Back in 1986 I bought a 1954 Chrysler Imperial for $600. It had factory air that was so cold that actual frost would accumulate on the blower. It had a 331 cubic inch hemi engine. At that time it was the most powerful production engine on earth. I drove it while I served in the USAF and through college and it never let me down. Those were great cars.
The whole family used to sit down and watch this every time he came on some fond memories. It's hard to believe I'm living in the same world these days
My grandparents and my mom and aunts and uncles were born in Idaho. And then when my mom was a little girl they moved to California where I was born and raised
he had no comeback, she earned that right to put the cigar away…plus he respected her like he respected his mother and grandmother so it’s the good son in him on display and she did it twice!
I started 2nd grade. The Weekly Reader lied to us. They said the near future would be made easier for everyone by scientific advances work less hours, get paid more because of increased productivity and have lots of leisure time for traveling and hobbies. We didn't count on predatory capitalism to completely obliterate that dream.
I miss those days, too. I came in the world in 1947 and grew up on shows like this. As they say, they don't make 'em like that anymore. Yes, I too, miss those days.
Groucho had two writers who interviewed the contestants. They wrote some one-liners for Groucho if he wanted to use them. To be sure, he ad libbed lots of jokes, but he wanted some material ready in the interest of professionalism.
We don't have one like him in 2021, he was funny, but I think some of the things he did or said are seen well or welcome to in 2021. Sorry for your lost. I have 2 dogs, and I don't want to think how I will feel the day they finally leave me. Hope you feel better now

The show started on radio in 1947 and aired on both radio and television from 1950-60. The radio and television versions were on different nights, and although the same contestants appeared on both, some sight gags were eliminated from the radio show.

He was so weak he could barely speak by this time, but he managed to whisper, "Don't be silly, Everyone has a temperature." According to his biographer Stefan Kanfer, that was Groucho's last joke.

People from the 19th and early 20th centuries have a very different aura about them than post-war generations. We are fortunate to be able to see and hear them through video. The clarity of their speech is remarkable and the lack of fillers is delightful.

I often wonder if today's programmers know that there are millions of us watching 60 year old programs rather than hold back streams of vomit when attempting to view today's television offerings? Man, Groucho has been dead since 1977 and You Bet Your Life is a sample of what was once great TV. Funny, intelligent and brilliant it was and after six decades, it's as fresh as ever. Today, when it comes to prime time fare, all one can do is wonder what spoiled bitch the "Bachelor" will be hosing for a month or two after the competing HOs have been shuttled back to Neverland.
I must disagree. Many people think this is a golden age of television. There are MANY good shows, but unfortunately most of the best are on cable (like HBO or Showtime) or subscription TV (like Netflix or Hulu). Yes, there is dreck, but there was dreck in the 50's, too (remember Space Cadet?) Groucho was a special guy and that's why I'm watching this; there was never anyone like him before or since. But that doesn't mean other people have no value. I watch lots of TV and have never seen The Bachelor (or The Bachelorette, for that matter). There's enough good stuff that I can safely ignore the crap.

Reminds us how great Groucho was as a straight man -- that's the role he played opposite Chico and Harpo in the movies, and he fell into it elegantly here.
When I was growing up, this show was already very old. I was too young to know the answers to the questions asked by Groucho, but recognized his genius (and kindness). His shows had already aired before I was born. It always gave me a curious feeling of deja vu that kind of scared me but mostly made me realize that the world has been around for a long time, that we are part of something bigger than ourself.
Ah yes, the good old days, when you could guzzle leaded gas and pollute to your heart's content with no government interference. How wonderful it was to live 5 years less, have a 70% illiteracy rate, and you could be openly racist and bigoted. If only life were so good today.
Well, if it's comfy as a huge bed, I guess it has to be built like a tank for when the driver falls asleep. Best of the best built in the USA. Not the best of the best overall, which is why most US brands are long gone - DeSoto died while You Bet Your Life was still on the air - and overseas brands dominate the US car market. Chrysler Corp, which owned DeSoto, is now part of an Italian-Dutch company. Those "best of the best" crapmobiles and shitboxes needed frequent maintenance and lots of it, and people didn't keep them very long before they got junked. RIP: DeSoto, Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Studebaker, Packard, Nash, Hudson, Rambler, Kaiser.... all in production when this episode first aired.

The fact that she objected to him opening another cigar even though he wasn't going to light it makes me think maybe the old spinster just didn't like anything that's cigar shaped.

You DO NOT want to miss this! This little old lady owns Grouch like a BOSS! But I gotta tell you, he showed RESPECT for women which we completely do not see today. Absolutely enjoyable to watch :)

Yes, I just started listening to old radio shows like "Gunsmoke" and "Dragnet", and the announcer during the commercial breaks was George Fenneman for "Lucky Strike" and "Chesterfield" cigarettes!

@@lottasunshine1325 i have been wondering if i might be the only person on this planet who has noticed the worldwide phenomena going on all around us - it seems so obvious to me - anyone who is older (as I am) would have to be blind or not trust their powers of observation if they do not notice - what i am trying to say is that yes it is true when i was a child that people truly LOOKED OLDER at middle age and in their senior years - and then things shifted - now more middle age and senior people truly look YOUNGER than their grandparents and great grandparents did at the same ages so many decades ago - phrases like '60 is the new 40' came into fashion around 20 years or so ago - you see what i am getting at ? - i am talking about a real energetic shift that has been happening in this world - i call it the transition from old earth to heaven on earth - a literal return to Eden - a return (I am sorry to say) that certain dark forces in this world are trying their best to screw up for humanity

Reminds us how great Groucho was as a straight man -- that's the role he played opposite Chico and Harpo in the movies, and he fell into it elegantly here.
One of Groucho's less obvious strengths on YBYL was that he knew when to lay back and let the contestants take center stage.

When I was growing up, this show was already very old. I was too young to know the answers to the questions asked by Groucho, but recognized his genius (and kindness). His shows had already aired before I was born. It always gave me a curious feeling of deja vu that kind of scared me but mostly made me realize that the world has been around for a long time, that we are part of something bigger than ourself.

I remember my dad bought a De Soto Adventurer in 1956.. That car was a dream to ride in... Push button Drive and Electric eye lights dimmer..

I had a car with a push button drive. It was a '64 Dodge Dart. I loved that car.
I was 4 years old when this came on and was not allowed to stay up and watch these programs - my sister and I were in bed by 7:00 pm.
Those were real cars, built like tanks and comfy as a huge bed.Those cars were the best of the best built in the USA by its own citizens.
Ah yes, the good old days, when you could guzzle leaded gas and pollute to your heart's content with no government interference. How wonderful it was to live 5 years less, have a 70% illiteracy rate, and you could be openly racist and bigoted. If only life were so good today.

Well, if it's comfy as a huge bed, I guess it has to be built like a tank for when the driver falls asleep. Best of the best built in the USA. Not the best of the best overall, which is why most US brands are long gone - DeSoto died while You Bet Your Life was still on the air - and overseas brands dominate the US car market. Chrysler Corp, which owned DeSoto, is now part of an Italian-Dutch company. Those "best of the best" crapmobiles and shitboxes needed frequent maintenance and lots of it, and people didn't keep them very long before they got junked. RIP: DeSoto, Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Studebaker, Packard, Nash, Hudson, Rambler, Kaiser.... all in production when this episode first aired.
