I love these Tarka videos! Just fun, down to earth travelogues without all of the reality TV vibe that seems to be so prevalent elsewhere on TH-cam these days. I'm not dissing TH-cam here. I'm just bemoaning the predictability of so much of the other content out there. It's nice to see someone bucking the trend a little bit ;-) Cheers Tarka!
Thanks James! There are plenty of sailing channels out there already, and though I understand the appeal of the reality TV style that most of them adopt, it just wasn't right for me. That said, I was always a fan of the content that channels like Delos created. It seemed to hit the right balance of story telling and reality TV. But I was also a huge fan of the pure-narrative style in Christian Williams' video about his crossing from LA to Hawaii. I'm still finding my style, but ultimately I think I want my episodes to feel more like chapters of a book, than 'days in the life of-'.
Amazing to see a Vega being sailed in such warm and beautiful waters. I sail my Vega Locheil Lady on the west coast of Scotland which has cold and grey waters. If I checked my anchor by snorkelling, it would be with a 5mm wetsuit only! Brilliant videos! All the best to Tarka and her crew!
The water there is definitely some of the clearest I've ever seen. If it wasn't for the wind creating ripples and waves, it would probably look like glass!
Don't you talk bad about my little girl , she motors , as fast as she can.. beautiful drone shots , just beautiful. And I love the way you show the course along the map shots. .. getting there it's not the adventure. , the adventure is in the passages itself ..
Really enjoying following along on your adventures, Beautiful photography and I love your style of presenting its reminds me so much of Guybrush Threepwood!
Yeah, I really wish I could have shown more, but the footage I had at that time wasn't the best quality, and I couldn't use much of it :/. Don't worry though, there are much better reefs coming in future videos! :)
No no no! More more more 😊 Keep up the great work. These are awesome. I feel like I’m sailing with you aboard Tarka. Curious what type of drone camera & cameras are you using. The quality is awesome. Hopefully you get that engine problem worked out soon. If there is something I can do state side don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m between Pensacola Fl/Mobile Al so we have great access to engine parts. 🏖⛵️⚓️💪
Good! The more people I can take on my adventure, the better. I use a DJI Phantom 3, mostly because I got a good deal on a refurbished unit. A lot of footage comes from GoPros, because they are the only camera that can reliably handle the salty environment. The non-GoPro footage is mostly from a Canon 70D, but it died about 6-months into my sailing, and I've since replaced it with an Canon M3 -- again, mostly because of its low price, and it allows me to use my old lenses.
I do have navigation lights on the bow, as well, but the problem with that is the waves are generally higher than the freeboard, so they would be rather ineffective at sea.
For the most part. I think my biggest fear is losing the rig, and the hull itself is sound, and it's very rare to me in conditions bad enough that I have to start worry about being rolled.
When this video was made, I only had the 150W solar panel, but these days, we have 350W of solar with the addition of flexible panels, and I have a 12V charger for my laptop now. Before, I used a 300W inverter to charge my laptop.
Bryan, that's great!! - the sailing as well as the "mission" ☼ Watching yours now makes me want to set sail tomorrow some 80nm to Santorini from Crete ;)) the wind looks good though. Mine is a Ventura 30 built in '73 - lovely one, simple and fast. Here's some footage of crossing the "notorius" Carpathian sea to Rhodes th-cam.com/video/3Ec7JVuUWvo/w-d-xo.html . 8 hours later the mainsail ripped in a thunderstorm, next day in a bay the birds were singing under a blue sky with no wind as if nothing had happened - sweet nature :) . All the best to you !!
Does your marine vhf transmit AIS? That and radar reflectors would probably be the best way to be noticed by commercial ships. Of course improvised rigging lights is better than none and should be done regardless. Couldn't you have closed off the seacocks then pour in vinegar to remove the calcification? Just a few hours soaking in vinegar removes most deposits, one thing you have while sailing is time. Of course it's more likely the outside ports of the seacocks are fouled so it would take a swim to check that out.
So sad to hear you saying healthy corals. I was born in the Caribbean and what you see today in every island is a sad joke of what the coral reef used to be. They are no close to a 20% of the biodiversity they used to have. All Acropora Cervicornis and Acropora Palmata gone by bleaching, white band, black band, wasting and other diseases. The erstwhile omnipresent Diadema Antillarum gone to up to a 97% turning some ecosystems into algae base systems. The Caribbean coral reef it is no more. And, whatever left has a bleak future with the increase of the sea pH due to climate change.
I believe you completely, and it's a good example of the "shifting baseline" phenomenon. My baseline for "healthy coral" is probably what was once considered unhealthy, and that's a very, very sad state of affairs. Let's hope we can shift the baseline int he other direction.

MOST EXCELLENT DRONE FOOTAGE!!! Kudos.
Trinidad representative right here safe travels 🇹🇹
Love your channel bro. You’re instilling sailing dreams in me. Hope you’re doing good man.
*also an SG1 mega nerd.
Dude, I love your narrative and editing. Awesome and down to earth. My husband and I said a Bristol 34 in Chile, southwest Pacific. Fair winds!
Wow!
That end of your drone footage made it look like Tarka was floating in the air- such a cool perspective.
Cheers 🍻
The water there is definitely some of the clearest I've ever seen. If it wasn't for the wind creating ripples and waves, it would probably look like glass!
Yes! This is the episode with subtitles ;)
Great videos. I dig the SG1 reference!
It's a guilty pleasure. I like how it hits on some interesting issues, but still doesn't take itself too seriously.
I'm getting ready for my journey I can't wait to sail the Caribbean and all those great islands good video
I'm very proud of you .. :) I only had to wait a week this time .
Just for you ;).

Picard and Jelad at Tenagra. Tarka and Tenagra on the ocean. Sokath! His eyes open!
Haha, nice twist on it. I just re-watched that episode the other day, too.
Good sailing and good friends.great job.you do get your share of squall challenges.thanks again for your vids.
Thanks Bruce! It sure seems like I am always hitting squalls when I put the sails up -- I think that's just how sailing works, though.
I REMEMBER THAT SG-1 EPISODE!!!
Great video looks like a great time. Trying to get my own adventure going. Hopefully by spring.. Enjoy be safe have fun
Really enjoying following along on your adventures, Beautiful photography and I love your style of presenting its reminds me so much of Guybrush Threepwood!
The water is so clear it looks like the boat is floating over the land!!
Outstanding content!
Excellent down to earth video!
Love stargate!
Brilliant !!!
Good vid bro.
I’d be taking my Stargate SG1 box set on my cruise too 😁
Take a digital copy ;)
HULK SMASH BUTTON!!!!!
Awesome video, would have liked to seen more of the reef but great video anyway.
Yeah, I really wish I could have shown more, but the footage I had at that time wasn't the best quality, and I couldn't use much of it :/. Don't worry though, there are much better reefs coming in future videos! :)
Beautiful, but the Pacific is gonna blow your freakin mind.
Do you think its dangerous to cross the Pacific in such a small boat?
Good stuff man - livin' the dream!

how it suits my mood
navigationlights are better deep down on the boat, if you have them in the masttop it looks more far but your near to a ship
I do have navigation lights on the bow, as well, but the problem with that is the waves are generally higher than the freeboard, so they would be rather ineffective at sea.
@@TheAdventuresofTarka right at sea but l meant at anchor, the lights up on the mast let it look much further away as you are
Tanagra as in "Darmok"?
did u feel safe on such a small boat in the open ocean?
For the most part. I think my biggest fear is losing the rig, and the hull itself is sound, and it's very rare to me in conditions bad enough that I have to start worry about being rolled.
How far are these videos compared to your blog posts? Amazing video as always :)
Pretty far behind at the moment, almost a year, but they're going to catch up rapidly.
What do you do for power? How do you run your laptop etc? Do you have a generator?
When this video was made, I only had the 150W solar panel, but these days, we have 350W of solar with the addition of flexible panels, and I have a 12V charger for my laptop now. Before, I used a 300W inverter to charge my laptop.

I didn't catch the Stargate clip last time I watch this video. You should rename the boat the O'Neal, with two L's.
Indeed!
STARGATE!! you probably also watch bsg dont you? :)
I've binge watched it once, but I'm afraid to do it again ;)
Are they still charging an anchoring fee at Tobago Kays?
They are -- I think it was $10/day.
Nice Sailing video ! Do you soSAILize ? Bet soSAILizers would love your videos :)
Thanks! I don't know about that community, but I'll go check it out :).

Insert Poop Deck Joke.......

Ooops. Decreasing pH I mean. Acidification due to carbonic acid.
