I'd say about 90% of these were legal.
Offense can't block anyone from behind. Defense can't hit someone Before ball arrives, can't hit anyone in the head, and can't use top of your head to tackle (spear). Other than that, light em up...

Except that unlike baseball and basketball. Football players never actually receive as much as the contract states. There are so many outs for team owners in an NFL contract. The player can be cut and the contract is nullified.. The only sure money is upfront money. The smart guy would play baseball. They have the best money and longest careers. The average length of an NFL career is 3.5 years.

I love people who have never seen football react to vidoes. “Is this legal?!” Oh yes it is. And college football hits harder than NFL because they have nothing to lose and are just throwing themselves at each other (I played college ball and my injuries still hurt 12 years later).

Great reaction! Thanks for sharing! Being a Tongan born and raised here in the States most of us Polynesian boys grow up playing both sports. As brutal as rugby was, I'd say football takes the cake for brutality and it's actually because of the pads. They give almost a God complex that drive you to do things normal humans wouldn't dare. That and the hitting had a lot less regulations on it when I was still playing ball. Plus in football, you don't have to be carrying the ball to get hit so guys were getting absolutely destroyed on every play. My cousins who come from the islands and play football end up thriving and going to the NFL but they always say football hits are harder because of less rules and more padding. Rugby although it's still very brutal, is more of a gentleman's game. A contact sport. Football is more of a sinister game. A collision sport.
    God bless!

It is exciting to see some get juked, rocked, Moss'd etc. It's apart of the game, to remove tackling and the intensity wouldn't male for a good product and wouldn't be entertaining to watch!

Some of the hits would be illegal under today's rules. You can't lead with the helmet and you can't clothesline or grab the facemask (1:35). But you can lead with your shoulders. Getting hit in the air looks bad but can actually hurt the least. Getting hit from two directions at the same time is brutal. And no, receivers don't like it when the QB makes them stretch out to catch the ball but as a defensive middle linebacker I loved it.

Most of these hits are legal they are called shoulder tackles. You are taught at a young age the wrap up tackle and shoulder tackle. Just think about getting hit by a truck at 35 to 50 mph that's what most of those hits are rated at. Most offensive and defensive lineman hit each other play after play with the force of a 25mph car crash each play.

The game was much more violent in the 60s, 70s and 80s. In recent decades they've changed the rules, primarily to protect the quarterbacks. Fans pay big money to watch star quarterbacks. So if they're injured it's bad for business. Plus, players are suffering traumatic brain injuries ... so tackling with the crown of your helmet, or targeting the other player's helmet is a penalty, suspension and possible fine.

Always enjoy folks with soccer or rugby backgrounds watching this. The great majority of these clips are NFL. A couple are college, and it looks like about 2 high school and 1 grade school clip.
The rules are slowly being changed in the direction of better protection. They disallowed grabbing the face mask a long time ago. Then they disallowed clothesline and horsecollar tackling. More recently, they disallowed deliberate helmet-to-helmet hits or leading with the helmet in any way. And there are special protections for quarterbacks in the act of passing, defenseless pass receivers, and kickers. So, some of what you're seeing here was legal at the time but is now illegal. Quite a bit of it is still legal. But this level of crunch (two people hitting each other at full speed) doesn't happen that often. It's always a possibility, though.

Americans just shake their heads every time that a footballer/soccer player rolls on the ground after a "slide tackle. Welcome to "American Football" hits--hahaha. Even Rugby players want nothing to do with this crap--hahaha.

Yeah. i started playing when i was like 8. and played all the way through college. one of the first things we are taught is how to take a hit. also i know it says NFL, but a lot of these hits were college and high school teams.

They are carving years off their lives doing this. Concussions add up, joint injuries become crippling, and a lot of these guys are college football so they aren't even getting paid. They use these guys up and throw them away.
