- The old lady in couple #3 is the clear highlight of this episode. Neither Groucho nor his cigars impress her at all, but Groucho seems genuinely tickled by her.

Groucho knew how to make the most boring people and situations hilarious. A true comical genius.
She rendered him speechless. He actually gave her a compliment by getting rid of his cigar. I don’t think he would’ve done that for just anybody.
he had no comeback, she earned that right to put the cigar away…plus he respected her like he respected his mother and grandmother so it’s the good son in him on display
and she did it twice!

Recently lost two dogs. Both old but dedicated and loving. Watching Groucho is helping us through the sad times. Where are the Groucho's of today???
We don't have one like him in 2021, he was funny, but I think some of the things he did or said are seen well or welcome to in 2021. Sorry for your lost. I have 2 dogs, and I don't want to think how I will feel the day they finally leave me. Hope you feel better now

The fact that she objected to him opening another cigar even though he wasn't going to light it makes me think maybe the old spinster just didn't like anything that's cigar shaped.

He HAD no choice. He had to quench that cigar....and put the 2nd one back in his pocket. Those were the good ole days
1954 was a great year. I came into the world that year & grew up in the 1960s, life was much simpler then. I miss those days.
I started 2nd grade. The Weekly Reader lied to us. They said the near future would be made easier for everyone by scientific advances work less hours, get paid more because of increased productivity and have lots of leisure time for traveling and hobbies. We didn't count on predatory capitalism to completely obliterate that dream.

I miss those days, too. I came in the world in 1947 and grew up on shows like this. As they say, they don't make 'em like that anymore. Yes, I too, miss those days.

Groucho had two writers who interviewed the contestants. They wrote some one-liners for Groucho if he wanted to use them. To be sure, he ad libbed lots of jokes, but he wanted some material ready in the interest of professionalism.
Groucho on his death bed said his final words, "This is no way to live" A true talent all the great ones make it look so easy because of a fabulous Personality!
@Lilibeth Doherty. When George Fenneman visited Groucho when Groucho was in very poor health in his remaining months, Fenneman helped Groucho over to his bed and Groucho said to him, "You always were a lousy dancer Fenneman"! Lol!
There are several different versions of Groucho's last words. Another one is that a nurse came into his room in the hospital and said, "Mr. Marx, we just want to see if you have a temperature." He was so weak he could barely speak by this time, but he managed to whisper, "Don't be silly, Everyone has a temperature." According to his biographer Stefan Kanfer, that was Groucho's last joke.

This is pure entertainment. This TV show has a radio feel to it. It was well produced.
The show started on radio in 1947 and aired on both radio and television from 1950-60. The radio and television versions were on different nights, and although the same contestants appeared on both, some sight gags were eliminated from the radio show.

There were a number of TV programs that were "simulcast", back in the late 1940s until sometime in the mid-1950s.
(So, they were produced with the radio listener in mind, too.)
The Burns & Allen radio spot was actually more entertaining, to me, than its simultaneous TV broadcast.
'The Lone Ranger' was also simulcast on both radio & TV
(1949-1954).

Respect for pioneers and elders was very high back then. Groucho used his 'silence' to involve the audience, while thinking to himself how to proceed with the comedy, making sure never to accidentally give offense.

Reminds us how great Groucho was as a straight man -- that's the role he played opposite Chico and Harpo in the movies, and he fell into it elegantly here.
One of Groucho's less obvious strengths on YBYL was that he knew when to lay back and let the contestants take center stage.
I love the honesty of the little old lady .
People from the 19th and early 20th centuries have a very different aura about them than post-war generations. We are fortunate to be able to see and hear them through video. The clarity of their speech is remarkable and the lack of fillers is delightful.

How I found this completely by accident, how great it is!
I often wonder if today's programmers know that there are millions of us watching 60 year old programs rather than hold back streams of vomit when attempting to view today's television offerings? Man, Groucho has been dead since 1977 and You Bet Your Life is a sample of what was once great TV. Funny, intelligent and brilliant it was and after six decades, it's as fresh as ever. Today, when it comes to prime time fare, all one can do is wonder what spoiled bitch the "Bachelor" will be hosing for a month or two after the competing HOs have been shuttled back to Neverland.
I must disagree. Many people think this is a golden age of television. There are MANY good shows, but unfortunately most of the best are on cable (like HBO or Showtime) or subscription TV (like Netflix or Hulu). Yes, there is dreck, but there was dreck in the 50's, too (remember Space Cadet?) Groucho was a special guy and that's why I'm watching this; there was never anyone like him before or since. But that doesn't mean other people have no value. I watch lots of TV and have never seen The Bachelor (or The Bachelorette, for that matter). There's enough good stuff that I can safely ignore the crap.

@@Mr.Obongo it actually didn't age poorly at all. Just because we don't use dial telephones anymore doesn't mean it's a metaphor that is somehow inscrutable. Even most young people would instantly recognize what it is try to communicate. If it aged poorly, no one would understand what it means.
To a British viewer it's incredible to see Groucho in the course of a programme, plugging a commercial organisation.
Yes, I can see how it would appear odd to someone from the UK. That's just how TV worked here in that era. The commercials and mentions of the sponsor were sometimes integrated into the programs, and even when they weren't, the stars of the shows often appeared in commercial segments.

Look at 1920s videos (creepily, including Hitler Youth). These are the kinds of exercises they used to recommend in schools, especially for young ladies.

I did live back then. We would always watch this show.
Back in 1986 I bought a 1954 Chrysler Imperial for $600. It had factory air that was so cold that actual frost would accumulate on the blower. It had a 331 cubic inch hemi engine. At that time it was the most powerful production engine on earth. I drove it while I served in the USAF and through college and it never let me down. Those were great cars.
$3230 was a lot of scratch in those days.

When I was growing up, this show was already very old. I was too young to know the answers to the questions asked by Groucho, but recognized his genius (and kindness). His shows had already aired before I was born. It always gave me a curious feeling of deja vu that kind of scared me but mostly made me realize that the world has been around for a long time, that we are part of something bigger than ourself.

Love these old shows! Groucho was always a favorite of my grandfather and watching him in action always brings a smile to my face.

A different day and age. Mary Sackett looks far older than 78. Life was hard on bodies back then.
And she lived another 15 years! 1875-1969....

Mary Sacket was born on 8 July 1875 in Connecticut and died on 31 Jan 1969 in Rosemead, California. And you're right about life being harder on bodies back then. Whew.
Born in '64 and regret having missed these days! The people of those days had no idea of the "good old days" they had!
The second contestant, Shirley J. Lestelle (1928 - 1999), is my all time favorite. She moved near me -- to Grass Valley, CA -- I would have gone to see her if I knew. Groucho was at his best in this show.
