- Southern Rock can be linked back to March 26th, 1969 when Duane Allman, the founder and leader of the Allman Brothers Band, summoned his brother Gregg to join a band he patched together that was fusing blues, jazz, and country music -- a combination literally unheard of at the time.
This is the story of Duane Allman’s rise from forming the Allman Brothers Band in 1969 to his untimely death two and a half years later, which marked one of rock and roll’s greatest losses.

Hendrix. No one else rewrote both the playing and performing book as thoroughly and dramatically. He could perform better than anybody ever. No one had his moves or magnetism. The man was a God.

He is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He paved the way for many others, especially on slide! Still listen to their recordings daily.
For the millionth time, there is no such thing as the greatest of all time, only your most favorite of all time. Duane is definitely one of my favorites. Happily, I have a long list of favorites spanning different musical styles. What makes music great is so many flavors to choose from. RIP Duane, wish you was still here..
Agreed wholeheartedly. No one is the greatest.... but there are many greats. Music is based on perspective, taste and relatability. What I like others may not.... but that doesn't make the musician better or worse.... it is what it is.

Very true. IMHO, Dickie Betts was the better guitar player, his leads gave me goosebumps. Crisp, clear, every bend precise and with feel. So yeah, there is no greatest, its what moves you.

@Mike The Bike Clapton imitates most blues greats. Stevie Ray as well. Plus Clapton Richards both wete so jealous of Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. I lost respect for Clapton. Hisslow hand was a disaster. Page Duane Allman Hendrix Zappa ( also sent from the Gods along with Page ) are all unique and your never dissapointed in their delivery their style powerhouses all. Actually an addict uses far more heroin snorting it than banging it, sometimes twice as much depending on your tolerance. No one on the planet could do $16,000 a week worth of heroin. by themselves and live to tell about it. Clapton himself said he only snorted it that is why he wore a chain around his neck with a small spoon.
Almost every song on the entire assorted love songs album was about Pattie Boyd. Tom dowd would never have tolerated shooting heroin it would have got no work done. That is why the album was released incognito. Clapton was infatuated/madly in love with Pattie Boyd for a decade before he married her. Clapton Derek dominos did a two month your of the UK.
DUANE performed twice live in the states after recording the album. Clapton stayed a junkie for another 3 years. George Harrison gave Clapton his Blessing after he saw his and Pattie Boyds marriage is at an end.

When I saw the Allman Brothers Band in June,1970, they were the "smoothest" group I had ever seen. Every song was immaculate in every way.

What always amazed me was just how good Duane became in such a very short period of time.
Duane’s work is as fresh today as 50 years ago.....all recordings are classics that I still enjoy often!
Allman Brothers thrived after Duane's death, a testament of great the band was. Let's not foget Dickey Betts his incredible contributions

I think Duane Allman is the most underrated guitarist ever, and if he had lived, he would be known as the greatest guitarist ever. His tone, his finesse, his unmeasurable talent that should hold him in the number 2 spot. I think it’s criminal that Duane and Dickey are so underrated.. maybe one day they’ll have the recognition they deserve. Long live the original six!

I remember my older brother playing the Allman Brother music, I was in the 6th grade and had no choice but to listen to rock music because we shared bedroom, I remember him tell me how great this band is and how great Duane was. That’s how I fell in love with band and how I got into playing guitar and other instrument. And to this day I play there music all the time. I’m 62 and can’t get enough.❤️🎼🎸and yes he was already the greatest slide guitarist. And couldn’t imagine how much greater he would of been. We miss him.

You got that right. It was Duane that grabbed me at 15 years old and has held me until my 65th birthday next month. Now that's some crazy glue! I love him still the same now as i did then. And I also have much respect and love for my friend and Duane's "baybruh" Gregg. Nothing has changed, except they're playing together once again, God bless them.

Duane changed music forever not just because of his music, but his ability to bring people together. He made everyone around him sound better. Take Layla for example his ears along with Eric Clapton and then with Tom Dowd mixing it together they took two guitar parts and made it sound like 3 by using the harmonics coming off the top of the guitars. That's genius level stuff that's still used today.

becasue those sessions are not even close duanes best. Everyone likes Clapton so many people think that Duanes session with him must be hist best ever... Fillmore East is way better from him

It is not an in depth study into just what was in fact so great about his playing, but neither should we have expected it, right? It is a well done introduction to the subject of Duane Allman and the band.
Bland and commercial like Iron Butterfly and the Byrds. Yeah, too bad theByrds never developed. They had their first number 1 song in 1965 with Dylan’s Tamborine Man never mind That Dave Crosby never did anything. Dicky Betts is and was a great guitarist and the two guitarist together made the a lot of the sound of their music. Then your question about other great guitarists; how about the little known players like Frank Zappa or John Lennon and another unknown guitarist, Eric Clapton who played on Duane’s Derick and the Dominoes. Yes, some of you story was good but man you left out or got some pretty serious mistakes like the bland commercial bands like the IronButterfly who’s In-a-Godda-da-vida came out as the commercial 17 minute long song that could only be played on FM radio. Not commercial at all! And I love the Allman Brothers, especially “Live at the Fillmore.”
Exactly. Derek & the Dominoes was the key to Duane's and the band's breakthrough. And the song's not "The Keys to the Highway;" it's "Key to the Highway."
Solo on Elizabeth Reed is perhaps the best live electiric guitar solo in rock and roll history. Can't even imagine where he would have taken us had he lived

I agree, although it seems like it never get mentioned in all the "greatest guitar solo" lists that get compiled. Those compilers are all numb, comfortably.
I got to see the band in '71 on their final tour with Duane. Still one of my top 10 shows! I love the new Fillmore East box set. It still gives me goosebumps. The Duane/Dickey dual attack is unequaled in rock. Lots of other great guitarists out there, of course - Clapton, Beck, Winter, Hendrix (my favorite), but the two guitarist together are amazing: to ply that well in sync while improvising and continually pushing each other to greater heights. Wow! You can't play air guitar this fast and here they are, conciously hitting every note. I saw them again in '72 with only Betts in the band and he played so well, there were times you couldn't tell Duane wasn't onstage.

I worked for guys at Capricorn Studio. Yeah things without Duane were not the same for awhile. But because it was Duane's dream the guys held steadfast in honor of and love for their brother Duane. They went through some trying times. Gregg never made a bid to "lead" the band. His grief was so deep, i think he struggled sometimes just to get through another day. Grieving for years, just seeking some sort comfort, he developed a few bad habits, did alot of soul searching. Somewhere in the 90's he kicked the habits and came to some sort terms about the death of his brother. His light kept shining brighter and a newly sober Gregg was truly back, just as he was in the beginning. He had his share of health problems, but by the time they retired, imho, Gregg along with the most excellent guitarists, Derek Trucks (nephew of Butch, one of the drummers) and Warren Haynes brought the ABB back full circle to the band they were, when Duane passed. As close as they could ever get. Greggs love for his brother took them there. The hairs stood up on my arms and back of head and neck when i heard them play and i knew Duane was most certainly proud of his baybruh. I felt his presence there. Now they are together again. Who knows maybe someday we will hear them again playing together because that road indeed, does go on forever. And for now, their lovely children carry on their legacy. Extended family of music, indeed! Thats what it's all about. God's great blessings to them.
The Allman Brothers Band died when Duane Allman died. The "band" sucked after that.

Just from watching these old clips and footage, which was a good deal before my time, Duane Allman just oozed what in my opinion is 'cool'. Such a sad shame to see those young men and women that had so much talent and vision sadly pass away before their time.
It's heartbreaking, even almost 50 yrs later.
I'm still in awe after listening to their Fillmore cuts 52 years later. Still sends me places musically only a few can match. I think some of these pieces will be remembered through time like Beethoven or Mozart!!

According to Swamper Jimmy Johnson (RIP), Southern Rock was born at the Wilson Pickett "Hey Jude" session when Duane started playing the guitar parts.
Duane Allman was a master of the slide guitar. His work with the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, and The Muscle Shoals sessions was proof that humans can do magic. He was gone much too soon.

Great job man! La boy who cut my guitar teeth listening to the Allman Brothers Band. Saw live show during Brothers of the Road tour in Shreveport, at Hirsch Memorial Colosseum. Best Southern Rock band ever, and I do love Skynard. Duane, still is a teacher for all who are wise enough to listen and study his style. Thanks again man! I never knew some of this stuff.
I attended an Allman Brothers Band show on Market St. in San Francisco, CA back in the 1990s. They put adrenaline, whiskey, & multiple scents of flowers into the audio atmosphere! My Lawrenceville School, NJ alum chums can testify that this talented group often filled our time on campus with fun & excitement -- 5 miles from Princeton! Excellent! * Cav ~ L'76! *

As an all round musician Belinda, he is easily one of the greatest of the greats. Everything he touched was golden. He could do it all. His guitar playing and his tone were utterly distinctive. His slide playing was as good as it gets and he played saxophone, mandolin, blues harp, wrote incredible songs, had the voice of an angel and was an electrifying performer. A true master musician.

Honestly, despite the fact he went to the STATES over 25 times, people STILL ask me about RORY. And are thankful l did. I can only go by what people say or ask me. Fascinating history about Duane Allman!
I saw the Allman Brothers for the first at the Fillmore West in 1971 the gig opened with The Charlie Daniels Band next were The Marshall Tucker band and then the Allman Brothers Band. I was hooked on ABB after that experience. I saw them about 8 times thereafter there hasn't been a band that clicked in such a unique way since. When Greg passed away it was like loosing a brother to me I was so sad. I named my daughter Melissa after the ABB. Im now 74 but still get goosebumps when I hear the long version of Whipping Post.

Steve Wyatt, that’s awesome. My Father was not conservative, but he loved what he called “hillbilly music.” When he and my mom separated, Dad got Sundays. I’ll never forget this: he wanted to be able to talk with his little girl, so he bought a “Creem” magazine and read it cover to cover. There was a crossword puzzle, and the clue was “crows on the lawn.” I was nine years old and I was stumped. Daddy knew the answer, “Yardbirds.” I was so pleased that he was so hip! Many years later, I found country music on my own; we all did, after watching “Urban Cowboy.” My father and I drove from L A to Philly and back when I was 40, and we had the grandest time listening to his cassettes. I hipped him to Emmylou, and he hipped me to Carl Perkins and Chet Atkins. My favorite, though, is the great Hank Williams. Thank you, Daddy, and I know that you and Jesus are listening to Hank, and God is telling you to turn it down! Did your Father continue to listen with you? I loved your story. When I listen to the Allman Brothers live album Live at the Fillmore East there is no doubt that Duane’ slide guitar playing is other worldly. However this is not the only fantastic thing going on. Barry Oakley’s bass is in the same stratosphere. The same can be said for the dual drummers. I am reminded of the statement that fight trainer/manager Angelo said about Ali’ last fight with Zola Foley before being exiled from boxing for a time because of not submitting to the draft and I quote “ if he (Ali) could have gone on from there.” The same could be said of the Allman’s band if had they not lost Duane and a year later Barry Oakley.

Although I'm grateful for all that Duane and gave us, I can't help but feel cheated when I wonder what might have been....

In 1971 the world lost a rock and roll legend and fine poet in Jim Morrison and one of the best guitarist of all time in Duane Allman.

I remember them well as I lived next door to them at Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, TN in 1964. They could really play and were nice guys.

With no disrespect to your personal experience, the original blues guitar legends like Duane's first inspiration, (to pick up the instrument, B.B. King), initiated the emotional technique many decades earlier. Regardless, Duane is a special artist, being the heart & soul of the Allman's, with a commanding, singular style all his own.

When I was a student at FSU I spent a week in Macon working at the GAB. I toured the big house and on the way up the stairs I felt like i just had to go into this one specific room. It was Duane's room. It had pictures of him with his child and all other of his possessions. I felt weird but comfortable. I asked the lady who worked there if the place was haunted and she said yes and that Duane haunts the place.

Hettie, after a MR. Singer got me into Ford Plant, Brookpark, Ohio I passed the time on water and oil pressure checking machines mimicking Duane solos from their Fillmore East live album. The south was new to me, and Allman brothers
explain life so well. Then I quit Ford and was hired at Pinkerton for about $2.10 per hour. Brought my acoustic to work, practiced Little Martha and Melissa, then fell asleep in woman’s lounge ‘ cause there was a couch. got fired next day for falling asleep after doing the rounds. Music keeps me alive, especially strong

noise interfere. Idlewild South, Loan me a Dime by Boz Scaggs, Duane Anthology , and that wonderful album picture showing Florida Cypress lake with Allmans paddling a canoe. Feel like I was tied to whipping post building boat in Cedar Key, but we all have to grow up. Just learning to sew via machine at age 68. Even cleaning my piano to learn a mimick of Chiffons and Cookies tunes.
Sucks that these documentaries can't afford the royalties to play some actual Allman Brothers music in the video.
Plus: Duane was great, but we shouldn't ignore the contributions of Dickey Betts to mesh with Duane's style. They were the perfect tandem.
Completely agree the two of them together was the sound betts was/is a melodic genius and duane channelled ancient spirits with his passionate and extremely soulful playing a combination which can't be beat imo

Dickey Betts came up with all those dual melodic scalar runs in harmony that became a trademark of the Allman's two guitar sound.

Duane was the greatest slide guitarist of our time. His creativity and " no holds barred" approach created some of the greatest solos ever captured on vinyl. The Fillmore east album is perhaps the greatest live recording of all time. What Duane gave us in 1971 on that album has inspired guitar players for nearly 50 years. Thank you Duane - your phrasing is still unsurpassed.

I am Very Fortune enough to have gone to a bar called Sargent Peppers In Jacksonville, FL in 71 my home town and had Duane and a couple of others band members come in and played for about an hour, Wow, what a treat, then it seemed very short time after I heard about the tartaric accident, My memory not that clear any more, except of reading in the Jacksonville times-union of Duane being killed and thinking, I just seen him, and now he’s gone!?WOW! There are countless technically superb guitarists in the world. What impresses me the most about Skydog, and a handful of others, was the enotion and passion he was able to unleash from his guitar. We are all blessed to have had the pleasure of listening to a true artist.
Every great guitarist has a unique sound. Jimi taught the world what a guitar could do. Duane was a part of the guitar when he played. There will be copiers if the style but there won't be another Duane. Duane, Berry, Butch and Gregg, rest in peace Bros ❤️❤️❤️❤️

to imagine what the allman brothers would have gave the world musically today if duane was still alive is inconceivable. i’m jealous of the fact that my dad was at the fillmore east during their live album recording (arguably the best live album of all time) and having that original vinyl record to this day along with a poster from the final weekend show at the fillmore
I’m from Macon, I remember it like it was yesterday. The Big House is on Vineville Ave. , just north of Culver St
10 years ago it was a museum, for the band. Greg and Duane are buried next to each in Rosehill Cemetery on Riverside Drive.
I was in Macon for a teacher conference at Howard HS, beginning the Monday following the funeral over the weekend. At the time Gregg was laid in a plot across a walkway from where Duane and Berry rest. As I understand, the family purchased the land and has since completed a family plot that also includes Butch's ashes ...never found Elizabeth Reed's gravestone even though I know it's nearby.
Even if his contribution to Derek & The Dominos amounts to a one-off, not mentioning it seems to me a major deficiency of this bio piece.
According to Clapton, Duane gave him that intro to Layla.......now THAT is a good friend.

So grateful to have seen the allman brothers with my dad (and loved them because of my dads love of them) several times in the late 90s early mid 00s I think the last show I saw was in 2007 or so. One of the greatest bands ever
The live of them 10 yrs ago is unmatched. I have this on loop, when I just want to slow.
When I first moved to Georgia some guys tried to get me to listen to The Allman Brothers... But I grew up on Bootsy Collins Earth Wind & Fire and didn't think some southern rock has had anything for me. Fast forward 30 years and I pick up a Allman Brothers CD and I play it for 2 weeks straight. It taught me a couple of things one, listen to when somebody is trying to tell you about other musicians. And 2 I just could not believe that they are just like some hillbilly Earth Wind & Fire. I love that band I love them... I felt so stupid

In his short life he put out the greatest guitar music unparalleled to this day. Gary Moore was also great but only because of his singing along with his remarkable playing. Incidentally I have seen Segovia live ,jazz guitarists live ,a twelve string genius flamenco guitarist and have heard some great country slide but NEVER has anyone compared with Duane. If you ask anyone in the industry including the greats ,they would probably tell you the same thing.
For sure the greatest southern rock band in history. St.Louis Mo is a city that will forever love and miss both brothers as well as the band as a whole. They were a big influence to our own home band MAMA'S PRIDE that shared the stage with Greg numerous times throughout the years. They're all gone but never ever forgotten.
The Allman Brothers band will go down in history as one of the best Southern Rock bands ever. May they all RIP.

It's always a shame when talented people die young; Duane Allman set the bar for slide guitar.
Where would Duane have taken his music had there been no wreck? Who knows, but it would have been inspirational, that's for sure!

In November of 1969 The Allman Brothers Band released their first album. I got the album and a guitar for Xmas and learned to play taking the needle on and off the vinyl. I turned 12 the following January and played my Halloween carnival dance in middle school that year. I had no idea I was learning from the best!
I'll always wonder what the original band could've achieved. What if they'd had more time... what an impact they would've had on music. As it was, they still left us with some of the greatest, most beautiful art in modern music history. What a band.
Anybody who saw them during the Seven Turns Tour would argue that they definitely had the old magic back, Warren was channeling Duane for sure !!! Saw them at the Wilturn in LA, played for 5 hours with 45 minute versions of Elisabeth Reed and Whipping Post. This version of the band was right there with the original band, blistering live shows.
Keep fantasizing , there will never be another Duane . If you saw the Allman Brothers not Allman Brother you would not say that

Your argument is muted by Dickey Betts own words, he was quoted many times that Warren made him practice more to raise his level of play because of Haynes slide skill on the old material . You jump to the conclusion that I never saw the original lineup, so I'll return the favor, if you saw the Allman Brothers live in the late 80's - early 90's you would not say that...

as a professional guitarist playing seven nights a week for 30 years I will say that Statesboro blues Allman Brothers was probably the most flawless slide playing ever produced by mankind
Not a pro. Though hearing that slide was pure music. Then you figured out it was a slide. All other slides are obvious.

My wife and I saw them play the Hollywood Bowl in the early 70s. I count that as one of the best of many, many concerts I've fortunate enough to attend. A seminal band.

@@anniejo1355 Yes, L & M did open for them. The crowd was not having any "House at Pooh Corner" as they came to rock, but the duo finished up with a great rendition of "Vahevala" and warmed us up nicely for the Allman Bros. Back when a concert ticket was $10 or $15.....
Jeff Hansman, I went with my first boyfriend, and it was only my second concert. I think we were juniors in HS, and I don’t even think we had driver’s licenses. We are still friends, and sheepishly admit that we fell in love with L&M. He and his brother played “House at Pooh Corner” at an assembly in our HS aud on my 18th bday. They both became pro musicians, and my babe toured with “War.” His brother was hired by Madonna as the guitarist behind her in the “Isla Bonita” video. I’ve seen the Allman Bros several times since. I’ve always loved Greg’s voice, and was so sad when I heard that he died. I’m going to Philadelphia to see Ry and Roseanne Cash. I’m very excited! Thanks for answering my question, and you’re right about concerts. I feel blessed to have shared my time on Earth with all those wonderful, innovative musicians.

Pretty much everyone, literally everyone, played with the dead. That I know of: Joan Baez, Dylan, Allmans, Jefferson Airplane, Pete Townsend (not well), Crosby Stills Nash Young (sans one or two of them) Janis Joplin, Carlos Santana, Branford Marsalis, Bruce Hornsby, Jorma, etc. you literally can't list them all.

Duane Allman was such a great guitarist, and can be in many guitar players and fans Mt Rushmore of guitar players, he was that good, playing like the best guitarists with decades of experience, a very mature set of skills, that must have been a reflection of the person and spirit of the man....ahead of his time.

I grew up in NYC during the time covered in this video. The Allman Bros Band were basically the house band at the Fillmore East. They played there dozens of times. Live at the Fillmore is one of the best albums ever produced.
My youngest son is Duane, his older brothers are Derek (the Domino) and Stevie Ray.

I observed a picture of the Grateful Dead while Weird History was doing a voice over about the Allman Brothers live shows.
To have achieved so much at so young an age. To have created musical material that was way more than most people can put together in less than 3 years. To have such a lasting impact on musicians, peers and listeners ... Duane Allman might have died at 24 but he accomplished several lifetimes worth. His story is both exhilarating and deeply saddening. Probably, the ultimate What if.
