  • Foliar application for Invasive's. I wanted to share one of the techniques I am using to treat/address invasive species on our properties to improve animal habitat. Foliar application is one method to address smaller invasive species. Herbicide application using the 4 gallon backpack sprayer is extremely useful and enables me to cover a large area quickly treating invasive species. These can include for example: Autumn Olive, Privet, Multiflora Rose, Barberry Bush....). I have been working with the Division of Soil and Water Conservation District in Ohio for guidance/direction on habitat improvements with my initial primary focus being on addressing invasive species.

Hi I'm in Wood County WV and been doing hack and squirt using 2,4 D. It has worked well. I like that 2,4 D biodegrades quickly. I have ordered some Triclopyr from TS to give it a try. It also biodegrades but takes a little longer. From what I have read 2,4 D have a half life of 6 days and Triclopyr takes 30 to 90 days to half life. Thanks for your information.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate your information/tip. Always more than one way to skin a cat and it’s good to know other options.

A couple of safety notes: 1) That mask you are using is doing nothing since it is not a respirator rated for chemicals (I bet that with that mask you can still smell the chemicals right?). 2) PPE for that type of application also recommends using long sleeve shirts. You are getting all the spray directly on your skin. Finally I want to comment that I definitely prefer Basal Bark applications of Triclopyr ester + oil carrier. It is WAY less messy and only target the trees you want to kill and nothing else around.

Thanks for watching, commenting and adding additional ppe guidance and an alternative strategy. I am taking some but not all precautions as you noted. Depends on the level of risk one wants to assume. If I wanted full protection as you mention I would actually be in a full containment/coverage suit perhaps throwaway or washable with hood and a half face or full face cartridge respirator. Each person must assess their level of risk. I agree the basal bark treatment is cleaner and more focused for sure. The areas I am treating are almost 100% choked out by autumn olive so no real undergrowth and I mainly foliar spray on autumn olive below head height and monitor wind direction to minimize personal exposure and overspray on desired species. What is your opinion on the effectiveness between basal bark and foliar application? I haven’t personally used basal bark applications yet.
