    Hi from Rolla MO 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes.
    I'm using the match catch and it works just fine. I'm tying midges and panfish fly's. The guys at the fly shop all like it. Lite weight and very stable. A good travel vise.

    Good review, I just upgraded about a month ago to the griffin. I've found that there is a point you can adjust the rotation tension that allows you to use the rotary function and still be able to keep it stable for fixed position tying, granted it took a lot of trial and error to find that adjustment point. Overall I'm quite happy with it.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you're right Brad... it just takes some tweaking to find the right amount of tension. But I can see it being a great vise you'll get a lot of good use out of. Thanks for the note my friend!

      I appreciate it Kenneth! If you're just starting, you can't go wrong with the Supreme. For just over $20, the thing will last a pretty long time, definitely until you're ready to upgrade. And honestly, some people never need to upgrade. There are some good tiers out there who tied on one for decades. :-)

    For a few bucks more I bought the cam version of the Griffen you reviewed. The Griffin Odyssey Spider Cam Vise, is my first and only vise so far. I’ve been tying on it for five years and it has tied tons of flies from 22’s down to 1’s. Fresh to salt. It’s a fantastic beginner vise. You were spot on in how you adjusted the tension to have rotary function yet still enough of a hold to tie normal. It’s how mine is setup and I haven’t adjusted it again for five years. Excellent review and awesome channel.
    Don’t enter me into the #vise drawing. I’ve already got a cheap vice. Allow someone in need the chance.

    thank you for this...I decades ago lost track of the tying kit with vice & base I had as a teenager. I'm going to start tying my own bucktails but don't want to invest in a "better" vice just yet. I won't be tying flies at all, ok at least that's my plan at this microsecond. ;)
    I will be using 3/0 to 8/0 jig headed hooks or, easier, jig blanks in the 1/8 to 3oz range, maybe even 4oz. If I add a base for $18 (current cost on Amazon) that makes a $50ish range vice so I might up my budget a small bit and look into that range though from looking at Crown at ~$24 and just use the screw down base clamp on a wood TV tray.
    Thanks again for investing your time to help us newbie's (OK 60-mumble can still be kinda newbie...maybe...kindasorta?)

    My excellent Peak Vise has a Plastic Tension-Screw (under the brass part holding the ball bearings) and thank God it's plastic!! Because if this Tension adjustment screw had been steel, I'd end up with metal cutter, albeit a slow one! Have you ever used a Tube-Cutter?! If you haven't please look at the design of a Tube cutter!! A Steel Tension Screw would go through all "commonly" used steel alloys, with the exception of Carbide steel (for example carbide drill bits for Concrete, Marble etc)!😊You're probably more experienced than I am, I was tying seriously for myself in 1978 (for Sea-Run Cutthroat trout, Steelhead, Bull trout and all 5 species of Pacific Salmon). In 1981, I was selling Steelhead flies to fly shops at $6.00 a dozen. Yes I was indeed desperate for money to pay for my college!! And didn't have any skills other than , tutoring college math at school. So in addition to that, I tied flies, and made custom rods. And I don't mean just fly rods as they're very easy to make. I'm talking about elaborate Saltwater rods with Roller guides, decorative thread-wraps (anything from half & half Diamond wraps, Chevron wraps to the U.S. flag + eagles etc. and of course all done by many woven strands of thin thread)!😩My final point is that I could've continued to tie for ever with my basic Universal Vise Company's basic vise!! It all boils down to the fact that most of us, including myself, want better and fancier toys as time goes on!! My Vise through all those years was a $25.00 Universal Vise Co. vise!! Oh it was a Pain to rotate it!! But it didn't impede my ability to tie professional flies! 😃11

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great comment! I've heard from lots of folks who have tied on the old Universal Vise forever! And I know what you're talking about with a steel cutter. But the upgrade Peak offers for their tension screws are brass- which is a significantly softer metal than steel. And if you think about it, what you're talking about is probably why they make them out of brass!

    Good Evening Sir Matt I loved this video, it takes me back to when I first started tying and wished their was a video to help me than. I love the one with the green and probably save up and get one. I use a spider cam with the clamp first then I purchased a pedestal for it and gotten used to it. Surplus part about that is its lifetime warranty on all parts that's probably why it's a little expensive with that good luck to all the new people I hope you win the vice cuz this is really really fun tying flies and thank you Matt for being a great teacher

      Edward, thank YOU my friend! Hopefully having a video out there like this will help some of the new folks who are just getting started. Matt thanks to your videos I am going to give fly tying a try. I came across a fly tying vise on eBay called the Mayfly 2A. It is a full true rotary pedestal mounted made in the USA vise for $85. I decided to purchase one figured it had to as good or better than the Chinese imports. Although I don’t have anything to compare it to I am impressed. I would be interested in your thoughts if you got the opportunity to get one and review it for your channel. • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jhorkey That's a great question Joe, and one that might be worth making a video of. You've given me something to think about! But in short, I would think the two most important tools not to skimp on are scissors and bobbin holder. I probably buy two good pairs of scissors a year, and by good, I'm talking $20-25 Dr. Slick. Keep in mind that someone who ties a couple times a week might be able to make a good pair of scissors last a couple years. But if you're like me and tie pretty much every day, and don't take good care of scissors (I cut anything with them), then they don't last as long as they could. :-)
      Next thing I wouldn't want to tie without is a good ceramic tube bobbin holder. You can't go wrong with the Rite bobbins. I've got three or four and they have lasted me several years. There's nothing more frustrating than shredding or breaking your thread because of a microscopic nick in a steel tube bobbin.
      As far as a vise goes, I really LIKE tying with a nice Regal, but honestly it doesn't make my flies any better. It just makes it more fun to tie. So investing in a high-end vise isn't as important as the basic tools. Just my two cents.
      Thanks again for the idea, and welcome to the channel! I'm glad you're here. -Matt

    Yes my first vise was a cabelas version of the supreme. It did its job but never held the hooks well, mostly 12 and larger. I eventually went to a griffin mongoose flagship partly because I like gadgets and machined devices. It has hook holding power, however I was surprised to see how much plastic and aluminum had been used in places that would definitely benefit from a better quality material. I understand some of the corners that they cut. But for a rotary vise to have tight and loose areas in its rotation I don’t think they took adequate time for quality control. It is a bit light of a base... I think that most things in the fly fishing world are are a bit expensive for the beginner anglers. Did I mention it holds a hook well.
    Yes, the supreme vise is a decent one for starting on. I added a bronze washer from hardware store to put under the cam lever for smoother use. But I don’t think they are all created equal.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you hit the nail on the head in that the old vises like the Double A or the Supreme are not all made the same. I'll bet over the years they were made in different factories by different manufacturers. I know the Supreme I bought in the 1980s is just a little different from the one I got last week. Overall, very similar, just small little differences here and there. Also, you mention one thing that I don't like so much about a lot of the Griffins... there seems to be more plastic than I would prefer. I mean, the Mongoose is usually a $200+ vise and at that price point you'd think they could have used some decent aluminum or brass in more areas.
      Thanks for the note!

    Great review. I tie on a griffin spider cam vise. I like it. I also just purchased a peak vise. I also like it very much. It would be great to give away these vices to young folks who are just getting started. Thanks #vise

    I've been tying on the crown since November, upgraded from the Supreme after only a month.
    Love the crown!
    The Supreme, wouldn't hold flies well, and would loosen even more when I tried to spin it.

      That's a bummer on your Supreme. I wonder if they were made differently 30 years ago or if I just got lucky and got a good one. Glad you like the Crown. Good luck my friend!

      @@SavageFlies yeah, I was a bit dissapointed with the supreme.
      But the crown made up for it!
      They're also a bit more expensive where I live, compared to your prices.
      Mainly because I'm Canadian. Lol

      I've got a Herter's vise as well David! Someone donated it to me earlier this year. The thing is a true classic. :-)

    I tied about 4 flies on the "crown" vise. And sent it back. The jaws do not hold hooks tightly.

      Thanks for the feedback. I've had two to test and they both held hooks very well. Now I haven't tied on them extensively but I did play around with several different sizes of hooks and it worked fine for me.
