Great comparison between three starter vises that will last. I would add that beginners try a vise at a shop or show. Like all tools that fit in your hand, one will fit better than the others. If the tool feels good in your hand, you will use it more.
I live in Missouri in the Ozarks and I tie 1/32 and 116 ounce jigs for crappie most of the time really appreciate your video I’m looking for a better vis.
Hands down, Regal. Tied all my life. Over time, I've acquired all heads available, including the tube head. Start with a big game head - you'll get used to tying smaller flies on this head until you can acquire the dry fly head.
Any vise recommendations in the $50 to $100 range. Being a beginner I’m not ready to invest $200 yet if it’s not something I stick with. I hope I do, however I’d like to ease in tying. I was thinking simple egg pattern flys for trout and I want to tie foam spiders for panfish. Thanks. Great video.
I started on a Peak, but wasn't crazy about the bluntness of the jaws. Personal preference. Everything else about the Peak is quite good. I switched to a Griffin Mongoose with much pointier jaws, using the much heavier Peak base. I submit that the Mongoose is a worthy contender for a starter vise. Just for fun, I tied some size 32 flies on the Mongoose. It's do-able but I have no idea what a size 32 fly is for. 🙂My everyday flies are panfish and bass flies. Say size 10 to size 2. Just a comment. Nice video!
I find i grab different vises for different flies. Overall, I like the Regal....fast, simple,strong. But for flies with palmering or wrapped dubbing I use my Atlas or Peak rotary's
Allie, Dyna King has not fallen out of favor. I selected these vises because they seem to get mentioned most as long term vises for $200 or less in inline discussions.
Sorry. But do 90% of my tying on a Regal Medallion. It does most of what I need. My other vise which was my first is an Atlas Anvil rotary. Regal does what I need.
The Thompson A is and was probably the best vise without all the bs. There are knock offs that are just as good for $20._ $30 bucks. Simple, strong, no wobble. Don't waste bucks for stuff you won't use.
$200 Bucks for a Beginners Vice ? ... When a $22 dollar vice would be just fine .... Sounds like a Sales Pitch to Empty your new Customers' Wallets ! ... That's not being very Customer Friendly ... :-/
Sorry, but you do not know how to use the Peak properly. The jaws are fine for size 24 and up dry and jig hooks. The rotary adjustment does give the right amount of tension if tightened properly.

😅 if the trout are insisting on a size 20 or smaller, I pack it in & head for the bar. Can't see those tiny things on the water!

The peak is not restrictive, this guy simply doesn't know how to use a vise properly. I tie 6/0 TP610 in my peak. 😆
