the custom z that was $1000 more money and as a single mom, I was only buying 1 more saxophone for the rest of my life! So, I bought him a professional sax but one that I could afford. I soon found out that I had made the best choice because EVERYONE LOVES HIS SAXOPHONE! I have upgraded the sound with different mouthpieces, ligatures, neck screws, and resonance weights, and now he is a senior in high school with a professional musician’s tool, the rest is on him right?
By the way loved the cookie analogy! I am going to use it!
You made an EXCELLENT choice! My parents gave me a 62 Tenor when I finished my bachelors degree back in the 1990s. It's still my favorite tenor on earth. They are magnificent horns, you did your son a great favor. Say hello to the young saxophonist for me!
The 62iii is not going to hold him back that’s for sure. It’s a great horn.
The 62 is Yamaha's most desirable saxophone. We used them in the 198O's and 90's in the USAF Bands. Indestructible, fantastic value and great intonation! Great for jazz, and great for classical!!! Almost a copy of a Mark 6
Good morning Sir. At 62 years ten months old actually l luckily acquired a 62 series 111 alto saxaxophone. I am still celebrating my personal gift for my sixty third birth anniversary. I also acquired a Selmer series 11 tenor. To say l am the happiest saxophonist in the world right now would be an understatement. Keep up the good work sir in a few months l will be in the USA and l certainly will make contact with you. Keep up the good work Sir.

With a number of pro vintage saxes, my favorite is a Kohlert 55 Alto. As a saxophone major, I had a King 613. I practiced 3 to 5 hours per day. Deficiencies in my saxophone certainly was a strategy for making me a better musician. Loved demo.
I played it for 5 years in my school. And I have to say that is the best for me.

Fantastic review! I can certainly vouch for the build of these horns. Yamaha 62s are road dogs. My YAS 62 dates from circa 1981 and looks and plays amazingly well. My sax tech comments on how nice to play it is every time it goes in for a service.
That's a 40 year old Yamaha! These things are just built so well. In college, I borrowed a 62R soprano - one piece curved neck. I miss it to this day. Sweetest sound and so easy to play. Hope you're having a great summer, Mark. Happy Practicing!

I've been using the an lacquered YTS-61 for over twenty years and it has never let me down. Instead replacing it with a Custom Yamaha horn I changed the neck over to the solid silver C1 neck
and it's superb! ;)

It's an amazing horn!
I have a Series 2 jubilee edition; after play testing (for someone looking to buying a new sax) the YAS-480, I instantly regretting buying into the hype of Selmer models; and we're talking here about in intermediate model from Yamaha... Like Dr Wally said I trust Japanese products. Now I am looking into trading my Series 2 alto and my series 3 tenor for Yamaha horns. After watching this review, I will test the 62iii horn and see how much it "speaks" to me.
Great review. As a private teacheIr Yamaha is what I recommend to all of my students, even though i play Selmer MVIs. They makI, in my view, the best student instruments out there. A little story: a few years ago i was in the local music store trying out intermediate saxes for one of my students. They didn't have a Yamaha but they did have an Eastman and a Cannonball. I played them both, and liked the Cannonball better. Then i spotted a Yamaha 875. Just for my own curiosity I asked to try it out. I could only play it for a few minutes and quickly returned it. If I had had played it any longer I would have whipped out my credit card and taken it home, and then suffered the consequences. It was that good. For a Selmer guy I fell in love with the 875. Maybe some day.
That's good to know! The keywork is fantastic, wonder if you'd miss the "Selmer Sound" eventually?
I bought a YAS 62IIIS back in Dec. of '19. It was a Christmas Gift to myself after playing an old Buescher Aristocrat 200 in High School back in the '80s. I absolutely love it. I actually liked the silver better than the regular lacquer. To me, it sounded fuller and a bit brighter. The regular lacquered felts it lacked a certain punch to it when i play-tested it. Still, it was a good horn. I just gravitated more to the silver-plated one. My old Buescher is now being used by my son for his HS Jazz band. Those old student were horns tanks and they sounded so much better than the cheap student horns available now.
I was hesitating between a Buffet Crampon SDA and a Yamaha 62 for alto. Finally I chose the first One. Quite affordable as a professional saxophone and sounds fantastic.
Anyway, I have got a tenor Yamaha 62 an I am so happy with It! 🤩

Yamaha has always been my go to brand for anything. I bought a used purple logo 62 alto over the summer, and it plays so beautifully. I used to play on a Custom EXII from my University, but I honestly prefer my 62 over the EX.

I play YTS 62, no regret buying it, long lasting, comfortable keys. It will sound even better after consistent practice and upgrade the mouthpiece to Selmer S80 C** and Vandoren bluebox.
How does the Selmer S80 C** compared with Yamaha 4C and 5C

I'm in the UK and have played Sax and flute for 50+ years as semi professional...unfortunately my hearing is poor now which has impacted greatly on my confidence etc. Only today have I found these videos of Dr Wally and I think they are brilliant! He is a natural communicator and a wonderful player who 'cuts right to the chase,' no bull...t and totally inspiring. I found myself agreeing with all his comments and various reviews- I love his pragmatism too-excellent!

Thank you so much for the review! I already have a "used" Tenor 62III, which I bought from a dealer; L&M. I have a "used" Alto 62III coming from back east to BC (I guess you don't "trust" me already) ;) It's apparently about 5 years old.
As I'm getting them through L&M, the alto will be fully checked (serviced) before I take it and both saxes will (do) have a full warranty. I really like the tenor and I'm looking forward to holding and playing that alto. I'm using a D'addario D6M and a Legere Signature 2 reed on the tenor. I have a D5M for the alto, with a Legere Studio Cut 1.5 reed. That could change, once I get the Yammy. I should mention that I started late...pushing 70 now and I've been playing less than 2 years. I'm still a total beginner and without going into a long story; I have to play with no teeth! That being said; I've been making good progress across the board from watching these sax videos on TH-cam and I have to say that my "sound" is just about where I want it. I'm trading in my current Selmer La Voix alto, towards the Yammy and I have to say that although the Selmer is a decent horn; I'm very anxious to start playing that Yammy. I will have it sometime before the end of the month. As a relatively poor person; I seem to have some extraordinary money management skills! I feel rich! I've only watched a couple of your videos. I'm going to have a look at your free exercises. I expect that I won't be disappointed. You obviously know what you're doing!

@@drwallysax Thank you for the reply. There's no need to explain your 'joke' about Canadians. One thing I didn't mention; is that I play by ear; literally. I've been deaf in my right ear since 1980. I can figure out notes on the staff; but that's about it. I can't read sheet music. I will definitely let you know about the YAS 62III, once I receive it! I've played a few Yamahas...had a YAS 23 early on and the way I see it - unless the sax is broken (not likely); I'm going to love it! The following info is superfluous... Next month I will be 70 and early September will mark my 30th anniversary of sobriety. I'm sure that many musicians can relate. This sax will be a very special gift to myself on this occasion! Remembering what my life used to be like and what it is now...is almost indescribable!
Yamaha can compete with the best in anything they choose to. I've lovingly abused my 61 tenor since 1979, have 2 82z altos, 6 receivers, outboard engine, 2 synths, Dig. effects, powr amps, amps.... sold my dirt bike, emerg. generator.... tough to beat in the aggregate. Nice pianos, too. You, young man have a beautiful tone. Excellent channel.
Good review. I own the tenor version. It's a great horn, can't see myself moving away from it any time soon.
I’ve owned my 62 tenor since 1999! I love trying new horns, but have yet to find a tenor I like better. I’m with ya man.

Both Yanagisawa AW01 and Yamaha 62III were highly recommended. I tried out both Saxophone. Feels good, but I finally settled for the Yamaha 62III based on your recommendation. Why pay twice when the Yamaha 62III can get the job done. Besides I have watched this video more than 3x. This is my first Pro Sax. Thanks Professor.

I was looking to buy a new horn (alto), but couldn't help looking first for a minty older one. I had never played a Yamaha and started to do some research (which is mostly opinions). I had found a very minty 2011 62 II and based on an English woodwind repair technician's "opinion" it was still a good horn compared to the "purple logo" mark I. He certainly had some opinions about the mark III, but those are probably dated. I find the horn (more opinions) bright and easy to blow. I was very lucky as it was like new. I still prefer my 1976 Selmer mark VII. To me the upper range is much sweeter. I know there are some boo's and hisses out there, but I still think the mark VII is an excellent horn. Long and short of it, you can't go wrong getting a Yamaha 62. The used ones are pretty close to the price of the new ones.

I have a 1972 mkVI alto that I bought in 8th grade (1978??) For $750. Anyhow, about 3 years ago I picked up a barely used YAS62iii that was about 2 years old. Limited Edition...what they called VB (vintage bronze colored lacquer with silver plated keys and neck). Sharp horn. I wanted to try out a newish Yamaha and possibly see if it might replace my Selmer...(selling the Selmer would have paid for the 62 and a pretty nice tenor to boot). I took it to a local shop and had it checked over. I spent some time switching between the two..and I gotta say..I wasn't really impressed. it seemed to play flat in the upper register and didn't play that well specially in the altissimo. I chalked it up to me just being used to playing my vintage Selmer. To shorten the story.. I decided to sell it and took it to a different music shop first to have checked over. When I got it back it played fantastic... screaming altissimo, in tune. Alas, I still sold it (I couldn't justify owning two real nice altos) for the same price I paid for it $2100. It had a brighter more focused sound..and I did prefer the more mellow tone of my VI. But I do miss the modern setup of the palm keys. Only thing that bugged me was the low right hand pinky D# had kind of a sharp edge on it..I'm sure a tech could have rounded it off a bit though.
I have a YAS-52. Yes - you saw that right YAS-52 which is touted as an intermediate level sax. It is in great shape but I'm seriously thinking of moving up to the YAS-62iii which has such a great reputation. Or -- I might be tempted to go up to the YAS 875EXii but that requires serious thought to go there at this stage. Thanks for the great review Dr Wally. Oh yes, I'm Canadian and can be trusted - Lol
I got a used 62 tenor (engraved logo) when I started college (2000), my first "pro" horn. During my third year my new sax prof told me I had to get an alto if I wanted to continue as a music major because "that's where the repertoire is!" The EX had just come out, and I bought one. It's a great horn! But now, all these years later I'm trying to figure out how to give my EX alto the same depth of character my 62 tenor has. Considering a V1 or maybe even a new 62 neck. As for the 62 tenor, I'll take that horn to my grave!
Richard Hogg I’m with you. My 875EX is heavily modified, had the lacquer removed and use a gold plated M1 neck. I love my alto, but this 62iii I tested was just outstanding.

Great review. I´m a beginner alto sax player who owns a much cheaper YAS 280, and although I can´t justify the price of a pro horn, it´s nice to see what I´m missing. (I´m quite happy with my 280, though). I´m really enjoying your channel, specially now that I know that someone else understands that raisings cookies are the pineapple pizza of the cookie world.

I like your way of thinking. To me raisings on cookies, as well as pinaple on pizza is like fish tacos. Has nothing to do with real tacos that came from secluded parts of Mexico where there was no fish. Only red meats, chicken and corn for tortillas. Lol cheers y'all.

Great source of info. Have you heard of Paul Mauriat saxes. They are made in Taiwan. They seems to be well-made and high quality... I just bought a Yamaha YAS 62 III alto a few months ago. It's very nice.
I like the P. Mauriat saxes. In my brief encounter, they just didn't "feel" as well made as a similarly priced Yamaha. I'm also not a big fan of the "big bell," feels like unnecessary weight and a marketing gimmick to me. But, I have some friends who LOVE them. happy practicing!
Solid horns. The Yamaha 62 is neutral in the best use of the word. All color of sound comes from the player and the mouthpiece selection. If you’re in school switching between classical and modern music, this is your horn. I play a Cannonball vintage reborn tenor, and I love it. Considering an alto of the same make. But I am far removed from music school. If I was in school, the 62 is the choice hands down.

I haven't spent enough time on them to give a full "review" but liked the one I played? The keywork felt like Cannonball/Eastman to me - not bad, but not as refined as Yamaha. It certainly looks beautiful, and the people I know who play them sound great!

The analogy itself is a chocolate chip cookie! Easy to understand, does its job concisely and precisely, maybe not the most flamboyant but doesn't need to be.

Thanks very much for the review. The samples with the AL3 and the mute in the bell sound fabulous, somewhat bassoon like. How much of that tone is due to the mute?
Hey Joa, VERY little tonal difference with the mute. It's big purpose is to lower the pitch of the bell tones (which are incredibly sharp on saxophone). Above low D - there's almost no effect at all. Great question!

How does it stand in comparisson to Yanagisawa's AW01? The 62 has always been my dream horn. Even playing all the brands in one room at the music store, I landed on the 62. I'm just not sure which one to get from the known variations.
Let me first say that I am shocked to hear that you're biased against oatmeal/raisin cookies LOL Secondly, I own a Yamaha 62iii, and really have enjoyed it. I'm a Selmer defector! You personally get as good of a classical sound out of this instrument as I've heard in a long time. I've always said the the resistance on a Selmer Mark VI made it a better choice for classical playing. I may eat my words! If I played more classical style, I may have opted for the 875ex, but the 62iii more than meets my needs. I do prefer the custom neck!
I have a Jumbo Java A45 and Otto Link Tone Edge 6* mouthpiece. Do you think both of these mouthpieces would work well with this saxophone?
Thanks for sharing it. Could you please let me know the differences between YAS-62 iii and YAS-62 04? Someone says 04 replaces iii; others say they are exactly the same but iii is for US market while 04 is for European market. Confused :-(

Ok but how does it compare to it's more direct competitor the yanagisawa AW01 etc? I'm carefully considering both at the moment as I look for my first pro horn.

Not much difference in sound, but the silver will tarnish quickly if you don't keep it very clean. Personally, it drives me nuts!

Funny you should ask, I'm reviewing the 875EXii right now. I really prefer it to the 82Z, and it feels a bit more refined than the 62. If money were no object, I'd definitely go for the 875EXii. Good question.

how does this compare to the purple logo version?
EDIT: The YAS-62 Purple Logo has more warmth and complexity to the tone than the later 62-II or III versions (which are more clear and round). So many players are looking for that one alto that does everything well, and sounds warm and interesting.
Here’s the best kept Yamaha secret alto: the YAS380 but with a YAS480 neck. On mine, I removed the plastic key buttons and installed real mother of pearl replacements $17.00 a set from China. I also fitted a mother of pearl G# key touch. The horn is great. It was $1,350 shipped to New Jersey from Japan.
What is the difference between this Saxophone and the Mark Vl ? Also is there any difference in the build quality and most importantly the sound.
I've gone from struggling with the Flute three years ago, and have started back onto the Clarinet just in the last week, and am gradually very slowly building up my stamina with dealing with a chronic condition.
Which would be easier to blow generally: the alto or tenor sax, Wally ?
Take this with a grain of salt, as I only play alto, but I believe tenor requires more air and is not as easy to play.
@@rohankurani4974 I would say tenor needs more air, but alto and soprano need better intonation/embouchure

I think the YAS280 is a fantastic student horn. The only issue my students have had is a rather pronounced stickiness to the G# key (common with most student horns). Set of key leaves props would fix that, of course. I just don’t think you can go wrong with the Yamaha!

Honestly? I prefer your sound when playing the Eastman 52nd St. Not sure which horn you think feels better though.
To be fair, this was an earlier video - still experimenting with microphones etc. The Eastman has a "fuller" sound, but I like the Yamaha keyword much better. They're both great, especially at that price. I'd be happy with either as my primary horn. Happy practicing, Sheryl!

@@rohangore for your purposes, I think I Meyer 5M would be your best bet. It's a great mouthpiece and you'll have a bit of cash left over for reeds. Happy practicing!

Those different mouth pieces certainly change the tone.
They certainly do, but I'm also drastically altering my voicing and aesthetic approach!
Interesting that Yanagisawa was not mentioned in comparison.
Don't see many Yanagisawas in my neck of the woods. I understand they're fine horns, but it's just not something my students seem to ask about (so I haven't investigated). Not sure what their current market share looks like, but at conferences and festivals, I just seem to see gazillions of Yamahas and Chinese horns.
Also, this channel and my podcast are a bit of fun that I hope benefits my students, but I can't justify losing money on shipping/restocking fees for what is essentially a hobby (TH-cam, not my teaching). Happy practicing!
For my money, this is a terrific horn. If you can’t play this horn well, check your ego at the door and play better. Lol. She’ll do whatever you need her to do, and always with a beautiful, focused sound and minimum fuss.
Dr Wally, .... Is there really a difference between the vintage reference and the gold version of the Yas 82Z ?
Hey Roberto, not quite sure what you mean? Are you asking the difference between finishes of the 82Z? By vintage, do you mean unlacquered?

@@r.g.saxone gotcha! It FEELS different. To my experience, unlacquered horns ring a little more and feel more free blowing. BUT, it's a fairly small difference compared to mouthpiece, neck bore and taper, etc. If I were buying a Z today, I'd go for the lacquered (gold). It's a VERY free blowing horn already and the gold lacquer will keep it looking brand new for ages. Great question!

Hey Willis, I don't really review student instruments. I generally recommend buying student yamahas or conn selmers. Just too pricey for what they are (in my seldom humble opinion)
Is it still recommended to "kick the tires" and play in the store before the purchase?
If you can, make an effort to do so, even to check if the ergonomics match your hands. Although, I didn't play my YAS-62 when I bought mine in the mid 80's. Still playing it today. The new 62's have some improvements, which is nice.
For your classical setup I notice that you are using a mute in the bell. Would you mind to comment?
Marco Guevremont not at all! I use it to lower the pitch of Bb1 and B1, which due to the bell opening, are very sharp on all saxophones. It also dampens the higher overtones of the lowest notes, giving a bit more focused sound. I’ll be doing a review video of a new mute on the market in the coming weeks. Great Question!
@@drwallysax I did not want to go there, but in my opinion most modern horns are based on a derivative of the Selmer Mark VI design which, depending on the year, had definitely some long tube intonation challenges. In general I find that vintage American horns like the Conns and the Bueschers have much easier end of tube intonation tendencies, if one forego limitations with their ergonomics. I'll be looking forward to your review of mutes, I admit I used one for years on my vintage Selmer SBA alto until I switched to a larger chamber mouthpiece that helped minimize the end of tube tendencies. Great review. I had a 62 II for years and then 'upgraded' to a Custom Z Un Lacquered. Honestly there isn't a massive difference, and the average ear probably couldn't distinguish the 2 with a blind-fold test. I just like the look of no lacquer and the resonance under my fingers.
I think you nailed it. My alto is an 875EX that I had the lacquer removed. Like you, I just prefer the way it looks and "feels." After playing this 62iii for the week, I'm tempted to "downgrade."

@@drwallysax For sure. There were a lot of technical improvements to the 62 but those 61's are the dark horse of the yamaha history. I have a lot of people tell me they thought I was playing a Selmer. Although I find that's sometimes just what people ask who don't know a lot of other saxophone brands.

Welcome aboard! I'd definitely go for the Yamaha. Even the absolute base model is built VERY well. Great intonation, good mechanics. They're not exciting, but they just WORK. Best of luck!

I am currently learning Flute, and also want to learn the saxophone down the track.
Selmer S3 or S2 = less regulation problems = less service expenses (because of brass and build strength) compared to the light in build and strength of brass in the YAS62.
How do you know so much about saxophones and history?
I mean, when you get picked last in gym class often enough, you find other interests. For me, that was the saxophone.
I guess I must have gotten a real deal with my Reference 54, 13 years ago. I paid just under $3,000 at the time. No kidding.

@@drwallysax At the time, due to the fluctuation between the yen and the euro, the owners told me that the price was going to jump, so I made him a deal and put a little more than half as a down payment if I can hold the horn at that price, provided that I can pay off the horn within a month. He agreed. After my next salary, about two weeks later, I rushed to the store to pay it off. He was surprised to see me with the money. I went on to get a protek case for my horn, since I wanted a case that was sturdy with pockets for my sheet music. He lowered the price on that, too. The only drawback with that experience was that my girlfriend and I were serious and plan to possibly marry. It was my goal in life though to get a Selmer horn because I really loved the look and the rich sound of the horn. My girlfriend was upset at me, but told me not to do that again without telling her. I haven’t done that since, but I still have that horn. Fast forward about 10 years, my oldest daughter is studying the sax, too. She’s playing a current YAS-28 and loves it. She also loves my horn, too.
Selmer S3&S2 will hold there value more than the Y62
The first and last thing that should not be compared with the legendary Selmer is Yamaha! And any model!

If someone is making an informed buy decision then the 62 IS a very good deal. First sax (wanting to skip over a "student" model) and have the funds. 2nd horn?
Also, buying a 62 alto or tenor gives some one the ability to try out more mouthpieces. reeds. Some one who knows the mouthpiece/reed actually matter more than the sax itself...in the sound making process (90 percent the player).
So many get too focused on brand name/model. Maybe even buying a new horn for status. As we would a LUX SUV (e.g. Land Rover).
I don't think there are many other choices in this price range. It's the one step above where there's many more brands/models to choose from. That is where biases come into play IMHO. Are we anti-Taiwanese? When it's no longer about the price.
I've always like the sound I hear from players playing a Keilwerth MKX or SX90 though...(understanding as I said the sax is the least important part of the equation)/
I am very fortunate to own a good chocolate cookie. I mean a yas 62 silver. It is my most precious instrument, I wish I was good playing it. I am so far behind.
It's not about being good - it's about having fun my friend!!! The journey is the goal. have fun, be patient, and be kind to yourself. It's an amazing hobby that is a lifetime of learning!

Thanks. I do definitely enjoy playing it. I have a very strong feeling while playing but my practice isn't as strong as my feeling.
