It becomes clear why these Toby Hodges reviews feel so good: the passion for sailing comes through more than anything, his ability and his quest to include us n the experience are the reason why his reviews are special. Thanks for that, Toby
Thanks for this Toby, delightful to see someone who does what he wants and its people like this that are exactly what we need in this world. A pioneer of his own destiny. I pray I am able to have this freedom at the same age.
I think this is Toby’s favourite yacht, certainly tested this year … For the pure enjoyment of sailing, no bells and whistles, everything you need and no wasted energy. Might have added a carbon fibre bucket for WC purposes.
This looks so much like an RC yacht which I find cool. I think because from the drone shots there's nothing on it that looks like a big boat. Most of the details are hidden below deck. And then when Toby explained how the keel attaches, I was like: "That's exactly like on an IOM!" As someone who comes from racing one design classes I always appreciated going to windward and I love how someone (with enough money) actually commisioned this design. I have been away from sailing for a long while but putting money aside for a cruising boat in the future and very high on the list, maybe the highest, is that it needs to be able to sail to windward well. To further that point and at the risk of upsetting a lot of cruisers, I truly believe the essence of being a skilled sailor is to be able to make a boat beat well. I am not saying you have to do it weeks on end, but if you can't do it for a day or three when needed, you're missing out and honestly, then I don't care how many miles you have under your keel. I didn't mean to end on that, so back to just appreciating the purity behind this design:)
I fully respect the owner for his un compromised passion for the thing he loves, sailing. It seems he does not want to show off, but lives his life with what he loves. He does not waste his money but invest it thoughtfully. We all see the opposite all around us. People who spend money they don’t have for show-off cars, wheels etc. No need to judge a guy just because he might have more money.
I never thought I would love a day sailer this much. This is the epitome of the sailing philosophy of Jack, discarding all the redundant parts then condensing all things he wants into this extremely minimilized design. No consideration for accommodation, no decoration at all, just pure fun for getting out on the water.
Electric cars, bikes, boats are far more pure than extracting and burning fossil fuels. Combustion engines are complex, noisy, dirty polluters. I don't find that pure. Electric drives on sailboats are quiet, smooth and an ideal synergy with nature since they can recharge the energy used to motor from a mooring ball or dock or anchorage using wind power through hydrogeneration. I.e. the energy used for motoring comes from the wind simply by sailing and using the motor as a generator. It's far more respectful of nature than burning Diesel. It's also much quieter and smoother.
@LoanwordEggcorn did i say anything of electricity? ...i did say electronics.....that is different.....but talking of electric propulsion...YES...I LOVE BURNING FUEL......!
@@claudiobaer9039 The boat has electronic wind instruments and electric captive winches to control the sails. Maybe it doesn't have a chart plotter? Not really sure what you're referring to otherwise.
The owner is the ultimate sailing lover and has specified the most incredible daysailer ever for that end. I'd manage to add at least a reasonable berth, galley and head. It's a 66 after all. The T shaped cockpit is genious and can be an inspiration for production boats!
It is hard to fathom how uncompromised this beauty is. All those who couldn’t resist leaving a negative comment here could only smile going out alone themselves in those conditions.
Beautiful lines, even though I'm definitely more a traditional wooden ship lover, is a lovely clean deck. Thank you Toby. Would truly love to see more timestamps trimarans in this channel but I get it, they free and far between haha.
I’m going to say that anyone whose first comment is too expensive, too impractical, etc isn’t a sailor. The feel of 60 lwl slicing upwind at 12 kts? That’s why human beings evolved to aspire and dream …more or less
I sail an elderly First 501 built for maximum accommodation and mass produced. I have enjoyed her as have two generations of family but pure sailing joy she is not. If I just wanted to day sail, I would much prefer my first Folkboat or Contessa 26. Slow? Yes, but you were involved with the boat. As is pointed out in the video at 5 knots I was flying. I still remember learning to sail in a Cadet plywood pram dingy. I'm sure that I was doing 20 knots at times! OK, I was 11 years old and prone to exaggerate, but I totally get the idea of this yacht. A very expensive folly? In my book, that is called Sunseeker 😂.
So true - if I would have my own F1 car build just for me tailormade, I could have a F1 car way quicker than the existing F1 cars, because I don't have the restrictions of their rule book - take wider tires, more wing and downforce, engine with more displacement, more ground effect, perhaps slightly longer wheelbase, etc. and all my electronics too.
this is truly a modern day , max performance , gentleman’s daysailer…she must slice those seas like a knife… i envision building a daysailer for myself and think very similarly in concept…tempting to go low draft scow, but sailing to wind is the latinate ticket for day sailing…
Thanks for the presentation! 🤔 My impression of this sailing boat is that it’s not really meant for conspicuous consumption. I’m always thinking how large of a sailing vessel can you solo? 20m? 30?
Impressive 😊 Have a look at the old X-60 perfomance day sailor from 1988 named "Andelsbanken". I have sailed it as helmsman once... it was breaking all records. 😊 it was the same concept but all manual. 60 feet and only 8 tons 😮
That's a series of one then for one location ...that said it looks like it delivers definitely slices through the water clean. A sixtyfoot lotus seven for the water world. I take it shes electric motor design with plug in or regen under sail... Im waiting to hear what gets said.
Yes but - a lot of people with way less money don't do well leading the world today too? (... as a matter of fact they are/do quite miserable?) Another comment could be - 'Agreed, it's Janet Jellen and the US treasury in the first place - they need to stop printing US dollars out of thin air first and then, as a trickle down to their behavior, the world may tend to become a more healthier place again'? If this guy wastes money than that's probably a nothing compared to the amounts wasted every day by the US treasury? (A nothing for shure!?) 'America's latest aircraft carrier class, the Gerald R. Ford, costs $13 billion per unit. And so far, the entire Ford program has cost taxpayers $120 billion.' 120 billion USD - build and use so far, for 'just one'.
With an almost 13' high-aspect keel that would make me nervous. I'd like to see someone experiment with a reduced depth, take that extra keel weight and put it into batteries to power a gryrostabilizer.
It’s basically a massive dinghy. Meanwhile IMOCAs… are oceanic 60ft single-handers, that could probably out-sail this over a realistic course not all-upwind. Just saying.
The foiling ones definitely but the IMOCAS are incredibly complex machines (canting keel, foils,...) that are super uncomfortable to sail and require a crazy amount of energy during manoeuvers. The owner was looking for simplicity and performance.
Hmm No bay of the incapable for this boat, like a windsurfer 😂 only very expensive as comfortable? He can afford it. For the rest of the world? That is not as self-centered as this 75 year old? There are a thousand much cheaper ways to do better travel day. Evidently Psychologically he needs many feet you have a forward edge and a return one😂
Chapeau to the patron. A lot of shipbuilders employed, taxes paid and mouths fed. And a beautiful yacht bespoke to his exacting needs. Exceptional.

Thank you, I really appreciate your words! T
Absolutely …. It’s all about the infectious passion.
A pure boat to enjoy the wind! Cool!
Thanks for this Toby, delightful to see someone who does what he wants and its people like this that are exactly what we need in this world. A pioneer of his own destiny. I pray I am able to have this freedom at the same age.
How awesome is this. Pure sailing. Although, I'd add a simple toilet for guests, and a built in cooler.
this is art, and pure sailing...what a dream if you just want to sail fast
I think this is Toby’s favourite yacht, certainly tested this year … For the pure enjoyment of sailing, no bells and whistles, everything you need and no wasted energy. Might have added a carbon fibre bucket for WC purposes.
A pure sailing boat, built for purpose. Excellent!!

A gorgeous blade through the water. Many great design ideas.
So simple! Well explained. Beautiful journalistic review. As always! Thanks for your efforts and your teams edits and hard work. Enjoyed it.
Thank you very much - and wishing you and all a happy 2025! T

Absolutely
I couldn't agree more and wonder what an "affordable" version of this concept would look like and sail like.
This might be the most beautiful sailboat I’ve ever seen
we need more of this pureness in this electronic world... pure boats, cars bikes etcetc

wicked cool yacht and lovely video. thanks for sharing this!
It was literally a pleasure! T
The fine hull and light helm are attractive. 4:50 Turning the helm a few degrees moved the bow instantly. Very impressive boat.

Clever guy and a great video! Thank you Toby!

It was designed for me. It is how i sail. It is how i would want it. It would be perfect for San Francisco.
Tobes you have done it again mate. Cheers ☮️🤙🌊⛵️🦘🦘🦘
I’m going to say that anyone whose first comment is too expensive, too impractical, etc isn’t a sailor. The feel of 60 lwl slicing upwind at 12 kts? That’s why human beings evolved to aspire and dream …more or less
Love this!
I totally get this philosophy. The industry needs simple safe elegant daysailers with easy rigs. Built for the joy of sailing.
Splendid

I can do it all myself on my laser as well. Yes, so much fun. Hoping to get out next week.

Elegant.
Bellissima ❤
refined simplicity²
Americas cup in singlehanded 60footers anyone? 😅
Hell yeah
Or just crew of two!
this is truly a modern day , max performance , gentleman’s daysailer…she must slice those seas like a knife…

Fantastic
I'm in my mid-seventies, no way could I go all day without a toilet!!!
Impressive 😊 Have a look at the old X-60 perfomance day sailor from 1988 named "Andelsbanken". I have sailed it as helmsman once... it was breaking all records. 😊 it was the same concept but all manual. 60 feet and only 8 tons 😮

Does it even have a head?
Either way, can I get one in Stars and Strips Blue please?
Can I have one of these in a 40 footer format?
I'm sure if you ask designers Judel Vrolijk and builders Multiplast nicely...
It has become quite clear that some people have too much money.
IN that case, this boat should be named Taylor's Swift
A 60’ day sailer? You may be right
Some of this thinking will inspire the design of less engineered and expensive day yachts .
What part of sailing history have you missed that would you suggest that fancy yachts is not a big money game
Yes but - a lot of people with way less money don't do well leading the world today too? (... as a matter of fact they are/do quite miserable?)

Alright Toby, you said it, What is your boat? What are you sailing? =D
Couldn't hear clearly. What's the name of the bimini with the rails?
Love this boat, everyone needs a toilet?
Get rid of the Bimini, and it’s the ideal 60 foot daysailer; if you can afford it.😮
Even for a few of hours of sailing on a Med summer's day, the bimini was very welcome!
A life long sailor lives longer, better and remains more handsome when they take care of their skin. Skin cancer is real.
It’s a 60 foot dingy
60ft day sailer ??
Since it's non planning design, max achievable speed is correlated with the water length, isn't it?
With an almost 13' high-aspect keel that would make me nervous. I'd like to see someone experiment with a reduced depth, take that extra keel weight and put it into batteries to power a gryrostabilizer.
A 60 foot daysailers; get real. An oxymoron. The whole concept sucks.
It’s basically a massive dinghy.

The foiling ones definitely but the IMOCAS are incredibly complex machines (canting keel, foils,...) that are super uncomfortable to sail and require a crazy amount of energy during manoeuvers. The owner was looking for simplicity and performance.
But who can afford a massive boat where you can't even sleep on the damned thing?
1st
Chop, what chop? that is a mill pond... Seriously that one boring boat that only a millionaire would buy and never use....
goes 20kts upwind and 2kts down
Hmm No bay of the incapable for this boat, like a windsurfer 😂 only very expensive as comfortable?
